Using abundant rainfall gauge measurements and Global Precipitation Mission (GPM) data, spatial patterns of rainfall diurnal cycles and their seasonality over high mountain Asia (HMA) were examined. Spatial distributions of rainfall diurnal cycles over the HMA have a prominent seasonality regulated by circulations at different spatiotemporal scales, within which large regional contrasts are embedded. Rainfall diurnal variability is relatively weak in the premonsoon season, with larger amplitude over the western HMA, the southeastern HMA, as well as southern periphery regions, characterized by a dominant late afternoon to morning rainfall preference. The pattern of rainfall spatial distributions is closely related to the midlatitude westerlies. Both the mean rainfall and amplitudes of diurnal cycles become more pronounced with the advance of monsoon season but weaken during postmonsoon. The widespread late afternoon to night pattern over HMA migrating with seasonal atmospheric circulation is consistent with the lifetime of convective systems, which become active from the afternoon due to radiative heating and decay during the night. Stationary terrain-dependent night-to-morning rainfall patterns are visible in those east–west-orientated valleys over HMA and the Qaidam basin throughout the seasons. This salient geographical dependence is associated with local circulation produced by the strong differential thermal conditions over mountains and valleys, which can lift the warm moist air at the mouth of the valley and trigger nocturnal convection. Significance Statement: The main purpose of this study is to explore how spatial patterns of rainfall diurnal cycles over high mountain Asia vary with the seasons. Our results show that the widespread late afternoon to night rainfall over high mountain Asia migrating with seasonal atmospheric circulation is consistent with the lifetime of convective systems. Stationary terrain-dependent night-to-morning rainfall patterns are visible in those east–west-orientated valleys over high mountain Asia and the Qaidam basin throughout the seasons. These results highlight the importance of large-scale atmospheric circulation and local circulation on precipitation, which is critical for water resources over high mountain Asia. The migratory insect Mythimna separata is a major pest of grain crops in Asia. Unfortunately, the molecular mechanisms that control and regulate reproduction in this species remain unclear. In this study, transcriptome sequencing was utilized to identify genes associated with ovary development and oogenesis. Clean sequences totaling 117.71 Gb were assembled into 178,534 unigenes with a mean length of 647.37 bp and N50 length of 837 bp. Transcriptome analysis showed that 7921 unigenes were significantly expressed in ovaries with 4403 and 3518 unigenes up- and down-regulated, respectively. Enrichment analysis with the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes database suggested that 729 differentially expressed genes were significantly enriched in the top 20 pathways (q-values <0.05). Twenty genes were associated with ovary development and oogenesis and included lipases, Nanos, small heat shock proteins (sHsps) and histones; these were further verified by qRT-PCR and may play essential roles in M. separata reproduction. Collectively, our findings reveal underlying mechanisms of M.separata reproduction and may lead to RNAi-based management strategies targeting reproductive physiology. [Display omitted] • Flavor metabolic profile and sensory attributes of GCP altered with aging time. • Four volatiles were identified as the characteristic aroma compounds of GCP. • Key volatiles affect the perception of GCP aroma with different aging years. • An effective machine learning model was constructed for predicting GCP aging years. Guangchenpi (GCP), which is the peel of Citrus reticulata 'Chachiensis', is widely used as an herbal medicine, tea and food ingredient in southeast Asia. Prolonging its aging process results in a more pleasant flavor and increases its profitability. Through the integration of sensory evaluation with flavoromic analysis approaches, we evaluated the correlation between the flavor attributes and the profiles of the volatiles and flavonoids of GCP with various aging years. Notably, d-limonene, γ -terpinene, dimethyl anthranilate and α -phellandrene were the characteristic aroma compounds of GCP. Besides, α -phellandrene and nonanal were decisive for consumers' perception of GCP aging time due to changes of their odor activity values (OAVs). The flavor attributes of GCP tea liquid enhanced with the extension of aging time, and limonene-1,2-diol was identified as an important flavor enhancer. Combined with machine learning models, key flavor-related metabolites could be developed as efficient biomarkers for aging years to prevent GCP adulteration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Both Clonorchis sinensis and Metorchis orientalis are the fish–borne zoonotic trematodes, and have a wide distribution of southeastern Asia, especially in China. Due to the similar morphology, life cycle, and parasitic positions are difficult to differentiate between both metacercariae. In the present study, the complete rDNA sequences of five C. sinensis and five M. orientalis were obtained and compared for the first time. And the IGS rDNA sequences were tested as a genetic marker. The results showed complete rDNA lengths of C. sinensis were range from 8049 bp to 8391 bp, including 1991 bp, 1116 bp, 3854 bp, and 1088–1430 bp belonging to 18S, ITS, 28S and IGS, respectively. And the complete rDNA lengths of M. orientalis were range from 7881 bp to 9355 bp, including 1991 bp, 1077 bp, 3856 bp, and 957–2431 bp belonging to 18S, ITS, 28S and IGS, respectively. Comparative analyses reveal length difference main in IGS, which has higher intraspecific and interspecific variations than other ribosomal regions. Forty four repeat (forward and inverted) sequences were found in the complete rDNAs of C. sinensis and M. orientalis. The phylogenetic analyses showed that the sequences of ITS1, ITS2, 18S and 28S could be used as different level genetic markers. In IGS phylogenetic tree, Opisthorchiidae, Paramphistomidae, Dicrocoeliidae, and Schistosomatidae formed monophyletic groups, and the same length sequences were clustered together in the same species. These findings of the present study provide the new molecular data for studying the complete rDNA of C. sinensis and M. orientalis , and indicate IGS sequences may used as a novel genetic marker for studying intraspecific variation in trematodes. Background: Double Burden of Malnutrition (DBM)-the coexistence of undernutrition along with overnutrition-is a significant public health issue in the Asia-Pacific region. The scope of the DBM in this region is largely unknown. This review aims to determine the prevalence of under- and overnutrition as major DBM components and to investigate whether there has been a shift from under- to overnutrition in the Asia-Pacific region., Methods: Online databases including PubMed and Web of Science were searched for original studies on DBM prevalence in the Asia-Pacific region; particularly, those published from January 2008 to December 2018 were screened for eligibility. We collected data on indicators of under- and overnutrition on the population level and adapted the ratio of prevalence of overweight/obesity versus prevalence of underweight as the main outcome indicator. Pooled prevalence estimates of DBM and the ratio of overnutrition versus undernutrition were generated using R (3.4.0)., Results: In total, 33 studies were included in this review. Pooled analysis demonstrated that DBM was generally presented among countries/areas in the Asia-Pacific region except in high-income countries (HICs). Overall, the prevalence of undernutrition was 8.8% (95% CI 7.3-10.6%) while overnutrition among the same population reached 23.0% (95% CI 20.3-26.0%). Countries in the Oceania region or HICs reported low level of undernutrition (less than 3%). All subgroup analysis (geolocation, income level, sex, age) reported pooled prevalence of overweight/obesity as more than 18%. Overall, the whole region and all subgroups were more likely to experience a higher prevalence of overnutrition than undernutrition, except that low- and lower-middle-income countries (L-MICs) had similar prevalence for over- and undernutrition., Conclusion: DBM in the Asia-Pacific region is alarmingly high and is titled toward overnutrition.
