The boreal summer western Pacific subtropical high (WPSH) exhibits a remarkable decadal shift in its spatial pattern and periodicity around the late 1990s. In the former period, the WPSH is primarily characterized by a large-scale uniform pattern over Asia and its surrounding area with an oscillating period of ~4–5 yr. However, the WPSH-related atmospheric circulations shift to a dipole structure and oscillate at ~2–3 yr in the recent period. We found that this decadal shift is largely contributed by the ENSO regime change. During the former period, the tropical Pacific was dominated by the conventional eastern Pacific (EP) El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) with an oscillating period of ~4–5 yr. Strong anticyclone anomalies usually are maintained over the western North Pacific (WNP) during the EP El Niño decaying summer, accounting for most of the WPSH temporal and spatial variability. In contrast, the recent period features much more frequent occurrence of central Pacific (CP) El Niño events in the tropical Pacific with a ~2–3-yr oscillating period. A dipole structure in the WNP and Indian Ocean is evident during both developing and decaying summers of CP El Niño, consistent with the WPSH leading mode after the late 1990s. Aim: To evaluate the association between natural resistance‐associated macrophage protein 1 (NRAMP1) polymorphisms and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Method: All related studies were retrieved and screened from PubMed, CNKI and Web of Science. Pooled odds ratios (ORs) and 95% CIs were assessed for the strength of association between NRAMP1 and RA. Publication bias was measured by Begg's funnel plot and Egger's regression test. The robustness of this meta‐analysis was detected by sensitivity analysis. Results: A total of five eligible publications were included in the present meta‐analysis. The polled data showed no association between RA and NRAMP1 D543N and 1729 + 55del4 in the allele model. However, the relationship between RA and NRAMP1 INT4 was statistically significant (OR 1.65, 95% CI 1.14‐2.38). Genotypic analysis demonstrated that there were no associations between RA and NRAMP1 D543N, 1729 + 55del4 and INT4 in homozygous comparison (D543N: OR 0.97, 95% CI 0.15‐6.09; 1729 + 55del4: OR 1.19, 95% CI 0.29‐24.88; INT4: OR 3.18, 95% CI 0.62‐16.26), dominant model (D543N: OR 1.04, 95% CI 0.61‐61.78; 1729 + 55del4: OR 1.41, 95% CI 0.81‐2.47; INT4: OR 1.22, 95% CI 0.72‐2.06) and recessive model (D543N: OR 0.93, 95% CI 0.15‐5.91; 1729 + 55del4: OR 0.99, 95% CI 0.26‐3.86; INT4: OR 2.95, 95% CI 0.61‐14.16). In heterozygous comparison, it no association was shown between RA and NRAMP1 D543N and INT4, excepting NRAMP1 1729 + 55del4 (OR 1.73, 95% CI 1.17‐2.56). Further subgroup analysis indicated that NRAMP1 1729 + 55del4 and INT4 were related to RA in Asia and in the Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium group. There exists no publication bias in this meta‐analysis. Conclusion: This meta‐analysis indicated that NRAMP1 1729 + 55del4 and INT4 confer susceptibility to RA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV) is an emerging tick-borne bunyavirus in Asia that causes severe disease. Despite its clinical importance, treatment options for SFTSV infection remains limited. The SFTSV glycoprotein Gn plays a major role in mediating virus entry into host cells and is therefore a potential antiviral target. In this study, we employed an in silico structure-based strategy to design novel cyclic antiviral peptides that target the SFTSV glycoprotein Gn. Among the cyclic peptides, HKU-P1 potently neutralizes the SFTSV virion. Combinatorial treatment with HKU-P1 and the broad-spectrum viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase inhibitor favipiravir exhibited synergistic antiviral effects in vitro. Background: Understanding the factors influencing cognitive reactivity (CR) may help identify individuals at risk for first episode depression and relapse and facilitate routine access to preventative treatments. However, few studies have examined the relationship between CR and depression in Asian countries. This study was performed to assess the current status of CR among Chinese young adults and explore influencing factors., Methods: A national cross-sectional online study using convenience sampling was conducted among 1597 healthy young adults in China (response rate: 93.94%) with a mean age of 24.34 (SD = 5.76) years., Results: The mean CR score was 51.36 ± 18.97 (range 0-130). Binary logistic regression showed that a low level of CR was associated with the following factors: high self-compassion, high social support, high resilience, high monthly household income, and living in a rural area, with odds ratios (ORs) ranging from 0.14 to 0.70. Young adults in full-time employment, experiencing poor sleep, with high neuroticism, who reported frequent sad mood, and who had a high intensity of negative life events had increased CR to depression, with ORs ranging from 1.18 to 6.66. The prediction probability of these factors was 75.40%. Causal relationships among the influencing factors and CR could not be explored., Conclusions: The self-reported CR levels among Chinese young adults were moderate. Enhancing self-compassion, resilience, and social support for young adults and reducing negative life events, neuroticism, and poor sleep may help decrease CR. These findings may help healthcare providers or researchers determine how to cultivate and improve the CR of young adults by establishing documented policies and/or improving intervention efficacies.

Mean sensitivity (MS) of tree ring is a key index representing the sensitivity of tree rings to climate. Understanding the variation of MS and its influencing factors at a large area is helpful to understand the interaction between tree growth and climate. We used 573 tree-ring width chronologies in Asia from the International Tree Ring Date Bank (ITRDB) to examine the variation of tree-ring sensitivity and potential influencing factors. The results showed that the MS of trees was high in the arid regions and cold regions. Precipitation was more important than temperature in diriving MS. Consistent with the pattern of up-down-up for precipitation, MS showed a down-up-down fluctuation with increasing altitude, indicating that precipitation affected by altitude was a key climate factor for the MS. MS had great difference due to different physiological traits among tree species. Light-adapted species, such as Juniperus przewalskii and Pinus gerardiana, had high MS due to drought tole-rance. Shade-adapted species, such as Picea and Abies, had low MS. Old trees may have high MS.

The Asian summer monsoon affects more than sixty percent of the world's population; understanding its controlling factors is becoming increasingly important due to the expanding human influence on the environment and climate and the need to adapt to global climate change. Various mechanisms have been suggested; however, an overarching paradigm delineating the dominant factors for its generation and strength remains debated. Here we use observation data and numerical experiments to demonstrates that the Asian summer monsoon systems are controlled mainly by thermal forcing whereas large-scale orographically mechanical forcing is not essential: the South Asian monsoon south of 20°N by land-sea thermal contrast, its northern part by the thermal forcing of the Iranian Plateau, and the East Asian monsoon and the eastern part of the South Asian monsoon by the thermal forcing of the Tibetan Plateau.
