Maintaining emotional well-being in late life is crucial for achieving successful and healthy aging. While previous research from Western cultures has documented that emotional well-being improves as individuals get older, previous research provided mixed evidence on the effects of age on well-being in Eastern Asian cultures. However, previous studies in East Asia do not always take into account the effects of cognitive control—an ability which has been considered as a key to enable older adults to regulate their emotions. In the current study, we tested whether cognitive control abilities interact with age in determining individuals' well-being in 59 Japanese females (age range: 26–79; M age = 64.95). Participants' mental health and mental fatigue were tracked for 5 years together with their cognitive control abilities. We found that as individuals became older, they showed improved mental health and decreased mental fatigue. In addition, we found a quadratic effect of age on mental fatigue, which was further qualified by baseline cognitive control abilities. Specifically, in those who had a lower level of cognitive control abilities, mental fatigue declined until the mid-60s, at which point it started increasing (a U-shape effect). In contrast, in those who had a higher level of cognitive control ability, mental fatigue showed a steady decrease with age even after their mid-60s. These results suggest that whether advancing age is associated with positive vs. negative changes in well-being depends on cognitive control abilities, and that preserved cognitive control is a key to maintain well-being in late life. Aim Aging and sarcopenia reduce not only body strength, but also the strength of swallowing muscles. We examined how aging and sarcopenia affect tongue pressure and jaw-opening force. Methods A total of 97 older adults (97 men, mean age 78.5 ± 6.6 years; 100 women, mean age 77.8 ± 6.2 years) were enrolled. Classification of sarcopenia was based on the Criteria of Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia. To investigate which variable between aging and sarcopenia was a significant independent variable on tongue pressure and jaw-opening force, multivariate linear regression analysis was carried out. Results The mean tongue pressure was 26.3 ± 7.8 kPa in men and 24.6 ± 7.2 kPa in women. The mean jaw-opening force was 6.3 ± 1.6 kg in men and 5.2 ± 1.3 kg in women. Tongue pressure in men, aging and sarcopenia were significant independent variables, whereas only sarcopenia was a significant independent variable in women. Jaw-opening force in men and sarcopenia were significant independent variables, whereas neither aging nor sarcopenia were significant independent variables in women. Conclusions We found different characteristics in the effects of aging and sarcopenia based on site and sex. We suggested that aging decreased tongue pressure more than jaw-opening force, and affected men more than women. Sarcopenia affected tongue pressure and jaw-opening force, with the exception of jaw-opening force in women. • More than half of the older patients with stroke have sarcopenia. • The AWGS 2019 recommended CC cut-off values are valid for case-finding of sarcopenia. • Predictive characteristics of sarcopenia were different among men and women. The Asia Working Group for Sarcopenia 2019 (AWGS) recommended using the calf circumference (CC) cut-off values to facilitate the case-finding of sarcopenia. However, the validity of the proposed cut-offs has not been examined in older patients with stroke. This study investigated the validity of the AWGS-recommended CC cut-off values for identifying sarcopenia among older patients with stroke. This cross-sectional study enrolled consecutive patients with stroke, aged 65 years and older, admitted to a convalescent rehabilitation ward. Sarcopenia was diagnosed based on the AWGS 2019 criteria. We drew a receiving operating characteristic curve to assess the ability of CC to predict sarcopenia diagnosis. Subsequently, we estimated the sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, F-value, and Matthews correlation coefficient (MCC) of the considered cut-off values. We enrolled 256 patients (43 % women) (mean age, 76.6 ± 7.5 years). The prevalence of sarcopenia was 63.7 %. Among men who presented with CC < 34 cm (the AWGS-recommended cut-off value), sensitivity and specificity were 85 % and 66 %, respectively. Concurrently, estimates of accuracy, F-value, and MCC were the highest at cut-off value <34 cm. Among women, at <33 cm of the AWGS-recommended cut-off value, the sensitivity and specificity were 91 % and 28 %, respectively. At cut-off value <32 cm, sensitivity was maintained at 80 %, while specificity increased to 56 %; suggesting that this cut-off value might be a useful indicator for the case-finding of sarcopenia. We conducted seroepidemiological studies on antibody prevalence to hepatitis E virus (HEV) in 5,233 sera from 11 countries to ascertain the present state of HEV infection on a global basis. The prevalence of anti-HEV IgG increased with age in these tested countries, but the rate of antibody positivity was over 20% in the 16-30 year-old group in most of the participating countries, except for Japan, the USA, and Spain. Of patients with acute hepatitis of unknown etiology from Nepal, 56% (14/25) were positive for the IgM class of anti-HEV antibody. In addition, HEV RNAs in the serum from 3 Nepali patients who had the IgM antibody were detected by nested PCR and all of the HEV genes isolated belonged to genotype 1. Our results indicate that HEV is spreading worldwide, not only in developing countries, but also in more industrialized countries than previously thought.
