The present issue of the Bulletin comprises articles that review broadly the development of higher education in 10 countries of the Asian region. Though not all countries are covered in the articles, those that are represent developments that have parallels in many other countries of the region. The countries covered by the articles are Afghanistan, Burma, Ceylon, India, Iran, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, the Phillippines, and Thailand. A bibliographical supplement is contained within the text of the document, and a separate supplement presents an annotated list of documents on education in Asia. (HS)

This selective bibliography, compiled and annotated by Asian specialists, is intended for the general reader as a continuation of Asia: A Guide to Basic Books published in 1966. The purpose is to identify 156 books covering extensive subject areas about Asia. The supplement is a geographically arranged into four major sections: General Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and East Asia. Books pertaining to India, China and Japan comprise over one-third of this bibliography supplement and are classified by subjects under the categories: 1) general works; 2) cultural, economic, and political history; 3) religion and philosophy; 4) literature; 5) art; and 6) modern political, social, and economic developments. Alphabetically arranged author and title indices are provided for both the original and the supplement. Special features include additional title bibliographies; a list of recent publishers and their addresses for titles cited in both editions; and a short list of book stores specializing in outstanding sources of Asian studies materials. This bibliography, which contains approximately 500 citations dated between 1952 and 1972, is one of a series on various areas of the world. Countries included in this bibliography on Southeast Asia are: Australia, Burma, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia and Singapore, New Zealand, the Philippines, Thailand, Viet-Nam, Western Samoa and the South West Pacific. This series of bibliographies was prepared for use in training programs. Primary emphasis in the selection of items was given to materials in the library of the Foreign Service Institute. Preference was given to the more recently published materials in order to highlight the most current studies and to ensure a balanced presentation of differing viewpoints on an issue. The document, which contains over 500 citations, most of which are dated between 1952 and 1971, is divided into the following sections: 1) Bibliographies; 2) Physical and Human Geography; 3) General History; 4) India; 5) Pakistan; 6) Afghanistan; 7) Ceylon; 8) Nepal and the Himalayan Area; 9) Regional Security; 10) Art and Literature; and 11) Periodicals. The sections on individual countries include citations on religion, philosophy, ethics, social customs, politics, education, and international relations. The past and the present interweave in contemporary India. To understand India, one must know of the traditional stories. Two short pocket books make them accessible and acceptable to students: 1) The Dance of Shiva and Other Tales from India by Oroon Ghosh, published by the New American Library in New York; and, 2) Gods, Demons, and Others by R. K. Narayan, published by the Viking Press in New York. In the first book, the stories are compiled in short, summary fashion. The second book is for secondary school students, and introduces them to the two great Hindu epic poems, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. It is suggested that these epics be studied with special attention to the Bhagavad Gita, a book in the Mahabharata. Both poems provide the subject matter for understanding the culture, basic values, and attitudes of Hinduism; the Mahabharata is the repository of India's national tradition, a great encyclopedia of ethics and religion, and or political and moral duties. Students should also learn the story of Krishna and his early life with the Gopis. If possible, they should also dip into the Panchatantra: five books written for the instruction of three princes in niti, the right conduct of life, using animal stories as the vehicle. The primary objective of the guide or introduction is to present approaches to providing a well balanced course or unit on China, India, and Japan. In the study of Asian cultures it is necessary to stress historic facts and the richness of the culture; an exclusive attention to economic growth, modernization, and the social and political problems is not appropriate. The most effective way to achieve balance is to use the comparative approach integrating both the humanities and the social sciences. How a teacher organizes his course and what method he chooses depends on his philosophy: 1) whether he postulates a linear or cyclical view of history; and, 2) how he stands on the uniqueist versus the universalist view of culture. It would be of great value if Western civilization could be studied first to facilitate comparison between institutional structures, values systems, and history. The basic methodology should start from the frame of reference of the student; the teaching of concepts, and the utilization of induction and deduction are all valid here. Study can be synthesized by selecting material from the native literature, art, music, and philosophy. Films may serve as a final summation or equally well as an introduction. The author outlines an introductory undergraduate course in Indian Studies constructed on the configuration of a social science cluster built around a central disciplinary core of political science. The objective of the course is to build an understanding of contemporary India. As a matter of convenience and organization the course is divided into four historical periods: Ancient India, Muslim India, British India, and Independent India; this provides the opportunity to introduce historical background material systematically, and starting points to introduce certain present day institutions and processes with roots in another era. Family, caste, village, and linguistic area are described, conceptualized, and discussed; reading selections are included. Suggested media techniques include: showings of slides; photographs of people at work; exhibitions of artifacts, art, and handicrafts; educational and commercial films; and an annual recorded concert of Indian music. The newsletter of this national organization presents commentary on the foreign policy relationship between the United States and China and cites relevant current information. In the summer, 1971 issue introductory comments on the Taiwan policy dilemma appear, as well as announcements of study programs, conferences or symposia, and field staff activities. A main section, China in the News, summarizes current news items based largely on New York Times, Washington Post, and Far Eastern Economic Review Sources. Proposals of Senators and private organizations for alternatives and change in United States policy toward China are outlined in the article "China Policy--Which Direction?". Topics covered in the various proposals include United Nations membership, the Taiwan question, as well as travel and trade policies. In addition, specific texts of U.N. Draft Resolutions are given. The newsletter provides an annotated bibliography on China Resources, citing book and magazine materials, forthcoming television programs, and interview tapes available from the Committee. The purpose of this quarterly publication from the Asian Studies Project is to promote increased attention to Asian Studies in elementary and secondary education. This issue of the newsletter contains introductory comment on current affairs as well as two main articles: "On the Study of World Cultures" by Dr. Kishorkant Yajnik of India and "Redefining China for the High School and College Curriculum" by Ronald Suleski. Announcements of conferences, a Resource File (available study aids, curriculum guides, and free materials), a Multi-Media Materials section, and book reviews are also included. A separate section, Asia in the Elementary School, gives curriculum news for this age level and features, in the Booknook by Sara Little, an annotated bibliography of childrens books on Asian topics. This winter issue annually announces summer study opportunities in the United States and in Asia. FOCUS is offered free of charge as a service to the educational community, however, voluntary contributions are solicited to help defray expenses. The bibliography project aimed at providing undergraduate libraries with additonal and more recent resources by listing in separate bibliographies of 750 entries on Southeast Asia and 1200 entries on the Middle East and North Africa, each arranged by country and subject with an author index. The two computerized bibliographies, Southeast Asia: A Bibliography for Undergraduate Libraries and Middle East and North Africa: A Bibliography for Undergraduate Libraries, designed to serve as book selection tools for librarians, were graded and edited while in a pre-bibliography state by scholars and librarians who evaluated books for their degree of importance to undergraduate libraries: books that should be included in all undergraduate libraries, those that a library should have if the college offers a course in either of these areas, and books that a library would need to support undergraduate area studies. The graded draft was then produced and circulated to a panel of college librarians and other consultants for revision. This is a new approach consisting of the following features: information on the availability of each title; computer production; grading as to significance; and keying to critical reviews. The purpose of this syllabus is to help government personnel assigned to South Asia, or to positions dealing with South Asian affairs, to acquire a basic knowledge of the area and some understanding of the motivational dynamics of the people. It is not intended to serve as an operational briefing nor to take its place. The goal is the facilitation of operations, which gives it a slightly different focus from strictly academic study programs, where the ends of pure scholarship and research are primarily served. It deals with the historical roots of problems, issues and attitudes, but with a view of their relevance to current processes and events. Each section of the syllabus is divided into three parts. The first, an introduction, is intended only to serve as a framework for the readings, and to point up a few of the highlights of the subject treated. This is followed by a set of questions to directively stimulate reading and analysis, and to facilitate self-evaluation of progress. The third part is an annotated reading list. The leading entries have been selected from the current literature for their relative brevity as well as for their quality in covering the themes and questions advanced in the text. With this design, the syllabus is intended for use both by beginning area students and those with prior experience. It can be used for tutorials or self-instruction. The resource guide provides information on sources of exhibitions and materials for display which depict the peoples and culture of Asia. The major portion of the booklet represents one of the original Asia Society's exhibitions. The first section suggests several organizations which offer traveling exhibitions. Under each organization the kinds of displays available are listed. Brief descriptions include the title, number of works, weight and rental fee of exhibitions. The second section enumerates sources of publications from which dramatic displays can be prepared. Complete bibliographic citations contain descriptive annotations and prices. The last section includes twenty-three prints in reduced size entitled "Masterpieces of Asian Art" -- one of the original Asia Society's exhibitions. The prints are examples of well-known categories of Asian art. Although the collection is no longer available as a traveling exhibition, enlarged prints are available. (SJM)

Three hundred and sixteen books dating from 1915 to 1966 with the majority published in the 1950s and 1960s are listed in this annotated bibliography. The purpose of the guide is to identify basic books on Asia which are especially useful for teachers, mature students, and adults who want to increase their knowledge and understanding of Asian peoples and cultures. The overall organization of the bibliography is by four geographical sections: Asia -- General, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and East Asia. More coverage is given to the countries of India, China and Japan. Each of the sections (except for Southeast Asia) begins with a short bibliographic essay indicating books of special importance, and is then classified by subject: general works, cultural, political, and economic history, religion and philosophy, literature, arts, social structure and modern developments. Author entries contain complete bibliographic information and indicate when a book is available in paperback. Descriptive annotations define the scope of the work. Special features include sections on bibliography of bibliographies; publisher's list, and an author index. A supplement to this original publication is described in ED 059 132. (SJM)

This list of over 300 fiction and non-fiction books on Asian countries is designed as a tool for teachers who desire to select works which will foster in children an interest in Asian nations and a knowledge of customs, daily life and culture of the people. All facets of each country are considered -- the land, people, history, customs, government, religion, education, festivals and holidays, art, and music. More coverage is given to China, India, and Japan because many books on these three countries have been published for children. The majority of the books listed were published in the 1960's. Selective criteria for the books focused on including readable, informative books with acceptable literary quality, authentic content, and quality illustrations and format; availability of books in the United States; books for use in kindergarten through junior high school; and consideration of the reading level ability of children. To help those teachers who wish to expand their own knowledge of a country, a number of books including some of a textbook nature are included. The overall arrangement of the guide is by country. This annotated bibliography on Asia, Africa, and Latin America contains sources primarily for elementary and secondary school students; also included are books for libraries and teachers. The bibliography on Asia is divided into curriculum materials and information books. Some of the countries covered are: Burma; Cambodia; China; India; Japan; Korea; and Vietnam. The section on Black Africa includes a social studies curriculum for secondary students. The books on Latin America cover Mexico as well. Intended to improve instruction in Asian studies in grades 1-12, this report of a project (University of California, Berkeley) contains extensive lists of general guidelines for incorporating Asian studies into the social studies curriculum; guidelines for preparing units of instruction on Asian topics; example units for elementary and high school; assessments of units prepared for the project, based on teacher evaluations, student reactions, and test data; and an outline and illustrative lessons plans for a thematic approach to an elective high school course on Asian cultures. A summary of project activities and recommendations for improving curriculum development projects in the social studies are also included. Appendixes present a list of sources of information on Asian studies and Asian countries, a list of project personnel, a list of materials disseminated by the project, and instruments used to evaluate units of instruction.
