Over the past 50 years, fossil fuel consumption has increased dramatically, rising approximately eight-fold since 1950 and doubling since 1980. This surge has led to increased emissions of brown carbon (BrC) into the atmosphere, which are subsequently deposited onto oceans and land through dry or wet deposition processes. However, the source-specific fluxes of atmospheric organic carbon (OC) and BrC into the ocean are not adequately represented in the global carbon cycle. For the first time, we calculated BrC concentration using the optical intensity of organic matter and determined the global wet depositional flux of fossil fuel-derived BrC. Using the ratio of humic-like substances to OC fluxes, we estimated the global wet deposition of fossil fuel-derived BrC to be 2.0 ± 0.6 Tg C yr -1 . Of this amount, the flux into oceans (0.7 ± 0.2 Tg C yr -1 ) represents 1.6% of the production rate of refractory dissolved organic carbon (RDOC) in the ocean (43 Tg yr -1 ). Notably, an increase in the proportion of fossil fuel-derived BrC in atmospheric OC may change the composition of OC in precipitation, resulting in a more refractory composition, which deviates from previously established paradigms. Our findings indicate that the flux of fossil fuel-derived RDOC from the atmosphere into the ocean, which is inadequately represented in current global DOC cycling models, may play a significant role in oceanic carbon cycles. The relationship between initial Homo sapiens dispersal from Africa to East Asia and the orbitally paced evolution of the Asian summer monsoon (ASM)-currently the largest monsoon system-remains underexplored due to lack of coordinated synthesis of both Asian paleoanthropological and paleoclimatic data. Here, we investigate orbital-scale ASM dynamics during the last 280 thousand years (kyr) and their likely influences on early H. sapiens dispersal to East Asia, through a unique integration of i) new centennial-resolution ASM records from the Chinese Loess Plateau, ii) model-based East Asian hydroclimatic reconstructions, iii) paleoanthropological data compilations, and iv) global H. sapiens habitat suitability simulations. Our combined proxy- and model-based reconstructions suggest that ASM precipitation responded to a combination of Northern Hemisphere ice volume, greenhouse gas, and regional summer insolation forcing, with cooccurring primary orbital cycles of ~100-kyr, 41-kyr, and ~20-kyr. Between ~125 and 70 kyr ago, summer monsoon rains and temperatures increased in vast areas across Asia. This episode coincides with the earliest H. sapiens fossil occurrence at multiple localities in East Asia. Following the transcontinental increase in simulated habitat suitability, we suggest that ASM strengthening together with Southeast African climate deterioration may have promoted the initial H. sapiens dispersal from their African homeland to remote East Asia during the last interglacial., Competing Interests: Competing interests statement:The authors declare no competing interest.

The COVID-19 pandemic caused disruptions of public life and imposed lockdown measures in 2020 resulted in considerable reductions of anthropogenic aerosol emissions. It still remains unclear how the associated short-term changes in atmospheric chemistry influenced weather and climate on regional scales. To understand the underlying physical mechanisms, we conduct ensemble aerosol perturbation experiments with the Community Earth System Model, version 2. In the simulations reduced anthropogenic aerosol emissions in February generate anomalous surface warming and warm-moist air advection which promotes low-level cloud formation over China. Although the simulated response is weak, it is detectable in some areas, in qualitative agreement with the observations. The negative dynamical cloud feedback offsets the effect from reduced cloud condensation nuclei. Additional perturbation experiments with strongly amplified air pollution over China reveal a nonlinear sensitivity of regional atmospheric conditions to chemical/radiative perturbations.
