When do the first representations of newspaper reading women in the 19th Century Argentina begin to appear? What is the relevance of their profile in the politicalcultural debates of the revolutionary era? What do women read in the press, and how do they answer to the call of writers designing educational policies and reading programs for them? This article aims to answer these questions by means of a select corpus of newspapers from the beginning of the century (El Telégrafo Mercantil, El Semanario de Agricultura y Comercio, El Correo del Comercio, El Observador Americano, La Gazeta de Buenos Aires). Likewise, the article delves into literary and artistic representations to figure out the imaginaries and practices of reading women at the origins of the formation of the nation. This article shows how, given their late incorporation into the domain of Argentina as a state, the National Territories had a different legal status from that of the provinces since they did not have political autonomy as administrative divisions. The settlers of the territories could not participate in national elections, nor could they elect their own governors, nor send a representative to the National Congress. It thus proposes an analysis of the institutional order designed for the territories in order to determine whether it is valid to interpret the situation of the settlers of these spaces as an expression of restricted political citizenship. In many Malvinas' War tales, monster apparitions like inhuman beasts, ghosts, zombies, exhausted bodies, etc, are frequent. Commonly they are told in a grotesque way, it means in a mix of comic and tragic but mainly tragic way. So the grotesque becomes in sinister. Even though in a former sight the monsters are characterized by their difference, according to the Freudian conception the sinister is produced because of the coming back of something familiar that became strange in the repression process. Into this frame, in this paper we intend to analize some Malvinas' War tales in order to understand what becomes familiar --and then terrifying-- their monsters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

During the 19th century the formation of a social basis necessary to strengthen the republican nation constituted a process that had followed a top-down approach promoted by the literate elites who found in real people an obstacle for their own convictions; the "other" that is not accepted or is kept at the margin of modernizing political ideas. These elites will understand the situation in terms of binary oppositions such as "barbarism - civilization", "possible republic - true republic," and would enforce the necessary means to overcome them. It was time to found the nation and the elements associated with race, traditions, language and religion were not the proper scaffolding for that foundation. Maybe those are the reasons why the picture of the desert to be populated becomes a metaphor and an explanation for all the evils that prevent the achievement of the desired order. Although the country was characterized by the presence of large extensions of land, those were not desert areas, as they had already been populated, and that native population and their colonial habits blended and became part of that landscape. Consequently, the citizen, according to the former traditions, had to be constructed from scratch. This essay aims at analyzing the image of the desert as a political conception and the invisibilization of the native "other" in the process of building the national state. In 1948, the Argentine philosopher Carlos Astrada interpreted in his work The Gaucho Myth, reprinted in 1964, the poem "Martín Fierro" as an expression of "the myth of the nation." This article demonstrates that Astrada pegged his analysis to changes in political conjuncture associating those who assumed power to the imaginary figure of the "national hero". This article discusses the concept of time in History (the discipline) as a political notion. Starting with and analysis of the connivences between history, nation and temporality, the author tries to unravel why it operates a hierarchical distribution of "subjects of history" and "subjects of culture". Dealing with specific cases of South Africa and Argentina, he tries to see how this distribution (even resignified in the "multicultural nation") prevents to realize certain continuities in the reproduction of asymmetries.
