The first nutritional profiling of all Trichocereus species of columnar cacti from northern Argentina is reported. Commonly called 'cardones' by locals, they are iconic elements of the flora and cultural heritage in the region. A general chemical characterization of the four species (T. atacamensis, T. terschekii, T. tarijensis and T.schikendatzii) was performed. Stem tissues for each species in terms of humidity, ash, protein content, carbohydrates, and reducing sugars, as well as phenols and anti-radical activity were profiled. The results constitute an advance in terms of general knowledge of these vulnerable and exploited Andean cacti and will contribute to ponder the most appropriate method of conservation and the possibility of bioprospecting and regulating its sustainable use. The mid-latitude coastal area at the western South-Atlantic out of the tropics is under the combined effect of different atmospheric circulation patterns at different temporal scales, which can be shown by the isotope composition of precipitation. This pattern effect is more changing and complex than that for the well-studied tropical areas, the isotope studies being an interesting proxy for identifying major processes. This study is focused on the isotope composition of precipitation at a mid-latitude zone, in the western South-Atlantic coastal area of Argentina. δ18O and d-excess were analysed in a data series of 14 years, obtained from the integration of three neighbouring rain collectors at 38°S. A seasonality is observed in both parameters, but with some differences in the extreme months. δ18O showed a seasonality according to the temperature effect, but with a displacement of high values to spring months. Significant linear links between δ18O and Southern Annular Mode (SAM) index and Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) were recognised for the summer and spring seasons, respectively. Fluxes between fractured-karstified and detritic aquifers are commonly poorly understood in many environments. These two types of aquifers are in contact in the southeastern Pampean region in the Argentine Buenos Aires province, and the aim of this work is to analyze their relationship contributing to improve the hydrological model. A joint application of hydrochemical and multi-isotope (δ2H, δ18O, δ13C-TDIC, δ18O-TDIC, 87Sr/86Sr) tools was used. TDIC, δ2H, δ18O and δ13C-TDIC allowed differentiating two main end members. Water in the Pampeano aquifer (PA) which is transferred from the fractured-karstic aquifer (F-KA) is characterised by high TDIC around 500–700 mg/L, isotopically depleted in 18O (about −5.5 ‰) and high δ13C-TDIC (around −10.0 ‰). The other end member is direct recharge water infiltrated into the PA with TDIC ranging from 400 to 500 mg/L, slightly enriched in 18O (δ18O = −4.8 ‰), and δ13C-TDIC in the range of soil CO2 as a result of reactions with calcrete concretions (from −20.0 to −9.0 ‰). Dolomite dissolution is the main process controlling the chemistry of the low-mineralized (Mg–Ca-HCO3) waters, whereas high-mineralized (Na-HCO3) waters are strongly influenced by ion-exchange reactions with adsorbed Ca2+ and Mg2+ and by evaporation. Two ecosystems, forest of yatay (Butia yatay) and riparian forest, in El Palmar National Park, Entre Ríos province, Argentina, were sampled for soil oribatid mites. Thirty six species were found; eleven of them are recorded from Argentina for the first time and thirty three for Entre Ríos province. Mar Chiquita is a coastal lagoon located in the Argentine Buenos Aires province in South America. The aim of this study is to estimate the annual contribution of inland waters to the carbon cycle in this lagoon's catchment by estimating the corresponding local carbon budget. Fifteen pairs of water samples were chosen to carry out hydrogeochemical modeling using PHREEQC software. Groundwater samples were considered as recharge water (initial solutions), while streamwater samples were taken as groundwater discharge (final solutions for inverse modeling/reference solutions for direct modeling). Fifteen direct models were performed, where each groundwater sample was constrained to calcite equilibrium under two different carbon dioxide partial pressure (PCO2) conditions: atmospheric conditions (log PCO2 (atm) = -3.5) and a PCO2 value of log PCO2 (atm) = -3. Groundwater samples are close to calcite equilibrium conditions. The calcite precipitation process is kinetically slower than gas diffusion, causing oversaturation of this reactant phase in streamwater samples. This was accompanied by a pH increase of approximately two units due to a PCO2 decrease. From the fifteen inverse models it was estimated that, of the total carbon that enters per year in the hydrological cycle of the study area, about 11.9% is delivered to the atmosphere as CO2 and around 6.7% is buried in sediments. This would indicate that 81.4% of the remaining carbon is retained in equilibrium within the system or discharged into the Mar Chiquita lagoon and/or directly to the ocean through regional flows. A new species of Tullbergia from Argentina is described and illustrated; it is differentiated from Tullbergia paranensis by the number of vesicles of postantennal organ, pseudocelli shape and its formulae and the number of dorsal sensilla on Ant. The Quequén Grande river basin is representative of the farming systems from the Pampas region. The aquifer is the main source of water supply for all uses, which highlights the importance to study the mobility of contaminants through the soil to the saturated zone. The aim of this study was to obtain hydraulic parameters of different soil types in the region according to land use (agricultural and natural) under saturated conditions. Two study areas were selected close to the cities La Dulce (Azul Series Soil) and Lobería (Semillero Buck Series Soil), as representatives of the dominant soil types in this area. The columns were eluted with an aqueous solution containing chloride ions and the progressive increase was measured at the end of the column. From the experimental data the breakthrough curve was adjusted using MATLAB software while dispersivity and porosity values were determined from modeled data. These parameters did not differ significantly in Lobería, so it is assumed that tillage does not produce significant changes in the soil profile. Conversely, in La Dulce land use affects the hydraulic properties of the soil leading to lower porosity and higher dispersivity values in soils under tillage use. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Several biotopes in the riparian forest of Punta Lara, Buenos Aires province, Argentina, were sampled for oribatid mites. Twenty eight species were found, of which seven are recorded for Argentina for the first time: Epilohmannia sculpturata Balogh & Mahunka, Nothrus willmanni Mahunka, Xenillus(Xenillus) fecundus P. Balogh, Xenillus(Xenillus)superbus (Perez-íñigo & Baggio), Zetomimus (Protozetomimus) polpaicoensis (Hammer), Pseudotocepheus (Pseudotocepheus) pauliensis Pérez-íñigo & Baggio and Lohmannia (Lohmannia) juliae Mahunka. Loess like sediments cover an area of about 1.800.000 km2 in the Pampa plain of Argentina, forming an aquifer system which is used for water supply for most of the cities an rural population in the region. This aquifer supplies water to agricultural productive activities that contribute to about a 60% of the national gross produce of the country. In this paper, detailed studies in a local sector of the aquifer near to Mar del Plata, in the landfilling area of the city, are performed. The main goal is to characterise the hydrogeochemical processes giving the chemical groundwater composition, and to analyze the impact of the infiltration of the leachate from a neighbouring landfill on some samples. Five wells were drilled to take sediments and water samples. The textural and mineralogical composition of the aquifer sediments was analysed and the chemical composition of groundwater was determined. The equilibrium relationship between the solid phase and groundwater was considered using specific computer codes. The achieved conclusions were that the chemical composition of groundwater is mainly due to calcite equilibrium and cationic exchange with calcium uptake and sodium release. The dissolution of amorphous silica minerals, and subordinate silicate hydrolysis, are responsible of the characteristic high dissolved silica concentrations. Type specimens of Protura (Hexapoda) housed at the Museo de La Plata (División Entomología) were examined and listed. For each taxon the updated information and collection data are given. The material includes six species described by the specialists Julia Vidal Sarmiento and Judith Najtbetween 1970 and 1972. • U-bearing minerals zircon and monazite were identified in the loess samples. • The activity of 222Rn measured in the studied area ranges from 3.1 to 14.9 Bq/L. • The variability of 222Rn activity is related to the type of the basement rock. • Wells located over the Precambrian granitic basement have higher 222Rn activities. • 222Rn activity increases with the depth of the wells and the residence time. The activity of 222Rn of the groundwater was measured in different wells in the Pampeano aquifer in southeastern Buenos Aires to assess how the hydrogeological characteristics of the study area, which involves type and depth of the bedrock, aquifer mineralogy and residence time along flowpaths, influences on 222Rn contents. Water samples, as well as sediment samples, were collected in multilevel piezometers in different sites of the Buenos Aires province for the determination of stable isotopes, 222Rn concentrations and mineralogical analyses. The identification of uranium-bearing minerals in the loess sediments of the Pampeano aquifer was carried out with a scanning electron microscope allowing identifying zircon and monazite. The 222Rn was determined with a RAD7 detector, showing a range of activities from 3.1 to 14.9 Bq/L. The results showed a relation between the 222Rn activity, the depth of the wells, and the proximity of the Precambrian basement. The activity of 222Rn increases linearly with increasing depth at a rate of 0.09 Bq·L−1·m−1. However, at the same depth the concentration of 222Rn in wells near the Precambrian basement showed to be three times higher than the concentrations in the wells that have a Paleozoic bedrock, clearly showing that the proximity of granitoids rocks results in higher concentrations of radon. 'Pedro Giménez' is a white criolla variety cropped in Argentina, mainly in Mendoza and San Juan, being the most planted white variety destined for wine making in the country. Its origin remains unknown, as well as its relationship with Spanish variety 'Pedro Ximénez', mostly grown in Jerez, Spain. Previous works have probed that most of Criollas varieties existing in America at the moment, are the offspring of 'Muscat of Alexandria' x 'Criolla Chica'. The aim of the present work was to compare 'Pedro Giménez' with the Spanish variety 'Pedro Ximénez', and to establish its degree of relatedness to 'Muscat of Alexandria' and 'Criolla Chica'. Therefore we used a set of 18 nuclear SSR loci and 3 chloroplast SSR loci. 'Pedro Giménez' shared only 38% of the alleles under analysis with 'Pedro Ximénez', indicating that they are indeed two different varieties. In all 18 polymorphic nuclear SSR loci 'Pedro Giménez' shared 50% of its alleles with 'Muscat of Alexandria', while the other 50% of the alleles present in 'Pedro Giménez' were also present in 'Criolla Chica'. This data, along with those from the chloroplast SSR analysis, strongly suggest that 'Pedro Giménez' is the progeny of 'Muscat of Alexandria' x 'Criolla Chica', being the latest one the most likely female progenitor. • The main clinical signs and hematological findings are not pathognomonic of EIA, and therefore serology is required for its diagnosis. • Limitation of the Coggins test is the long turnaround time for the diagnostic results (48–72 hours). • FPA is a rapid and simple diagnostic technique of high sensitivity and specificity. • For its practical simplicity, its speed, and its objectivity in results interpretation, FPA is proposed as an excellent EIA diagnostic test. Equine Infectious Anemia is a transmissible viral disease present worldwide, caused by an RNA virus. Viral transmission is mainly mechanical through blood or its products most frequently by blood-sucking arthropods and iatrogenesis as well. OIE recommends Coggins Test as the diagnostic method of choice. Some ELISA tests detect antibodies earlier than the Coggins test, but may produce false-positive results. Currently, new techniques for EIA diagnosis are being developed, such as fluorescence polarization assay which is a simple method for measuring antigen-antibody interaction. The aim of this study was to assess cELISA and Fluorescence Polarization Assay performance for the serological diagnosis of EIA by comparing their results with those of the Coggins test. Tests were performed on 91 workhorses from an endemic zone in the northeast region of Argentina. From the total samples analyzed, 42 tested negative and 49 tested positive in the Coggins test. Same results were obtained using FPA. Using the cELISA, 41 negative results and 50 positive results were obtained. The Receiver Operating Characteristic analysis showed that FPA performance was excellent. Therefore FPA is proposed as an outstanding EIA diagnostic test to be validated in the near future by its simplicity, speed, and objective interpretation of results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
