This paper analyses the narratives on social cohesion that crystallized during the first decade of the twentieth century in Argentina. It specifically focuses on the systematic promotion of a patriotic education at schools, an experiment which implied disagreements and even clashes amongst the different views and ways of conceiving social and cultural action. The most outstanding aspect of the process was that despite the differences, almost all the participants considered a priority to reach a new solidarity pact that would help to redefine the existing social links. This article discusses the social conditions in the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina, from 1850 to 1910, with a particular focus on public health and hygiene. The author comments on the concepts of social mobility, eclecticism, and social networks during this time period, which are referred to as the social question. He also considers the specific relationship between public health, hygiene, sanitation, and urban society in Buenos Aires. The social transformations in the city over the period studied is also explored.
