Both the identity and prevalence of parasitoid dipterans associated with bumble bees (Bombus spp.) in southern South America are little known. Between 2009 and 2017, a total of 2978 bumble bees were individually collected in 63 localities from 11 provinces of the country. After dissections, the presence of parasitoids was observed in the native bumble bees Bombus pauloensis, B. bellicosus, B. opifex, and B. brasiliensis, plus in the exotic invasive species B. terrestris. A combination of both morphological and molecular analysis based on the COI gene allowed the isolation of two species of Physocephala (Conopidae) and one of Helicobia (Sarcophagidae), expanding their host range and geographic distribution. Orchid bees (Hymenoptera: Apidae) are exclusively Neotropical insects that occur naturally from Mexico to Argentina. Eufriesea species are the least studied among the five genera because they are often univoltine and active for a few months. Eufriesea brasilianorum is seldom collected and is one of the least-known species. We analyzed the data for this rare and threatened species using Maxent and an ensemble of models to determine distribution hypotheses for E. brasilianorum in Brazil. A small area of high suitability was found in eastern Brazil, including Atlantic Forest remnants. More studies must be developed to validate our predictions for E. brasilianorum. Future validation of the predictions obtained for E. brasilianorum will allow further discussion to list E. brasilianorum as a threatened species in the most recent National Action Plan for Conservation of Pollinator Insects Threatened by Extinction. Mesocheira bicolor (Fabricius) is a cleptoparasite bee, widely distributed in the New World from Mexico to northern Argentina. In Argentina, this species is only documented from Formosa. In this contribution, we report new records of males and females reared from trap nests obtained from different studies about nesting biology of solitary bees in pre-existing cavities in several Argentinian provinces. Also, we studied material from Argentinean research collections, and we searched for occurrence data in the Global Biodiversity Information Facility. Adults of M. bicolor were reared from nests of Centris (Hemisiella) tarsata and C. (Hemisiella) nigriventris Burmeister. Here, we reported eight new provincial records that widely increase the geographical distribution of this species in Argentina, expanding its austral-most distribution record by more than 1,000 km. Background and aims: To detect floral interactions between species of family Amaryllidaceae and bees (Hymenoptera: Apoidea: Anthophila), the presence of pollen from wild and cultivated Amaryllidaceae in the nests of wild non-Apis bees collected in three Argentine eco-regions (Pampa, Pampa-Espinal and Chaco) was investigated. M&M: A total of 500 microscopic slides of pollen and honey from 369 nests of 25 bee species were analyzed. The identification was made by comparing the pollen from nests with the reference pollen obtained from the flowers collected in the studied areas. The flower phenology of the wild species and floral visitation with catching of bee individuals were also recorded. Results: A total of six pollen types belonging to Amaryllidaceae were identified in the pollen diet of only five of the 25 bee species analyzed. Among wild Amaryllidaceae, two different flowering patterns were observed: 1) in the wet periods of winter-spring and/or summer-autumn, and 2) very synchronous and ephemeral, triggered by the rains in summer-autumn. Conclusions: The five bee species presenting Amaryllidaceae pollen in their nests and most bees collected on flowers were polylectic (generalized pollen usage) from Apidae and Halictidae families. More research is needed to deeply study the floral associations between bees and Amaryllidaceae in Argentina, and it is expected that there will be a higher number of bee species with pollen specialization (oligolecty) towards particular clades of this lineage of monocots. A new species of Plebeia Schwarz (Hymenoptera: Apidae) from Argentina is described and illustrated. Plebeia mansita Alvarez & Rasmussen sp. nov. occurs in the extreme northwest of the country and is restricted to the biogeographic province of the Yungas, where it is found at altitudes above 1,000 m. Nectariferous and polliniferous resources are key to the survival of social bees, so identifying the origin sources allows the implementation of management actions aimed at a greater supply of nutrients for the colonies. Besides, defining the floral origin of honeys contributes to their characterization and commercialization. The objective of our work was to identify the plants that provide nectar to the bees Apis mellifera and Tetragonisca fiebrigi in northern Misiones, through palynological analysis of honey samples collected between 2006 and 2008. Both bees showed a polylectic foraging habit. Richness of pollen types per sample ranged between 10 and 34 (mean = 20.5 ± 7.7) for A. mellifera, and between 13 and 43 (mean = 24.8 ± 7.1) for T. fiebrigi. The 15 most abundant pollen types in the honeys of A. mellifera were, in decreasing order of importance, Euphorbiaceae, Euterpe edulis, Holocalyx balansae, Calyptranthes concinna-type, Actinostemon, Salix, Ruprechtia laxiflora, Myrcianthes pungens-type, Thinouia mucronata, Allophylus edulis, Ilex, Syagrus romanzoffiana, Gouania latifolia-type, Parapiptadenia rigida, and Baccharis-type, whereas in the honeys of T. fiebrigi the most important pollen types included S. romanzoffiana, Schinus weinmannifolius-type, Baccharis-type, H. balansae, E. edulis, Rhamnaceae, Citrus, Leonurus japonicus, G. latifolia-type, A. edulis, Gomphrena perennis-type, Pouteria gardneriana, P. rigida, Zanthoxylum, and Actinostemon. Pollination of passion fruit and other crops by species of carpenter bees of the genus Xylocopa Latreille significantly increases both the quality and the quantity of fruits. To enhance pollination services, bee nests are either introduced into the crop area or females are encouraged to nest using trap nests. Thus, knowledge of trap‐nest preference, brood development and nest parasitism is essential for effective and sustainable nest management practices. Xylocopa (Neoxylocopa) augusti Lepeletier is a promising pollinator in some areas of Argentina because of its high abundance, ability to buzz‐pollinate and easy acceptance of trap nests. However, limited information is available on the biology of this pollinator. Herein, we provide detailed information on its nesting cycle, brood development and parasitism from trap nests at an urban area in Buenos Aires province, Argentina. Our study indicates that X. augusti is a solitary and likely univoltine species that shares some nesting and developmental features with other species in the subgenus Neoxylocopa, which might facilitate the adoption of existing management techniques developed for other species and regions. Understanding how bees use resources at a landscape scale is essential for developing meaningful management plans that sustain populations and the pollination services they provide. Bumblebees are important pollinators for many wild and cultivated plants, and have experienced steep population declines worldwide. Bee foraging behavior can be influenced by resource availability and bees' lifecycle stage. To better understand these relationships, we studied the habitat selection of Bombus pauloensis by tracking 17 queen bumblebees with radio telemetry in blueberry fields in Entre Ríos province, Argentina. To evaluate land use and floral resources used by bumblebees, we tracked bees before and after nest establishment and estimated home ranges using minimum convex polygons and kernel density methods. We also classified the pollen on their bodies to identify the floral resources they used from the floral species available at that time. We characterized land use for each bee as the relative proportion of GPS points inside of each land use. Bumblebees differed markedly in their movement behavior in relation to pre and post nest establishment. Bees moved over larger areas, and mostly within blueberry fields, before nest establishment. In contrast, after establishing the nest, the bees preferred the edges near forest plantations and they changed the nutritional resources to prefer wild floral species. Our study is the first to track queen bumblebee movements in an agricultural setting and relate movement changes across time and space with pollen resource availability. This study provides insight into the way bumblebee queens use different habitat elements at crucial periods in their lifecycle, showing the importance of mass flowering crops like blueberry in the first stages of queen's lifecycle, and how diversified landscapes help support bee populations as their needs changes during different phases of their lifecycle. The infection of honey bees, Apis mellifera L. (Hymenoptera: Apidae), by the microsporidian Nosema ceranae is one of the factors related to the increase in colony losses and the decrease in honey production observed in recent years. However, these effects seem to differ depending on the climate zone. The range and prevalence of N. ceranae have increased significantly in the last decades, with different consequences in northern and southern temperate areas. The existence of various isolates of N. ceranae from distant geographical areas, which probably exhibit different degrees of virulence, could explain the different responses of the bee to the infection. The aim of this work was to compare the effects of two N. ceranae isolates from different host populations from Argentina on honey bee survival at two ages post‐eclosion. Using cage experiments, we compared the development of infection of worker bees through the estimation of daily bee mortality and spore counts. Host subspecies identity analysis showed a strong similarity with Apis mellifera scutellata morphotype for the northern region, with a greater hybridization between subspecies with European origin toward the central and southern regions. Genetic characterization of isolates from the three regions indicated only the presence of N. ceranae. Infected bees survived longer than control bees, and bees infected at 5 days had a lower survival than those infected at 72 h with isolates from the three regions. These differences in survival matched the development of the N. ceranae infection, with differences in spore loads for infected bees at 5 days. Our studies showed that Nosema infection and survival varied among the different ages post emergence of workers, and both increased as the honey bee aged. These differences in susceptibility to infection could be related to the immune response of bees of different ages or to changes in the composition and succession of the intestinal microbiota throughout its ontogeny. The article focuses on the predation of a solitary bee nests of Centris muralis by the mammal Zaedyus pichiy. It says that observations were made from November 24-20, 2008 in Vinchina, La Rioja province in Argentina, wherein the bee nests occupied most of the plowed area. Results show that predation of the nests was dominant at first glance because of high density of mammal excavations. It adds that the mammals' liking for C. muralis nests is due to the loose soil and the high density of nests.
