The vast geographic distances and the economic importance of activities in re-mote areas like the Arctic demand new innovative radio-based solutions. There are numerous unsolved research challenges pertaining to (broadband) radio commu-nication coverage and satellite navigation reliability throughout the large region composed of the Norwegian Exclusive Economic Zone and the Arctic waters. This paper outlines these challenges and the current situation, in addition to iden-tifying future systems capable of mitigating the crucial lack of adequate electronic com-munications infrastructure in the High North.
