The article presents an analysis of Wole Soyinka's essay "Shakespeare and the Living Dramatist," which shows the contribution of drama to contemporary cultural identities. For Sonyinka, Shakespeare is a dead dramatist brought to life by continuing conversation among contemporary cultures. The premises of the essay are that Shakespeare's popularity in the Arab world is great and that "Antony and Cleopatra" shows an understanding of Egyptian culture. The possible reasons for the Arab fascination with Shakespeare are explained.
