The article, reprinted from the April 9, 2010 issue of the Pakistani newspaper "Dawn", discusses traditional versus modern interpretations of the place of women in Muslim societies, especially regarding the wearing of the "niqab" or face veil. Such practices in many Islamic countries are seen as more a product of Arab cultural traditions than Islamic religious doctrine.
