As the largest species of birds in Antarctica, penguins are called "biological indicators". Changes in the environment will cause population fluctuations. Therefore, developing a penguin census regularly will not only help carry out conservation activities but also provides a basis for studying climate change. Traditionally, scholars often use indirect methods, e.g., identifying penguin guano and establishing regression relationships to estimate the size of penguin colonies. In this paper, we explore the feasibility of automatic object detection algorithms based on aerial images, which locate each penguin directly. We build a dataset consisting of images taken at 400 m altitude over the island populated by Adelie penguins, which are cropped with a resolution of 640 × 640. To address the challenges of detecting minuscule penguins (often 10 pixels extent) amidst complex backgrounds in our dataset, we propose a new object detection network, named YoloPd (Yolo for penguin detection). Specifically, a multiple frequency features fusion module and a Bottleneck aggregation layer are proposed to strengthen feature representations for smaller penguins. Furthermore, the Transformer aggregation layer and efficient attention module are designed to capture global features with the aim of filtering out background interference. With respect to the latency/accuracy trade-off, YoloPd surpasses the classical detector Faster R-CNN by 8.5% in mean precision (mAP). It also beats the latest detector Yolov7 by 2.3% in F1 score with fewer parameters. Under YoloPd, the average counting accuracy reaches 94.6%, which is quite promising. In order to continuously monitor the phytoplankton growth in Antarctic coastal waters, an online mooring system was deployed in Great Wall Bay (unofficial name), King George Island, and both chlorophyll a (chl a) concentrations and environmental variables were monitored in a period between December 2010 and March 2011. Water temperatures showed a significant increasing trend (0.27–2.52°C), whereas the salinities displayed a decreasing trend (34.19–33.86). In general, phytoplankton biomass accumulated from mid-December and two significant blooms developed in January (3.18 μg l-1 and 4.75 μg l-1) and were then maintained at a relatively high level, with a transient bloom in late February (4.93 μg l-1). Sea-ice meltwater and terrestrial freshwater input caused by the increase of temperature played an important role in inducing phytoplankton blooms in early summer. The variation and stratification of temperature and salinity signals in different water layers, without total mixing, suggested lateral intrusion of oceanic waters with alternating levels of temperature and salinity and, presumably, phytoplankton as well. Meanwhile, chl a concentrations initially decreased with an increase in irradiance, indicating the shade-adapted characteristic of phytoplankton in early summer, and then gradually adapted to the increasing irradiance. Our results demonstrated the effectiveness and reliability of the online coastal mooring system for the monitoring of Antarctic coastal phytoplankton bloom and environmental conditions. Metal contents (Al, Ca, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Ti, and Zn) have been measured in 30 surface soils on Fildes Peninsula, King George Island, Antarctica, yielding values (in milligrams kilogram) of 41.57-80.65 (Zn), 2.76-60.52 (Pb), 0.04-0.34 (Cd), 7.18-25.03 (Ni), 43,255-70,534 (Fe), 449-1,401 (Mn), 17.10-64.90 (Cr), 1,440-25,684 (Mg), 10,941-49,354 (Ca), 51.10-176.50 (Cu), 4,388-12,707 (Ti), 28,038-83,849 (Al), and for Hg (in nanograms gram) 0.01-0.06. Relative cumulative frequency analysis was used to determine the baseline values for the 13 metals. Compared with adjacent areas in Antarctica, Mg and Ni are significantly lower, but Cu is significantly higher than that of McMurdo Station. Enrichment factor analysis and the geo-accumulation index method were applied in order to determine the extent of anthropogenic contamination, and both show that Pb, Cd, and Hg have been significantly increased by human activities. The existence of egg banks not only ensures the survival of zooplankton through harsh periods, but could also affect microevolutionary dynamics. Whether zooplankton at high latitudes can build up an egg bank in sediments, as occurs at lower latitudes, is still unknown. The distribution and age of viable resting eggs of the calanoid copepod Boeckella poppei Mrázek in sediments of two small freshwater lakes on King George Island were determined by slicing sediment cores at 1-cm intervals. Most viable resting eggs were found near the sediment surface, with abundance sharply declining to very low values at the depth of 5 cm, although eggs were present as deep as 9 cm in the sediments of Yanouhu Lake. The egg abundances in Xihu Lake and Yanouhu Lake were estimated to be 9.2 × 10 and 7.2 × 10 eggs m, respectively. Pb dating indicated a relatively constant sedimentation rate (0.023 cm year) in Xihu Lake, which was used to estimate the mean age (46.8 year), the maximum age (195.7 year), and the mortality rate (1.64 % year) of resting eggs of B. poppei in Xihu Lake. The accumulation of resting eggs with long-term viability in sediments provided the first evidence for the existence of egg banks in two Antarctic maritime lakes. An egg bank may serve as an overwintering strategy for B. poppei in Antarctica, enhance their ability to cope with random extreme changes, and contribute to their broad distribution. Geochemical observations of continental outcrops and marine sediments provide insights into the nature of bedrock and erosion in Antarctica. The accelerated melt of ice shelves has increased the flux of terrigenous materials to the marginal seas and has changed the sedimentological environment. We characterized the provenance of the surficial fine-grained detrital sediments in the front ends of major ice shelves in the Amundsen Sea, Ross Sea, and Prydz Bay sections through comparisons to proximal rocks using the elemental compositions, as well as the Sr and Nd isotopic compositions, of the clay-size (<2 μm) fraction, rock samples, and bulk sediments and some residual fractions. The results show that the 87Sr/86Sr ratios of clay-size sediments range from 0.70962 to 0.71662, 0.70936 to 0.71960, and 0.72569 to 0.73492, and that the εNd values range from −2.1 to +0.8, −10.9 to −1.43, and −22.3 to −17. 3 in the Amundsen Sea, Ross Sea, and Prydz Bay, respectively, while those of rocks range from 0.70350 to 0.77080 and from 5.1 to −22.4 in all three areas. Elemental compositions of both bulk sediments and the clay-size fraction in the Western Ross Sea have similar patterns to those in Prydz Bay, showing that most major elements (e.g., Mg, Ca, and Fe) are lower than in the upper continental crust (UCC). Chondrite-normalized rare earth elements (REEs) are highest in the bulk sediments of the Amundsen Sea and lowest in the clay-size fraction of all three sections. We concluded that clay-size sediments in the Western Amundsen Sea shelf are largely from the Eastern Amundsen Sea coastal area, while some sediments reflect contributions from the Hobbs Coast due to gravitational currents. The Western Ross Sea can receive sediments from both East Antarctica and West Antarctica, while the clay-size fractions of western sites in Transect R (a latitudinal transect near Inexpressible Island, East Antarctica) in this study are mainly from southeastern Victoria Land, transported northward by bottom currents. The contribution from coarse ice-rafted debris (IRD) is minor, possibly because of blocking by the Drygalski Ice Tongue. The clay-size sediments of Eastern Prydz Bay are largely contributed by Princess Elisabeth Land and western Wilhelm II Land, while those in Western Prydz Bay are possibly derived from the Lambert-Amery Ice Shelf system and the western coast. These very fine-grained sediments are generally affected by oceanic currents (e.g., Antarctic Coastal Currents and Antarctic Bottom Currents). Most residual fraction show very similar εNd values to the bulk of clay-size sediments. Ice melting in the Antarctic summer and upwelling of the Circumpolar Deep Water (CDW) near the Antarctic continent have been suggested to regulate the distributions of microbial communities. However, an understanding of these relationships in the Indian Ocean sector of East Antarctica is lacking. We report on the distribution and relationships of virio- and picoplankton at 77 stations (including 29 stations throughout the entire water column and 48 stations from the epipelagic zone) from 35° to 78°E and 62° to 70°S, covering the Cosmonaut Sea, Cooperation Sea and Prydz Bay. The epipelagic stations were grouped into four clusters based on the virio- and picoplankton composition and abundance. Clusters three and four, which corresponded with areas of upwelling and ice retreat, had high abundances of autotrophic picoeukaryotes; this resulted in subsequent high abundances of heterotrophic prokaryotes and virioplankton. Cluster one and two stations correspond with a high nutrient, low chlorophyll (HNLC) area, where the abundances of autotrophic and heterotrophic picoplankton are low. Viruses were significantly correlated with heterotrophic prokaryotes in the ice-covered areas but more strongly correlated with autotrophic picoeukaryotes in areas associated with ice-edge blooms. Throughout the water column in the Cooperation Sea, nutrient supply from the upwelling of the CDW induced an increased abundance of heterotrophic prokaryotes, particularly in the meso- and bathypelagic zones of stations in the northern part of the area. High viral abundances were detected in the meso- and bathypelagic zones of stations with high abundances of virio- and picoplankton in the epipelagic zone. This study shows that the summer distribution of virio- and picoplankton in the Indian Ocean sector of East Antarctica was mainly controlled by ice-melting and upwelling of the CDW. Abstract: Flow cytometry (FCM) is efficient in detecting both abundance and optical physiological parameters including cell size and cellular carbon content—side scatter (SSC), carotenoids—green and orange fluorescence (FL1 and FL2), and red fluorescence—chlorophylls (FL3) can be obtained by FCM. The utilization of these physiological parameters in indicating water masses in Prydz Bay was investigated for the first time. Picophytoplankton were very sensitive to hydrophysical changes and present distinct characteristics of water masses: Picophytoplankton in water closer to the Amery Ice Shelf were more affected by salinity than by temperature, while temperature became more important than salinity the nearer the picophytoplankton were to the deep sea. The picophytoplankton dealt with declines in light by increasing the size of cells, which increase the fixation of carbon. This can also be increased by high temperature and salinity. Pure water masses can increase the content of chlorophylls and cellular carbon. Generally, the distributions of all the five parameters at upper water depths were less affected by temperature and salinity than by water masses; and these parameters can be as indicators to Summer Surface Water (SSW), Winter Water (WW) and Continental Shelf Water (CSW).
