The effects of metamorphic reactions occurring during decompression were explored to understand their influence on the 40Ar–39Ar ages of micas. Monometamorphic metasediments from the Lepontine Alps (Switzerland) reached lower amphibolite facies during the Barrovian metamorphism related to the collision between European and African (Adria) continental plates. Mineral assemblages typically composed of garnet, plagioclase, biotite, muscovite and paragonite (or margarite) were screened for petrological equilibrium, to focus on samples that record a minimum degree of retrogression. X-ray diffraction data indicate that some mineral separates prepared for 40Ar–39Ar stepwise heating analysis are monomineralic, whereas others are composed of two white micas (muscovite with paragonite or margarite), or biotite and chlorite. In monomineralic samples 37Ar/39Ar and 38Ar/39Ar (proportional to Ca/K and Cl/K ratios) did not change and the resulting ages can be interpreted unambiguously. In mineral separates containing two white micas, Ca/K and Cl/K ratios were variable, reflecting non-simultaneous laboratory degassing of the two heterochemical Ar reservoirs. These ratios were used to identify each Ar reservoir and to unravel the age. In a chlorite–margarite–biotite calcschist equilibrated near 560°C and 0·65 GPa, biotite, margarite, and muscovite all yield ages around 18 Ma. At slightly higher grade (560–580°C, 0·8–0·9 GPa), the assemblage muscovite–paragonite–plagioclase is in equilibrium and remains stable during retrogression. In this case, muscovite and paragonite yield indistinguishable ages around 16·5 Ma. Above 590°C, paragonite was mostly consumed to form plagioclase >590°C, whereby the relict mica yields an age up to 5·6 Ma younger than muscovite. This partial or total resetting of the Ar clock in paragonite is interpreted to reflect plagioclase growth during decompression. Where biotite is present within this same assemblage, it systematically yields a younger age than muscovite, by 0·5–2 Ma. However, these biotites all show small amounts of retrograde chlorite formation. We conclude that even very minor chloritization of biotite is apparently a more effective process than temperature in resetting the Ar clock, as is the formation of plagioclase from paragonite decomposition. Multi-equilibrium thermobarometry is an excellent means to ensure that equilibrium in investigated samples is preserved, and this helps to obtain geologically meaningful metamorphic ages. However, even samples passing such equilibrium tests may still show retrograde effects that affect the Ar retention of micas. A more robust interpretation of such 40Ar–39Ar results may require use of a second geochronometer, such as U–Pb on monazite. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The distribution of REE minerals in metasedimentary rocks was investigated to gain insight into the stability of allanite, monazite and xenotime in metapelites. Samples were collected in the central Swiss Alps, along a well-established metamorphic field gradient that record conditions from very low grade metamorphism (250 °C) to the lower amphibolite facies (∼600 °C). In the Alpine metapelites investigated, mass balance calculations show that LREE are mainly transferred between monazite and allanite during the course of prograde metamorphism. At very low grade metamorphism, detrital monazite grains (mostly Variscan in age) have two distinct populations in terms of LREE and MREE compositions. Newly formed monazite crystallized during low-grade metamorphism (<440 °C); these are enriched in La, but depleted in Th and Y, compared with inherited grains. Upon the appearance of chloritoid (∼440–450 °C, thermometry based on chlorite–choritoid and carbonaceous material), monazite is consumed, and MREE and LREE are taken up preferentially in two distinct zones of allanite distinguishable by EMPA and X-ray mapping. Prior to garnet growth, allanite acquires two growth zones of clinozoisite: a first one rich in HREE + Y and a second one containing low REE contents. Following garnet growth, close to the chloritoid–out zone boundary (∼556–580 °C, based on phase equilibrium calculations), allanite and its rims are partially to totally replaced by monazite and xenotime, both associated with plagioclase (± biotite ± staurolite ± kyanite ± quartz). In these samples, epidote relics are located in the matrix or as inclusions in garnet, and these preserve their characteristic chemical and textural growth zoning, indicating that they did not experience re-equilibration following their prograde formation. Hence, the partial breakdown of allanite to monazite offers the attractive possibility to obtain in situ ages, representing two distinct crystallization stages. In addition, the complex REE + Y and Th zoning pattern of allanite and monazite are essential monitors of crystallization conditions at relatively low metamorphic grade. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The response of allanite to incipient melting was investigated in migmatites from the Tertiary Barrovian-type sequence of the Central Alps (southern Switzerland, northern Italy). Inheritance and new mineral growth were recorded in composite allanite grains sampled from meta-granitoids and leucosomes. Ion microprobe (SHRIMP) dating of high Th/U allanite cores in meta-granitoids yield Permian ages consistent with magmatic crystallisation dating protolith intrusion. In contrast, low Th/U allanite overgrowths and weakly-zoned allanite in meta-granitoids and leucosomes yield Alpine U–Pb intercept ages between 30±4 and 20±5Ma; these date allanite formation during the Barrovian cycle. Major and accessory mineral REE compositions suggest that Alpine allanite crystallised in the presence of a low-temperature melt. Whereas new zircon growth is rare in the migmatites, allanite readily recorded growth during the Alpine cycle. Allanite U–Th–Pb isotopes may therefore present a complementary approach to zircon for dating low-temperature partial melting, where the preservation of allanite is aided by low LREE solubility in hydrous granitic melt. The Th–Pb age is preferred to date high-Th magmatic allanite, however the U–Pb and Th–Pb ages of allanite overgrowths may differ (by up to 25%), and this demands a comparison of both U–Pb and Th–Pb isotopic systems to obtain a best estimate for the timing of low-Th allanite crystallisation. Protolith allanite preserves a substantial memory of its initial age in spite of upper amphibolite facies re-working during migmatisation (T =620–700°C), which places strong constraints on Pb closure temperature. Magmatic allanite contains <30% of initial (non-radiogenic) Pb, allanite in migmatites is characterised by an initial Pb of 20–70%, and subsolidus allanite has >60% of initial Pb. Therefore, the initial Pb may be useful as a sensor for the amount of melt present during allanite formation. The Pb isotope composition of allanite overgrowths indicates ⩽5% inherited radiogenic Pb from precursor allanite, which suggests efficient redistribution and homogenisation of Pb isotopes during the Alpine partial melting period.
