While deployment of white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) from seed orchards is increasing in Alberta, genetic gain is only considered in pure spruce stands due to uncertainties in measuring yields in mixedwood stands. To better understand the performance of improved spruce in mixedwood stands, we compared the effects of interspecific competition on growth of improved (1.9% height gain at a 100-year rotation) and unimproved spruce in northeastern Alberta. By age 8 years the improved spruce showed no advantage over the unimproved spruce in either height (1.36 ± 0.36 m vs. 1.42 ± 0.38 m) or diameter (23.68 ± 7.33 mm vs. 25.65 ± 6.85 mm), and the largest diameter trees were found in a nutrient-poor subxeric site. A distance-independent Lorimer's index including tree size ratio, combined with a power function, accounted for most of the growth variation in diameter and height from 2016 to 2017. The unimproved and improved spruce had different growth-competition curves across ecosites, and their height growth was less sensitive to competition than diameter growth. These results highlight several considerations for managing improved spruce, including (i) deploying higher genetic worth seedlots, (ii) developing realized gain trials with a good statistical design, and (iii) developing growth and yield functions for improved spruce in mixedwood stands. Climate change may have spatially variable impacts on growth of trees in topographically diverse environments, making generalizing across broad spatial and temporal extents inappropriate. Therefore, topography must be considered when analyzing growth response to climate. We address these topo-climatic relationships in the Canadian Rocky Mountains, focusing on lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta Douglas ex Louden) and interior spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss × Picea engelmannii hybrid Parry) growth response to climate, Palmer drought severity index (PDSI), aspect, and slope angle. Climate variables correlate with older lodgepole pine growth on south- and west-facing slopes, including previous August temperature, winter and spring precipitation, and previous late-summer and current spring PDSI, but younger lodgepole pine were generally less sensitive to climate. Climate variables correlate with interior spruce growth on all slope aspects, with winter temperature and PDSI important for young and old individuals. Numerous monthly growth–climate correlations are not temporally stable, with shifts over the past century, and response differs by slope aspect and angle. Both species are likely to be negatively affected by moisture stress in the future in some, but not all, topographic environments. Results suggest species-specific and site-specific spatiotemporally diverse climate–growth responses, indicating that climate change is likely to have spatially variable impacts on radial growth response in mountainous environments. Nine open-pollinated families of Picea glauca (Moench) Voss from the Region D1 Controlled Parentage Program (Alberta, Canada) were systematically chosen from fast, medium and slow-growth rankings based on breeding values for height from field progeny tests at age 30 years. Seeds from these families were sown and grown to age 3 years to analyze the performance and correlations of growth, physiological traits and expression of gibberellin-related genes, with and without elevated gibberellic acid 3 (GA3) application, under greenhouse conditions. We observed a significant interaction effect between families and growth groups subjected to 50 μg μl−1 of GA3 treatment, causing a decrease in apical internode length, diameter, volume and absolute transcript level for fast-growing families but an increase for families in the slow-growth group for the same traits. We also observed that in the apical internode, the gene PgGA20ox1 had significantly more relative expression under the elevated GA3 treatment than the control trees. In the stem, PgGA3ox1 showed a significantly higher relative expression under elevated GA3 treatment compared with control trees. Also, the slow-growth group showed more relative expression of PgGA20ox1 (in the apical internode) and PgGA3ox1 (in the stem) than the fast-growth group. The apical internode length and diameter significantly increased by 24% and 16%, respectively, with the hormone treatment in the slow growing group. In general, the PgGID1 and PgDELLA1 genes were upregulated and downregulated respectively, in spruce shoots under the GA3 treatment, meaning a positive feedback regulation by those genes were influencing PgGA20ox1 and PgGA3ox1 expression in that tissue type. Moreover, there was a significant correlation between absolute transcript levels of PgGA20ox1 in the apical internode and apical internode length, and absolute transcript levels of PgGA3ox1 in the stem and the diameter, in the fast-growth group families. This study shows that expression of GA genes is a limiting factor for growth in certain white spruce families with a complex feedback mechanism. Finally, absolute transcript levels of endogenous GA relative to growth parameters in juvenile seedlings could potentially be used to accelerate the early selection of families with inherently rapid apical and radial growth expansion. Climate-sensitive height–age models were developed for top height trees of trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.), jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.), and white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) in natural and reclaimed oil sands stands. We used stem analysis data collected from the Athabasca oil sands region in northern Alberta, Canada, and climate data generated by the ClimateWNA model. Height–age trajectories differed between top height trees in natural and reclaimed stands for jack pine and white spruce, but not for trembling aspen. At a given age, white spruce top height trees were taller and jack pine top height trees were shorter in reclaimed stands than those in natural stands, suggesting that it is easier to achieve similar forest productivity for oil sands sites reclaimed with white spruce stands than for sites reclaimed with jack pine stands. The principal climate variables were growing season (May to September) precipitation averaged over the previous 10 years for trembling aspen and jack pine and summer (June to August) precipitation averaged over the previous 10 years for white spruce. Regionally fitted allometric equations for individual trees and root-to-shoot ratio values are normally used to estimate local aboveground and belowground forest biomass, respectively. However, uncertainties arising from such applications are poorly understood. We developed equations for both aboveground and belowground biomass using destructive sampling for three dominant upland boreal tree species in northwestern Alberta, Canada. Compared with our equations, the diameter-based national equations derived for use across Canada underestimated aboveground biomass for Picea glauca (Moench) Voss but gave reasonable estimates for Populusbalsamifera L. and Populus tremuloides Michx. The national equations based on both tree diameter and height overestimated aboveground biomass for the Populus species but underestimated it for Picea glauca in our study area. The approach of root-to-shoot ratio proposed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) overestimated belowground biomass by 16%–41%, depending on forest cover type, in comparison with our values estimated directly on site, with the greatest bias in deciduous-dominated stands. When the general allometric equations for aboveground biomass and the root-to-shoot ratio for belowground biomass were combined to estimate stand biomass, overestimation could be as high as 18% in our study area. The results of our study support the development of improved regional allometric equations for more accurate local-scale estimations. Survival and growth of Siberian larch (SL, Larix sibirica Ledeb.) were compared with those of three conifer species native to Alberta, Canada: lodgepole pine (LP; Pinus contorta var. latifolia Engelm. ex S. Watson), white spruce (WS, Picea glauca (Moench) Voss), and jack pine (JP, Pinus banksiana Lamb.) at 12, 10, and 3 trial locations, respectively. The average data age was 18 years (range: 3 to 27 years). Survival of SL averaged 4.2% and 6.5% worse than LP and WS, respectively, while it was 5% better than JP. SL grew 25%, 94%, and 23% taller than LP, WS, and JP, respectively. Stem forking rates were similar between SL and LP, WS, and JP. The best seed sources for Alberta were mature trees established in Alberta and Saskatchewan of unknown initial provenances. The Russian Altai Mountain source grew well at high elevations, while the Finnish Raivola performed well in the northern, low-elevation area. Open-pollinated progeny tests of 58 families planted in five diverse locations yielded individual-tree narrow-sense heritabilities and family mean heritabilities for height at age 15 of 0.15 and 0.59, respectively. The type B between-site genetic correlation was 0.44, indicating a strong genotype × environment interaction. Survival and growth of planted white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) were assessed at year 15 in boreal mixedwood stands of northern Alberta, Canada, in stands that were deciduous-dominated prior to logging or were conifer-dominated. Three overstory retention levels (0%, 50%, and 75% retention) and four site preparation treatments (mound, high speed mix, scalp, and no treatment) were evaluated. In deciduous-dominated stands, planted spruce performed best in the 50% retention; here, stem volume was at least double that of any other retention treatment after 15 years. In contrast, spruce had reduced growth in coniferous-dominated stands in both 50% and 75% retention treatments compared with the 0% retention. Survival of planted spruce was unaffected by level of retention, but survival was lower in coniferous-dominated stands than in deciduous-dominated stands; in the coniferous-dominated stands, survival was better with mounding and mixing and lowest with scalp treatments. All height variables tended to be greater in the mix and mound site preparation treatments. Finally, the best estimates of future total growth (regenerated spruce and deciduous combined) in the coniferous-dominated stands were in the clearcut treatment. In terms of regenerated spruce growth, the best estimates occurred in the deciduous-dominated – 50% retention stand planted with soil mixing–mounding treatments, where projected growth of spruce was comparable with that of open-grown and tended stands in Alberta's boreal forests. Although sustainable forest management is accepted worldwide in concept, challenges in the methods of implementation remain. Using local data sets from Alberta, Canada, we show that a simulation approach can assist the implementation of sustainable forest management by improved understanding of product potential and other forest ecosystem goods and services that forests can provide for a given forest inventory. This will assist facilitating trade-offs among them for an optimal wood utilization strategy to achieve sustainable forest management. In this example, effects of wood utilization standard on merchantable volume, lumber volume, and number of trees that can produce at least one piece of lumber are quantified, and a conversion method for wood volumes under different wood utilization standards is presented. Wood utilization standard is the combination of stump height and diameter inside bark at merchantable height, which considerably influences available volume quantity of forest resource. However, such influences have not been quantified for sustainable forest management implementation. Our results not only confirmed that merchantable and lumber volumes increased with decreasing stump height and diameter inside bark at merchantable height, but also revealed that this trend will not hold when diameter inside bark at merchantable height is less than 7 cm. Density manipulation of overstory aspen provides increased light levels to promote growth of understory spruce, while it may also impact the air and soil temperature. We monitored temperature for three growing seasons in young mixedwood stands of variable density at two boreal locations in Alberta, Canada. Results indicate that partial aspen cover provides frost protection that may be location specific. Mean air temperature was similar or increased slightly across aspen densities during the growing season, while mean soil temperature significantly increased with decreasing overstory cover. The amount of accumulated air and soil heat over the growing season was inversely related to aspen density. Vertical and horizontal patterns of light within gaps and expansion of trees into gaps were examined in young stands dominated by trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) in northeastern British Columbia and northwestern Alberta. Lateral growth of branches of aspen edge trees averaged 15.2 cm/year and was similar to crown expansion rates reported for edge trees in eastern North America. Branches growing into gaps were significantly longer than those growing away from gaps and are likely to lead to gap shrinkage and reductions in light within gaps. However, height growth of edge trees was not significantly different from that of trees within the surrounding stands. Models describing relationships between diffuse transmittance and locations within gaps and surrounding stand height were developed in this paper. Sky view angle (SVA) was found to be effective for predicting transmittance to different locations within gaps. When SVA values exceed 1.2 (at the B.C. sites), white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) will receive <40% of full sunlight, which is less than optimal for spruce height growth. In mixedwood boreal forests of western Canada, stands classified as “pure deciduous” by forest inventories sometimes contain a few large white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) trees among or emerging from the canopy. These trees are important as regeneration seed sources and for habitat structure. Neither their abundance nor the characteristics of stands in which they occur have previously been quantified. Of 275 “pure aspen” stands in northeastern Alberta, 19.6% contained at least one such spruce detectable in an aerial photograph. These trees were found in stands across the range of sampled canopy heights, densities, age classes, and stand sizes and were often present in the interior of stands, not just on the perimeter. The frequency of 3 ha cells containing at least one spruce was related to (i) stand shape and size, (ii) amount of mature white spruce in adjacent forest, (iii) canopy height, (iv) stand age, and (v) stand density. We conclude that such trees are relatively abundant and widely distributed within the boreal mixedwood forests of Alberta. There is presently no provision to maintain this landscape element within managed forests. More information is needed to determine if or how they should be considered in forest management planning. Abstract: Forest floor chemistry and microbial communities can be influenced by forest land management, such as harvesting and prescribed burning. Here, we used phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) and multiple carbon-source substrate-induced respiration (MSIR) analyses to characterize microbial communities of deciduous, mixedwood and coniferous boreal forest floors with different silvicultural treatments. The sites were stem-only harvested with 10% retention, and silvicultural treatments consisting of slash being evenly distributed on the site and then burned, or not burned. The burned sites exhibited lower microbial biomass and greater NO3 − concentrations than the unburned sites. However, burning appeared to have no effect on forest floor microbial community structure or function. On the other hand, during drier months (August sampling), the composition of forest floor microbial communities appeared to be strongly influenced by topographic position rather than stand related differences. Harvested sites located at higher elevations had similar microbial communities, regardless of the overstory composition, while coniferous and mixedwood sites located at lower elevations had similarly structured microbial communities that were distinct from deciduous sites. Differences in microclimatic conditions of the forest floor between higher elevation sites and lower elevations sites may select for some microbial groups over others. Indicator analysis found a strong association of a fungal PLFA biomarker (20:1ω9c), with sites at higher elevation, while a biomarker for actinomycetes (10Me19:0) was strongly associated with deciduous sites at lower elevation. Structural differences in microbial communities observed between sites at higher and lower elevations appear to be linked to seasonal patterns in moisture, as previous studies in this region found no apparent effect of elevation during times of higher monthly precipitation. Abstract: With the growing interest in silvicultural techniques that more closely emulate natural disturbance regimes, there is a need to better understand how partial harvesting affects the soil microbial community in stands with varying ecological characteristics, e.g., tree species composition. Four and a half and 5.5 years post-harvest, we used phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) and substrate-induced respiration (SIR) analyses to compare the microbial biomass and microbial community structure of forest floors from stands dominated by white spruce (Picea glauca; SPRUCE) or by trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides; ASPEN) and from mixed-species (MIXED) stands in northern Alberta, Canada, that had been clearcut, partial-cut with 20% retention, partial-cut with 50% retention or left uncut (controls). PLFA and SIR analyses revealed that ASPEN forest floors supported a larger microbial biomass with a very different community structure than MIXED or SPRUCE forest floors. The microbial community structure of these soils appeared to be strongly affected by the presence of white spruce and the composition of the understory vegetation. There were no effects of timber harvesting detected within or across stand types on any of the variables measured, with the exception of the PLFA 16:1ω5, which was relatively more abundant in the clearcuts and 50% retention treatments than in the uncut controls, perhaps in response to an increased forest floor pH and grass cover in the disturbed areas. The resilience to timber harvesting of the forest floors from these stands may be the result of efforts to minimize soil disturbance during harvesting and to allow vegetation to regenerate naturally. Alterations in the chemical properties of the forest floor following clear-cut harvesting may have implications for forest productivity in boreal stands. We used proximate analysis, carbon-13 (13C) isotopic determination, and cross-polarization, magic-angle spinning (CPMAS) 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy to examine differences in the characteristics of the forest floors from uncut stands and clear-cut stands dominated by white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss; SPRUCE) and trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.; ASPEN) in northern Alberta. Proximate analysis revealed no difference in the chemical properties of forest floors from clear-cut and uncut stands in either stand type, but the acid-insoluble residue of forest floors from clear-cut ASPEN stands was enriched in 13C compared with those from uncut ASPEN stands. CPMAS 13C NMR spectroscopy revealed that forest floors from clearcuts were enriched in total aromatic C, particularly in ASPEN stands, and depleted in phenolic C, particularly in SPRUCE stands. These patterns indicate that forest floors from the clearcuts have become more humified, which may reflect stand-type differences in the amount of labile C available to the forest-floor microbial community and reductions in above- and below-ground inputs to the forest floor following clear-cutting in both stand types. This study assessed the impact of various harvesting practices (including those designed to emulate natural disturbances) on ectomycorrhizae (ECM) associated with white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) in northwestern Alberta, Canada. Treatments included clearcuts, partial cuts (dispersed green-tree retention with 20%, 50%, and 75% residual live trees, and aggregated green-tree retention), unharvested control sites, and a burned stand. The percentage of active white spruce root tips and ECM richness and diversity, as observed in soil cores collected throughout the study site, all decreased with increasing disturbance intensity. Effects were particularly pronounced in clearcuts, machine corridors used for access by harvesting equipment in the dispersed green-tree retention stands, and in burned areas. Reductions in ECM biodiversity could be attributed to the sensitivity of late-stage ectomycorrhizae (e.g., Cortinarius spp., Lactarius spp., and Russula spp.) to soil disturbances and changes in microclimate associated with harvesting or burning. Areas of dispersed and aggregated green-tree retention were not dramatically different than unharvested forest in terms of root tip density and ECM richness, diversity, and composition. Harvesting practices that retain a percentage of residual live trees, either dispersed throughout the cutting unit or in aggregated patches, could be an effective means of maintaining ectomycorrhizal biodiversity at the stand level. Fungi colonizing fine roots of containerized Picea glauca seedlings were assessed in four large conifer nurseries in northern Alberta. PCR amplification of fungal rDNA (internal transcribed spacer and a portion of the 5? end of the large subunit gene) from random samples of fine feeder roots gave between 1 and 4 amplicons per seedling. Amplicons were either separated by electrophoresis and sequenced directly, or cloned and sequenced. The resulting sequences were compared to sequences obtained from cultures established from seedling roots and from GenBank by maximum parsimony analysis. ITS sequences formed 11 distinct clades, each including at least one reference sequence. The ectomycorrhizal basidiomycetes Thelephora americana and Amphinema byssoides were dominant, whereas ascomycetes were less common. Fungi with sequences similar to members of the Heleotiales which form ericoid mycorrhizas were also present. Correspondence analysis revealed strong positive and negative associations among fungal taxa as well as an influence of applied fertilizer level on fungal diversity and species composition. Fallen logs of trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) and white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) at various stages of decomposition were sampled from undisturbed and 1-, 14-, and 28-year-old post-fire and post-harvest sites in northern Alberta and studied for differences in the associated microfungus communities. Wood samples were plated directly onto each of six different media and, from these, fungal species were identified and enumerated over a 24-month period. Approximately 10 000 isolates were obtained, representing 292 species of filamentous microfungi, including 41 ascomycetes, 29 zygomycetes, and 222 mitosporic fungi. The most commonly isolated species were Trichoderma viride (Gray) Pers., Rhinocladiella atrovirens Nannf., Penicillium pinophilum Hedgcock, and Mortierella ramanniana (Moller) Linnem. Cluster analysis and ordination of microfungus communities in logs showed that the tree species of the log had the greatest influence on the species composition of communities. Fungus community composition was also correlated with the stage of decomposition. Species richness was highest in logs from undisturbed sites and lowest in logs from the most recently disturbed sites. Species diversity (Shannon-Weaver) was only slightly higher at undisturbed sites than at disturbed sites. The boreal forest is the single largest terrestrial store of carbon on Earth, and approximately 25% of these carbon stocks are in the forest floor. Climate change is expected to alter boreal vegetation, and aspen-dominated stands will replace conifers in Western Canada. We investigated how these vegetation shifts could affect the composition and function of soil microbial communities, using forest floor samples from the Ecosystem Management Emulating Natural Disturbance (EMEND) project in northwestern Alberta, Canada. Soil microbial communities were surveyed in rhizosphere and bulk forest floor of 17-year-old spruce clear-cuts where aspen was naturally regenerating, mature stands of aspen and spruce, and 17-year-old clear-cuts of aspen. Phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) analysis was used to characterize microbial community composition and multiple substrate induced respiration (MSIR) to quantify microbial community functional capacity. Carbon source utilization by microorganisms was investigated through natural abundance isotope analysis of individual PLFAs. Rhizosphere samples had a significantly higher proportion of fungi and a higher gram-negative to gram-positive bacteria ratio compared to bulk soil. Fungi and gram-negative bacteria biomarkers in the rhizosphere showed 13C depletion compared to bulk forest floor, indicating that they had assimilated more newly-photosynthesized carbon than bulk forest floor microbes. Aspen trees exerted a greater influence over their rhizospheres than spruce trees in terms of microbial community composition and functional capacity, and aspen rhizospheres showed the highest basal respiration. In less than two decades, aspen regeneration in former spruce stands shifted the composition of microbial communities towards that of native aspen stands, with the rhizosphere microbiome responding more quickly than bulk forest floor. • Tree species determine the soil fungal composition, especially in the root fraction. • Tree effects dominated, even when accounting for chemistry and spatial distribution. • In soil DNA, spruce samples contained more ectomycorrhizal and pine samples more saprotrophic taxa. • Siberian larch soils were associated with a greater abundance of pathogenic taxa. • Sporocarp surveys found more ectomycorrhizal and saprotrophic taxa in pine stands. Gateway Hill is a 104-ha area in the oil sands region of Alberta, which was operationally reclaimed and reforested in the late 1980s and certified as reclaimed in 2007/08. In 2014, ∼30 years after reclamation was completed, we began studies with the main objective to determine the soil fungi present at the site. Sporocarp surveys in 2014 and 2016 were used to supplement metagenomic analyses of soil fungi in jack pine (Pinus banksiana), white spruce (Picea glauca), and Siberian larch (Larix sibirica) stands. Fungal internal transcribed spacer amplicons of DNA extracted from forest floor, root, and fine soil fractions were sequenced using Roche 454 pyrosequencing in 2014. Coarse soil reclamation samples and soil samples from a nearby unmined spruce stand were sequenced with Illumina in 2016. Sequenced community assemblages were first assessed using unconstrained multivariate analyses, and then using (partially) constrained ordination techniques to directly account for the effects of tree species and other confounding factors. Based on soil DNA analyses the relative abundance of ectomycorrhizal taxa was greater in spruce stands, saprotrophs were more abundant in pine stands, and pathogens were more abundant in larch stands. Associations of fungal taxa, mostly saprotrophs and ectomycorrhizae, with tree species were especially prominent in root fractions. The sporocarp survey found sporcarp abundance was greatest in pine stands and they tended to have more ectomycorrhizal taxa and spruce and larch stands more saprotrophic taxa. The effects of tree species on fungal taxa differed between the sporocarp surveys and soil DNA analyses: many of the fungi identified by sporocarp presence were not detected by soil DNA sequencing, whereas the latter method detected many more species in all trophic groups. Both DNA sequencing methods showed that many operational taxonomic units were preferentially associated with either spruce or pine stands. Though not definitive, preliminary examination of soil fungi using the Illumina platform showed that a natural spruce stand at the base of Gateway Hill had greater species richness than did reclaimed spruce stands. The results of this study show that communities of soil fungi have become established since the initiation of reclamation. Further work is underway to compare this reclamation site to other unmined forest sites. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
