Abstract

The article discusses the development of pipe crawlers that ferret out corroded sections of the 800-mile-long Trans-Alaska Pipeline with the use of nondestructive testing (NDT) such as gamma radiation and digital X-rays by Envision CmosXray LLC. The engineers at Envision, in wanting to come up with a single machine that is able to handle pipe diameters that range from four inches to four feet, developed four small servomotors, one per wheel to keep pipe crawlers balanced.
