Excess ground ice formation and melt drive surface heave and settlement, and are critical components of the water balance in Arctic soils. Despite the importance of excess ice for the geomorphology, hydrology and biogeochemistry of permafrost landscapes, we lack fine‐scale estimates of excess ice profiles. Here, we introduce a Bayesian inversion method based on remotely sensed subsidence. It retrieves near‐surface excess ice profiles by probing the ice content at increasing depths as the thaw front deepens over summer. Ice profiles estimated from Sentinel‐1 interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) subsidence observations at 80 m resolution were spatially associated with the surficial geology in two Alaskan regions. In most geological units, the estimated profiles were ice poor in the central and, to a lesser extent, the upper active layer. In a warm summer, units with ice‐rich permafrost had elevated inferred ice contents at the base of the active layer and the (previous years') upper permafrost. The posterior uncertainty and accuracy varied with depth. In simulations, they were best (≲0.1) in the central active layer, deteriorating (≳0.2) toward the surface and permafrost. At two sites in the Brooks Foothills, Alaska, the estimates compared favorably to coring‐derived profiles down to 35 cm, while the increase in excess ice below the long‐term active layer thickness of 40 cm was only reproduced in a warm year. Pan‐Arctic InSAR observations enable novel observational constraints on the susceptibility of permafrost landscapes to terrain instability and on the controls, drivers and consequences of ground ice formation and loss. When the ice melts due to warming or disturbance, the ground becomes unstable, threatening infrastructure, water resources and ecosystem services. We lack fine‐scale ground ice maps across essentially the entire Arctic, limiting our ability to sustainably plan in the Arctic. Here, we develop the first satellite‐based technique for mapping ground ice near the surface, including seasonal ground ice in that part that freezes and thaws every year and also perennial ground ice in soil that had previously remained frozen for long times. The central idea is to measure the subsidence over the summer from satellites and relate this to the ice profile near the surface. In exceptionally warm summers, layers that had previously been frozen for a long time may thaw; where they are ice‐rich, elevated but limited subsidence toward the end of this summer can be used to identify areas whose large ice contents render them susceptible to long‐term terrain instability. The regional to pan‐Arctic maps our novel method can provide promise to bolster sustainable planning and stewardship in the Arctic and to help us understand how these landscapes are changing. The 2015 spring flood of the Sagavanirktok River inundated large swaths of tundra as well as infrastructure near Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. Its lasting impact on permafrost, vegetation, and hydrology is unknown but compels attention in light of changing Arctic flood regimes. We combined InSAR and optical satellite observations to quantify subdecadal permafrost terrain changes and identify their controls. While the flood locally induced quasi‐instantaneous ice‐wedge melt, much larger areas were characterized by subtle, spatially variable post‐flood changes. Surface deformation from 2015 to 2019 estimated from ALOS‐2 and Sentinel‐1 InSAR varied substantially within and across terrain units, with greater subsidence on average in flooded locations. Subsidence exceeding 5 cm was locally observed in inundated ice‐rich units and also in inactive floodplains. Overall, subsidence increased with deposit age and thus ground ice content, but many flooded ice‐rich units remained stable, indicating variable drivers of deformation. On average, subsiding ice‐rich locations showed increases in observed greenness and wetness. Conversely, many ice‐poor floodplains greened without deforming. Ice wedge degradation in flooded locations with elevated subsidence was mostly of limited intensity, and the observed subsidence largely stopped within 2 years. Based on remote sensing and limited field observations, we propose that the disparate subdecadal changes were influenced by spatially variable drivers (e.g., sediment deposition, organic layer), controls (ground ice and its degree of protection), and feedback processes. Remote sensing helps quantify the heterogeneous interactions between permafrost, vegetation, and hydrology across permafrost‐affected fluvial landscapes. An increase in Arctic shallow landsliding is a potential consequence of climate warming. Warmer summer‐air temperatures and larger rainfall events drive heat into the active layer, melting ice and decreasing soil shear stress. Topography has the potential to exacerbate landsliding by controlling the distribution of ground ice and the movement of water in the subsurface. We demonstrate that shallow Arctic landslides initiate in zero‐order drainage basins consistent with models of shallow landsliding in non‐permafrost environments. However, the low average slopes and low concavity of Arctic hillslopes cannot create pore‐water pressures high enough to generate landsliding. Instead, two‐dimensional slope stability modeling suggests that the vertical distribution of ground‐ice distributions controls landslide susceptibility. High ground‐ice concentrations close to the potential failure plane act as a stronger control than high average ice volumes or rapid thawing. Our results demonstrate that landslide susceptibility is strongly affected by topographic controls on ground ice and hydrology. Thawing creates meltwater, decreasing the strength of the soil, and in some cases initiating landsliding. We mapped the location of shallow landslides in Alaska. These landslides demonstrate a clear spatial pattern, forming above the channel network in depressions called zero‐order drainage basins. The similarity between the spatial patterns of permafrost landslides and rainfall‐triggered landslides suggests that the topography, hydrology, and spatial distribution of ground ice act to enhance landslide potential in zero order drainage basins. Modeling of hydrology and ground ice effects on slope stability, suggests a weak hydrologic control and a strong ground ice control on landslide triggering. Here we argue that topography affects the distribution of ground ice, in particular its concentration at potential landslide failure planes. We conclude that the strong relationship between topography and landsliding in the Arctic could improve estimates of shallow landslide susceptibility. Riverbank erosion in yedoma regions strongly affects landscape evolution, biogeochemical cycling, sediment transport, and organic and nutrient fluxes to the Arctic Ocean. Since 2006, we have studied the 35‐m‐high Itkillik River yedoma bluff in northern Alaska, whose retreat rate during 1995–2010 was up to 19 m/yr, which is among the highest rates worldwide. This study extends our previous observations of bluff evolution and shows that average bluff‐top retreat rates decreased from 8.7–10.0 m/yr during 2011–2014 to 4.5–5.8 m/yr during 2015–2019, and bluff‐base retreat rates for the same time period decreased from 4.7–7.5 m/yr to 1.3–1.7 m/yr, correspondingly. Bluff evolution initially involves rapid fluvio‐thermal erosion at the base and block collapse, following by slowdown in river erosion and continuing thermal denudation of the retreating headwall with formation of baydzherakhs. Eventually, input of sediment and water from the headwall diminishes, vegetation develops, and slope gradually stabilizes. The step change in the fluvial–geomorphic system has resulted in a 60% decline in the volumetric mobilization of sediment and organic carbon between 2011 and 2019. Our findings stress the importance of sustained observations at key permafrost region study sites to elucidate critical information related to past and potential landscape evolution in the Arctic. Stephen Taber's early work on ice segregation and frost heaving was far ahead of its time. His laboratory experiments regarding ice segregation led to our current understanding of frost heave by civil and geotechnical engineers building roads and other structures in cold regions. It also laid the foundation for later process‐oriented field studies of cold‐climate geomorphic processes. Taber's 1943 regional monograph on the origin and history of perennially frozen ground in Alaska, published by the Geological Society of America, was the earliest example of regional cryostratigraphy, and pioneered the regional permafrost and Quaternary studies undertaken later by Katasonov, Popov, Mackay, Péwé, Hopkins, and others. An important dimension of Taber's Alaska work was his application of knowledge gained through laboratory experimentation to the interpretation of ground‐ice exposures in the field. While S. W. Muller is widely regarded as the "father" of permafrost studies in North America, Taber is properly viewed as the "progenitor" of cryostratigraphic studies, although he is not yet widely regarded as such. This study uses archival resources to provide historical context regarding the development of Taber's monograph, to investigate details about the review and publication process it underwent, and to explore the question of why it remains undervalued. To explore the possibility of using ground ice archives for studies of the cosmogenic radionuclide 10Be, we analyzed the beryllium isotopes in ice wedges exposed in the Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) Permafrost Tunnel and the Barrow Permafrost Tunnel in Alaska. We determined the concentrations of 10Be and 9Be in samples pretreated following two procedures: acidification before (procedure A) and after (procedure B) removal of particles. The 10Be and 9Be concentrations spanned wide ranges. Concentrations in procedure A samples were higher than those in procedure B samples. The 10Be/9Be ratios fell within a narrow range, and values from CRREL (about 8.5 × 10−9) and Barrow (about 7 × 10−9) were of the same order of magnitude. Further studies are needed to validate our findings and assess the feasibility of using the 10Be/9Be ratio of syngenetic ice wedges for reconstruction of 10Be variations due to cosmogenic and environmental changes, and radiometric dating of ice-wedge sequences that contain very old (beyond 1 Ma) ice. Ice cellars are a natural form of refrigeration constructed within permafrost. They are traditionally employed by indigenous Arctic peoples to store harvested wildlife. Recent reports from Alaska indicate that ice cellars are 'failing' through mechanisms that include flooding and collapse, which are often attributed to climate change. In cooperation with local stakeholders, we instrumented five cellars to record internal air temperature in Barrow, Alaska. A decade of thermal monitoring (2005-2015) revealed little thermal change. A survey was also conducted to identify all known ice cellar locations in Barrow. A total of seventy-one cellars were catalogued and mapped. The large number of catalogued cellars shows the importance and great potential loss for the Barrow community if widespread failures were to occur. Although climate change has considerable potential for affecting ice cellars, sediment chemistry, local hydrology, and urbanization are also important impacting factors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Yedoma, a suite of syngenetically frozen silty ice- and organic-rich deposits with large ice wedges that accumulated during the late Pleistocene, is vulnerable to thermal degradation and erosion because of the extremely high ice contents. This degradation can result in significant surface subsidence and retreat of coastal bluffs and riverbanks with large consequences to landscape evolution, infrastructure damage, and water quality. We used remote sensing and field observations to assess patterns and rates of riverbank erosion at a 35-m-high active yedoma bluff along the Itkillik River in northern Alaska. The total volumetric ground-ice content—including wedge, segregated, and pore ice—was estimated to be ~ 86%. The process of riverbank erosion and stabilization include three main stages typical of the areas with ice-rich permafrost: (1) thermal erosion combined with thermal denudation, (2) thermal denudation, and (3) slope stabilization. Active riverbank erosion at the main study site started in July 1995, when the Itkillik River changed its channel. The total retreat of the riverbank during 1995–2010 within different segments of the bluff varied from 180 to 280 m; the average retreat rate for the most actively eroded part of the riverbank was almost 19 m/y. From August 2007 to August 2011, the total retreat varied from 10 to almost 100 m. The average retreat rate for the whole 680-m-long bluff was 11 m/y. For the most actively eroded central part of the bluff (150 m long) it was 20 m/y, ranging from 16 to 24 m/y. More than 180,000 m 3 of ground ice and organic-rich frozen soil, or almost 70,000 metric tons (t) of soil solids including 880 t of organic carbon, were transported to the river from the retreating bank annually. Permafrost temperatures have increased in Alaska since the 1960s, and many impacts of climate warming are associated with permafrost thaw. Thaw of permafrost caused by increases in permafrost temperature may result in thaw settlement and significant damage to infrastructure. The goal of this research is to identify regions of Alaska at risk from thaw subsidence related to climate warming and to determine the relative risk of those regions. We developed a Permafrost Settlement Hazard Index (PSHI) by analyzing anticipated climate warming and the ecological characteristics that regulate thaw subsidence. This analysis provides statistical verification that the discontinuous permafrost region is at more risk of thaw settlement than other regions of Alaska. In addition, it estimates future thaw subsidence risk in Alaska in 2050 using future temperature increases projected by published climate models. Results indicate increased thaw subsidence risk in northern Alaska in 2050, with the greatest increase expected in parts of northwest Alaska. However, in the interior and southwest Alaska, projected disappearance of permafrost from the surface will reduce the risk of thaw subsidence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Ground ice in the upper permafrost of the Beaufort Sea coast of Alaska was studied from 2005 to 2008 at 65 field sites located between Point Barrow and the Canadian border. The main terrain units in the studied area include (1) the primary surface of the coastal plain; (2) drained-lake basins; (3) low foothills (yedoma); (4) deltas and tidal flats; and (5) sand dunes. Wedge ice is the main type of massive ground ice, and ice-wedge polygons occurred on nearly all land surfaces. The volumetric content of wedge ice for the area varies from 3% to 50% between various terrain units with average value of about 11% for the entire coast. The highest content of wedge ice (about 50%) is typical of yedoma terrain, which occurred in a small segment at the coast of the Camden Bay. At the primary surface of the western region of the Arctic Coastal Plain, wedge-ice content reached almost 30%, with an average value of about 14%. Slightly smaller values were estimated for the primary surface of the eastern region of the Arctic Coastal Plain and for old drained-lake basins. Other types of massive ground ice included thermokarst-cave ice, ice cores of pingos, and a rare occurrence of folded massive ice at Barter Island. The content of segregated ice in organic and mineral soils between ice wedges was very high at most of the study sites. The total average volumetric ice content (due to wedge, segregated, and pore ice) for the whole area was 77%, ranging from 43% in eolian sand to 89% in yedoma. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Pingos are circular to elongate ice-cored mounds that form by injection and freezing of pressurized water in near-surface permafrost. Here we use a digital surface model (DSM) derived from an airborne Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (IfSAR) system to assess the distribution and morphometry of pingos within a 40,000km2 area on the western Arctic Coastal Plain of northern Alaska. We have identified 1247 pingo forms in the study region, ranging in height from 2 to 21m, with a mean height of 4.6m. Pingos in this region are of hydrostatic origin, with 98% located within 995 drained lake basins, most of which are underlain by thick eolian sand deposits. The highest pingo density (0.18km−2) occurs where streams have reworked these deposits. Morphometric analyses indicate that most pingos are small to medium in size (<200m diameter), gently to moderately sloping (<30°), circular to slightly elongate (mean circularity index of 0.88), and of relatively low height (2 to 5m). However, 57 pingos stand higher than 10m, 26 have a maximum slope greater than 30°, and 42 are larger than 200m in diameter. Comparison with a legacy pingo dataset based on 1950s stereo-pair photography indicates that 66 may have partially or completely collapsed over the last half-century. However, we mapped over 400 pingos not identified in the legacy dataset, and identified only three higher than 2m to have formed between ca. 1955 and ca. 2005, indicating that caution should be taken when comparing contemporary and legacy datasets derived by different techniques. This comprehensive database of pingo location and morphometry based on an IfSAR DSM may prove useful for land and resource managers as well as aid in the identification of pingo-like features on Mars. Abstract: Extremely ice-rich syngenetic permafrost, or yedoma, developed extensively under the cold climate of the Pleistocene in unglaciated regions of Eurasia and North America. In Alaska, yedoma occurs in the Arctic Foothills, the northern part of the Seward Peninsula, and in interior Alaska. A remarkable 33-m-high exposure along the lower Itkillik River in northern Alaska opened an opportunity to study the unmodified yedoma, including stratigraphy, particle-size distribution, soil carbon contents, morphology and quantity of segregated, wedge, and thermokarst-cave ice. The exposed permafrost sequence comprised seven cryostratigraphic units, which formed over a period from >48,000 to 5,000 14C yr BP, including: 1) active layer; 2) intermediate layer of the upper permafrost; 3–4) two yedoma silt units with different thicknesses of syngenetic ice wedges; 5) buried peat layer; 6) buried intermediate layer beneath the peat; and 7) silt layer with short ice wedges. This exposure is comparable to the well known Mus-Khaya and Duvanny Yar yedoma exposures in Russia. Based on our field observations, literature sources, and interpretation of satellite images and aerial photography, we have developed a preliminary map of yedoma distribution in Alaska.
