Hosting 1460 plant and 126 vertebrate endemic species, the Great Escarpment (hereafter, Escarpment) forms a semi‐circular "amphitheater" of mountains girdling southern Africa from arid west to temperate east. Since arid and temperate biota are usually studied separately, earlier studies overlooked the biogeographical importance of the Escarpment as a whole. Bats disperse more widely than other mammalian taxa, with related species and intraspecific lineages occupying both arid and temperate highlands of the Escarpment, providing an excellent model to address this knowledge gap. We investigated patterns of speciation and micro‐endemism from modeled past, present, and future distributions in six clades of southern African bats from three families (Rhinolophidae, Cistugidae, and Vespertilionidae) having different crown ages (Pleistocene to Miocene) and biome affiliations (temperate to arid). We estimated mtDNA relaxed clock dates of key divergence events across the six clades in relation both to biogeographical features and patterns of phenotypic variation in crania, bacula and echolocation calls. In horseshoe bats (Rhinolophidae), both the western and eastern "arms" of the Escarpment have facilitated dispersals from the Afrotropics into southern Africa. Pleistocene and pre‐Pleistocene "species pumps" and temperate refugia explained observed patterns of speciation, intraspecific divergence and, in two cases, mtDNA introgression. The Maloti‐Drakensberg is a center of micro‐endemism for bats, housing three newly described or undescribed species. Vicariance across biogeographic barriers gave rise to 29 micro‐endemic species and intraspecific lineages whose distributions were congruent with those identified in other phytogeographic and zoogeographic studies. Although Köppen–Geiger climate models predict a widespread replacement of current temperate ecosystems in southern Africa by tropical or arid ecosystems by 2070–2100, future climate Maxent models for 13 bat species (all but one of those analyzed above) showed minimal range changes in temperate species from the eastern Escarpment by 2070, possibly due to the buffering effect of mountains to climate change. Morphometric studies of 3D micro CT‐scanned images can provide insights into the evolution of the brain and sensory structures but such data are still scarce for the most diverse mammalian order of rodents. From reviewed and new data, we tested for convergence to extreme aridity and high elevation in the sensory and brain morphology of rodents, from morphometric data from micro‐CT X‐ray scans of 174 crania of 16 species of three distantly related African murid (soft‐furred mice, Praomyini, laminate‐toothed rats, Otomyini, and gerbils, Gerbillinae) clades and one North American cricetid (deer mice and white‐footed mice, Peromyscus) clade. Recent studies demonstrated convergent evolution acting on the oval window area of the cochlea (enlarged in extremely arid‐adapted species of Otomyini and Gerbillinae) and on endocranial volume (reduced in high elevation taxa of Otomyini and Peromyscus). However, contrary to our predictions, we did not find evidence of convergence in brain structure to aridity, or in the olfactory/respiratory system (turbinate bones) to high elevation. Brain structure differed, particularly in the petrosal lobules of the cerebellum and the olfactory bulbs, between Otomyini and Gerbillinae, with extreme arid‐adapted species in each clade being highly divergent (not convergent) from other species in the same clade. We observed greater "packing" of the maxillary turbinate bones, which have important respiratory functions, in Peromyscus mice from high and low elevations compared to the high‐elevation African Praomyini, but more complex patterns within Peromyscus, probably related to trade‐offs in respiratory physiology and heat exchange in the nasal epithelium associated with high‐elevation adaptation. This article shares contributions from a moderated e-forum in 2007 that explored the transformative potential of arts in learning and social change. It draws on examples of poetry, creative writing, and experiences of innovative practice shared through these conversations by adult educators in contexts as diverse as Africa, Asia, Europe, North America and Australia. The paper provides a conceptual frame to explore tensions in transformative learning between the mytho-poetic and the critical-rational, and between the individual and the collective. Using this frame, it connects the experiences shared by the e-forum participants to the literature. The paper reflects on how educators have used artistic and creative expression in their work and discusses how they have navigated the tensions presented in the earlier conceptual frame. It concludes by identifying four conditions that seem critical if arts and creativity are to play a role in transformative learning: authenticity, resonance, reflection, and freedom. The African rodent genus Mastomys contains eight species, some of which are widely distributed pest species and others which have restricted distribution. Most species are recognized only on chromosomal or molecular genetic data. We aimed to clarify the systematic status, geographical distribution, and phylogenetic relationships of three Mastomys species occurring in the Okavango Basin and surrounding arid habitats in southwestern Africa, with a focus on the poorly known and questionably valid taxon, Mastomys shortridgei. We described three genetically, morphologically, and ecologically distinct species of Mastomys and documented their respective karyotypes: Mastomys coucha (2n = 36, aFN = 56); Mastomys natalensis (2n = 32, aFN = 54); and M. shortridgei (2n = 36, aFN = 46). The chromosomal differences between M. coucha and M. shortridgei are probably due to pericentric inversions. The time to the most recent common ancestor of all M. coucha and M. shortridgei was estimated at 0.64 (0.30–1.22) Mya. The three species differed significantly from each other in 11 cranial measurements; a discriminant function allowed us to distinguish co‐occurring M. natalensis from M. shortridgei with 95% accuracy. We propose a model to explain the recent peripatric speciation of M. shortridgei from M. coucha based on drainage evolution in south‐central Africa since the Pleistocene. The conservation status of M. shortridgei needs to be re‐evaluated because of its low population densities, restrictive habitat preference, declining habitat quality, and historical and predicted future declines in area of occupancy. Temporal changes in body size have been documented in a number of vertebrate species, with different contested drivers being suggested to explain these changes. Among these are climate warming, resource availability, competition, predation risk, human population density, island effects and others. Both life history traits (intrinsic factors such as lifespan and reproductive rate) and habitat (extrinsic factors such as vegetation type, latitude and elevation) are expected to mediate the existence of a significant temporal response of body size to climate warming but neither have been widely investigated. Using examples of rodents, we predicted that both life history traits and habitat might explain the probability of temporal response using two tests of this hypothesis. Firstly, taking advantage of new data from museum collections spanning the last 106 years, we investigated geographical and temporal variation in cranial size (a proxy for body size) in six African rodent species of two murid subfamilies (Murinae and Gerbillinae) of varying life history, degree of commensality, range size, and habitat. Two species, the commensal Mastomys natalensis, and the non-commensal Otomys unisulcatus showed significant temporal changes in body size, with the former increasing and the latter decreasing, in relation with climate warming. Commensalism could explain the increase in size with time due to steadily increasing food availability through increased agricultural production. Apart from this, we found no general life history or habitat predictors of a temporal response in African rodents. Secondly, in order to further test this hypothesis, we incorporated our data into a meta-analysis based on published literature on temporal responses in rodents, resulting in a combined dataset for 50 species from seven families worldwide; among these, 29 species showed no significant change, eight showed a significant increase in size, and 13 showed a decline in size. Using a binomial logistic regression model for these metadata, we found that none of our chosen life history or habitat predictors could significantly explain the probability of a temporal response to climate warming, reinforcing our conclusion based on the more detailed data from the six African species. We respond to recent criticisms of supposed "taxonomic anarchy" which is said to hamper conservation efforts. Using examples from African small mammals, we document recent increases of 13% (rodents) and 18% (bats) over the past three decades in the number of recognized species of Afro-Malagasy rodents and bats. By reference to a number of case studies involving Afro-Malagasy taxa (predominantly from montane habitats), and a suggested four-criterion approach to delimiting species accurately, we show that these increases are a genuine reflection of speciation in cryptic species complexes. Moreover, we show that some of these cryptic species are subject to increased extinction risks due to small population size and anthropogenic changes (habitat degradation and climate change). These changes were captured accurately in a recent Mammal Red List of South Africa, Lesotho and Swaziland, indicating that taxonomists and conservationists can work together to assess the Red List status of cryptic species based on robust taxonomic revisions. Human-dominated landscapes comprise the bulk of the world’s terrestrial surface and Africa is predicted to experience the largest relative increase over the next century. A multi-scale approach is required to identify processes that maintain diversity in these landscapes. Here we identify scales at which animal diversity responds by partitioning regional diversity in a rural African agro-ecosystem between one temporal and four spatial scales. Human land use practices are the main driver of diversity in all seven animal assemblages considered, with medium sized mammals and birds most affected. Even the least affected taxa, bats and non-volant small mammals (rodents), responded with increased abundance in settlements and agricultural sites respectively. Regional turnover was important to invertebrate taxa and their response to human land use was intermediate between that of the vertebrate extremes. Local scale (< 300 m) heterogeneity was the next most important level for all taxa, highlighting the importance of fine scale processes for the maintenance of biodiversity. Identifying the triggers of these changes within the context of functional landscapes would provide the context for the long-term sustainability of these rapidly changing landscapes. Our extension of the phylogenetic study of Taylor et al. (2009) on a larger, more geographically representative sample confirmed their finding of genetically distinct sympatric lineages of bats currently referred to as Chaerephon pumilus sensu lato (s.l.) (family Molossidae) in southeastern Africa. Chaerephon pumilus s.l. comprised two cytochrome b lineages separated by a mean genetic distance of 0.7% (0.1-1.4%), consistent with intraspecific variability. The C. pumilus s.l. clade was paraphyletic, containing a nested C. leucogaster (Madagascar) clade. As well as the expected four mitochondrial control region lineages, we identified a new strongly-supported clade from the Durban area. Indices of diversity and neutrality, combined with a ragged multimodal mismatch distribution, are inconsistent with demographic expansion of a single C. pumilus s.l. population in southeastern Africa, and suggest that the control region lineages are stable units at demographic equilibrium. Dating analyses suggest that these lineages were established during the late Pleistocene, between 60 000 and 13 000 years ago. We found no evidence to support our hypothesis that the sympatric genetic lineages of C. pumilus s.l. are associated with distinct sonotypes, as discriminant function analysis based on four echolocation parameters could not discriminate between the four clades. As part of a three-year study to develop ecologically-based rodent management (EBRM) in southern Africa, a capture-mark-recapture study was carried out in Tanzania, Namibia and Swaziland to establish the demographic patterns and population dynamics of rodents. Two study grids were established in each country. In Tanzania, ten species of rodents and one shrew (Crocidura sp.) were identified in the study area. The rodent species consisted of Mastomys natalensis, Aethomys chrysophilus, Arvicanthis neumanni, Gerbilliscus vicina, Acomys spinosissimus, Lemniscomys griselda, Lemniscomys zebra, Rattus rattus, Graphiurus sp. and Mus minutoides. Mastomys natalensis was dominant and contributed more than 70% of the captures. In Namibia, five species were captured, namely Mastomys natalensis, Gerbilliscus leucogaster, Saccostomus campestris, Mus minutoides and Steatomys pratensis. Mnstomys natalensis contributed about 50% of the captures. In Swaziland, only M. natalensis was captured in the study grids. There was a clear pattern in the population dynamics, with breeding confined to the wet seasons in the three countries. Mastomys natalensis was the dominant pest species, for which EBRM should focus on. The highest population density of M. nutalensis occurred during and after the rains, which coincided with the most susceptible phenological stage of crops. The breeding seasonality and density fluctuations observed in the three countries conform with observations made elsewhere in Africa, which support the hypothesis that rainfall events promote primary productivity on which murid rodents depend. Development of EBRM in these countries will be determined by the local conditions and how they influence the demographic processes of the rodent populations. EBRM should make use of the available ecological knowledge of the local rodent pest species and the focus should be on (ecological) management practices applicable at the community level including community based intensive trapping, field hygiene, removing cover and sources of food for rodents. The article presents a study on the molecular phylogeny for the molossidae, known as Chiroptera from Africa and the Malagasy region. The study presents the phylogenetic information based on nuclear Rag2 and mitochondrial cytochrome b sequence data for six genera of molossidae. The genera includes Chaerephon, Mops, and Mormopterus. The study does not upheld the monophyly of the genus Tadarida, one of the six molossidae genera of molossidae. It also maintains Sauromys, another genera, as a monotypic genus.

Recent years have seen the development of molecular-based methodologies to investigate hybridization and its impact on the evolutionary process. However, morphological characterization of hybrid zones has only scantily been considered, especially in zootaxa. Thus, the level of congruence between molecular and morphological characters when attempting to detect hybrids remains a poorly tackled area. The genets (genus Genetta) provide an ideal case study for further investigation of the respective contribution of morphology and DNA in hybrid zone characterization because (1) their morphology has recently been exhaustively explored and (2) the existence of hybrid zones in southern Africa was proposed in the literature. We assessed levels of hybridization among the southern African genets, and questioned the role of ecological factors on the hybridization patterns detected. We used an integrative approach involving nine discrete morphological characters and a diagnostic discriminant function, geometric morphometrics and sequences of cytochrome b including collection specimens. The combination of independent materials allowed us to accurately reassess the level of hybridization in southern African genets, and revealed cryptic, interspecific gene flows. Morphology unambiguously detected a low number of G. maculata × G. tigrina hybrids and rejected the hypothesis of a large intergradation zone in KwaZulu-Natal, thus supporting the species status of the two genets. Cytochrome b analyses revealed: (1) cryptic, massive hybridization between G. tigrina and the sympatric G. felina, and (2) a trace of reticulation (one sequence) between G. tigrina and the allopatric G. genetta. The type specimen of G. mossambica Matschie, 1902 is considered to be a morphological hybrid between G. maculata and G. angolensis. Remarkably, the morphological approaches (discrete characters and morphometrics) proved complementary to conclusions derived from cytochrome b sequences. Whilst morphometrics was generally unable to accurately identify all putative hybrids, this approach revealed diagnostic cranial shape differences between recognized species as well as the cryptic G. ‘letabae’ (included in the super-species G. maculata). Morphometrics also confirmed the diagnostic value and age dependency of discrete characters. Our integrative approach appeared necessary to the detection of cryptic hybridizations and to the comprehensive characterization of hybrid zones. The recurrent detection of hybrids exhibiting tigrina-like coat patterns may suggest (1) asymmetric hybridization of G. tigrina males to females of other species and (2) positive selection for tigrina-like phenotype in South African habitats, but these hypotheses will have to be further tested using other sources of evidence. Despite the precise mosaic of hybrid zones identified in southern African genets, the environmental factors that shape patterns of distribution of hybrids remain unclear. Nevertheless, in the light of our range reassessment, it appears that seasonality of precipitation and periods of annual frost may play stringent roles in the distribution of genets. Taylor, P. J., Denys, C. & Mukerjee, M. (2004). Phylogeny of the African murid tribe Otomyini (Rodentia), based on morphological and allozyme evidence. — Zoologica Scripta, 33, 389 – 402. Based on a cladistic analysis of 45 morphological (craniodental) and 46 binary allozyme characters, previous systematic treatments of the African murid tribe, Otomyini (laminate-toothed rats), are reviewed. Cladistic analysis of the craniodental data, involving eight outgroup taxa, confirmed the monophyly of the Otomyini, and suggested Pelomys to represent the sister genus of the Otomyini. Craniodental synapomorphies provided strong support for certain basal relationships among Otomyini rodents, reinforcing available palaeontological evidence. However, poor statistical (Bremer decay index) support was obtained for terminal relationships. The data presented revealed a ‘mesic clade’ of southern and eastern African species, with Otomys sloggetti basal to this group. The arid-adapted, southern Africa-endemic species, Parotomys littledalei, P. brantsii and O. unisulcatus, were all placed basal to the ‘mesic clade’, but did not form a separate ‘arid clade’, as suggested by earlier biochemical studies. Two allozyme synapomorphies supported the existence of the ‘mesic clade’, separate from arid-adapted southern African species. A strict cladistic interpretation of the present data did not support the existence of two genera in the tribe, and the two species of Parotomys (whistling rats) should be transferred to Otomys. At the species level, specific identity of O. lacustris and O. barbouri, distinct from O. anchietae, was supported by several autapomorphies, and O. tropicalis burtoni was shown to be included in O. angoniensis rather than O. tropicalis, extending the range of the former species into West Africa. The Okavango River Basin is a hotspot of bat diversity that requires urgent and adequate protection. To advise future conservation strategies, we investigated the relative importance of a range of potential environmental drivers of bat species richness and functional community composition in the Okavango River Basin. During annual canoe transects along the major rivers, originating in the central Angolan highlands, we recorded more than 25,000 bat echolocation calls from 2015 to 2018. We corrected for possible biases in sampling design and effort. Firstly, we conducted rarefaction analyses of each survey year and sampling appeared to be complete, apart from 2016. Secondly, we used total activity as a measure of sample effort in mixed models of species richness. Species richness was highest in the Angola Miombo Woodlands and at lower elevations, with higher minimum temperatures. In total, we identified 31 individual bat species. We show that even when acoustic surveys are conducted in remote areas and over multiple years, it is possible to correct for biases and obtain representative richness estimates. Changes in habitat heterogeneity will have detrimental effects on the high richness reported here and human land-use change, specifically agriculture, must be mediated in a system such as the Angolan Miombo Woodland. The iconic African baobab tree (Adansonia digitata) has "chiropterophilous" flowers that are adapted for pollination by fruit bats. Although bat pollination of baobabs has been documented in east and west Africa, it has not been confirmed in southern Africa where it has been suggested that hawk moths (Nephele comma) may also be involved in baobab pollination. We used a citizen science approach to monitor baobab tree and flower visitors from dusk till midnight at 23 individual baobab trees over 27 nights during the flowering seasons (November–December) of 2016 and 2017 in northern South Africa and southern Zimbabwe (about 1650 visitors). Insect visitors frequently visited baobab flowers, including hawk moths, but, with one exception in southeastern Zimbabwe, no fruit bats visited flowers. Citizen science enabled us to substantiate preliminary conclusions about the relative importance of moth versus bat pollination of baobabs in southern Africa, with important implications for resource management. Three more isolates of Lagos bat virus were recently recovered from fruit bats in South Africa after an apparent absence of this virus for 13 years. Abstract: Gerbilliscus has recently been proposed as an endemic African rodent genus distinct from the Asian Tatera. A molecular phylogeny of the genus, including nine species from southern, western and eastern Africa, is presented here based on the analysis of the cytochrome b and 16S mitochondrial genes. With an adequate taxonomic sampling over a wide geographic range, we here provide a clear picture of the phylogenetic relationships between species and species groups in this genus. Three distinct clades were resolved, corresponding to major geographical subdivisions: an eastern clade that possibly diverged first, then a southern and a western clades which appeared later. We suggest two possible hypotheses concerning the dispersal of the genus across Africa, considering also the patterns of karyotypic variation. Finally, we discuss the taxonomic status of G. gambianus and the relationships between Gerbillurus and Gerbilliscus, as previous studies have suggested that the former should be included in the latter. Our data seem to support the synonymy of the two taxa and suggest that Gerbillurus and Gerbilliscus lineages diverged from a common ancestor appeared in eastern Africa. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The global macadamia industry is growing rapidly, and the world's biggest macadamia nut producer, South Africa, is continuously expanding its production. Insect pest mitigation and research are mainly focused on the damage caused by heteropteran pest species, whereas the damage associated with lepidopteran tortricid moths in South African macadamia orchards is understudied. Here we explore the potential biocontrol of tortricid moths by natural predators through full exclosure of bats and birds, daytime only exclosure (birds), night exclosure (bats and possibly nocturnal birds), and control treatments. The exclusion experiment showed that bats and birds are effective natural predators, which can reduce tortricid moth damage by more than 35%. Impacts of biocontrol are higher at natural orchard edges next to natural or semi-natural vegetation, compared to human-modified edges (12.4% damage decrease in 2017, 10.6% in 2018). At the full exclosure, there was no difference in damage between natural orchard edges and human-modified edges, in both years of our study (56.5% vs. 56.6% in 2017, 19% vs. 18.5% in 2018). We recommend increased preservation efforts of more heterogeneity with semi-natural vegetation in agricultural landscapes to ensure the conservation of biocontrol services, as their loss can be expected to result in significant negative impact on macadamia production. This biological pest control can be used as part of integrated pest management to reduce the reliance on chemical pesticides, so decreasing sustainability challenges. The African continent was subjected to periodic climatic shifts during the Pliocene and Pleistocene. These habitat changes greatly affected the evolutionary processes and tempo of diversification in numerous, widely distributed mammals. The Otomyini (Family Muridae) comprises three African rodent genera, Parotomys, Otomys and Myotomys, characterized by unique laminated-shaped molars. Species within this tribe generally prefer open-habitat and show low dispersal capabilities, with previous studies suggesting that their diversification was closely associated with climatic oscillations over the last four million years. Our phylogenetic reconstructions, based on three mitochondrial (mtDNA) genes (Cytb , COI and 12S) and four nuclear introns (EF, SPTBN, MGF and THY), identified eight major genetic clades that are distributed across southern, eastern and western Africa. Our data permit the re-examination of the taxonomic status of the three genera as well as the previously proposed mesic-arid dichotomy of the 10 South African species. Moreover, multiple mtDNA species delimitation methods incorporating 168 specimens estimated the number of Otomyini species to be substantially higher than the ∼ 30 recognized, suggesting that the current taxonomy will necessitate an integrative approach to delimit extant species diversity within the Otomyini. The data suggests that the origin of the tribe can be dated back to ∼ 5.7 million years ago (Ma) in southern Africa. The distribution and phylogenetic associations among the eight major otomyine evolutionary lineages can best be explained by several waves of northward colonization from southern Africa, complemented by independent reversed dispersals from eastern back to southern Africa at different time periods. There is strong support for the hypothesis that the radiation, dispersion, and diversification of the otomyine rodents is closely linked to recent Plio-Pleistocene climatic oscillations. Abstract: African endemic pygmy mice (Genus Mus; sub-genus Nannomys) have considerable economic and public health significance, and some species exhibit novel sex determination systems, making accurate knowledge of their phylogenetics and distribution limits important. This phylogenetic study was based on the mitochondrial control region and cytochrome b gene, for which a substantial body of published data was available. Study specimens were sourced from eight previously unsampled or poorly sampled countries, and include samples morphologically identified as Mus bufo, M. indutus, M. callewaerti, M. triton and M. neavei. These analyses increase the known genetic diversity of Nannomys from 65 to 102 haplotypes; at least 5 unassigned haplotypes are distinguished by potentially species-level cytochrome b genetic distances. The monophyly of Nannomys is supported. Mus musculoides, M. callewaerti, M. indutus, M. bufo, M. haussa, M. mattheyi, M. baoulei and M. sorella are supported as discrete species. The range of M. indutus is extended to include Botswana. M. setulosus and M. minutoides appear to be species complexes. A south and east African M. minutoides clade was defined and includes 8 new haplotypes out of 15. M. setulosus sensu lato includes M. setulosus sensu stricto and a strongly-supported M. bufo clade. Sub-Saharan Africa is under-represented in global biodiversity datasets, particularly regarding the impact of land use on species' population abundances. Drawing on recent advances in expert elicitation to ensure data consistency, 200 experts were convened using a modified-Delphi process to estimate 'intactness scores': the remaining proportion of an 'intact' reference population of a species group in a particular land use, on a scale from 0 (no remaining individuals) to 1 (same abundance as the reference) and, in rare cases, to 2 (populations that thrive in human-modified landscapes). The resulting bii4africa dataset contains intactness scores representing terrestrial vertebrates (tetrapods: ±5,400 amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals) and vascular plants (±45,000 forbs, graminoids, trees, shrubs) in sub-Saharan Africa across the region's major land uses (urban, cropland, rangeland, plantation, protected, etc.) and intensities (e.g., large-scale vs smallholder cropland). Hearing capabilities in desert rodents such as gerbils and heteromyids have been inferred from both anatomical and ecological aspects and tested with experiments and theoretical models. However, very few studies have focused on other desert-adapted species. In this study, a refined three-dimensional morphometric approach was used on three African rodent tribes (Otomyini, Taterillini and Gerbillini) to describe the cochlear and tympanic bullar morphology, and to explore the role of phylogeny, allometry and ecology to better understand the underlying mechanism of any observed trends of hypertrophy in the bulla and associated changes in the cochlea. As a result, desert-adapted species could be distinguished from mesic and semi-arid taxa by the gross cochlear dimensions, particularly the oval window, which is larger in desert species. Bullar and cochlear modifications between species could be explained by environment (bulla and oval window), phylogeny (cochlear curvature gradient) and/or allometry (cochlear relative length, oval window and bulla) with some exceptions. Based on their ear anatomy, we predict that Desmodillus auricularis and Parotomys brantsii should be sensitive to low-frequency sounds, with D. auricularis sensitive to high-frequency sounds, too. This study concludes that in both arid and semi-arid adapted laminate-toothed rats and gerbils there is bulla and associated cochlea hypertrophy, particularly in true desert species. Gigantism and dwarfism evolve in vertebrates restricted to islands. We describe four new species in the Rhinolophus hildebrandtii species-complex of horseshoe bats, whose evolution has entailed adaptive shifts in body size. We postulate that vicissitudes of palaeoenvironments resulted in gigantism and dwarfism in habitat islands fragmented across eastern and southern Africa. Mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequences recovered two clades of R. hildebrandtii senso lato which are paraphyletic with respect to a third lineage (R. eloquens). Lineages differ by 7.7 to 9.0% in cytochrome b sequences. Clade 1 includes R. hildebrandtii sensu stricto from the east African highlands and three additional vicariants that speciated across an Afromontane archipelago through the Plio-Pleistocene, extending from the Kenyan Highlands through the Eastern Arc, northern Mozambique and the Zambezi Escarpment to the eastern Great Escarpment of South Africa. Clade 2 comprises one species confined to lowland savanna habitats (Mozambique and Zimbabwe). A third clade comprises R. eloquens from East Africa. Speciation within Clade 1 is associated with fixed differences in echolocation call frequency, and cranial shape and size in populations isolated since the late Pliocene (ca 3.74 Mya). Relative to the intermediate-sized savanna population (Clade 2), these island-populations within Clade 1 are characterised by either gigantism (South African eastern Great Escarpment and Mts Mabu and Inago in Mozambique) or dwarfism (Lutope-Ngolangola Gorge, Zimbabwe and Soutpansberg Mountains, South Africa). Sympatry between divergent clades (Clade 1 and Clade 2) at Lutope-Ngolangola Gorge (NW Zimbabwe) is attributed to recent range expansions. We propose an "Allometric Speciation Hypothesis", which attributes the evolution of this species complex of bats to divergence in constant frequency (CF) sonar calls. The origin of species-specific peak frequencies (overall range = 32 to 46 kHz) represents the allometric effect of adaptive divergence in skull size, represented in the evolution of gigantism and dwarfism in habitat islands.
