In this paper, an attempt was made to locate the role of internationalisation in African Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). It is argued that comprehensive international, intercultural, and global dimensions in the affairs of African tertiary institutions provide for a more nuanced and diversified higher education landscape. Through a desk study approach, dwelling mainly on existing literature, the paper examines the issues of internationalisation from the perspectives of diversity and inclusion, as well as the roles of the relevant key players within those institutions to practically deliver internationalisation strategies that will put the institution on a global pedestal while remaining locally and regionally relevant. More importantly, strategies for achieving comprehensive internationalisation are discussed drawing inferences from literature and documentary sources. The interrogation of these sources in relation to the expectations of the current and future HEIs to remain socially relevant and sustainable is carried out. HEIs in Africa must contribute to socio-economic change and engage with their quad-helix and eco-system partners to ensure that high end skills training, knowledge production, entrepreneurship and innovation are accelerated. In so doing, African HEIs must embrace diversity in its fullness including welcoming differences in gender, race, culture, nationality and providing platforms of engagement that allow for inclusion, and breaking silos to allow for a nuanced agenda of internationalisation.

The recent surge in global knowledge production has attracted focus on postdoctoral research fellowship in developed countries, leaving this group of African academics in the shadows. This article reported the results of a systematic review of research of postdoctoral research fellowship. The database of this review comprised 44 mixed sources located via a systematic method. The social justice theory was adopted to analyse and interpret the findings. The analysis of data relied on the use of descriptive statistics and graphing techniques. The review found literature published predominantly in European and Anglo-American societies, affirming the emerging status of the African society in the contribution to global knowledge production. Recommendations were made for funding research activities, curbing brain drain and increasing research output in Africa. The study highlighted milestones of progress along topics, methodologies and "blind spots" for future research practice and apprises evidence based decision making by policy makers. Fermented foods are an integral part of the diet for many communities in Africa. The fermentation of maize is characterized by an improved nutrient content/bioavailability and the presence of bioactive compounds which are largely attributed to the activity of the microbial population mainly lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and yeasts. The role of LAB in maize and other cereal fermentations has been extensively studied. However, limited literature is available on the role of yeasts in maize fermentations and resultant nutritional and health promoting properties. This review explores the contribution of yeasts to the nutritional and health properties of fermented maize and other cereal products. Additionally, the proliferation and growth characteristics of dominant yeasts and their derived metabolites are discussed. It is particularly important to comprehend the processes and type of yeasts involved in maize fermentation as an essential step in maize product development. This will facilitate the development of yeast-based starter culture, improve maize fermentation process and provide better understanding of associated nutrition and bioactive properties. This paper contends that the unprecedented migration of Zimbabwean teachers into South Africa has transformed the well-being of their families in Zimbabwe positively. In some cases, poverty at household level has even been alleviated as a result of remittances sent to Zimbabwean households of the Zimbabwean teachers in South Africa. On the strength of human development impacts such as increased household income and consumption, savings and asset accumulation, improved access to health and nutrition and access to better education identified in this research, it is possible to hypothesize that professional Zimbabwean migrant teachers in South Africa who maintain ties with their home country do indeed make a positive contribution to their own families' and households' human development needs back home in Zimbabwe. The paper explores the sophisticated and subtle nature of xenophobic chauvinism, xenophobic scapegoating and exclusion as represented in Zimbabwean literature, particularly post-independent short stories. The paper argues that the artists portray xenophobia as an insidious condition of all post independent states exacerbated by weak political, economic and social service delivery systems that encourage contentious emigration or intra ethnic tensions and therefore not a preserve of Rwanda or South Africa. It contends that while the African political leadership publicly exhort solidarity and Pan African vision, their economic and social policies, as presented in the chosen short stories, do not create the conditions for equality among transnational citizens. The paper further notes that the 21st century presents knotty and contested problems of citizenship and identities. Identities have become fluid, mixing and overlapping. They are constantly being negotiated and renegotiated so that historical, ethnic and religious determinism and essentialisms no longer provide clear-cut definitions of who an African is, who belongs to what nationality. The research argues that the greatest threat to the much-talked about Pan- Africanism (which could have benefited from the mixing and fluidity) is xenophobic chauvinism, a chauvinism that excludes members of a different group as the 'Other' to be subordinated to the whimsical and arbitrary definitions of the putative in-group. It is contended here that the terms 'foreigner' or 'stranger' prevalent in the language of the short stories are deliberately used as a strategy for political, economic and atavistic entitlements. Thus the vision of Pan-Africanism will founder on the rocks of the above issues unless feisty efforts are made to turn difference into a positive building block. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In global educational context, adequate application of institutional-wide risk awareness (IRA) is recognised as crucial in efforts to achieve targets set in both mission and vision of respective Universities. But the situation in many African is that fewer Universities are pursuing the IRA. This study identifies one African University where, contrary to global trends in institutional-wide risk awareness is under-elevated in IRA. Using qualitative and quantitative methods, and guided by the Harvey & Green, Stoney, Higher Education Funding Council for England-HECFE and King report, the study investigated the risk awareness and the variables that impact on University-wide risk awareness. The data collection methods included interviews, questionnaire and document analysis. Significant conclusions based on the relationships between University-wide risk awareness and the risk variables emerged. The main conclusions of the study are (1) risk awareness does correlate with institutional preparedness. The two main forms of preparedness associated with risk awareness are, firstly, understanding and documentation of risk policies and practices (2) risk treatment (action) plan was found to be an important factor to consider in creating risk awareness. Public Health Genomics (PHG) is a relatively new field. The wide application of genomic technologies played a pivotal role in elucidating the full genomic sequence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. This breakthrough proved to be the starting point in the manufacture of diagnostic kits and the subsequent making of vaccines. Beyond the COVID-19 pandemic, many African countries can take advantage of the various investments in genomic technologies to introduce and intensify the use of genomics for public health gain. Public Health Genomics effectively monitors, prevents, and manages non-communicable and infectious diseases. However, there are several challenges to implementing PHG in Africa. In this perspective article, we discuss the utilization of PHG during the COVID-19 pandemic, the lessons learned from using PHG to manage and contain the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as potential challenges Africa may face when putting PHG into practice compared to challenges of other regions.
