High-silica zeolites, some of the most important and widely used catalysts in industry, have potential for application across a wide range of traditional and emerging technologies. The many structural topologies of zeolites have a variety of potential uses, so a strong drive to create new zeolites exists. Here, we present a protocol, the assembly-disassembly-organization-reassembly (ADOR) process, for a relatively new method of preparing these important solids. It allows the synthesis of new high-silica zeolites (Si/Al >1,000), whose synthesis is considered infeasible with traditional (solvothermal) methods, offering new topologies that may find novel applications. We show how to identify the optimal conditions (e.g., duration of reaction, temperature, acidity) for ADOR, which is a complex process with different possible outcomes. Following the protocol will allow researchers to identify the different products that are possible from a reaction without recourse to repetitive and time-consuming trial and error. In developing the protocol, germanium-containing UTL zeolites were subjected to hydrolysis conditions using both water and hydrochloric acid as media, which provides an understanding of the effects of temperature and pH on the disassembly (D) and organization (O) steps of the process that define the potential products. Samples were taken from the ongoing reaction periodically over a minimum of 8 h, and each sample was analyzed using powder X-ray diffraction to yield a time course for the reaction at each set of conditions; selected samples were analyzed using transmission electron microscopy and solid-state NMR spectroscopy.

Zeolites are an important class of materials that have wide ranging applications such as heterogeneous catalysts and adsorbents which are dependent on their framework topology. For new applications or improvements to existing ones, new zeolites with novel pore systems are desirable. We demonstrate a method for the synthesis of novel zeolites using the ADOR route. ADOR is an acronym for Assembly, Disassembly, Organization and Reassembly. This synthetic route takes advantage of the assembly of a relatively poorly stable that which can be selectively disassembled into a layered material. The resulting layered intermediate can then be organized in different manners by careful chemical manipulation and then reassembled into zeolites with new topologies. By carefully controlling the organization step of the synthetic pathway, new zeolites with never before seen topologies are capable of being synthesized. The structures of these new zeolites are confirmed using powder X-ray diffraction and further characterized by nitrogen adsorption and scanning electron microscopy. This new synthetic pathway for zeolites demonstrates its capability to produce novel frameworks that have never been prepared by traditional zeolite synthesis techniques.

The properties of zeolites, and thus their suitability for different applications, are intimately connected with their structures. Synthesizing specific architectures is therefore important, but has remained challenging. Here we report a top-down strategy that involves the disassembly of a parent zeolite, UTL, and its reassembly into two zeolites with targeted topologies, IPC-2 and IPC-4. The three zeolites are closely related as they adopt the same layered structure, and they differ only in how the layers are connected. Choosing different linkers gives rise to different pore sizes, enabling the synthesis of materials with predetermined pore architectures. The structures of the resulting zeolites were characterized by interpreting the X-ray powder-diffraction patterns through models using computational methods; IPC-2 exhibits orthogonal 12- and ten-ring channels, and IPC-4 is a more complex zeolite that comprises orthogonal ten- and eight-ring channels. We describe how this method enables the preparation of functional materials and discuss its potential for targeting other new zeolites.

Nitric oxide (NO) is important for the regulation of a number of diverse biological processes, including vascular tone, neurotransmission, inflammatory cell responsiveness, defence against invading pathogens and wound healing. Transition metal exchanged zeolites are nanoporous materials with high-capacity storage properties for gases such as NO. The NO stores are liberated upon contact with aqueous environments, thereby making them ideal candidates for use in biological and clinical settings. Here, we demonstrate the NO release capacity and powerful bactericidal properties of a novel NO-storing Zn(2+)-exchanged zeolite material at a 50 wt.% composition in a polytetrafluoroethylene polymer. Further to our published data showing the anti-thrombotic effects of a similar NO-loaded zeolite, this study demonstrates the anti-bacterial properties of NO-releasing zeolites against clinically relevant strains of bacteria, namely Gram-negative Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Gram-positive methicillin-sensitive and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Clostridium difficile. Microstructural analysis of the early stage crystal growth of zeolite A in hydrothermal synthetic conditions revealed a revised crystal growth route from surface to core in the presence of the biopolymer chitosan. The mechanism of this extraordinary crystal growth route is discussed. In the first stage, the precursor and biopolymer aggregated into amorphous spherical particles. Crystallization occurred on the surface of these spheres, forming the typical cubic morphology associated with zeolite A with a very thin crystalline cubic shell and an amorphous core. With a surface-to-core extension of crystallization, sodalite nanoplates were crystallized within the amorphous cores of these zeolite A cubes, most likely due to an increase of pressure. These sodalite nanoplates increased in size, breaking the cubic shells of zeolite A in the process, leading to the phase transformation from zeolite A to sodalite via an Ostwald ripening process. Characterization of specimens was performed using scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy, supported by other techniques including X-ray diffraction, solid-state NMR, and N(2) adsorption/desorption.

Transition metal-exchanged zeolite-A adsorbs and stores nitric oxide in relatively high capacity (up to 1 mmol of NO/g of zeolite). The stored NO is released on contact with an aqueous environment under biologically relevant conditions of temperature and pH. The release of the NO can be tuned by altering the chemical composition of the zeolite, by controlling the amount of water contacting the zeolite, and by blending the zeolite with different polymers. The high capacity of zeolite for NO makes it extremely attractive for use in biological and medical applications, and our experiments indicate that the NO released from Co-exchanged zeolite-A inhibits platelet aggregation and adhesion of human platelets in vitro.

IPC-12 zeolite is the first member of the ADOR family produced by the structural transformation of UOV. The details of the UOV rearrangement were studied to determine the influence of the properties of the parent zeolite and treatment conditions on the outcome of IPC-12 formation. It was established that incomplete disassembly of UOV can be caused by insufficient lability of interlayer connectivity in the parent material possessing Si-enriched D4Rs or by inhibition of hydrolysis by diluted acid at high temperature. The impacts of specific interactions of the framework with anions on controllable breaking of interlayer connectivity and the conditions of the treatment at low pH (＜−1) on the characteristics of the produced IPC-12 were found to be negligible. The concentration of the acid significantly influences the extent and even the direction of UOV transformation. Layer disassembly is inhibited in 1–4 M acid solutions, and complete hydrolysis to a layered precursor can be achieved in 0.1 M solution, while application of 12 M solution led to direct formation of IPC-12. Layer reassembly followed using in situ XRD measurement with a synchrotron source was found to be a gradual process starting at 40 °C and completing at 200–220 °C. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The assembly-disassembly-organization-reassembly (ADOR) process has been used to disassemble a parent zeolite with the UOV structure type and then reassemble the resulting layers into a novel structure, IPC-12. The structure of the material has previously been predicted computationally and confirmed in our experiments using X-ray diffraction and atomic resolution STEM-HAADF electron microscopy. The disordered intermediate of the ADORable zeolite UTL has been structurally confirmed using the pair distribution function (PDF) technique. The intermediate, IPC-1P, is a disordered layered compound formed by the hydrolysis of UTL in 0.1 M hydrochloric acid solution. Its structure is unsolvable by traditional X-ray diffraction techniques. The PDF technique was first benchmarked against high-quality synchrotron Rietveld refinements of IPC-2 (OKO) and IPC-4 (PCR) – two end products of IPC-1P condensation that share very similar structural features. An IPC-1P starting model derived from density functional theory was used for the PDF refinement, which yielded a final fit of Rw = 18% and a geometrically reasonable structure. This confirms the layers do stay intact throughout the ADOR process and shows PDF is a viable technique for layered zeolite structure determination. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A novel methodology, called ADOR (assembly–disassembly–organisation–reassembly), for the synthesis of zeolites is reviewed here in detail. The ADOR mechanism stems from the fact that certain chemical weakness against a stimulus may be present in a zeolite framework, which can then be utilized for the preparation of new solids through successive manipulation of the material. In this review, we discuss the critical factors of germanosilicate zeolites required for application of the ADOR protocol and describe the mechanism of hydrolysis, organisation and condensation to form new zeolites starting from zeolite UTL. Zeolites are important materials whose utility in industry depends on the nature of their porous structure. Control over microporosity is therefore a vitally important target. Unfortunately, traditional methods for controlling porosity, in particular the use of organic structure-directing agents, are relatively coarse and provide almost no opportunity to tune the porosity as required. Here we show how zeolites with a continuously tuneable surface area and micropore volume over a wide range can be prepared. This means that a particular surface area or micropore volume can be precisely tuned. The range of porosity we can target covers the whole range of useful zeolite porosity: from small pores consisting of 8-rings all the way to extra-large pores consisting of 14-rings. The challenges associated with synthesizing porous materials mean that new classes of zeolites (zeotypes)-such as aluminosilicate zeolites and zeolite analogues-together with new methods of preparing known zeotypes, continue to be of great importance. Normally these materials are prepared hydrothermally with water as the solvent in a sealed autoclave under autogenous pressure. The reaction mixture usually includes an organic template or ‘structure-directing agent’ that guides the synthesis pathway towards particular structures. Here we report the preparation of aluminophosphate zeolite analogues by using ionic liquids and eutectic mixtures. An imidazolium-based ionic liquid acts as both solvent and template, leading to four zeotype frameworks under different experimental conditions. The structural characteristics of the materials can be traced back to the solvent chemistry used. Because of the vanishingly low vapour pressure of ionic liquids, synthesis takes place at ambient pressure, eliminating safety concerns associated with high hydrothermal pressures. The ionic liquid can also be recycled for further use. A choline chloride/urea eutectic mixture is also used in the preparation of a new zeotype framework. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Two aluminofluorophosphates have been synthesized using 1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane (cyclam) as a structure-directing agent (SDA). The two materials were synthesized hydrothermally and their structures solved by microcrystal diffraction using synchrotron radiation. In both cases, the SDA has been located crystallographically. The first material, [F, Cyclam]-AlPO-CHA, has the molecular formula Al6P6O24F2.C10N4H26 and has a framework structure related to the mineral chabazite, with the cyclam molecules occluded within chabazite-like cages (space group P–1, a=9.0993(4) A˚, b=9.2232(5) A˚, c=9.3929(4) A˚, α=77.881(2)o, β=87.205(1)o, γ=87.777(1)o, Z=1, wR(F2)=0.1354, R(F)=0.0487). The second material, [F, Cu-Cyclam]-AlPO-SAS, has the molecular formula Al8P8O32F2.[CuC10N4H24.2H2O] and has a framework structure closely related to STA-6 (SAS) zeolite structure type, although the usual tetragonal symmetry has been reduced to monoclinic by the presence of the fluoride ions (space group P21/n, a=10.3738(4) A˚, b=14.8060(5) A˚, c=13.4494(5) A˚, β=90.275(1)o, Z=2, wR(F2)=0.1484, R(F)=0.0524). The hydrothermal synthesis of a zeolite with properties suitable for use in the assembly-disassembly-organization-reassembly (ADOR) process was designed, and a zeolite called SAZ-1 was successfully prepared. This zeolite was then used as a parent in the ADOR process, and two new daughter zeolites, IPC-15 and IPC-16, were prepared. The X-ray powder diffraction patterns of the new zeolites match well with those predicted using computational methods. The great utility and importance of zeolites in fields as diverse as industrial catalysis and medicine has driven considerable interest in the ability to target new framework types with novel properties and applications. The recently introduced and unconventional assembly, disassembly, organization, reassembly (ADOR) method represents one exciting new approach to obtain solids with targeted structures by selectively disassembling preprepared hydrolytically unstable frameworks and then reassembling the resulting products to form materials with new topologies. However, the hydrolytic mechanisms underlying such a powerful synthetic method are not understood in detail, requiring further investigation of the kinetic behavior and the outcome of reactions under differing conditions. In this work, we report the optimized ADOR synthesis, and subsequent solid-state characterization, of 17O- and doubly 17O- and 29Si-enriched UTL-derived zeolites, by synthesis of 29Si-enriched starting Ge-UTL frameworks and incorporation of 17O from 17O-enriched water during hydrolysis. 17O and 29Si NMR experiments are able to demonstrate that the hydrolysis and rearrangement process occurs over a much longer time scale than seen by diffraction. The observation of unexpectedly high levels of 17O in the bulk zeolitic layers, rather than being confined only to the interlayer spacing, reveals a much more extensive hydrolytic rearrangement than previously thought.
