YOUTH culture , *IMMIGRANTS , *RACISM , *POETRY slams , *YOUTH - Abstract
Within the context of hyper surveillance and panic over young people's political and creative forms of participation, we draw on biographical interviews to explore how young people from socio-economically disadvantaged and migrant backgrounds of Sydney's Western suburbs participate in Slam Poetry scenes. Slam poetry is a global cultural activity, with a strong base in places like Western Sydney where young people from minority backgrounds collectively develop a shared language of resistance. Indeed, it is argued that neo-tribal leisure scenes are important sites for understanding how young people construct their identities as "pleasure citizens" in collectivist terms (Riley, S., Y. Morey, and C. Griffin. 2010. "The 'Pleasure Citizen' Analyzing Partying as a Form of Social and Political Participation." Young 18 (1): 33–54). We aim to build on this argument, considering how categories of ethnicity, class and gender are embodied by our informants within youthful forms of sociality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The 21st anniversary of Cool Places (Skelton, T., and G. Valentine, eds. 1998. Cool Places: Geographies of Youth Cultures. London: Routledge) provides an opportunity to reflect on the direction of travel in youth geographies and map out future journeys. Here, we argue that scholarship on youth geographies is increasingly dispersed across sub-disciplinary niches of Human Geography. A more conspicuous point of coalescence would be beneficial for the advancement of conceptual and theoretical understandings of youth geographies. It is suggested that the journal Children's Geographies, offers a meaningful place for the publication of further, dynamic and increased work on youth geographies. To illustrate the exigent research agendas of youth geographies, some exemplars of the ways in which the contemporary lives of young people are being transformed are highlighted. We conclude by asserting that it is an exciting time for researching youth geographies, to grapple with the complex and diverse contested meanings and lived experiences of youth across the Global North and South. Abstract This article seeks to portray the cultures of participation of young people in secondary education and residing in border regions in mainland Portugal. These regions are, in general, marked by economic, social and cultural inequalities which translate into fewer opportunities of educational supply, employment and spaces for participation. From a sociology of youth perspective, data from a questionnaire applied to 3968 young people in 38 municipalities is analysed with the aim of mapping youth participation and discussing proposals for other forms of participation to which they have less access. The results point to some differences between sexes and social class, revealing that they get involved more in sporting activities and less in activities of political and civic participation. We conclude that the contexts analysed here have a lesser diversity of supply of spaces for participation, which translates into a lower involvement of young people. This work points to the pertinence of equating participation models centred on young people and led by them. This work contributes to an analysis of the spectrum of youth participation in less studied contexts, such as rural and border regions.

In recent decades, social research on youth in Italy has explored a wide range of issues through different interpretative and methodological approaches. However, there are very few studies that seek to identify the keynote features of the juvenile condition. This article argues that collective identities and forms of identification among youth are shaped more and more frequently through the sharing of social practices, of the meanings connected to these practices, and of more comprehensive lifestyles. With reference to four main fields (sport, music, politics, religion) and focusing on youth cultures, it analyses the connections between behaviours, attitudes, values and representations of youth actively involved in each of these different fields. The aim is to identify transversal processes through which young people today elaborate and adopt social practices and cultural profiles, create new social forms, and develop innovative signification processes. BRAZILIAN films , *MOTION pictures , *MIDDLE class , *YOUTH , *YOUTH culture , *SOCIABILITY - Abstract
This text presents some recurring themes in the field of representations of youth in contemporary Brazilian cinema. They are focuses presented in a set of films of the last decade - here being evidenced by a prospective look based on the works The Best Things in the World (2010) and Desenrola (2011). The narrative biases of the films present diverse forms as the youngs make their lives feasible in a context of middle class and upper urban average. They present the pains and pleasures of an age group understood by adolescents, in which the correlation between the house (room) and the street (school) reaches the tone of the sociabilities of the said social group, mediated by cultural codes such as hobbies, slang, Music, clothing, pedagogies of love and post-mass media, especially through the WEB. The present investigation tries to relate some Colombian cinematographic pieces released between 2010 and 2019, with the purpose of interpreting said filmic bets around the youth in the Colombian present day, approaching concepts such as; youth cultures, by Rossana Reguillo; and, Juvenile Condition and Juvenicide, by José Manuel Valenzuela, around the field of education for peace, the peace agreement and the different popular and non-formal bets around the construction of communities and territories in conditions outside the violence product of the armed conflict. The objective of the work is "To understand the representations of young people in situations of Colombian armed conflict in three Colombian films, between 2010 and 2019, and their implications for the field of education for peace." The estimated period of time is fixed under the temporality with respect to the management, construction, signing and implementation of the peace agreement given by the national government and the FARC guerrillas in 2016. A methodology adapted from models of studies in art, specifically those of Erwin Panofsky and María Acaso. The results are presented referenced in communicative aspects found from each of the three selected pieces, the youth representations around them are interpreted, and finally, some orientations to the field of education for peace are proposed.

In this article we examine how the internet and other digital technologies are used by Portuguese Afro-descendant youth living in contexts of socio-economic deprivation. More specifically, based on a set of interviews held with rappers, we pursue a discussion on the significance of the concepts of digital inclusion and participation, arguing that young people’s online practices reflect not only distinct ways of digital participation but also cultural engagement. By studying black amateur rap, our main goal is to examine how disadvantaged young people use the internet and other digital technologies and how these apparatuses may be employed for cultural expression and identity construction. Our research shows, on the one hand, how crucial a strategic use of these devices can be for amateur cultural production, on the other hand, how these platforms contribute to build an enlarged circuit of ethicized cultural expression. Therefore, we argue that digital participation contributes to reverse the cultural devaluation experienced by these black communities, working as a mechanism of individual and cultural empowerment. Middling youth were centre stage in research on school-to-work transitions from the early-20th century up to and throughout the 1980s. Since then they have been overshadowed by sociological attention to the young unemployed/NEETs on the one side, and university students and graduates on the other. Simultaneously, economists have been crowding out sociologists in the study of education-to-work transitions, especially in the middle ground. However, this paper argues that this is not just a case of the sociological gaze missing the middle. It is argued that old middling labour market destinations have diminished in number, and the new middle remains elusive because the employment tends to be precarious. Thus today's middling groups of school-leavers must either try to move-up or face career-long threats of descent to the bottom. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Knowledge about the generation of Middle' East and North African youth has been constrained by the twin processes of intense visibilization and securitization since 9/11. The introduction to this special issue pushes research on youth beyond these processes to reveal the complex and creative ways in which young men and women have been negotiating gendered identities, spaces and power. What emerges from is a refocused appreciation of youth politics and participation, altered forms of resistances and redefined spaces and forms of protest. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BABY boom generation , *COHORT analysis , *GENERATIONS , *YOUTH , *SOCIAL status , *ECONOMIC development , *DEMOGRAPHY - Abstract
This article argues that the post-war baby boomers led a long generation in which successive cohorts achieved, and came to expect, continuous improvement in living standards. The article proceeds to argue that current cohorts of young people in all Western countries will become the vanguard of a successor generation, distinguished by a different youth life stage and also by different characteristic experience of adulthood and, eventually, a different politics than the generation's predecessor. It is argued that the new generation's situation arose initially within the working classes and has now spread upwards. The article suggests that this new trend is unlikely to be reversed on account of (1) economic growth rates in Western countries slowing since the three decades that immediately followed the Second World War; (2) labour's declining share of gross domestic product and wider income inequalities within countries; (3) costs of imported commodities will most likely continue to rise; (4) new cohorts of workers will have to bear some of the costs of supporting swollen cohorts of retired citizens, tackling pollution and alleviating climate change; (5) the costs of raising children are likely to continue to rise and new cohorts of workers will most likely need to make some private provisions for their own health care and retirement incomes; (6) there are now excessive numbers of higher education graduates in all world regions relative to the number of graduate jobs; and (7) the changing class demography in West Europe and North America. The article concludes by considering possible outcomes which include intensified inter- and intra-generational conflict. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

YOUTH , *ANTHROPOLOGY , *CROSS-cultural studies , *ADOLESCENCE , *SOCIOLOGY , *GLOBALIZATION , *CAPITALISM , *TRANSNATIONALISM , *LOCAL culture - Abstract
The study of youth played a central role in anthropology in the first half of the twentieth century, giving rise to a still-thriving cross-cultural approach to adolescence as a life stage. Yet the emphasis on adolescence as a staging ground for integration into the adult community often obscures young people's own cultural agency or frames it solely in relation to adult concerns. By contrast, sociology has long considered youth cultures as central objects of study, whether as deviant subcultures or as class-based sites of resistance. More recently, a third approach—an anthropology of youth—has begun to take shape, sparked by the stimuli of modernity and globalization and the ambivalent engagement of youth in local contexts. This broad and interdisciplinary approach revisits questions first raised in earlier sociological and anthropological frameworks, while introducing new issues that arise under current economic, political, and cultural conditions. The anthropology of youth is characterized by its attention to the agency of young people, its concern to document not just highly visible youth cultures but the entirety of youth cultural practice, and its interest in how identities emerge in new cultural formations that creatively combine elements of global capitalism, transnationalism, and local culture. In this study, the comparison of Deliduman novel which is among Turkish youth literature genre and Tschick novel which is an awarded German literature work, was made in terms of youth cultures and the charachters of the novels. The comparisons were made with reference to Turkish-German youth cultures, adolescent psychology, adolescent crisis and language styles of adolescents in both works. It was considered that, the works of literary genres for children and youth were not examined frequently in Turkey and Europe. For this reason, Deliduman and Tschick works have been evaluated to contribute to the genre of children and youth literature in terms of youth cultures, adolescent novels and Turkish-German youth cultures. The first chapter of thesis was written regarding concept of literature youth, youth genres, adolescent novel concepts, by considering Turkish and German adolescent novels; and historical andconceptual descriptions were mentioned in the works of this kind in Europe. In the fourth chapter, the similarities and differences between the two works are analyzed. Then, TurkishGerman youth cultures are mentioned. In the fifth chapter, the cultural traces and the focus of the problems are mentioned. In the conclusion part of the thesis, the importance of both works in terms of Turkish-German youth cultures, the problems in the process of adolescents, are discussed. UID/ELT/04097/2013 In the wake of the American examples provided, in and since the 1950s, by Bill Haley (1925-1981), Little Richard (1932-), Jerry Lee Lewis (1935-) and Elvis Presley 1935-1977), among others, the association of the British Sixties with emerging and expanding youth (sub- and counter-) cultures and pop music in particular needs no special demonstration. I therefore decided to narrow down my selection to songs whose lyrics focus explicitly on the overall chosen topic --- youth --- and I ended up with three, for us to listen to, remember and hopefully comment upon, if only in the privacy of our own images and memories of the Sixties. publishersversion published

This paper has an eminently theoretical nature and proposes a brief conceptual itinerary about how, since the post-war, the social sciences in general and sociology in particular, have considered the contemporary youth (sub)cultures. It recovers some of the essential foundations of the discipline associated with the Chicago School; then it discusses the invaluable contribution of the cultural studies but also the main criticisms that were pointed out to the CCCS’s researchers; and, fi nally, it explores some of the recent theoretical contributions associated with the so-called post-subcultural studies, refl ecting and considering the main limits, dilemmas and challenges that are currently faced by researchers who propose to study contemporary youth cultures and sociabilities.

The generation of Valencian people born during the seventies and at the beginning of the eighties has its own specific features that make it an interesting object of study. The new social and cultural contexts generated by globalization and the Spanish and Valencian political paradigm that emerged during the democratic transition marked a completely unprecedented scenario. In this context the normalization of education through the medium of Catalan, achieved in 1983, was an outstanding historic milestone. Through the interrelation of disciplines and the contextualization of backgrounds, this paper presents the main ideas of an earlier study in which we explored this generation’s cultural strategies and identities in the process of cultural recovery in the País Valencià. This study takes a look at how the historic innovation of education in Catalan and the new youth cultures affected the construction of identity and this generation’s cultural actions.

Palabras claves: Linfoma extranodal difuso, canino.ABSTRACT: A 6-year old bitch was taken to the Universidad de los Llanos’ Veterinary Clinic; the dog’s owner did not report vaccination history or past illness. Clinical examination revealed a poor physical condition (2/5), the absence of upper and lower incisors, bilateral alopecia in the nape, neck and back, wet dermatitis on the withers, hyperkeratosis, hyperpigmentation and a mild limp affecting the fore and hind limbs. Euthanasia was performed, followed by necropsy; tissues were sampled, fixed in 10 % formalin buffer and sent to the Animal Histopathology Laboratory (Universidad de los Llanos). The samples were processed using routine optical microscopy methods; 3-4mm thick histological sections were stained with haematoxylin and eosin (H&E), toluidine blue and periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) staining methods. The necropsy report sent to theAnimal Histopathology Laboratory (Universidad de los Llanos) reported the following macroscopic findings: a whitish, smooth to the touch, 3 x 1.5 cm mass in the urethral mucosa, and a white focus in the left renal cortex, intestinal congestion with the presence of Toxocara canis and Ancylostoma caninum. A large and small cell lymphoma was diagnosed in the urethra and renal cortex mucosa during histopathological analysis. Microscopic examination reported dimorphic lymphoid cells having different sized eccentric nuclei, some of them binucleated. Multicentric lymphoma of big and small cells located in the renal cortex and urethral mucosa was diagnosed; mastocytoma was discarded by blue toluidine method because there was no evidence of a metacromasy in the cytoplasmic granules. The mental health status has improved in the overall population recent years although it is still worrying many young people who feel that they have a poor psychological health. A phenomenon that has increased recently, and are linked to mental illness, are various forms of self-injury acts. It has previously been shown that other types of risk behaviours spread in populations by individuals influenced by each other. The background of this study was to examine whether the increase in selfinjury acts can be the result of a form of contagion, rather than merely a sign of impaired mental health. Since a lot of young people's social life takes place on the Internet, this was the arena which was investigated. The study is based on a survey (n = 192) and was designed to examine how well young people were aware of the phenomenon of self-injury, and how they communicated with and how they were influenced by their friends. The results showed that more than half of the participants had been in contact with self-injury such as pictures or written messages on the Internet. Among the respondents 86% of the girls and 71% of the boys also knew at least one person who deliberately harmed themselves. Since adolescents are exposed to this behaviour from many directions, it is reasonable to assume that individuals who experience some form of mental stress may be influenced by others to try self-destructive behaviour. The behaviour seems to be more prevalent than would be expected if a severer mental illness was the solely cause. Early work on self-esteem and ensuring children and young people have a safe social network around them can be a way to provide them with the resilience needed to withstand the negative influences from their surroundings.

The proposal for the next project is to analyse the phenomenon of the Body at the College, understood that, as a social construction, producer and reproducer of cultural senses. Most studies on Youth and Education have been concerned about issues related to desertion, the lack of interest, the possibilities of access and retention, social class and type of education, training and its relation to the market of work, but omitting or minimizing analysis regarding the status of youth. In recent years, several studies have begun to investigate how "filters" youth in school and how this institution questions and build youth. The line at which our project is located. The main objective is to observe and discover the characteristics that adopt the corporal practices of youth subjects, transiting the daily life of a privately run religious school in the city of La Plata, analyzing uses and representations that unfold in different sceneries of interaction. It ascribed to the need to analyze the logic of youth acting to understand the new and varied forms of participation in High School level. As the project takes on a provisional nature and not definitive, thus the theoretical lines of this ongoing investigation, expressed in the body of this article, reflect the provisional status of the construction of the research object. Located in the qualitative perspective-ethnographic in principle we should "suspend" any theory to "get into the field", but aware of the impossibility of this methodological principle, we believe appropriate to address some theoretical approaches to "confess" our position and allow us to develop categories, even though flexible, will be put into "dialogue" with reality., Departamento de Educación Física

culturas juvenis ,youth ,youth cultures ,jovens - Abstract
The present paper aims to discuss ways by which youth cultures have been presented, from cultural point of view. It argues that youth cultures have mobile and multiple senses, incorporating, mixing and inventing symbols and emblems, in a continual movement that makes it difficult to represent them. We firstly build on the assumption that there is a great diversity within the "youth" category, comprising: students, bands, punks, popular protestant religious people, small businessmen, ravers, unemployed people, "traffic dealers", all being children of the modern age with its crisis and disenchantement; secondly, we take into account the complex and highly changeable contemporary context, in which these young people live. The article is organised in three thematic axes: a) analysis of the discourses of those that have produced knowledge about youth; b) discussion of "new" sceneries of youth cultures, as well as its material and symbolic territories; c) perspectives and challenges that the field of studies concerning youth cultures has been posing to social sciences.
