5. 'Dailiness' in The Multimedia Environment: Youth Media Practices and The Temporal Structure of The Life-World

The paper explores the ways 'media savvy' youth use multimedia environment in different everyday practices and the process of 'dailiness' construction through their interaction with different communication media. Theoretical framework which is applied combines theory of media practice and the media phenomenology (Scannell 1996), with the concept of media use genres as the interpretative conceptual tool (Bakardjieva 2005, Ito et al. 2013). Findings are based on the qualitative interpretative analysis of the diaries and autobiographical reflections on media use written by students (N=64) of the first year of the graduate study of journalism on the Faculty of Political Science in Zagreb (intensity sample). The results show how the construction of 'dailiness' in multimedia environment takes place through the complex interarticulations between different communication media wherein it is necessary to take into account full available media matrix and the interactional context.

Instagram je u današnje vrijeme popularna društvena mreža, osobito među mladima. Cilj rada bio je utvrditi koje se mogućnosti Instagrama kao društvenog medija najčešće koriste u samoprezentaciji mladih te kako to oblikuje autobiografski narativ mladih o sebi. Polazilo se od teorijske pretpostavke da je Instagram medij koji mladima služi za samoprezentaciju. Teorijski pristupi temelje se na autobiografskim korisničkim praksama nasuprot Manovichevoj konceptualizaciji društvenih medija kao baze podataka. Metodom analize sadržaja istraženo je kakvim se sadržajem mladi samoprezentiraju, koji je najčešće objavljen sadržaj te odnos slike i teksta na Instagramu. Istraživanje je provedeno na prigodnom uzorku javnih Instagram profila hrvatskih korisnika u dobi od 18 do 24 godine. Rezultati istraživanja pokazuju kako mladi korisnici Instagrama najčešće objavljuju fotografije raznih aktivnosti, kao i fotografije i tekstualne opise koji se mogu okarakterizirati kao pozitivni. Instagram kao medij mladima služi u svrhu vizualne komunikacije i dokumentacije vlastitog života, dok prisutnost na mreži potpomaže i funkciju socijalne interakcije s vršnjacima., Instagram is a popular social network nowadays, especially among young people. The aim of the paper was to identify which Instagram features are most commonly used in youth self-presentation and how this shapes the autobiographical narrative of young people about themselves. It was based on the theoretical assumption that Instagram is a medium for self-presentation of young people. Theoretical approaches are based on autobiographical user practices as opposed to Manovich's conceptualization of social media as a database. The content analysis method explored what kind of content young people present themselves, what is the most published content, and the relationship between image and text on Instagram. The study was conducted on a convenience sample of public Instagram profiles of Croatian users aged 18-24. Results show that young Instagram users most often post photos of various activities, as well as photos and text descriptions that can be described as positive. Instagram serves as a medium for young people for the purpose of visual communication and documentation of their own lives, while online presence supports the function of social interaction with peers.

Društveni mediji sastavni su dio života mnogih ljudi, naročito mlade populacije koja se internetom pa i društvenim medijima vrlo često koristi. Kako bi išli u korak s vremenom, političari su svoje programe prenijeli i u virtualni svijet, pa se velika većina njih koristi i društvenim medijima da bi se približili javnosti. Društveni mediji za njih su korisniji i adekvatniji pristup jer na taj način djeluju bez posredništva tradicionalnih medija, već se izravno obraćaju publici. Populistički političari poznati su po iznimno dobrom snalaženju na društvenim medijima gdje okupljaju sve veći broj simpatizera i pratitelja. U ovom radu dokazano je da mladi simpatiziraju populističke političare i stranke u većoj mjeri nego tradicionalne političare i stranke. Provedena anketa dokazala je i povezanost između rasta popularnosti populističkih političara i stranaka i njihova aktivnog korištenja društvenih medija među mladom populacijom. A lot of people use social media daily as important part of their lives, especially youth, who use it most frequently in their free time. Politicians now also use social media in order to get closer to the voters. They find social media more useful than other, mainstream media for acheiving their goals because with using social media they get to speak directly to the people. Populist politicians are well known for successfully using social media, as they get more and more followers and fans every day. SAŽETAK Ovaj rad se bavi medijskim slučajem Edwarda Snowdena u Hrvatskoj u kontekstu teorije zavjere iz perspektive mladih. U ovom radu spominje se Mannheim koji je utopijsko stanje definirao kao ono koje se ne podudara s stanjem iz kojeg proizlazi, a Hrvatska kao postsocijalistička zemlja idealan je primjer liberalno-humanitarne utopije čiji stanovinici imaju ideje o Zapadu kao „savršenom“. No da taj ideal ruše zavjerničke teme prikazane u filmu Citizenfour pokazalo je istraživanje provedeno za potrebe ovog rada. Konačno, ovaj rad pokazao je vezu između diskursa i narativa iz filma i dominantnog čitanja medijskog teksta u smislu prepoznavanja elemenata teorije zavjera kod ciljane skupine istraživanja., This paper is about the media case of Edward Snowden and conspiracy theory from perspective of young people in Croatia. This paper deals with Mannheim's notion of utopian mind which he defines as a state of mind that is incongruous „with the state of realty within which occurs“, but Croatia as a post-socialist country is a perfect example of liberal-humainarian utopia whose citizens see the western sphere as a perfect one. But this ideal is negated by conspiracy themes presented in the documentary film Citizenfou , as it is shown by the research conducted for this paper. Finally, this paper shows the connection between the film's discourse and narrative, and dominant hegemonic position of decoding media texts in a way of recognition of conspiracy theory elements by the target group.

Rad istražuje kakav je prikaz mladih u suvremenom francuskom filmu. Temelji se na analizi deset francuskih filmova nastalih u razdoblju između 2000. i 2015. godine u kojima su protagonisti adolescenti. Radi se o coming-of-age filmovima koji prikazuju psihološki i moralni razvitak glavnih likova koji su na prelasku iz mladosti u odraslo doba. Prije same analize, rad donosi pregled razvoja francuskog filma, od braće Lumière koja su izumila kinematograf pa do suvremenog francuskog filma koji se analizira u radu. Istraživanje je pokazalo kako je dominantna tema u analiziranim suvremenim francuskim filmovima seksualnost. Mladi često promišljaju o navedenoj temi što ne čudi s obzirom da tek počinju razumijevati taj koncept te ispitivati svoj položaj u navedenom polju. Prilikom analize, adolescencija se pokazala kao turbulentno razdoblje u životu zbog čestih konflikata u koje mladi ulaze osjećajući se neshvaćeno. Sukobljavaju se najčešće u školi, s kolegama i profesorima, nakon čega slijede prepirke unutar obitelji. Svoje probleme i konflikte mladi rješavaju na različite načine, nerijetko izabirući bijeg kao najlakše rješenje. Kao krajnji način suočavanja s problemima neki odabiru samoubojstvo., The paper examines the representation of youth in contemporary French cinema. Research is based on an analysis of ten French films made between 2000 and 2015 in which protagonists are adolescents. These are coming-of-age movies that show the psychological and moral development of the main characters who are on the transition from youth to adulthood. Prior to analysis, paper offers a review of the development of French cinematography, from the time when brothers Lumière invented cinematograph until the contemporary French cinema, which is analyzed in the paper. Research has shown that the dominant theme in the analyzed contemporary French films is sexuality. Young people often think about indicated topic which is not surprising considering that they only begin to understand that concept and examine its position in that field. In the analysis, the adolescence proved to be a turbulent period of life because of frequent conflicts young people are being part of feeling misunderstood. They argue mostly at school with peers and teachers, followed by dissensions within the family. Youngsters are solving their own problems and conflicts in different ways, often choosing escape as the easiest solution. As the ultimate way of dealing with problems some choose suicide.
