Search

The mechanism of X-ray outbursts in Be X-ray binaries remains a mystery, and understanding their circumstellar discs is crucial for a solution of the mass-transfer problem. In particular, it is important to identify the Be star activities (e.g. pulsations) that cause mass ejection and, hence, disc formation. Therefore, we investigated the relationship between optical flux oscillations and the infrared (IR) excess in a sample of five Be X-ray binaries. Applying the Lomb–Scargle technique to high-cadence optical light curves from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (⁠|${\it TESS}$|⁠), we detected several significant oscillation modes in the 3–24 h period range for each source. We also measured the IR excess (a proxy for disc growth) of those five sources, using J -band light curves from Palomar Gattini-IR. In four of the five sources, we found anticorrelations between the IR excess and the amplitude of the main flux oscillation modes. This result is inconsistent with the conventional idea that non-radial pulsations drive mass ejections. We propose an alternative scenario where internal temperature variations in the Be star cause transitions between pulsation-active and mass-ejection-active states. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In order to understand the nature of super-Eddington accretion we must explore both the emission emerging directly from the inflow and its impact on the surroundings. In this paper, we test whether we can use the optical line emission of spatially resolved, ionized nebulae around ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) as a proxy for their X-ray luminosity. We choose the ULX NGC 6946 X-1 and its nebula, MF16, as a test case. By studying how the nebular optical line emission responds to assumed irradiation, we can infer the degree to which we require the UV or X-ray emission from the inflow to be collimated by optically thick winds seemingly ubiquitously associated with ULXs. We find that the nebula is highly sensitive to compact UV emission but mostly insensitive to hard X-rays. Our attempts to quantify the beaming of the soft and hard X-rays therefore strongly depends on the UV luminosity of the ULX in the centre of the nebula. We studied the multiband properties of two ultraluminous X-ray sources (2CXO J225728.9−410211 = X-1 and 2CXO J225724.7−410343 = X-2) and their surroundings, in the spiral galaxy NGC 7424. Both sources have approached X-ray luminosities L X ∼ 1040 erg s−1 at some epochs. Thanks to a more accurate astrometric solution (based on Australia Telescope Compact Array and Gaia data), we identified the point-like optical counterpart of X-1, which looks like an isolated B8 supergiant (M ≈ 9 M ⊙, age ≈30 Myr). Instead, X-2 is in a star-forming region (size of about 100 pc × 150 pc), near young clusters and ionized gas. Very large telescope long-slit spectra show a spatially extended region of He  ii λ4686 emission around the X-ray position, displaced by about 50 pc from the brightest star cluster, which corresponds to the peak of lower ionization line emission. We interpret the He  ii λ4686 emission as a signature of X-ray photoionization from the ULX, while the other optical lines are consistent with UV ionization in an ordinary He ii region. The luminosity of this He++ nebula puts it in the same class as other classical photoionized ULX nebulae such as those around Holmberg II X-1 and NGC 5408 X-1. We locate a strong (5.5 GHz luminosity |$\nu \, L_{\nu } \approx 10^{35}$|  erg s−1), steep-spectrum, unresolved radio source at the peak of the low-ionization lines, and discuss alternative physical scenarios for the radio emission. GRS 1747−312 is a bright Low-Mass X-ray Binary in the globular cluster Terzan 6, located at a distance of 9.5 kpc from the Earth. It exhibits regular outbursts approximately every 4.5 months, during which periodic eclipses are known to occur. These eclipses have only been observed in the outburst phase, and are not clearly seen when the source is quiescent. Recent Chandra observations of the source were performed in 2019 June and 2021 April, June, and August. Two of these observations captured the source during its outburst, and showed clear flux decreases at the expected time of eclipse. The other two observations occurred when the source was quiescent. We present the discovery of a dip that occurred during the quiescent state. The dip is of longer duration and its time of occurrence does not fit the ephemeris of the shorter eclipses. We study the physical characteristics of the dip and determine that it has all the properties of an eclipse by an object with a well defined surface. We find that there are several possibilities for the nature of the object causing the 5.3 ks eclipse. First, GRS 1747−312 may be an X-ray triple, with an LMXB orbited by an outer third object, which could be an M-dwarf, brown dwarf, or planet. Secondly, there could be two LMXBs in close proximity to each other, potentially bound together. High-mass X-ray binaries hosting red supergiant (RSG) donors are a rare but crucial phase in massive stellar evolution, with only one source previously known in the Milky Way. In this letter, we present the identification of the second Galactic RSG X-ray binary SWIFT  J0850.8−4219. We identify the source 2MASS 08504008−4211514 as the likely infrared counterpart with a chance coincidence probability ≈5 × 10−6. We present a |$1.0{\!-\!}2.5\, \mu$| m spectrum of the counterpart, exhibiting features characteristic of late-type stars and an exceptionally strong He  i emission line, corroborating the identification. Based on i) the strength of the 12CO(2,0) band, ii) strong CN bandheads and absent TiO bandheads at ≈1.1 µm and iii) equivalent width of the Mg  i |$1.71\, \mu$| m line, we classify the counterpart to be a K3–K5 type RSG with an effective temperature of 3820 ± 100 K, located at a distance of ≈12 kpc. We estimate the source X-ray luminosity to be (4 ± 1) × 1035 erg s−1, with a hard photon index (Γ < 1), arguing against a white dwarf accretor but consistent with a magnetized neutron star in the propeller phase. Our results highlight the potential of systematic near-infrared spectroscopy of Galactic hard X-ray sources in completing our census of the local X-ray binary population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We revisit various sets of published results from X-ray and optical studies of the Galactic black hole (BH) candidate MAXI J0637-430, which went into outburst in 2019. Combining the previously reported values of peak outburst luminosity, best-fitting radii of inner and outer accretion disc, viewing angle, exponential decay time-scale, and peak-to-peak separation of the He II λ4686 disc emission line, we improve the constraints on the system parameters. We estimate a heliocentric distance d ≈ (8.7 ± 2.3) kpc, a projected Galactocentric distance R ≈ (13.2 ± 1.8) kpc and a height | z | ≈ (3.1 ± 0.8) kpc from the Galactic plane. It is the currently known Milky Way BH candidate located farthest from the Galactic Centre. We infer a BH mass M 1 ≈ (5.1 ± 1.6)M⊙, a spin parameter a * ≲ 0.25, a donor star mass M 2 ≈ (0.25 ± 0.07)M⊙, a peak Eddington ratio λ ≈ 0.17 ± 0.11 and a binary period |$P_{\rm orb} \approx 2.2^{+0.8}_{-0.6}$|  hr. This is the shortest period measured or estimated so far for any Galactic BH X-ray binary. If the donor star is a main-sequence dwarf, such a period corresponds to the evolutionary stage where orbital shrinking is driven by gravitational radiation and the star has regained contact with its Roche lobe (low end of the period gap). The three Galactic BHs with the shortest period (≲3 hr) are also those with the highest vertical distance from the Galactic plane (≳2 kpc). We present an analysis of the ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) population in 75 Virgo cluster late-type galaxies, including all those with a star formation rate ≳1 M⊙ yr−1 and a representative sample of the less star forming ones. This study is based on 110 observations obtained over 20 yr with the Chandra X-ray Observatory Advanced Camera for Imaging Spectroscopy. As part of a Large Chandra Program, new observations were obtained for 52 of these 75 galaxies. The data are complete to a sensitivity of ≈1039 erg s−1, with a typical detection limit of ≈3 × 1038 erg s−1 for the majority of the sources. The catalogue contains about 80 ULXs (0.3–10 keV luminosity >1039 erg s−1), and provides their location, observed flux, de-absorbed luminosity, and (for the 25 most luminous ones) simple X-ray spectral properties. We discuss the ULX luminosity function in relation to the mass and star formation rate of the sample galaxies. We show that recent models of low-mass plus high-mass X-ray binary populations (scaling with stellar mass and star formation rate, respectively) are mostly consistent with our observational results. We tentatively identify the most luminous X-ray source in the sample (a source in IC 3322A with L X ≈ 6 × 1040 erg s−1) as a recent supernova or its young remnant. We have studied the unusual time variability of an ultraluminous X-ray source in M 101, 4XMM J140314.2 + 541806 (henceforth, J1403), using Chandra and XMM-Newton data. Over the last two decades, J1403 has shown short-duration outbursts with an X-ray luminosity ∼1–3 × 1039 erg s−1, and longer intervals at luminosities ∼0.5–1 × 1038 erg s−1. The bimodal behaviour and fast outburst evolution (sometimes only a few days) are more consistent with an accretor/propeller scenario for a neutron star than with the canonical outburst cycles of stellar-mass black holes. If this scenario is correct, the luminosities in the accretor and propeller states suggest a fast spin (P ≈ 5 ms) and a low surface magnetic field (B ∼ 1010 G), despite our identification of J1403 as a high-mass X-ray binary. The most striking property of J1403 is the presence of strong ∼600-s quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs), mostly around frequencies of ≈1.3–1.8 mHz, found at several epochs during the ultraluminous regime. We illustrate the properties of such QPOs, in particular their frequency and amplitude changes between and within observations, with a variety of techniques (Fast Fourier Transforms, Lomb–Scargle periodograms, weighted wavelet Z-transform analysis). The QPO frequency range <10 mHz is an almost unexplored regime in X-ray binaries and ultraluminous X-ray sources. We compare our findings with the (few) examples of very low frequency variability found in other accreting sources, and discuss possible explanations (Lense–Thirring precession of the inner flow or outflow; radiation pressure limit-cycle instability; marginally stable He burning on the neutron star surface). We studied the apparent galaxy pair NGC 1232/NGC 1232A with Chandra , looking for evidence of interactions and collisions. We report that there is no cloud of diffuse emission in NGC 1232, contrary to previous claims in the literature. Instead, we find that the small 'companion' galaxy NGC 1232A contains three ultraluminous X-ray sources with peak 0.3–10 keV luminosities above 1040 erg s−1 (assuming a cosmological distance of ≈93 Mpc for this galaxy). For its mass, morphology, metal abundance, and bright ULX population, NGC 1232A is analogous to the more nearby late-type spiral NGC 1313. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report on the detection of a pulsating Fe K α line in the High Mass X-ray Binary (HMXB) GX 301-2, from a 40-ks Chandra observation near periastron. The pulsations in the Fe K α emission appeared only in the first 7 ks of the observation, with a period and phase profile similar to those of the continuum. The presence of pulsed fluorescent lines is an unusual property in HMXBs. After 7 ks, the continuum flux increased by a factor of three, the Fe K α flux increased only by about 10 per cent, and the pulsating signal in the line disappeared. Finally, in the second half of the observation, both the continuum and the line flux dropped by a similar factor of 2. We suggest that the pulsating component of the Fe K α line is coming from a transient non-isotropic distribution of dense gas around the neutron star, for example, an accretion stream induced by periastron passage, or from the illuminated surface of the donor star. . We studied the eclipsing ultraluminous X-ray source CG X-1 in the Circinus galaxy, re-examining two decades of Chandra and XMM-Newton observations. The short binary period (7.21 hr) and high luminosity (LX ≈ 1040 erg s-1) suggest a Wolf-Rayet donor, close to filling its Roche lobe; this is the most luminous Wolf-Rayet X-ray binary known to-date, and a potential progenitor of a gravitational-wave merger. We phase-connect all observations, and show an intriguing dipping pattern in the X-ray lightcurve, variable from orbit to orbit. We interpret the dips as partial occultation of the X-ray emitting region by fast-moving clumps of Compton-thick gas. We suggest that the occulting clouds are fragments of the dense shell swept-up by a bow shock ahead of the compact object, as it orbits in the wind of the more massive donor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We discovered eclipses and dips in two luminous (and highly variable) X-ray sources in M 51. One (CXOM51 J132943.3+471135) is an ultraluminous supersoft source, with a thermal spectrum at a temperature of about 0.1 keV and characteristic blackbody radius of about 104 km. The other (CXOM51 J132946.1+471042) has a two-component spectrum with additional thermal-plasma emission; it approached an X-ray luminosity of 1039 erg s−1 during outbursts in 2005 and 2012. From the timing of three eclipses in a series of Chandra observations, we determine the binary period (52.75 ± 0.63 h) and eclipse fraction ( $22 \pm 0.1\hbox{ per cent}$ ) of CXOM51 J132946.1+471042. We also identify a blue optical counterpart in archival Hubble Space Telescope images, consistent with a massive donor star (mass of ∼20–35 M⊙). By combining the X-ray light-curve parameters with the optical constraints on the donor star, we show that the mass ratio in the system must be $M_2/M_1 \gtrsim 18$ and therefore the compact object is most likely a neutron star (exceeding its Eddington limit in outburst). The general significance of our result is that we illustrate one method (applicable to high-inclination sources) of identifying luminous neutron star X-ray binaries, in the absence of X-ray pulsations or phase-resolved optical spectroscopy. We have performed a set of simulations of expanding, spherically symmetric nebulae inflated by winds from accreting black holes in ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs).We implemented a realistic cooling function to account for free-free and bound-free cooling. For all model parameters we considered, the forward shock in the interstellar medium becomes radiative at a radius ~100 pc. The emission is primarily in optical and UV, and the radiative luminosity is about 50 per cent of the total kinetic luminosity of the wind. In contrast, the reverse shock in the wind is adiabatic so long as the terminal outflow velocity of the wind vw ≳ 0.003c. The shocked wind in these models radiates in X-rays, but with a luminosity of only ~1035 erg s-1. For wind velocities vw ≲0.001c, the shocked wind becomes radiative, but it is no longer hot enough to produce X-rays. Instead it emits in optical and UV, and the radiative luminosity is comparable to 100 per cent of the wind kinetic luminosity. We suggest that measuring the optical luminosities and putting limits on the X-ray and radio emission from shock-ionized ULX bubbles may help in estimating the mass outflow rate of the central accretion disc and the velocity of the outflow. We present optical spectra and images of the X-ray binary Circinus X-1. The optical light curve of Cir X-1 is strongly variable, changing in brightness by 1.2 mag in the space of four days. The shape of the light curve is consistent with that seen in the 1980s, when the X-ray and radio counterparts of the source were at least ten times as bright as they are currently. We detect strong, variable H a emission lines, consisting of multiple components which vary with orbital phase. We estimate the extinction to the source from the strength of the diffuse interstellar bands and the Balmer decrement; the two methods give AV = 7.6 ± 0.6 mag and AV > 9.1 mag, respectively. The optical light curve can be modelled as arising from irradiation of the companion star by the central X-ray source, where a low-temperature star fills its Roche lobe in an orbit of moderate eccentricity (e ~ 0.4). We suggest that the companion star is overluminous and underdense, due to the impact of the supernova which occurred less than 5000 yr ago. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

One hundred seven ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) with 0.3-10.0 keV luminosities in excess of 1039 erg s-1 are identified in a complete sample of 127 nearby galaxies. The sample includes all galaxies within 14.5 Mpc above the completeness limits of both the Uppsala Galaxy Catalogue and the Infrared Astronomical Satellite survey. The galaxy sample spans all Hubble types, a four-decade range in mass, 7.5 < log(M/M⊙) < 11.4, and in star formation rate, 0.0002 < SFR(M⊙ yr-1) ≤ 3.6. ULXs are detected in this sample at rates of one per 3.2 x 1010 M⊙, one per ~0.5 M⊙ yr-1 star formation rate, and one per 57 Mpc³ corresponding to a luminosity density of ~2 x 1037 erg s-1 Mpc-3. At these rates we estimate as many as 19 additional ULXs remain undetected in fainter dwarf galaxies within the survey volume. An estimated 14 objects, or 13%, of the 107 ULX candidates are expected to be background sources. The differential ULX luminosity function shows a power-law slope α ~ -0.8 to -2.0 with an exponential cutoff at ~20 x 1039 erg s-1 with precise values depending on the model and on whether the ULX luminosities are estimated from their observed numbers of counts or, for a subset of candidates, from their spectral shapes. Extrapolating the observed luminosity function predicts at most one very luminous ULX, LX ~ 1041 erg s-1, within a distance as small as 100 Mpc. The luminosity distribution of ULXs within the local universe cannot account for the recent claims of luminosities in excess of 2 x 1041 erg s-1, requiring a new population class to explain these extreme objects. The existence of black holes of masses – has important implications for the formation and evolution of star clusters and supermassive black holes. One of the strongest candidates to date is the hyperluminous X-ray source (HLX1), possibly located in the S0–a galaxy ESO 243–49, but the lack of an identifiable optical counterpart had hampered its interpretation. Using the Magellan telescope, we have discovered an unresolved optical source with mag and mag within HLX1’s positional error circle. This implies an average X-ray/optical flux ratio . Taking the same distance as ESO 243–49, we obtain an intrinsic brightness mag, comparable to that of a massive globular cluster. Alternatively, the optical source is consistent with a main-sequence M star in the Galactic halo (for example an M4.4 star at kpc). We also examined the properties of ESO 243–49 by combining Swift/Ultraviolet/Optical Telescope (UVOT) observations with stellar population modelling. We found that the overall emission is dominated by a -Gyr-old stellar population, but the UV emission at Å is mostly due to ongoing star formation at a rate of yr . The UV emission is more intense (at least a enhancement above the mean) north-east of the nucleus, in the same quadrant as HLX1. With the combined optical and X-ray measurements, we put constraints on the nature of HLX1. We rule out a foreground star and a background AGN. Two alternative scenarios are still viable. HLX1 could be an accreting intermediate mass black hole in a star cluster, which may itself be the stripped nucleus of a dwarf galaxy that passed through ESO 243–49, an event which might have caused the current episode of star formation. Or, it could be a neutron star in the Galactic halo, accreting from an M4–M5 donor star. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Sc galaxy M 99 in the Virgo Cluster has been strongly affected by tidal interactions and recent close encounters, responsible for an asymmetric spiral pattern and a high star formation rate. Our XMM–Newton study shows that the inner disc is dominated by hot plasma at kT≈ 0.30 keV, with a total X-ray luminosity of ≈1041 erg s−1 in the 0.3–12 keV band. At the outskirts of the galaxy, away from the main star-forming regions, there is an ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) with an X-ray luminosity of ≈2 × 1040 erg s−1 and a hard spectrum well fitted by a power law of photon index Γ≈ 1.7. This source is close to the location where a massive H i cloud appears to be falling on to the M 99 disc at a relative speed of >100 km s−1. We suggest that there may be a direct physical link between fast cloud collisions and the formation of bright ULXs, which may be powered by accreting black holes with masses ∼100 M⊙. External collisions may trigger large-scale dynamical collapses of protoclusters, leading to the formation of very massive (≳200 M⊙) stellar progenitors; we argue that such stars may later collapse into massive black holes if their metal abundance is sufficiently low. If the standard disk-blackbody approximation is used to estimate black hole (BH) masses in ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs), the inferred masses are ∼ 1000 M⊙. However, we argue that such an approximation cannot be applied to ULXs, because their disks are only radiating a small fraction of the accretion power, and are therefore cooler than they would be in a thermal-dominant state, for a given BH mass. Instead, we suggest that a different phenomenological approximation should be used, based on three observable parameters: disk luminosity, peak temperature, and ratio between thermal and non-thermal emission.
