Several samples coming from the recently discovered (February 2019) Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age Chovdar necropolis in Azerbaijan were analysed using the X-ray fluorescence (XRF) technique. The analysis allowed a preliminary classification of the samples in eight groups based on their composition, obtained from the XRF spectra using the fundamental parameter method. Max Ernst was one of the most influential artists associated with both the Dada and Surrealist movements. However, until now, only few scientific studies have been devoted to his works. This paper presents the results of a multi-analytical investigation on six oil paintings, made between 1927 and 1942, belonging to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice (Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, New York). Through a combined art historical and scientific approach, this study aims at understanding Ernst's painting techniques, including frottage, grattage, dripping, and decalcomania, the used materials, and the state of conservation of the artworks. Non-invasive in situ investigations were performed by means of Vis–NIR multi-spectral imaging, X-ray fluorescence, external reflection FTIR and Raman spectroscopy. Imaging analysis revealed important information about Ernst's painting methods while the other techniques provided useful information about the ground layer, the painting materials and the presence of alteration products. Ernst's palette discloses great freedom in his use of materials and evolution during the time. This investigation demonstrates that an integrated, non-invasive, diagnostic approach provides a thorough analysis of materials and execution techniques of Ernst' masterworks allowing an in-depth knowledge of his highly skilled work. The aim of this research is to characterize the binder and aggregate fractions of sixteen mortar samples from the bell tower of the St. Nicholas church at Pisa, using X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), simultaneous thermogravimetric/differential scanning calorimetry analysis (TG/DSC), optical microscopy (OM) and electron microscopy equipped with a microanalysis system (SEM/EDS). The analytical procedure used for studying the mortars is based on TG/DSC analyses performed on the binder fractions, obtained by disaggregation of the mortar samples, and on micro-analytical data directly collected on the mortar binders combined with chemical, mineralogical (qualitative composition) and petrographic (modal composition) data measured on the bulk mortar samples. The collected data indicate that the examined samples are hydraulic lime mortars with natural river sands (average binder/aggregate ratio 1:1), except for two of them which are artificial pozzolanic mortars with cocciopesto . The most probable raw materials used to produce the mortars are the binding materials obtained by firing carbonate rocks locally available, cherty limestone and subordinately Mt. Pisano marble, and the Arno River sands or, more likely, natural admixtures of Arno and Serchio River sandy sediments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Man has always used writing to be able to communicate, express, and disseminate his thoughts. In time, many different coloured extracts of plant and animal origin have been used to produce inks; after the development of synthetic chemistry, artificial and synthetic dyes started to be widely exploited. The end of the 19th century marked great technological and industrial innovations in commercial production of artists' materials. To reveal ink formulations and build a database of red inks by different producers, we developed a multi-analytical approach and investigated a collection of writing inks produced in France in the late 19th – early 20th century. The materials used as binders, additives, dyes, and pigments have been investigated by high performance liquid chromatography coupled with diode array and tandem mass spectrometric detectors (HPLC-DAD-MS2), in situ derivatisation pyrolysis coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (Py(HMDS)-GC/MS), surface enhanced Raman (SERS, TLC-SERS) and X-Ray Fluorescence spectroscopies. Several dyes and pigments were detected, showing that the French ink's formulations of the early days of synthetic dye industry were based on rhodamine B and 6G , eosin Y , rose Bengal and methyl or crystal violet. Instead, as binder and additives only gum Arabic and shellac resin have been identified, respectively. Mass spectrometry also allowed us to detect possible by-products of the synthesis of ink's dyes and even early degradation products, that can be used for ink identification in historical writings and drawings. Our studies can pave the way to investigate inks in historical samples by introducing ultra-sensitive chromatographic and mass spectrometric methods in the array of analytical tools available to the chemist. Abstract The chemical characterization of paint material is paramount for the understanding of painting techniques, provenance studies and for assessing conservation strategies. In particular, the chemical characterization of both the organic and inorganic fraction of lakes is fundamental to assess the technologies used in their production. In this short note, we present a pilot study by comparing several micro-destructive and non-destructive methods for the comprehensive characterization of the organic and inorganic fraction of reference madder lakes. In the final procedure, the chromophores-containing molecules were separated using a sample preparation procedure based on acid hydrolysis and solvent extraction, and analysed by high-pressure liquid chromatography with UV-Vis detector (HPLC-UV/Vis). Laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) and X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) were used for the study of the elemental composition. Multispectral Imaging was also applied in order to evaluate its potentialities to distinguish amongst different red lakes. The Attirement of the Bride , painted by Max Ernst in 1940, is permanently on display in the Peggy Guggenheim Collection (PGC) in Venice. Within the framework of a larger study of materials and techniques of works by Ernst at the PGC, researchers carried out a series of non-invasive analyses. A combined approach based on Vis-NIR multispectral imaging, Raman Spectroscopy, X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF), and External Reflection Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (ER-FTIR), was conducted insitu in the museum galleries. In addition, two micro-samples were analysed with SEM-EDS and μ-Raman. This approach produced vital information on the preparatory drawing, the pentimenti , the pigments, the extenders and the alteration products present in the painting. The results showed also the presence of a white preparatory layer, under the pictorial one and above the canvas, composed by lithopone (a mixture of zinc sulphide and barium sulphate), basic lead carbonate and calcium carbonate. The latter compound is probably present also as an extender. The palette included both traditional and new synthetic, commercial pigments, used as primary colours or in mixtures. Moreover, in several areas of the painting, zinc oxalates have been identified as alteration products and more rarely, zinc metal soaps, which could also be present as additives in the paint tube. • Methods for revealing hidden details in ancient manuscripts and paintings are presented. • Different experimental approaches are described. • The most effective techniques of image analysis are introduced. • Special attention is given to multi-spectral imaging and blind separation methods. • Several case studies are presented. In this work, a critical review of the current nondestructive probing and image analysis approaches is presented, to revealing otherwise invisible or hardly discernible details in manuscripts and paintings relevant to cultural heritage and archaeology. Multispectral imaging, X-ray fluorescence, Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and Thermography are considered, as techniques for acquiring images and spectral image sets; statistical methods for the analysis of these images are then discussed, including blind separation and false colour techniques. Several case studies are presented, with particular attention dedicated to the approaches that appear most promising for future applications. Some of the techniques described herein are likely to replace, in the near future, classical digital photography in the study of ancient manuscripts and paintings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The ''Monetiere'' of Florence hosts the most important collection of Etruscan coins in the world. In the framework of the longstanding collaboration between the Monetiere and the Applied Laser and Spectroscopy Laboratory in Pisa, the Etruscan gold coin collection of the museum was studied. The measurements were performed at the Monetiere, using a portable energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (XRF) instrument. The quantitative determination of the gold alloys used for the realization of the coins was obtained applying the fundamental parameters method to the XRF spectra; as a result, using the self-organizing maps method, we were able to classify the coins in four main groups. The main parameter determining the classification is the quantity of silver in the alloy. The results obtained shed some light about the origin of the coins under study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) micro-mapping is an important analytical tool for the study of geomaterials. In this work, this technique was applied, for the first time, to the analysis of alkali-activated materials and geopolymers, as well as rocks, mortars and bricks. The results obtained were compared with the ones obtained using Energy-Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence (ED-XRF) macro-mapping and the advantages of the LIBS approach (speed, lateral and in-depth resolution, capability of light elements analysis) were highlighted. The issues associated with the quantitative determination of the samples' composition from the analysis of the LIBS spectra were also briefly discussed.
