In this work, we investigate the effect of anti-site disorder on the half-metallic properties of a Mn2FeAl Heusler alloy thin film. The film was grown on TiN-buffered MgO 001 substrates via magnetron sputtering. A detailed structural characterization using x-ray diffraction (XRD) and anomalous XRD showed that the film crystallizes in the partially disordered L21 B structure with 33% disorder between the Mn(B) and Al(D) sites. We measure a positive anisotropic magnetoresistance in the film, which is an indication of non-half metallic behaviour. Our x-ray magnetic circular dichroism sum rules analysis shows that Mn carries the magnetic moment in the film, with a positive Fe moment. Experimentally determined moments correspond most closely with those found by density functional calculated for the L21 B structure with Mn(B) and Al(D) site disorder, matching the experimental structural analysis. We thus attribute the deviation from half-metallic behaviour to the formation of the L21 B structure. To realize a half-metallic Mn2FeAl film it is important that the inverse Heusler XA structure is stabilized with minimal anti-site atomic disorder.

Purpose: Chest x-rays are complex to report accurately. Viral pneumonia is often subtle in its radiological appearance. In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, rapid triage of cases and exclusion of other pathologies with artificial intelligence (AI) can assist over-stretched radiology departments. We aim to validate three open-source AI models on an external test set. Approach: We tested three open-source deep learning models, COVID-Net, COVIDNet-S-GEO, and CheXNet for their ability to detect COVID-19 pneumonia and to determine its severity using 129 chest x-rays from two different vendors Phillips and Agfa. Results: All three models detected COVID-19 pneumonia (AUCs from 0.666 to 0.778). Only the COVID Net-S-GEO and CheXNet models performed well on severity scoring (Pearson’s r 0.927 and 0.833, respectively); COVID-Net only performed well at either task on images taken with a Philips machine (AUC 0.735) and not an Agfa machine (AUC 0.598). Conclusions: Chest x-ray triage using existing machine learning models for COVID-19 pneumonia can be successfully implemented using open-source AI models. Evaluation of the model using local x-ray machines and protocols is highly recommended before implementation to avoid vendor or protocol dependent bias.

In this study, the employment of the X-ray irradiation as bioremediation method to treat parchment has been deeply investigated. In particular, the effect of the irradiation doses on the structural stability of collagen, the main constituent of parchment, has been evaluated on a series of modern parchment samples by means of different opto-thermal and spectroscopic techniques in order to obtain the dose-dependent effect of irradiation on collagen. Moreover, the long-term behavior of the irradiated parchment has been considered by analyzing the same series of samples after being hygrothermally artificially aged. Characterizations by light transmission analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and the ultraviolet–visible–near infrared (UV–Vis–NIR) reflectance one have been performed for the identification of the radio-induced effect on the parchment structure even in a dose range much wider than the need for sterilization. The obtained results have proved the safeness of the method in the short and long term confirming the applicability of this emerging procedure.

The VIP2 (VIolation of the Pauli Exclusion Principle) experiment at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory (LNGS) is searching for possible violations of standard quantum mechanics predictions in atoms at very high sensitivity. We investigate atomic transitions with precision X-ray spectroscopy in order to test the Pauli Exclusion Principle (PEP) and therefore the related spin-statistics theorem. We will present our experimental method for the search for "anomalous" (i.e. Pauli-forbidden) X-ray transitions in copper atoms, produced by "new" electrons, which could have tiny probability to undergo Pauli-forbidden transition to the ground state already occupied by two electrons. We will describe the VIP2 experimental setup, which is taking data at LNGS presently. The goal of VIP2 is to test the PEP for electrons with unprecedented accuracy, down to a limit in the probability that PEP is violated at the level of 10$^{-31}$. Purpose: Recently, progress has been achieved in implementing phase-contrast tomography of soft biological tissues at laboratory sources. This opens up opportunities for three-dimensional (3-D) histology based on x-ray computed tomography (μ- and nanoCT) in the direct vicinity of hospitals and biomedical research institutions. Combining advanced x-ray generation and detection techniques with phase reconstruction algorithms, 3-D histology can be obtained even of unstained tissue of the central nervous system, as shown, for example, for biopsies and autopsies of human cerebellum. Depending on the setup, i.e., source, detector, and geometric parameters, laboratory-based tomography can be implemented at very different sizes and length scales. We investigate the extent to which 3-D histology of neuronal tissue can exploit the cone-beam geometry at high magnification M using a nanofocus transmission x-ray tube (nanotube) with a 300 nm minimal spot size (Excillum), combined with a single-photon counting camera. Tightly approaching the source spot with the biopsy punch, we achieve high M≈101−102, high flux density, and exploit the superior efficiency of this detector technology. Approach: Different nanotube configurations such as spot size and flux, M, as well as exposure time, Fresnel number, and coherence are varied and selected in view of resolution, field of view, and/or phase-contrast requirements. Results: The data show that the information content for the cytoarchitecture is enhanced by the phase effect. Comparison of results to those obtained at a microfocus rotating-anode x-ray tomography setup with a high-resolution detector, i.e., in low-M geometry, reveals similar to slightly superior data quality for the nanotube setup. In addition to its compactness, reduced power consumption by a factor of 103, and shorter scan duration, the particular advantage of the nanotube setup also lies in its suitability for pixel detector technology, enabling an increased range of opportunities for applications in laboratory phase-contrast x-ray tomography. Conclusions: The phase retrieval scheme utilized mixes amplitude and phase contrast, with results being robust with respect to reconstruction parameters. Structural information content is comparable to slightly superior to previous results achieved with a microfocus rotating-anode setup but can be obtained in shorter scan time. Beyond advantages as compactness, lowered power consumption, and flexibility, the nanotube setup’s scalability in view of the progress in pixel detector technology is particularly beneficial. Further progress is thus likely to bring 3-D virtual histology to the performance in scan time and throughput required for clinical practice in neuropathology.

The emission of laser induced X-rays from materials processing ultra-short pulsed laser systems was measured. The absolute spectral photon fluence was determined using a thermoluminescence detector based few-channel spectrometer. The spectra at 10 cm from the laser focus were in the energy region between 2 and 25 keV with mean energies of ~4–6 keV (when weighted by fluence or directional dose equivalent) and up to 13 keV (when weighted by ambient dose equivalent). The operational quantities, H·′(0.07), H·′(3) and H·*(10), were determined to be in the order of 1600–7300, 16–71 and 1–4 mSv per hour processing time, respectively, depending on the material and condition of the workpiece. The dose contribution due to photons above 30 keV was for all quantities negligible, i.e. below 10−3.

The objective of this study was to examine the suitability of X-ray nanotomography for fibre bond research and examine how well the fibres are in contact and how the contact areas are located within the crossing areas.

X-ray nanotomography was successfully applied for studying individual fibre bonds. In spite of several problems a small number of fibre bonds between springwood fibres (unrefined and refined) were examined. The results show that only a fraction of the crossing areas of fibres was found to be bonded, and the reason may be partially in the surface chemical properties, and mechanical stiffness of fibre surfaces.

The need for mapping skin doses during fluoroscopically-guided X-ray procedures has been described by a number of institutions and experts. Different large photographic or X-ray films placed on the patient's skin have been found to be useful for recording doses up to 1.0-2.0 Gy - depending on the film - and up to 15 Gy using radiochromic films. Though the upper limit of the film sensitivity is seldom exceeded during interventional procedures, the main disadvantage of the X-ray films is still the excessive sensitivity for long, high dose procedures. Radiochromic films show poor definition for doses below 0.5 Gy and are expensive. The goal of the present paper is to analyse the possibilities of using common resin-coated photographic paper for this purpose. Sensitometric curves obtained with different paper types processed in conventional X-ray film automatic processors demonstrate that some of them can be used with better results than X-ray films at a very low cost. Doses from about 10 mGy to near 3.0 Gy can be measured with good accuracy using a variety of glossy photographic papers.

Because of a potential film cost savings of approximately 35% using photographic print paper instead of X-ray film in recording CT images, a comparison was undertaken of these hard copy recording methods. One hundred consecutive CT examinations were reviewed on the scanner display console and recorded on X-ray film and photographic print paper using a multi-imager camera. Hard copy images were compared for diagnostic adequacy. X-ray film adequately recorded the pathology in all cases. Photographic paper adequately recorded the pathology in 97% of cases. In 26% of cases X-ray film was felt to better display the CT diagnosis whereas in 2% of cases photographic paper better displayed the CT diagnosis. Test phantom scans recorded on both media showed no observable difference in spatial or contrast resolution.

Metallic dusts and fumes in air may be collected on filter paper and determined quantitatively by measurement of characteristic secondary x-rays produced by irradiation with high-voltage x-rays. Results are obtained rapidly and simply with little or no sample preparation and without sample destruction. A method is presented for preparation of reference standards, and x-ray characteristics of various types of filter media are discussed. A study of potential interferences is presented as well as results obtained in field sampling.

Fungal growth on paper is one among the causes responsible for paper deterioration in archives and libraries. The study of paper deterioration is a complex phenomenon in particular when it is due to the biotic action of fungi and bacteria. One of the major problems is the early detection of fungal activity and, following an enzymatic attack, the evaluation of actual permanent damage on different types of paper. In this report we present a combined study based on NMR relaxometry, EPR (Electron Paramagnetic Resonance) spectroscopy, X-Ray powder spectra and chemical analysis. These methods altogether indicate that, in the case of an enzymatic attack by endo glucanase, it is the amorphous fraction of paper to be attacked. In particular, NMR relaxometry is able to reveal extremely mild enzymatic attacks, not observable with any other method.
