The article discusses the World Trade Organization (WTO) centered trade diplomacy of Japan. It states that in marked contrast to its non-confrontational and non-legalistic trade diplomacy Japan has shown significant steps towards legalizing its trade disputes within the WTO. It highlights that Japan has used the rules of the WTO Agreements mainly through increased complainant activities in the dispute-settlement system, to thrawt the U.S. pressures and to challenge its measures outright. It notes that Japan's WTO strategy has helped it to interact with its trade partners on an equal basis.
