This article consists of three parts. Part 1 discusses the Job Content Questionnaire (JCQ), designed to measure scales assessing psychological demands, decision latitude, social support, physical demands, and job insecurity. Part 2 reports the cross-national validity, for men and women, of the JCQ scales in six broadly representative populations from four advanced industrial societies: the United States, Canada, the Netherlands and Japan. JCQ scale means, standard deviations, reliabilities and correlations are compared. Part 3 reviews comparison of the intercountry and interoccupation differences in the scales, discusses specific scales issues and discusses the implications of the study for interpretation of psychosocial job asessment questionnaires.

Dit rapport bevat capita selecta van resultaten van de internationale studie naar strategieën die werkhervatting bevorderen van werknemers met een arbeidshandicap. Aan NIA TNO is gevraagd vooral aandacht te besteden aan resultaten die van belang zijn voor de reïntegratiepraktijk in Nederland. Aan de orde komen de relatie tussen enerzijds de politieke en ambtelijke beleidsdoelen en anderzijds de (wettelijke) reïntegratieregelingen en de uitvoering daarvan, de uitwerking van beleid gericht op bescherming van gehandicapten en van prikkels of sancties als onderdeel van het sociale (verzekerings)beleid en voorts beleid en activiteiten van bedrijven.

This book contains proceedings of the Sixth International Symposium on Human Factors in Organizational Design and Management held in The Hague, The Netherlands, August 19-22, 1998. The Symposium was sponsored jointly by the International Ergonomics Society, the Dutch Ergonomics Society, NIA TNO and The Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment. The book contains the next sections: (I) Organizational design (network of organizations, teamwork, total quality management, organizational learning, management issues, healthy work, management of human settlements); (II) Design for manufacturing; (III) Product/production design (production system, product design); (IV) Information and communication technology. ICT and organizational learning; (V) Workplace and machine design (health, participation and workplaces); (VI) Job task design (managerial aspects, health); (VII) Training and coaching (organizational learning, ergonomics and learning)

Volgens deskundigen worden drie ontwikkelingen voor ontwerpers steeds belangrijker: het ontwerpen in teams, het participatief ontwerpen en het ontwerpen rekening houdend met de menselijke gevoelens. Klanten worden op deze wijze al gebruikers voordat het product gereed is. In augustus 1998 kwamen 135 deskundigen bijeen in Den Haag om over Human Factors in Organizational Design and Management te spreken. Dit ODAM congres was georganiseerd door de Nederlandse Vereniging voor Ergonomie, de International Ergonomics Association en NIA TNO. Twintig presentaties betroffen 'productontwikkeling' en hadden gemeen dat het product in een vroeg stadium van ontwikkeling al 'gebruikt' wordt. In dit artikel worden de hoofdpunten uit deze presentaties beschreven.

Dit was de eerste impuls tot het oprichten van de FACTS-databank van TNO in de loop van 1980. FACTS bevat informatie die inzicht geeft in de oorzaak, de aard en de gevolgen van ongevallen met gevaarlijke stoffen in Nederland en de rest van de wereld. Het gaat met name om ongevallen die zijn gebeurd tijdens industriële activiteiten. Het inventariseert daarbij niet alleen de feiten, maar interpreteert ze ook. Het geeft inzicht in oorzaak en gevolg relaties en biedt een overzicht van omstandigheden en genomen maatregelen. In dit artikel wordt nader ingegaan op de informatie, de opbouw en de toepassingen van deze databank.

Organisation Development (OD) is an extraordinarly complex phenomenon of human society in which in the last few years there have been some interesting developments. Without making any claim to completeness the following topics would seem to have been a focus of interest in recent research on the subject: integration of several approaches to OD; greater emphasis on the use of theories; the complexity of the change process and automation of work and administrative processes. Allegro and Bruining outline two main approaches to OD: the process and the task structural approach. Steensma, Allegro and Knip discuss two OD principles: 1) clarifying norms and values in so far as they play a role in planning the change process 2) making use of explicitly stated theories, adapted to the problems to be dealt with. In the paper by Den Hartog and Van Amstel a project in a central government organisation is discussed. In the last paper, Van der Vlist shows how Leavitt's model of organisations can be used to understand why organisations are generally slow when it comes to change.
