The article examines how the performance of former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher and former Norwegian prime minister Gro Harlem Brundtland reflects the competence of female politicians. The author comments on the limited participation of women in parliamentary politics in Western democracies and notes that women were often restricted to activity in fields such as health, education and social work. Feminism, improved education for women and the advancement of the welfare society increased the role of women in politics. The author discusses Thatcher and Brundtland's leadership styles and economic, social and foreign policies and suggests they changed perceptions regarding the competence of women politicians.
