Periodic assessments of reference condition wetlands are needed to determine changes over time; however, they are rarely conducted. The vegetation from past assessments, 1998 to 2004, was compared to 2016 assessments of 12 reference wetlands in the Missouri Coteau sub-ecoregion of the Prairie Pothole Region using nonmetric multidimensional scaling and permutational multivariate analysis of variance. Analyses indicated the vegetation in the 2016 assessments trended away from the abundance of native highly conservative species as found during the 1998 to 2004 assessments. Instead, the 2016 plant communities trended towards lower abundance of the same native conservative species and higher abundance of non-native species. Both the average coefficient of conservatism values and floristic quality index values significantly declined, supporting the interpretation that reference wetlands were moving towards plant communities with lower abundance of highly conservative species. The assumption that reference wetlands in the Prairie Pothole Region will change little over time is challenged by these findings. Vegetation in refence wetlands within the Prairie Pothole Region is no longer resembles past monitoring and is trending towards a distinct vegetation composition. Future management will need to consider the potential of reference wetlands' vegetation composition moving away from a historic baseline and how this may impact future wetland assessment, especially when vegetation is compared to reference conditions., (© 2023. Plant communities in North American prairie pothole wetlands vary depending on hydrology, salinity, and anthropogenic disturbance in and around the wetland. We assessed prairie pothole conditions on United States Fish and Wildlife Service fee-title lands in North Dakota and South Dakota to improve our understanding of current conditions and plant community composition. Species-level data were collected at 200 randomly chosen temporary and seasonal wetland sites located on native prairie remnants (n = 48) and previously cultivated lands that were reseeded into perennial grassland (n = 152). The majority of species surveyed appeared infrequently and were low in relative cover. The four most frequently observed species were introduced invasive species common to the Prairie Pothole Region of North America. Our results suggested relative cover of a few invasive species (i.e., Bromus inermis Leyss., Phalaris arundinacea L., and Typha ×glauca Godr. (pro sp.) [angustifolia or domingensis × latifolia]) affect patterns of plant community composition. Wetlands in native and reseeded grasslands possessed distinct plant community composition related to invasive species' relative cover. Invasive species continue to be prevalent throughout the region and pose a major threat to biological diversity, even in protected native prairie remnants. Despite efforts to convert past agricultural land into biologically diverse, productive ecosystems, invasive species continue to dominate these landscapes and are becoming prominent in prairie potholes located in native areas. Wetland ecosystems perform a multitude of services valued by society and provide critical habitat for migratory birds and other wildlife. Despite their importance, wetlands have been lost to different local, regional, and global drivers. Remaining wetlands are extremely sensitive to changing temperature and precipitation regimes. Management of grassland areas in wetland catchments may be an effective strategy for counteracting potentially negative impacts of climate change on wetlands. Our objective was to estimate the effects of climate changes on wetland hydrology, and to explore strategies for increasing surface-water inputs to wetlands. We coupled a field study with process-based simulation modeling of wetland-water levels. We found that climate change could decrease the number of wetlands that hold ponded water during the waterfowl breeding season by 14% under a hot wet scenario or 29% under a hot dry scenario if no upland-management actions were taken. Upland burning reduced pond losses to 9% (hot wet) and 26% (hot dry). Upland grazing resulted in the smallest loss of ponded wetlands, 6% loss under the hot-and-wet scenario and 22% loss under the hot-and-dry scenario. Overall, water inputs could be increased by either burning or grazing of upland vegetation thereby reducing pond losses during the waterfowl breeding season. While field results suggest that both grazing and burning can reduce the vegetative structure that could lead to increases in runoff in grassland catchments, our model simulations indicated that additional actions may be needed for managers to minimize future meteorologically driven water losses. Abstract: The Index of Plant Community Integrity (IPCI) was developed to assess wetland plant communities in the Prairie Pothole Region. The IPCI evaluates the condition of wetland plant communities based on disturbance level and multiple community attributes. However, the index was developed for seasonal wetlands from limited spatial and temporal data. We tested the index for seasonal wetlands and developed an index for temporary and semi-permanent wetlands by evaluating vegetative composition of wetlands throughout the Northern Glaciated Plains and Northwestern Glaciated Plains Ecoregions of South Dakota, North Dakota, and Montana. In 2003 and 2004, we selected wetlands based on classification and type of disturbance, ranging from little disturbance (native rangeland) to heavily disturbed (cropland). We analyzed the data using the IPCI vegetation metrics developed for seasonal wetlands, and further analyzed using nonmetric multidimensional scaling and cluster analyses. All vegetation metrics tested were significant in indicating disturbance level. Based on data analysis, five biologically significant groups related to intensity of disturbance (Very good, Good, Fair, Poor, and Very poor) were determined for seasonal wetlands, and three condition classes (Good, Fair, and Poor) for temporary and semi-permanent wetlands. Score ranges were assigned to the metrics according to the determined classes. Using the IPCI method, wetlands throughout the Northern and Northwestern Glaciated Plains of South Dakota, North Dakota, and Montana may be placed into disturbance classes. This data can then be used for ecological purposes and mitigation needs such as monitoring trends on reclaimed or restored wetlands, regional inventories, and for evaluation of ecological functions. We developed an Index of Plant Community Integrity (IPCI) for quantitatively assessing the quality of seasonal wetland plant communities. In 1998 and 1999, we sampled the plant communities of 46 seasonal wetlands in the Prairie Pothole Region (PPR) of central North Dakota, USA. We selected wetlands that represented a range of disturbance from well-managed native rangeland to heavily disturbed cropland. We delineated plant data into metrics of the data set (e.g. species richness, percentage of introduced and annual plants) and analyzed these metrics using principal components (PCs) and cluster analyses. Through analyses, five quality classes (Very good, Good, Fair, Poor, and Very poor) were determined. We then assigned ranges and scores for each metric based on the statistical analyses. By using this classification system, the plant communities of additional seasonal wetlands in the PPR can now be assessed and placed in quality classes for mitigation or ecological purposes, such as tracking the improvement of restored or reclaimed wetlands, wildlife habitat evaluation, hydrogeomorphic (HGM) assessment, and evaluation of other ecological functions.
