Abstract

Research on magnetic confinement of high-temperature plasmas has the ultimate goal of harnessing nuclear fusion for the production of electricity. Although the tokamak1 is the leading toroidal magnetic-confinement concept, it is not without shortcomings and the fusion community has therefore also pursued alternative concepts such as the stellarator. Unlike axisymmetric tokamaks, stellarators possess a three-dimensional (3D) magnetic field geometry. The availability of this additional dimension opens up an extensive configuration space for computational optimization of both the field geometry itself and the current-carrying coils that produce it. Such an optimization was undertaken in designing Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X)2, a large helical-axis advanced stellarator (HELIAS), which began operation in 2015 at Greifswald, Germany. A major drawback of 3D magnetic field geometry, however, is that it introduces a strong temperature dependence into the stellarator’s non-turbulent ‘neoclassical’ energy transport. Indeed, such energy losses will become prohibitive in high-temperature reactor plasmas unless a strong reduction of the geometrical factor associated with this transport can be achieved; such a reduction was therefore a principal goal of the design of W7-X. In spite of the modest heating power currently available, W7-X has already been able to achieve high-temperature plasma conditions during its 2017 and 2018 experimental campaigns, producing record values of the fusion triple product for such stellarator plasmas3,4. The triple product of plasma density, ion temperature and energy confinement time is used in fusion research as a figure of merit, as it must attain a certain threshold value before net-energy-producing operation of a reactor becomes possible1,5. Here we demonstrate that such record values provide evidence for reduced neoclassical energy transport in W7-X, as the plasma profiles that produced these results could not have been obtained in stellarators lacking a comparably high level of neoclassical optimization., Previously documented record values of the fusion triple product in the stellarator Wendelstein 7-X are shown to be evidence for reduced neoclassical energy transport in this optimized device.

Abstract

The two leading concepts for confining high-temperature fusion plasmas are the tokamak and the stellarator. Tokamaks are rotationally symmetric and use a large plasma current to achieve confinement, whereas stellarators are non-axisymmetric and employ three-dimensionally shaped magnetic field coils to twist the field and confine the plasma. As a result, the magnetic field of a stellarator needs to be carefully designed to minimize the collisional transport arising from poorly confined particle orbits, which would otherwise cause excessive power losses at high plasma temperatures. In addition, this type of transport leads to the appearance of a net toroidal plasma current, the so-called bootstrap current. Here, we analyse results from the first experimental campaign of the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator, showing that its magnetic-field design allows good control of bootstrap currents and collisional transport. The energy confinement time is among the best ever achieved in stellarators, both in absolute figures (τE > 100 ms) and relative to the stellarator confinement scaling. The bootstrap current responds as predicted to changes in the magnetic mirror ratio. These initial experiments confirm several theoretically predicted properties of Wendelstein 7-X plasmas, and already indicate consistency with optimization measures. Results from the first experimental campaign of the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator demonstrate that its magnetic-field design grants good control of parasitic plasma currents, leading to long energy confinement times.

Abstract

Wendelstein 7-X is the first comprehensively optimized stellarator aiming at good confinement with plasma parameters relevant to a future stellarator power plant. Plasma operation started in 2015 using a limiter configuration. After installing an uncooled magnetic island divertor, extending the energy limit from 4 to 80 MJ, operation continued in 2017. For this phase, the electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) capability was extended to 7 MW, and hydrogen pellet injection was implemented. The enhancements resulted in the highest triple product (6.5 × 1019 keV m-3 s) achieved in a stellarator until now. Plasma conditions [Te(0) ≈ Ti(0) ≈ 3.8 keV, τE > 200 ms] already were in the stellarator reactor-relevant ion-root plasma transport regime. Stable operation above the 2nd harmonic ECRH X-mode cutoff was demonstrated, which is instrumental for achieving high plasma densities in Wendelstein 7-X. Further important developments include the confirmation of low intrinsic error fields, the observation of current-drive induced instabilities, and first fast ion heating and confinement experiments. The efficacy of the magnetic island divertor was instrumental in achieving high performance in Wendelstein 7-X. Symmetrization of the heat loads between the ten divertor modules could be achieved by external resonant magnetic fields. Full divertor power detachment facilitated the extension of high power plasmas significantly beyond the energy limit of 80 MJ.

Abstract: The Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) modular stellarator is in the assembly phase at the Max-Planck-Institut für Plasmaphysik in Greifswald, Germany. The design of the “basic machine”, i.e. without in-vessel components, diagnostics and periphery, is largely completed, structural parameters such as bolt preload, initial conditions for contact elements, etc. are defined, and most of the components are manufactured and partly assembled. Therefore, the focus of structural analysis was shifted towards fast analyses of non-conformities, changes in the assembly procedure, and exploration of operational limits. Assembly-related work is expected to continue until commissioning of the machine, however, with decreasing intensity. In parallel the analysis requirements for in-vessel components, diagnostics and periphery will increase. This paper focuses on the most remarkable results, on special problems which had to be solved, on strategic issues like parameterization, complex finite element model structuring and benchmarking with alternative models in different codes, on assumptions of reasonable safety margins and expected tolerances, and on confirmation of analysis results by tests. Finally it highlights some lessons learned so far, which might be relevant also for other large fusion machines, and gives an outlook on future work. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: At the Max-Planck-Institut fuer Plasmaphysik (IPP) a reference design is being created of an upgraded five-periodic HELIAS type stellarator reactor which evolves from Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) by scaling of the coil centre line geometries by a factor of four. This reactor type was extensively investigated at IPP with regard to physical characteristics and to some extent also to engineering issues. The upgrade concerns an increase of the induction at the plasma axis and correspondingly at the superconductor. The aim is to develop the reactor concept to a stage and such detail that major engineering problems are unveiled, and relevant comparisons with other concepts, including tokamaks, can be drawn in view of upcoming decisions concerning a DEMO reactor. Even though progress in plasma physics, and in particular future results of W7-X and other machines – particularly of ITER – will probably lead to somewhat different coil shapes, no principal changes of the reference design are expected. In this paper the option of a roll-formed square coil cable jacket is investigated. Detailed structural FE analysis of the coil winding pack demonstrates the feasibility of such a conductor which appears to be the most economical option. It also allows sufficient space for a cable current density very similar to that of the ITER TF coil with a similar overall winding pack cross section of ≈0.5m2. Already existing Nb3Sn conductors could thus be safely applied in such a HELIAS reactor. Obvious progress of superconductor technology, particularly concerning Nb3Al, will be beneficial concerning savings of conductor material, ease of manufacture, higher operation temperature, etc. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

• The function of the panels is to protect the wall of the plasma vessel behind the pumping gap between the vertical and horizontal divertor plates against radiative heat loads. • New water cooled pumping gap panels have been designed for the steady state operation OP2 of the stellarator Wendelstein 7‐X. • A panel prototype has been cycled in the SIRHEX facility of KIT at about 100 kW/m² and water cooling conditions: Tin=20 °C, P = 0.35 MPa, flow rate = 0,13 and 0,26 kg/s. • The deposited heat load was measured by calorimetry and thermocouples were installed at different location. • A good agreement was found between calculations and test results, and thus the thermohydraulic panel design was well validated. For the upcoming long pulse operation phase 2 "OP2" of Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X), new water cooled non planar stainless steel panels have been manufactured to protect the wall of the plasma vessel behind the divertor pumping gap. Such a panel is made of a machined ground plate with channels which are covered by likewise machined sheets. The latter are electron-beam welded to the ground plates. There are 60 panels of 7 different types which are designed to remove a stationary heat flux of up to 100 kW/m². The specified water cooling conditions are: 2.5 MPa inlet pressure, 30 °C inlet temperature, and 0.27 ℓ/s flow rate. A panel prototype has been manufactured to validate the design and manufacturing process. In order to verify the thermo-hydraulic calculations performed with ANSYS® CFX, a thermal loading test on the prototype was carried out in the SIRHEX test facility at KIT. The loaded surface of the prototype (about 0.11 m²) was black-finished, and thermocouples were installed at different positions. The prototype was placed in the vacuum tank and heated by an array of six infrared lamps (400 V, max. 16 kW per lamp). The deposited load of up to about 100 kW/m² was measured by calorimetry. The paper describes the loading experiment of the panel, and its results. The “pentagonal” magnet system of the machine encompasses 50 non-planar and 20 planar superconducting coils with sophisticated support structure. Structural reliability of components as well as resulting deformations and displacements during various modes of operation have to be considered not only for the magnet system but also throughout the whole cryostat whose main components are the plasma vessel, outer vessel, ports, and thermal insulation. A reliable prediction of the W7-X structural behaviour is only possible by employing complex finite element (FE) simulations with a hierarchical set of FE models. A special strategy has been developed and implemented for the task. The design is basically completed, main parameters are defined, and most of the W7-X components are manufactured. Therefore, the focus in the analysis is being shifted to the creation of parametric FE models which allow performing fast analyses of possible non-conformities, changes in the assembly procedure, and future exploration of operational limits. W7-X is in an advanced state of construction and has entered the assembly phase at the Max-Planck-Institute für Plasmaphysik (IPP) in Greifswald, Germany. The W7-X “pentagonal” basic magnet system is highly sensitive to parameter variations; the cryostat comprises two vessels, which are interconnected elastically by 299 ports. The strategy of the structural analysis for this complex mechanical system is being developed and implemented with the ultimate goal to create a tree of numerical models which reliably predict the stellarator structural behaviour. Abstract: The purpose of the Wendelstein 7-X cryostat is to thermally insulate the magnet system (operating at cryo-temperature) by high vacuum and super insulation, to provide and enclose the working space for the plasma, and to serve as a bearing structure for the system components that have to be placed in the immediate vicinity of the plasma, such as the first wall, the divertor and some of the diagnostic devices. Concerning structural components only, the cryostat is composed of the plasma vessel, the outer vessel and the ports that interconnect the vessels. The cryostat together with the machine base comprises the so called cryostat system, and this is the system that is under consideration in this paper. Due to both the geometrical complexity and the complexity of loading, individual subsystems of the cryostat system could not be analyzed separately. For that reason, a global finite element model of the whole cryostat system had to be created. Abstract

We present recent highlights from the most recent operation phases of Wendelstein 7-X, the most advanced stellarator in the world. Stable detachment with good particle exhaust, low impurity content, and energy confinement times exceeding 100 ms, have been maintained for tens of seconds. Pellet fueling allows for plasma phases with reduced ion-temperature-gradient turbulence, and during such phases, the overall confinement is so good (energy confinement times often exceeding 200 ms) that the attained density and temperature profiles would not have been possible in less optimized devices, since they would have had neoclassical transport losses exceeding the heating applied in W7-X. This provides proof that the reduction of neoclassical transport through magnetic field optimization is successful. W7-X plasmas generally show good impurity screening and high plasma purity, but there is evidence of longer impurity confinement times during turbulence-suppressed phases. 11. Tribological performance of MoS2 coatings in liquid helium and at high loads

Abstract

Abstract: The main part of a narrow support element (NSE) of the W7-X superconducting coil system is an aluminium bronze pad, PVD coated on its spherical surface with MoS2, which slides against the flat surface of the stainless steel coil housing, coated with MoS2 spray. The operational requirements of the NSEs are: vacuum of p <10−6 mbar, temperature T ∼4K, maximum load P ∼1500kN, typical displacement ≤5mm, smooth sliding and no stick-slip events. The paper describes test results obtained with a downscaled NSE at T =4.2 and 77K. During the test the NSEs were submerged in liquid helium and nitrogen, respectively. Whereas the LN2 test ran smoothly for up to ∼15,000 cycles, the test in LHe showed stick-slip from the very first cycle. The stick-slip disappeared after ∼50 cycles. Post mortem analysis of the tested parts revealed that in case of LHe the sprayed MoS2 film was removed during the first 30–100 cycles by blistering and flaking. The reason for the loss of adhesion at LHe temperature is not known, several possible causes are under discussion. Further experiments under vacuum and at T ∼4K are being prepared which are expected to help in clarifying the issue. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

Abstract: The narrow support elements (NSEs) between the casings of the superconducting coils of the Wendelstein 7-X magnet system consist of pads made of Al–bronze, which can slide and tilt against stainless-steel counter-faces. Static friction peaks or stick–slip events during sliding may cause disturbances to the magnet system and have to be avoided. Because the NSEs are operated at a temperature of ≈4K and in vacuum at a residual pressure of p <10−6 mbar, only solid lubricants, in particular MoS2, are applicable. Therefore, the static and dynamic friction behaviour of MoS2-coatings was tested in liquid helium at 4.2K and in vacuum at room temperature under high contact pressures and very low sliding velocities. In model tests with small Al–bronze pins, sliding in reciprocating motion against a PVD–MoS2-coating on a steel substrate, very stable sliding behaviour without coating failure, and a friction coefficient below 0.1 was observed. However, tests with downscaled samples in original geometry showed stable sliding in liquid nitrogen, but unexpected stick–slip behaviour in liquid helium at 4.2K. For further investigations and because in actual service the NSEs are not immersed into a liquid cryogen, tests under vacuum at low temperatures are being prepared. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
