Abstract

Pulsed injections of boron carbide granules into Wendelstein 7-X stellarator (W7-X) plasmas transiently increase the plasma stored energy and core ion temperatures above the reference W7-X experimental programs by up to 30%. In a series of 4 MW electron cyclotron resonance heating experiments, the PPPL Probe Mounted Powder Injector provided 50 ms bursts of 100 μm granules every 350 ms at estimated quantities ranging from approximately 1 mg/pulse to over 30 mg/pulse. For each injection, the stored energy was observed to initially drop and the radiated power transiently increased, while the radial electron density profile rose at the edge as material was assimilated. Once the injected boron carbide was fully absorbed, the density rise transitioned to the core while the stored energy increased above the previous baseline level by an amount linearly correlated with the injection quantity. During the injection, the ion temperature gradient steepened with peak core ion temperatures observed to increase from a nominal 1.7 keV to over 2.6 keV for the largest injection amounts. Enhanced performance is accompanied by a reversal of the radial electric field at ρ < 0.3, indicating that the core transport has switched to the ion root. These observations are suggestive of a change in transport and provide further evidence that externally induced profile modifications provide a possible path to enhanced W7-X performance metrics.I. Abstract

Research on magnetic confinement of high-temperature plasmas has the ultimate goal of harnessing nuclear fusion for the production of electricity. Although the tokamak1 is the leading toroidal magnetic-confinement concept, it is not without shortcomings and the fusion community has therefore also pursued alternative concepts such as the stellarator. Unlike axisymmetric tokamaks, stellarators possess a three-dimensional (3D) magnetic field geometry. The availability of this additional dimension opens up an extensive configuration space for computational optimization of both the field geometry itself and the current-carrying coils that produce it. Such an optimization was undertaken in designing Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X)2, a large helical-axis advanced stellarator (HELIAS), which began operation in 2015 at Greifswald, Germany. A major drawback of 3D magnetic field geometry, however, is that it introduces a strong temperature dependence into the stellarator’s non-turbulent ‘neoclassical’ energy transport. Indeed, such energy losses will become prohibitive in high-temperature reactor plasmas unless a strong reduction of the geometrical factor associated with this transport can be achieved; such a reduction was therefore a principal goal of the design of W7-X. In spite of the modest heating power currently available, W7-X has already been able to achieve high-temperature plasma conditions during its 2017 and 2018 experimental campaigns, producing record values of the fusion triple product for such stellarator plasmas3,4. The triple product of plasma density, ion temperature and energy confinement time is used in fusion research as a figure of merit, as it must attain a certain threshold value before net-energy-producing operation of a reactor becomes possible1,5. Here we demonstrate that such record values provide evidence for reduced neoclassical energy transport in W7-X, as the plasma profiles that produced these results could not have been obtained in stellarators lacking a comparably high level of neoclassical optimization., Previously documented record values of the fusion triple product in the stellarator Wendelstein 7-X are shown to be evidence for reduced neoclassical energy transport in this optimized device.

Abstract

The perpendicular velocity (v ⊥) of turbulence is measured by means of a hopping poloidal correlation reflectometer diagnostic for the study of turbulence rotation in the plasma edge region in Wendelstein 7-X. An elliptic approximation (EA) model is applied for calculating the space-time correlation in the edge region. The v ⊥ profile is compared in the high-ι (edge ι ≈ 1.2) and limiter (edge ι < 1) configurations. It is found that the v ⊥ gradient is inversely proportional to the heating power in the high-ι configuration, which could be attributed to the turbulence activities in the plasma edge. In the limiter configuration, the v ⊥ spike is observed near the island boundary, which is corresponded to the plasma current crash. In the standard configuration (edge ι ≈ 1), the v ⊥ profile in the island region distributes as a function of the perpendicular separation. With increasing of the plasma current, the island enlarges the size as is referred from the v ⊥ scope, accompanying with steepening of the v ⊥ gradient at the boundary of the island.

Abstract

The two leading concepts for confining high-temperature fusion plasmas are the tokamak and the stellarator. Tokamaks are rotationally symmetric and use a large plasma current to achieve confinement, whereas stellarators are non-axisymmetric and employ three-dimensionally shaped magnetic field coils to twist the field and confine the plasma. As a result, the magnetic field of a stellarator needs to be carefully designed to minimize the collisional transport arising from poorly confined particle orbits, which would otherwise cause excessive power losses at high plasma temperatures. In addition, this type of transport leads to the appearance of a net toroidal plasma current, the so-called bootstrap current. Here, we analyse results from the first experimental campaign of the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator, showing that its magnetic-field design allows good control of bootstrap currents and collisional transport. The energy confinement time is among the best ever achieved in stellarators, both in absolute figures (τE > 100 ms) and relative to the stellarator confinement scaling. The bootstrap current responds as predicted to changes in the magnetic mirror ratio. These initial experiments confirm several theoretically predicted properties of Wendelstein 7-X plasmas, and already indicate consistency with optimization measures. Results from the first experimental campaign of the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator demonstrate that its magnetic-field design grants good control of parasitic plasma currents, leading to long energy confinement times.

Abstract

Fusion energy research has in the past 40 years focused primarily on the tokamak concept, but recent advances in plasma theory and computational power have led to renewed interest in stellarators. The largest and most sophisticated stellarator in the world, Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X), has just started operation, with the aim to show that the earlier weaknesses of this concept have been addressed successfully, and that the intrinsic advantages of the concept persist, also at plasma parameters approaching those of a future fusion power plant. Here we show the first physics results, obtained before plasma operation: that the carefully tailored topology of nested magnetic surfaces needed for good confinement is realized, and that the measured deviations are smaller than one part in 100,000. This is a significant step forward in stellarator research, since it shows that the complicated and delicate magnetic topology can be created and verified with the required accuracy., Early stellarator designs suffered from high particle losses, an issue that can be addressed by optimization of the coils. Here the authors measure the magnetic field lines in the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator, confirming that the complicated design of the superconducting coils has been realized successfully.

Abstract

Wendelstein 7-X is the first comprehensively optimized stellarator aiming at good confinement with plasma parameters relevant to a future stellarator power plant. Plasma operation started in 2015 using a limiter configuration. After installing an uncooled magnetic island divertor, extending the energy limit from 4 to 80 MJ, operation continued in 2017. For this phase, the electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) capability was extended to 7 MW, and hydrogen pellet injection was implemented. The enhancements resulted in the highest triple product (6.5 × 1019 keV m-3 s) achieved in a stellarator until now. Plasma conditions [Te(0) ≈ Ti(0) ≈ 3.8 keV, τE > 200 ms] already were in the stellarator reactor-relevant ion-root plasma transport regime. Stable operation above the 2nd harmonic ECRH X-mode cutoff was demonstrated, which is instrumental for achieving high plasma densities in Wendelstein 7-X. Further important developments include the confirmation of low intrinsic error fields, the observation of current-drive induced instabilities, and first fast ion heating and confinement experiments. The efficacy of the magnetic island divertor was instrumental in achieving high performance in Wendelstein 7-X. Symmetrization of the heat loads between the ten divertor modules could be achieved by external resonant magnetic fields. Full divertor power detachment facilitated the extension of high power plasmas significantly beyond the energy limit of 80 MJ.

Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) is a modular advanced stellarator, which successfully went into operation in December 2015 at the Max-Planck-Institut für Plasmaphysik in Greifswald, Germany, and continued to thrive at the experimental campaign with the first divertor phase in August-December 2017. The nested magnetic surfaces in W7-X are created by a system of 3-D toroidally discrete coils, providing both toroidal and poloidal field components, and designed with the aim to create optimum equilibrium properties. The optimization criteria included the high quality of vacuum magnetic surfaces, good finite beta equilibrium and MHD-stability properties as well as a substantial reduction of the neoclassical transport and bootstrap current in comparison to classical stellarators. Equilibrium calculations, devoted to the analysis of the experiment programs dedicated to measure the bootstrap current, were performed with help of the Variational Moments Equilibrium Code, available as Wendelstein 7-X web service. Pressure profiles based on experimental data served as an input for calculations. The mapping of measurements using pre-calculated equilibria for different beta values has been analyzed. A comparison with reconstruction results obtained by means of the Minerva Framework, considering only experimental data of magnetics measurements, and the V3FIT code is presented. Abstract

Consistent physics and engineering models are required for many use cases at Wendelstein 7-X. Web service technology is used to provide convenient access to common software components and experiment data. The usage of standard web protocols allows the integration in client software written in any programming language. This leads to a better reusability of expert codes and experiment data by a large international team. At W7-X, web services provide common functions such as Biot–Savart calculations and magnetic field line tracing. Further services provide access to databases for diagnostic data or machine models. A new web service was implemented for the creation of 3D magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equilibrium calculations and a user-friendly access to the results. Consistent interface definitions allow an orchestration of the W7-X web services by user code, as well as a seamless integration into a data analysis framework. Abstract

Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) is a modular advanced stellarator with a magnetic field optimized for good plasma confinement and stability, which went into operation in December 2015 at the Max-Planck-Institut für Plasmaphysik in Greifswald, Germany. The magnet system of W7-X consists of 70 superconducting coils with as-built-shapes and positions which deviate from the designed ones due to manufacturing and positioning tolerances as well as due to deformations under different kinds of loads. Step-by-step evaluation of the magnet system geometry during the machine construction included measurements of the winding pack geometry characterizing deviations of each coil filament caused by the fabrication process and the tracking of coil positions during main assembly steps. In addition finite element calculations were performed with help of the 360° ANSYS Global Model (a finite element model, representing the whole W7-X magnet system, including all superconducting coils and their support structure) in order to define possible coil deformations under the dead-weight, cool-down and electromagnetic loads in different operation regimes. Abstract: Wendelstein 7-X, currently under construction at the Max-Planck-Institut für Plasmaphysik in Greifswald, Germany, is a modular advanced stellarator, combining the modular coil concept with optimised properties of the plasma. The magnet system of the machine consists of 50 non-planar and 20 planar superconducting coils which are arranged in five identical modules, forming a toroidal five-fold symmetric system. The majority of operational magnetic configurations will have rotational transform ι/2π =1 at the boundary. Such configurations are very sensitive to symmetry breaking perturbations, which are the consequence of imprecisely manufactured coils or assembly errors. To date, all 70 coils have been fabricated, and the first two half-modules of the machine have been assembled. The comparative analysis of manufactured winding packs and estimates of the corresponding level of magnetic field perturbation are presented. The dependency of the error fields on the coil assembly sequence is considered, as well as the impact of the first assembly errors. The influence of different construction uncertainties is discussed, and measures to minimise the magnetic field perturbation are suggested. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Asymmetric field errors can cause magnetic islands with a non-inherent periodicity which are not tolerable. During the fabrication and assembly of the magnet system a precise geometrical survey allows to estimate the field errors and to make some correction by a proper adjustment of the entire modules. Abstract

Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) is currently under commissioning in preparation for its initial plasma operation phase, operation phase 1.1 (OP1.1). This first phase serves primarily to provide an integral commissioning of all major systems needed for plasma operation, as well as systems, such as diagnostics, that need plasma operation to verify their foreseen functions. In OP1.1, W7-X will have a reduced set of in-vessel components. In particular, five graphite limiter stripes replace the later foreseen divertor. This paper describes the expected machine capabilities in OP1.1, as well as a selection of physics topics that can be addressed in OP1.1, despite the simplified configuration and the reduced machine capabilities. Physics topics include the verification and adjustment of the magnetic topology, the testing of the foreseen plasma start-up scenarios and the feed-forward control of plasma density and temperature evolution, as well as more advanced topics such as scrape-off layer (SOL) studies at short connection lengths and transport studies. Plasma operation in OP1.1 will primarily be performed in helium, with a hydrogen plasma phase at the end.

Abstract

We present recent highlights from the most recent operation phases of Wendelstein 7-X, the most advanced stellarator in the world. Stable detachment with good particle exhaust, low impurity content, and energy confinement times exceeding 100 ms, have been maintained for tens of seconds. Pellet fueling allows for plasma phases with reduced ion-temperature-gradient turbulence, and during such phases, the overall confinement is so good (energy confinement times often exceeding 200 ms) that the attained density and temperature profiles would not have been possible in less optimized devices, since they would have had neoclassical transport losses exceeding the heating applied in W7-X. This provides proof that the reduction of neoclassical transport through magnetic field optimization is successful. W7-X plasmas generally show good impurity screening and high plasma purity, but there is evidence of longer impurity confinement times during turbulence-suppressed phases. Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of the Wendelstein 7-X cryostat is to thermally insulate the magnet system (operating at cryo-temperature) by high vacuum and super insulation, to provide and enclose the working space for the plasma, and to serve as a bearing structure for the system components that have to be placed in the immediate vicinity of the plasma, such as the first wall, the divertor and some of the diagnostic devices. Concerning structural components only, the cryostat is composed of the plasma vessel, the outer vessel and the ports that interconnect the vessels. The cryostat together with the machine base comprises the so called cryostat system, and this is the system that is under consideration in this paper. Due to both the geometrical complexity and the complexity of loading, individual subsystems of the cryostat system could not be analyzed separately. For that reason, a global finite element model of the whole cryostat system had to be created. The paper presents an overview of finite element modeling, simulations with ANSYS performed on this system, and the corresponding calculation results. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
