We demonstrate a novel waveguide polarization controller that allows endless transformations from any varying general input polarization state into any varying general output state. The electro-optic controller is implemented in lithium niobate and produces adjustable elliptical birefringence of constant total phase retardation via three independent drive voltages. We show that it allows fast and reset-free automatic polarization control using an entirely analog feedback circuit that derives its error signal from the intensity in the prescribed output polarization. We report a novel wavelength selective coupler based upon grating-assisted forward coupling between two, nonidentical, vertically stacked InGaAsP/InP waveguides. Using a 14.4 μm period to provide phase matching between the asynchronous waveguides, we achieve a filter bandwidth (full width at half maximum) of 65 Å and coupling efficiency of ∼65% with a device length of only 1.0 mm. We have made InGaP/InP waveguides on InP substrates by atmospheric pressure metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy. The introduction of Ga in the cladding layers causes a large relative index change (Δn=0 to >0.18) that can be varied with the Ga concentration (Δn=0.18 with Ga at 5×1019 cm-3), creating strong, low loss (∼1.25 dB/cm) waveguides. In addition some of these structures were doped with Fe, using ferrocene as the Fe doping source. Typical resistivities of 107 Ω cm have been achieved at Fe concentrations of 5×1017 cm-3, allowing electric fields in excess of 10 000 V/cm to be applied to the waveguides. We report the first demonstration of InGaAsP/InP passive waveguide reflection grating filters. Waveguide filters with ∼1.5-μm center wavelength, peak reflectivity >99%, and spectral bandwidths (full width at half-maximum) as narrow as 6 Å and as broad as 130 Å have been achieved. We propose and demonstrate the first Ti:LiNbO3 waveguide-InGaAsP/InP composite cavity laser. Mode locked optical pulses shorter than 22 ps have been generated at repetition rates up to 7.2 GHz by sinusoidally driving the integrated traveling-wave directional coupler switch. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
