Supercontinuum (SC) has opened up possibilities for numerous applications in optical communications, signal processing, metrology, and spectroscopy. Supercontinuum generation (SCG) in the integrated nonlinear platforms has attracted much interest recently, due to its fundamental advantages in terms of complementary metal oxide semiconductor compatibility, low power consumption, compact size, and cost‐effectiveness. In this paper, the latest progress on various types of nanophotonic waveguides for SCG is reviewed. The material properties of silicon, germanium, silicon–germanium alloy, silicon nitride, silica, chalcogenide, III–V materials, lithium niobate, and other materials, which are used as nonlinear media for SCG are discussed. The wavelength‐dependent nonlinear Kerr index, material, and nonlinear loss of the waveguides are taken into account. This review mainly focuses on the SCG resulting from the cubic χ(3) nonlinearity processes pumped by the femtosecond pulse. The recent representative SCG works based on the integrated optical waveguides are summarized, and further classified according to the dispersion characteristics. Furthermore, different types of spectra broadening mechanisms in details according to the classifications are analyzed. Perspectives on the SC spectral coverage, the realization of various dispersion curves, and the novel materials, which are the key aspects of the SCG in nanophotonic waveguides are provided. A method to generate multiple dispersive waves (DWs) with pumping in a normal dispersion regime is proposed. We show flexibility of producing four DWs in a silicon nitride (Si3N4) slot waveguide and explain the underlying dynamics of a four DWs generation process in detail, i.e., DWs emission via the optical wave-breaking phenomenon in an anomalous dispersion regime. Compression of the first anomalous DW results in the subsequent cascade DW generation. Combined with the soliton induced blue-shifted dispersive wave and red-shifted dispersive wave, the spectrum spans from visible to mid-IR with high coherence. The four DWs generation process has agreement with prediction of the phase-matching condition. Overall, this multiple DWs generation method in a Si3N4 waveguide provides the possibility for having an efficient, compact, and coherent mid-IR light source. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we propose an Si3N4/SiO2 horizontal-slot-waveguide-based polarization beam splitter (PBS) with low nonlinearity for on-chip high-power systems. The coupling length ratio between the quasi-TE and quasi-TM modes (LTE/LTM) was optimized to 2 for an efficient polarization splitting. For the single-slot design, the coupling length of the PBS was 281.5 μm, while the extinction ratios (ER) of the quasi-TM and quasi-TE modes were 23.9 dB and 20.8 dB, respectively. Compared to PBS based on the Si3N4 strip waveguide, the coupling length became 22.6% shorter. The proposed PBSs also had a relatively good fabrication tolerance for an ER of >20 dB. For the multi-slot design, the coupling length of the PBS was 290.3 μm, while the corresponding ER of the two polarizations were 24.0 dB and 21.0 dB, respectively. Furthermore, we investigated the tradeoff between the ER and coupling length for the optimized PBSs with single slot or multiple slots. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
