A key to achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals is the sustainable provisioning of clean water and sanitation services. The sustainable management of water resources strengthens resilience, protects livelihoods, fosters economic growth, and contributes to poverty reduction. This paper reviews the challenges faced by Caribbean Small Island Developing States (SIDS) with a focus on water resource management. While the Caribbean region is seemingly blessed with water resources, with more than 90% of Caribbean residents having access to improved water, it faces challenges due to inefficient management and diverse geographical realities, creating spatial disparities. Furthermore, economic and physical scarcity coexist with some islands lacking proper infrastructure and others nearing the exhaustion of natural freshwater reserves. Climate change intensifies these issues through variable precipitation patterns and extreme weather events. Additionally, the region's dependence on tourism and susceptibility to environmental pressures necessitates a focus on targets related to SDGs 1 and 8. To address increasing water stress within the region, it is becoming increasingly urgent to identify root causes and develop targeted solutions that consider socioeconomic and environmental factors. The promotion of Integrated Water Resource Management is a key strategy for encouraging increased investment in climate-resilient infrastructure and fostering sustainable financing practices. Water scarcity, a challenge expected to worsen with climate change, significantly hinders native plant community restoration. Enhancing seed‐based restoration requires methods to increase the water availability for seeds and seedlings. Surfactants and superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) can improve soil water‐holding capacity and infiltration, but their use in seed enhancements remains underexplored. We investigated whether pellets containing surfactants or SAPs could improve seedling emergence of two native species (Rytidosperma caespitosum and Chrysocephalum apiculatum) common in temperate grasslands in south‐eastern Australia under different watering treatments. We used a randomized block design with five watering treatments to simulate predicted changes in precipitation for south‐eastern Australia: ambient, two reducing overall water volume, and two reducing watering frequency while increasing watering volume to maintain ambient treatment water volume. We explored four enhanced pellets (two containing surfactants and two containing SAPs) and non‐pelleted seeds. Our results showed that watering events with larger volumes but reduced frequency increased seedling emergence. Under these conditions, block co‐polymer surfactants further increased seedling emergence of C. apiculatum, while synthetic SAP pellets promoted emergence of R. caespitosum. Block co‐polymer surfactants decreased R. caespitosum emergence, and both SAPs reduced C. apiculatum emergence under reduced watering frequency. A 50% reduction in overall water volume significantly reduced seedling emergence for both species, regardless of seed enhancement. These findings suggest that surfactants and SAP pellets can improve the success of seed‐based restoration under ambient conditions and when rainfall events are larger in volume but reduced in frequency, but not when the overall volume of rainfall is reduced. The South-to-North Water Diversion Project in China is the world's largest water transfer project, aiming to address water shortages in northern China by channeling water from the water-rich southern regions. Water resources in Tianjin have long been in severe deficit, with excessive groundwater extraction causing significant surface subsidence, negatively impacting urban infrastructure and economic development. As a result, Tianjin has become a key beneficiary of this water diversion project. To investigate the current situation of surface subsidence, we obtained the vertical displacement time series from 21 GNSS stations across Tianjin from 2011 to 2021 and analyzed overall subsidence changes and rehabilitation status. Results indicate that no clear surface subsidence was observed in the northern regions of Tianjin due to groundwater extraction mainly in unconfined aquifers. The southwestern region experienced the most significant surface subsidence due to overexploitation of deep groundwater, with peak cumulative subsidence exceeding 600 mm during the study period. The central, eastern, and southeastern coastal regions also faced severe surface subsidence with cumulative amounts ranging from 100 mm to 400 mm. The alleviation of subsidence predominantly benefits from continuous water supply from the South to North Water Diversion Project, which resulted in most stations significantly slowing down or even stabilizing their settlement rates after 2018. Therefore, the South-to-North Water Diversion Project plays a crucial role in addressing the persistent water resource shortage and mitigating long-term surface subsidence in Tianjin by ensuring a continuous water supply and significantly reducing the need for groundwater extraction. Our findings indicate positive measures, such as water diversion projects and water management policies, can serve as valuable references for other regions around the world facing similar water scarcity and groundwater overexploitation. With the increasing shortage of water resources and the aggravation of water pollution, solar-driven interfacial steam generation (SISG) technology has garnered considerable attention because of its low energy consumption, simple operation, and environmental friendliness. The popular multi-layer SISG evaporator is composed of two basic structures: a photothermal layer and a support layer. Herein, the support layer underlies the photothermal layer and carries out thermal management, supports the photothermal layer, and transports water to the evaporation interface to improve the stability of the evaporator. While most research focuses on the photothermal layer, the support layer is typically viewed as a supporting object for the photothermal layer. This review focuses on the support layer, which is relatively neglected in evaporator development. It summarizes existing progress in the field of multi-layer interface evaporators, based on various polymers and biomaterials, along with their advantages and disadvantages. Specifically, mainly polymer-based support layers are reviewed, including polymer foams, gels, and their corresponding functional materials, while biomaterial support layers, including natural plants, carbonized biomaterials, and other innovation biomaterials are not. Additionally, the corresponding structure design strategies for the support layer were also involved. It was found that the selection and optimal design of the substrate also played an important role in the efficient operation of the whole steam generation system. Their evolution and refinement are vital for advancing the sustainability and effectiveness of interfacial evaporation technology. The corresponding potential future research direction and application prospects of support layer materials are carefully presented to enable effective responses to global water challenges. Warming and drying trends in the Mediterranean Basin exacerbate regional water scarcity and threaten agricultural production, putting global food security at risk. This study aimed to review the most significant research on future water availability for the Mediterranean agricultural sector under climate change (CC) scenarios published during 2009–2024. Two searches were performed in the Scopus and Web of Science databases, to which previously identified significant studies from different periods were also added. By applying a methodology duly protocoled in the PRISMA2020-based guideline, a final number of 44 particularly relevant studies was selected for review. A bibliometric analysis has shown that most of the published research was focused on Southwestern European countries (i.e., Spain, Italy, Portugal) and grapevine and olive tree crops. Overall, the reviewed studies state that future Mediterranean water reserves may not meet agricultural water demands, due to reduced reservoir inflows and higher irrigation demands under future CC and socioeconomic scenarios. Regarding adaptation measures to improve water-use management in agriculture, the majority of the reviewed studies indicate that the use of integrated modelling platforms and decision–support systems can significantly contribute to the development and implementation of improved water/land-management practices. As global water resources decline and demand increases due to population growth and climate change, innovative rainwater storage systems (IRSSs) have become crucial. This review examines the potential of IRSSs to sustainably address rainwater challenges by analyzing key factors that influence their success. Drawing on research from Scopus and Google Scholar, it evaluates IRSSs in both urban and rural settings across different countries and regions, focusing on their contribution to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6. This review highlights how social, environmental, economic, and policy factors affect the success of IRSS compared to traditional systems common in developing nations. IRSSs can outperform traditional methods in sustainability, encouraging their adoption. However, there is a significant gap in policy integration that needs to be addressed for successful implementation. Further research is needed to better understand the contributing factors and their role in achieving sustainability. Integrating rainwater harvesting into national water policies could offer valuable guidance for policymakers and water resource managers in addressing issues like urban floods, water scarcity, and related social and environmental challenges in developing countries. The ability of non-native plant species to tolerate water scarcity and high temperatures, especially during the early stages of development, may influence their invasive potential. Ligustrum lucidum is a tree native to warm temperate areas of Asia. To understand the potential expansion of this non-native invasive species into more arid regions, we conducted an experiment in incubation chambers to evaluate seed germination under different water potentials and the response of its seedlings under different water availability and temperature scenarios. Seeds were collected from central Argentina and placed to germinate under four different water potentials (−0.2; −0.4; −0.7 and −1.2 MPa) created with polyethylene glycol 6000. Additionally, L. lucidum seedlings were subjected to contrasting levels of water availability combined with different periods of exposure to high temperatures. Germination measurements (germination percentage, velocity, and synchronicity) decreased at lower water potentials. No germination occurred at −0.7 and −1.2 MPa. The seedlings showed a slight increase in mortality and a significant reduction in most of the growth variables under low water availability, while exposure to high temperatures had significant effects only on chlorophyll estimate. The germination response of L. lucidum to water deficits could pose a significant constraint on its establishment in arid ecosystems. Nonetheless, this constraint may be alleviated by the species' prolific propagule production, coupled with asynchronous seed germination, which may help it exploit more humid micro-sites or sporadic water events. This paper contributes to the advancement of Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) modelling in addressing the Water-Energy-Food (WEF) Nexus. As such, it introduces water resources as a production factor for both the energy sector and irrigated agriculture, as well as their competition for the endowment, aiming to explicitly represent additional components of the WEF with respect to a standard CGE in the literature. Thus, it develops different modelling structures by computing impacts on regional GDP, sectorial prices, and production outputs in response to hypothetical water scarcity scenarios. This analysis allows for the determination of the role of data and modelling assumptions, such as production function, water substitutability with other endowments, water mobility across sectors, and sectorial water intensity, in influencing the results. Finally, the paper develops a dynamic scenario analysis, showing that an enhanced representation of the Nexus can significantly affect the macroeconomic dynamics of the simulations and their regional implications. Rooftop rainwater harvesting (RRWH) offers a potential solution to Jordan's pressing water scarcity problems. Yet, its feasibility and benefits necessitate a thorough assessment, particularly as existing studies on the subject are outdated and often constrained by limited scope or small data sets. To this end, our study assessed the potential of RRWH in Jordan's 12 governorates, utilizing historical rainfall data from 1987 to 2018 and official statistics on population and rooftop areas. The analyses used the Ripple Method and Water Balance Model to determine potential harvestable water volumes, potential water-saving percentages, and optimal tank sizes under different scenarios (i.e., using rainwater to meet the total consumption or only for toilet flushing). The findings reveal that Jordan has a total potential for rooftop rainwater harvesting amounting to 23.74 Mm3/year, corresponding to 4.54% of the total water demand. Should RRWH be implemented across all rooftops, the projected financial savings for Jordan could range from $170 million to $678 million. Among the governorates, Irbid and Amman have the highest potential, with estimated yields of 7.754 Mm3 and 8.453 Mm3 per year, respectively. Based on the best results for the scenario where harvested rainwater is only used to flush toilets, the optimal tank sizes for storing rainwater were estimated to be 2.7 m3 and 2 m3 per household in Ajlun and Irbid, respectively. For a regularized case (October–May), a payback period of 12.5–24 years based on desalination cost was found for an RRWH system capable of meeting thrice the flushing needs of a household. Government intervention has become an important measure to restrain groundwater overexploitation. This paper analyzes the effect of three types of government intervention measures, namely, guidance, incentive and constraint, on farmers' groundwater utilization behavior, from the perspective of scale-heterogeneity, using general quantile regression model, by survey data of 1122 households in well irrigation area of north China. The results showed that: (1) the incentive and guiding measures have negative effects on farmers' groundwater usage, while the effect of restrictive measures is not obvious. The guided policy is superior to the incentive measure as to governance effect. (2) With the increase of farmers' land scale, the influence of incentive measures shows a trend of weakening, and the effect of guided measures on groundwater demand reduction of farmers is stronger. When it comes to the different point of water consumption, when at the point level of 0.25, the incentive measures have the most obvious inhibitory effect. With the increase of water consumption of farmers, the guided measures begin to play a core role. The effect of restrictive measures is not obvious with the increase of water consumption. (3) In addition, farmers' irrigation water consumption also is affected by gender, cognition of water resources shortage, ecological cognitive level, acquisition ability of disaster information, village rain conditions, the degree of water rights market development, feelings of water fee increase, irrigated disputes in the village, collective economic level of village. Background: Climate change induces perturbation in the global water cycle, profoundly impacting water availability for agriculture and therefore global food security. Water stress encompasses both drought (i.e. water scarcity) that causes the drying of soil and subsequent plant desiccation, and flooding, which results in excess soil water and hypoxia for plant roots. Terrestrial plants have evolved diverse mechanisms to cope with soil water stress, with the root system serving as the first line of defense. The responses of roots to water stress can involve both structural and physiological changes, and their plasticity is a vital feature of these adaptations. Genetic methodologies have been extensively employed to identify numerous genetic loci linked to water stress-responsive root traits. This knowledge is immensely important for developing crops with optimal root systems that enhance yield and guarantee food security under water stress conditions. Results: This review focused on the latest insights into modifications in the root system architecture and anatomical features of legume roots in response to drought and flooding stresses. Special attention was given to recent breakthroughs in understanding the genetic underpinnings of legume root development under water stress. The review also described various root phenotyping techniques and examples of their applications in different legume species. Finally, the prevailing challenges and prospective research avenues in this dynamic field as well as the potential for using root system architecture as a breeding target are discussed. Conclusions: This review integrated the latest knowledge of the genetic components governing the adaptability of legume roots to water stress, providing a reference for using root traits as the new crop breeding targets. In response to water scarcity in the Bashang area of northwest Hebei Province, a cold and arid region in north China, and to address the diminishing groundwater levels caused by pumping irrigation, this study investigated the impact of rainwater tank size and water supply on kidney beans production in greenhouses under various precipitation scenarios to determine the production potential and development strategies for regional precipitation resources. Under the background of average annual precipitation, kidney bean yield increased with increasing reservoir volume and shorter irrigation cycles. Under a 4-day irrigation cycle, the water demand satisfaction rate of kidney beans reached 100% water demand when the rainwater tank size was 15.7 m3. Against the wide variation in multi-year regional precipitation from 1992 to 2023, the annual effect of rainwater harvest was simulated using precipitation data collected 20 years with an 80% precipitation guarantee rate. The average minimum yield reduction rate obtained was 9.4%, and the corresponding minimum rainwater tank size was 29.5 m3. By superimposing the rainwater harvested in the shed and nonshed areas, the volume of the reservoir without yield reduction could be reduced to 20.0 m3. The sum of discharged and inventory water was much greater than the water scarcity in each water supply situation. Simulating and analyzing the effect of the relationship between rainwater tank size and water supply on rainwater harvesting in regional farmland by year provides important data affecting the construction of regional rainwater storage facilities and water supply efficiency. To achieve a high, stable yield of kidney beans grown in a greenhouse with shed film and shed area rainwater harvesting in north China, 2.6 m3 supplementary groundwater irrigation is still needed during the annual growing season. Water scarcity is becoming a common problem due to urbanization, industrialization, rapid population growth, and climate change. The situation is exacerbated in semi-arid and arid regions due to low or no rainfall and the resulting pronounced seasonality of river flows. Accurate assessment of reservoir operational performance plays a critical role in water resource sustainability and utilization. In this study, Water Evaluation and Planning (WEAP) models were developed to evaluate the operational performance of five reservoirs in the Yesilirmak Basin in Turkey. Since each reservoir is a single reservoir system, calibration of the WEAP model involved adjusting the approximate rule curves derived by the sequent peak algorithm and the allocation coefficient during hedging until the simulated reservoir storage states matched the observed ones as closely as possible. The agreement of the simulated storage capacities of the WEAP model with the measured volumes was evaluated using the coefficient of determination (R 2) and the Nash-Sutcliffe model efficiency coefficient (NSE). The results demonstrate that the WEAP model can be used to design and plan the operational strategies for the reservoirs in the Yesilirmak Basin. The performance of the reservoirs operated with the designed rule curves was evaluated using the reliability, resilience, vulnerability, and sustainability indices. For Cakmak, Corum and Yenihayat reservoirs, it is shown that these reservoirs are sufficient to meet the demand. The vulnerability of Alaca reservoir is only 1%, which is negligible. Ensuring universal access to water is a global goal, closely intertwined with the achievement of many other sustainable development goals. The increasing global demand for water, however, poses serious risks to the sustainability of our water supplies. Reduced food security, environmental degradation, economic productivity losses, reduced incomes, poor health, and impeded education, especially for children, are only some of the many consequences of water scarcity. Therefore, to measure water deficiency, the study constructed an improved Water Poverty Index (iWPI) using multivariate Principal Component Analysis (PCA) analysis. The iWPI takes into account dimensions of water resource availability, water access, societal capacity to address water-related issues, water-use patterns, and environmental water needs. The findings indicate that the capacity component holds the greatest significance in the iWPI, followed by resources. Multiple regression analysis to examine the impact of water scarcity on socioeconomic development revealed that access to water and the ability to manage water resources have the greatest impact on the countries' levels of socioeconomic development. The research upholds the correlation between accessibility to water and socioeconomic development and thus can be used for policy prescriptions for improving the socioeconomic growth of nations through addressing the channels contributing to water poverty. The Northwest Arid Region faces the most serious resource-based water shortage in China, with challenges from engineering-, structural- and management-based water shortages. This water scarcity critically limits the socio-economic development of the region. Rational allocation of scarce water resources to achieve sustainable development of the ecological environment and economy has become a key issue in water resources research in the Northwest Arid Region. South-Central Ningxia, part of the Northwest Arid Region, exemplifies these challenges. This paper examines the urban and rural water supply projects in South-Central Ningxia. The current scheduling scheme focuses primarily on the distribution of water demand, with inadequate attention paid to water-quality requirements. Localized exceedances of water-quality standards indicate the existing scheduling scheme has failed to effectively control water-quality issues while ensuring water quantity. This study is the first to systematically evaluate the impact of the South-Central Ningxia Water Supply Project on water quality alongside field surveys and data analysis and propose an optimized scheduling scheme that addresses both water quantity and quality needs. The main findings are as follows: 1. Overall water quality is good, except for consistently high total nitrogen levels. 2. This paper explores how participatory science helps address water supply challenges in developing countries suffering from water shortages. In the absence of technical capacity to monitor the water supply system, this participation constitutes an excellent alternative to involve citizens in data collection and evaluation of the quality of the water service. The paper presents the design and implementation of a participatory science platform that enables data about the quality of the water supply in the city of Kharas in Palestine to be collected. Thanks to significant citizen participation, the study demonstrates that participatory science enhances the management of the water supply system and public awareness and engagement. Temporal and spatial analysis of collected data helped us to better understand the water supply system and identify the causes of the water service degradation. The study shows that the success of citizen participation requires cooperation between the water staff and citizens, including continuous dialogue and training and the construction of a friendly citizen participation platform. Global climate change is leading to increased frequency of extreme climatic events, higher temperatures and water scarcity. Tef (Eragrostis tef (Zucc.) Trotter) is an underutilized C4 cereal crop that harbors a rich gene pool for stress resilience and nutritional quality. Despite gaining increasing attention as an "opportunity" crop, physiological responses and adaptive mechanisms of tef to drought stress have not been sufficiently investigated. This study was aimed to characterize the dynamic physiological responses of tef to drought. Six selected tef genotypes were subjected to high-throughput whole-plant functional phenotyping to assess multiple physiological responses to contrasting water regimes. Drought stress led to a substantial reduction in total, shoot and root dry weights, by 59%, 62% and 44%, respectively (averaged across genotypes), and an increase of 50% in the root-to- shoot ratio, relative to control treatment. Drought treatment induced also significant reductions in stomatal conductance, transpiration, osmotic potential and water-use efficiency, increased chlorophyll content and delayed heading. Tef genotypes exhibited diverse water-use strategies under drought: water-conserving (isohydric) or non-conserving (anisohydric), or an intermediate strategy, as well as variation in drought-recovery rate. Genotype RTC-290b exhibited outstanding multifaceted drought-adaptive performance, including high water-use efficiency coupled with high productivity under drought and control treatments, high chlorophyll and transpiration under drought, and faster drought recovery rate. This study provides a first insight into the dynamic functional physiological responses of tef to water deficiency and the variation between genotypes in drought-adaptive strategies. Drought is a major factor affecting crops, thus efforts are needed to increase plant resilience to this abiotic stress. The overlapping signaling pathways between drought and cell wall integrity maintenance responses create a possibility of increasing drought resistance by modifying cell walls. Here, using herbaceous and woody plant model species, Arabidopsis and hybrid aspen, respectively, we investigated how the integrity of xylan in secondary walls affects the responses of plants to drought stress. Plants, in which secondary wall xylan integrity was reduced by expressing fungal GH10 and GH11 xylanases or by affecting genes involved in xylan backbone biosynthesis, were subjected to controlled drought while their physiological responses were continuously monitored by RGB, fluorescence, and/or hyperspectral cameras. For Arabidopsis, this was supplemented with survival test after complete water withdrawal and analyses of stomatal function and stem conductivity. All Arabidopsis xylan-impaired lines showed better survival upon complete watering withdrawal, increased stomatal density and delayed growth inhibition by moderate drought, indicating increased resilience to moderate drought associated with modified xylan integrity. Subtle differences were recorded between xylan biosynthesis mutants (irx9, irx10 and irx14) and xylanaseexpressing lines. irx14 was the most drought resistant genotype, and the only genotype with increased lignin content and unaltered xylem conductivity despite its irx phenotype. Rosette growth was more affected by drought in GH11- than in GH10-expressing plants. In aspen, mild downregulation of GT43B and C genes did not affect drought responses and the transgenic plants grew better than the wild-type in drought and well-watered conditions. Both GH10 and GH11 xylanases strongly inhibited stem elongation and root growth in well-watered conditions but growth was less inhibited by drought in GH11-expressing plants than in wild-type. Overall, plants with xylan integrity impairment in secondary walls were less affected than wild-type by moderately reduced water availability but their responses also varied among genotypes and species. Thus, modifying the secondary cell wall integrity can be considered as a potential strategy for developing crops better suited to withstand water scarcity, but more research is needed to address the underlying molecular causes of this variability. Northeast China is an important base for grain production, dominated by rain-fed agriculture that relies on green water. However, in the context of global climate change, rising regional temperatures, changing precipitation patterns, and increasing drought frequency pose threats and challenges to agricultural green water security. This study provides a detailed assessment of the spatiotemporal characteristics and development trends of green water security risks in the Northeast region under the base period (2001–2020) and the future (2031–2090) climate change scenarios (SSP245 and SSP585) using the green water scarcity (GWS) index based on raster-scale crop spatial distribution data, Delta downscaling bias-corrected ERA5 data, and CMIP6 multimodal data. During the base period, the green water risk-free zone for dry crops is mainly distributed in the center and east of the Northeast region (72.4% of the total area), the low-risk zone is primarily located in the center (14.0%), and the medium-risk (8.3%) and high-risk (5.3%) zones are mostly in the west. Under SSP245 and SSP585 future climate change scenarios, the green water security risk shows an overall expansion from the west to the center and east, with the low-risk zone increasing to 21.6% and 23.8%, the medium-risk zone increasing to 16.0% and 17.9%, and the high-risk zone increasing to 6.9% and 6.8%, respectively. Considering dry crops with GWS greater than 0.1 as in need of irrigation, the irrigated area increases from 27.6% (base period) to 44.5% (SSP245) and 48.6% (SSP585), with corresponding increases in irrigation water requirement (IWR) of 4.64 and 5.92 billion m3, respectively, which further exacerbates conflicts between supply and demand of agricultural water resources. In response to agricultural green water security risks, coping strategies such as evapotranspiration (ET)-based water resource management for dry crops and deficit irrigation are proposed. The results of this study can provide scientific basis and decision support for the development of Northeast irrigated agriculture and the construction planning of the national water network. Small-scale desalination and atmospheric water provisioning systems can be vital for supplying drinking water in water-scarce areas. However, their potential to support vulnerable communities in such regions has not been fully assessed. Through an in-depth comprehensive review of 111 peer-reviewed publications from 1992 to 2023 and commercial technologies, this study shows significant knowledge gaps on implementing those systems in water-scarce vulnerable communities. To address knowledge gaps, research and implementation should align with local socio-economic, institutional and cultural contexts involving supportive policies, funding mechanisms, risk analysis, human resources, participatory approaches and consideration of community needs. A recent article published in the Journal of the American Water Works Association provides a comprehensive analysis of water usage in the Colorado River Basin. The researchers found that irrigated agriculture is the largest consumer of Colorado River water, accounting for 74% of direct human use and 52% of overall water consumption. The study also highlights the need for detailed knowledge of water usage in order to develop strategies for sustainable water supply and demand. The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries experience a harsh environment with low precipitation and high evaporation rates. This presents a significant challenge of water scarcity and water quality degradation which is exacerbated by land use practices. Agriculture, urbanization, and industrialization are impacting the management of water resources. This paper examines the state of water resources in the GCC countries and presents the impact of land use practices. A detailed analysis of the relationship between land use and groundwater is conducted with a focus on the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), the Sultanate of Oman, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The results indicate a drop in agricultural activities, an increase in bare land and urban areas, depletion of groundwater, and water quality degradation. These changes were attributed to excessive agricultural and industrial uses, climate change, and rapid urbanization. The findings show the need for sustainable land use practices and water resources management. Climate change has exacerbated the contradiction between water scarcity and sustainable agricultural development. Assessing the crop water use efficiency and its influencing factors could provide a decision-making reference to realize Sustainable Development Goal 2. By analyzing the temporal and spatial evolution characteristics of the crop water footprint, the blue water footprint, green water footprint, and grey water footprint were introduced into the super efficiency slack-based measure model to evaluate the crop water use efficiency in basins. The influence of the driving factors was examined by using the geographic detector model. The situation in the provinces along the Yellow River Basin from 2005 to 2020 was used as a verification case. The results indicated that (1) during the study period, crop water use in the basin was mainly based on the blue water footprint, accounting for approximately 55% of the total water footprint, the grey water footprint, accounting for approximately 30% of the total water footprint, and the green water footprint, accounting for the lowest proportion, at approximately 15%. (2) The crop water use efficiency exhibited a spatial distribution pattern of high values in the east and low values in the west, with obvious upstream provinces disposable income of rural residents (0.71) > population urbanization rate (0.65) > degree of agricultural mechanization (0.63) > agricultural disaster rate (0.61). Furthermore, the interaction effects between the driving factors were greater than the effects of the single factors. The study provides an important reference for understanding the changes, driving mechanisms, and impacts of crop water use efficiency in basin areas. Climate change is one of the main factors that caused scarcity of fresh water phenomenon all over the world. The lack of water in major parts of Iraq affected all sectors that use water and cause obvious damages to ecosystems. Karbala province suffers from frequent water scarcity due to water scarcity and abnormally high temperatures. In the present study, remote sensing and GIS were applied to quantify water scarcity and evaluate its effects on vegetation in this fragile semiarid ecosystem. Analysis of hydrological data of the study area was carried out during 2013 to 2022 to compute water availability and shortage based on the criteria and requirements of water sector and environmental management in Iraq. Remotely sensed Landsat 8 images data were applied to measure changes on vegetation and the effects of water scarcity. Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index (SAVI) was employed to identify vegetation and detect its change. Results showed that the area witnessed decreasing in water availability compared to the reference year. Maximum available water reached 1977.535 million m 3 in 2013, while the minimum of 859.227 million m 3 was observed in 2022. The maximum and minimum vegetation area reached 535.610 km 2 and 430.605 km 2 in 2013 and 2022, respectively. Results indicated that all the years posterior to the reference year experienced water scarcity and vegetation damage, where the maximum and minimum water scarcity rates were 56% and 8% in 2022 and 2016, respectively. The maximum impact of water scarcity rate on vegetation was ca. 20% in both years 2015 and 2022. Water scarcity is constantly increasing over time, thus evaluating its impacts and forecasting its future specification will support decision-makers to take the necessary measures to mitigate its effects. Lack of access to piped water, as well as inadequate quantity and quality of water, are risk factors for acute gastrointestinal infections. In 2022, 4.9% of households in Mexico did not have piped water; 19.3% lacked, at some point, sufficient water for hygiene; and 18.9% perceived that the water was unfit for human consumption. During the same year, at least 1,441,226 people suffered from a gastrointestinal infection. Households without access to piped water and with insufficient water for hygiene were 27% more likely to suffer from a gastrointestinal infection than households with piped water and a sufficient supply for hygiene (odds ratio: 1.27; CI 95%: 1.26–1.28). The latent class analysis shows that 22% of households belong to the high-risk class of suffering gastrointestinal infections associated with a lack of piped water, insufficient quantity, and poor quality of water. Water scarcity poses a significant challenge to social integration and economic development, necessitating efficient water management strategies. This study compares time series forecasting models, both classical, Holt–Winters and ARIMA, and modern, LSTM and Prophet, to determine the most accurate model for predicting water flow in public supply networks. Data from four rural Portuguese locations were used, with preprocessing ensuring quality and uniformity. Performance metrics were evaluated for both medium-term (10 days) and long-term (3 months) forecasts. Results indicate that classical models like Holt–Winters and ARIMA perform better for medium-term predictions, while modern models, particularly LSTM, excel in long-term forecasts by effectively capturing seasonal patterns. The Haihe Plain in China is situated in the world's largest groundwater funnel area, with per capita water resources far below the internationally recognized "extremely water-scarce" standard. To address the issue of water shortage in summer maize-planting areas of the Haihe Plain, we conducted research on the variation of summer maize evapotranspiration using a medium-sized lysimeter. This study aims to provide technical support for water-saving irrigation in summer maize fields. Through path analysis, direct and indirect influencing factors affecting the evapotranspiration of summer maize fields were determined. The results showed that the cumulative evapotranspiration of bare ground and farmland during the entire growth period of summer maize was 173.57 mm and 382.97 mm, respectively, with evapotranspiration intensities of 1.52 mm/d and 3.36 mm/d, respectively. Evapotranspiration during the maturity stage of summer maize was the least, accounting for only 1.82% of total evapotranspiration during the entire growth period. The period from the jointing to milk-ripening stage is when evapotranspiration in maize fields is at its highest. During this period, evapotranspiration in maize fields amounted to 265.58 mm, accounting for 69.35% of total evapotranspiration. The evapotranspiration intensity was 3.59 mm/day, which is 1.34 times higher than that of bare soil. The evapotranspiration intensities during each growth stage were ranked as jointing stage > tasseling-silking stage > seedling stage > milk maturity stage > maturity stage. The daily evapotranspiration of summer maize fields showed a "unimodal" curve with low values in the morning and evening, and high values at noon. Path analysis indicated that daily radiation and maximum daily temperature had the greatest impact on the evapotranspiration of maize fields, with the direct effect of maximum daily temperature being restrictive and the indirect effect being promotive, resulting in an overall promotive effect. Stochastic hydrology produces ensembles of time series that represent plausible future streamflow to simulate and test the operation of water resource systems. A premise of stochastic hydrology is that ensembles should be statistically representative of what may occur in the future. In the past, the application of this premise has involved producing ensembles that are statistically equivalent to the observed or historical streamflow sequence. This requires a number of metrics or statistics that can be used to test statistical similarity. However, with climate change, the past may no longer be representative of the future. Ensembles to test future systems operations should recognize non‐stationarity and include time series representing expected changes. This poses challenges for their testing and validation. In this paper, we suggest an evidence‐based analysis in which streamflow ensembles, whether statistically similar to and representative of the past or a changing future, should be characterized and assessed using an extensive set of statistical metrics. We have assembled a broad set of metrics and applied them to annual streamflow in the Colorado River at Lees Ferry to illustrate the approach. We have also developed a tree‐based classification approach to categorize both ensembles and metrics. This approach provides a way to visualize and interpret differences between streamflow ensembles. The metrics presented, along with the classification, provide an analytical framework for characterizing and assessing the suitability of future streamflow ensembles, recognizing the presence of non‐stationarity. This contributes to better planning in large river basins, such as the Colorado, facing water supply shortages. Water resources in arid and semi-arid regions are constrained by several critical problems, including scarcity of water resources and extensive use of groundwater. Climate change and population growth will certainly result in a decline in water tables and degradation of groundwater quality. The purpose of this study is to create rainwater retention ponds in the Najran Valley located at the southern border of Saudi Arabia. Over the past decade, various researchers have reported a sharp decrease in the availability of water in the area. In addition to urban sprawl, excessive groundwater extraction is the primary cause of the decrease. Even though the valley receives a sufficient amount of rainfall throughout the year, there is no adequate rainwater management system in place. As a result of this combined water management issue, the authorities are seeking additional water storage options in addition to the Najran dam reservoir. To evaluate the flood characteristics of the region, an extensive GIS-based hydrological study is conducted. To estimate flood volumes, the critical flood-prone areas are identified and their catchments are calculated. To store rainwater generated by these catchments during rainfall events, a variety of suitable locations have been proposed for retention ponds. The construction of retention ponds would have numerous environmental benefits in addition to solving the problem of water scarcity. As water scarcity becomes the new norm in the Western United States, states such as California have increased their efforts to improve water resilience. Achieving water security under climate change, population growth, and urbanization requires an integrated multi-sectoral approach, where adaptation strategies combine supply and demand management interventions. Yet, most studies consider supply-side and demand-side management strategies separately. Water conservation efforts are mainly driven by policy requirements and publicly available data to assess the effectiveness of demand- and supply-side management policies is often hard to find and unstructured. Here we present CaRDS - the statewide California Residential water Demand and Supply open dataset. CaRDS encompasses nine years (2013-2021) of monthly water supply and demand time series for 404 water suppliers in California, USA, compiled from different open-access data sources. The Hsinchu Science Park (HSP) in Taiwan plays a vital role in the chain of semiconductor production, but water scarcity has been challenging semiconductor manufacturing. The Baoshan Reservoir (BS) and the Baoshan Second Reservoir (BSR) are two major sources of water supply to the HSP. However, the impacts of climate change on the water supply have not been analyzed. In this study, a hydrological model (i.e., SWAT) and an operation model of the BR and the BSR were coupled to assess the climate change impacts on the inflow, outflow, and water storage volume (WSV) of the reservoirs. The simulations were based on the weather data for the RCP2.6, RCP4.5, RCP6.0, and RCP8.5 scenarios of AR5 for the Periods of 2021–2040, 2041–2060, 2061–2060, and 2081–2100 derived from up to 33 GCMs/EMSs. It is found that more intensified global warming would generally result in more apparent rainfall seasonality that is wetter in the wet season and dryer in the dry season and more magnified seasonality in river flow. During the hotspot period of water shortage in the HSP from February to May, future water scarcity is expected to worsen. Among the 16 combinations of scenarios and Periods, 13 indicate lower WSV in the future compared to the Baseline. The annual mean number of ten-day periods with WSV lower than the operation rule curve ranges from 4.84 to 6.95 ten-day periods, higher than the Baseline of 4.81 ten-day periods. Overall, RCP6.0 has the most significant impact on the study area, with the highest annual economic loss occurring during the 2041-2060 period, reaching USD 1 billion (~2.37% of the 2023 annual production value) for the HSP. This study also provides a three-month cumulative rainfall threshold as an operational warning indicator for the HSP. Our assessment results indicate that future water supply to the HSP should be a serious concern for stabilizing the manufacturing processes and hence the global semiconductor component supply. Water scarcity is commonly evaluated using the water resource stress index (WRSI). However, the conventional WRSI model cannot effectively reflect the water shortage in humid areas, which may lead to distorted evaluation results. To solve this problem, an improved WRSI has been designed. In the improved WRSI, the assessment year is first divided into multiple periods. Then, the temporal WRSI (T-WRSI) is built to evaluate water scarcity in each period. Finally, the comprehensive WRSI (C-WRSI) is constructed based on the entropy weight model (EWM) to synthetically assess the water shortage condition. The water scarcity of Yongzhou City is taken as a sample for evaluation. The results are as follows. (i) The Lingling-Lengshuitan District and Dong'an County suffer from the most serious water shortage. Their C-WRSI values are 0.464 and 0.458, respectively, both of which are "high" grades. (ii) The values of T-WRSI are more than 0.4 from August to October in most areas, indicating that the major key water shortage period is from August to October. (iii) The reasons for water shortage are that the annual runoff distribution in Yongzhou City is uneven with a uniformity coefficient (Cv) of 0.83, and the main irrigation periods are coincidentally accompanied by the retreat of rainfall. (iv) The main measures to solve water scarcity are to strengthen water resource management, to optimize plant structure, and to construct more reservoirs. (v) The C-WRSI values calculated by the improved model in each region are 95–168% larger than those of conventional WRSI. The improved WRSI has better capacities in evaluating the water shortage induced by uneven runoff within the year and identifying the key water scarcity period of humid regions. Tunisia is known as an underprivileged country in water resources, and water scarcity is evident in certain regions. In the long term, this situation could become more exacerbated, considering the increased risk of aridity. In this context, this work was carried out to study and compare the ecophysiological behavior of five olive cultivars facing drought stress and to evaluate the contribution of rhizobacteria to mitigate the effects of drought stress on these cultivars. The results showed a significant decrease in the relative water content (RWC) with the lowest percentage recorded for the 'Jarboui' cultivar (RWC = 37%), and the highest percentage was registered for the 'Chemcheli' cultivar (RWC = 71%). In addition, the performance index (PI) decreased for all the five cultivars and it reached the lowest values for 'Jarboui' and 'Chetoui' with 1.51 and 1.57, respectively. For the SPAD index, a decrease was registered for all the cultivars, except 'Chemcheli' (SPAD index = 89). Furthermore, the bacterial inoculation treatment improved the responses of cultivars to water stress. In fact, for all of the studied parameters, it was found that rhizobacterial inoculation significantly attenuated the effects of drought stress with variability dependent on the level of tolerance of the tested cultivars. Atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) is considered one of the promising technologies to alleviate the uneven‐distribution of water resources and water scarcity in arid regions of the world. Hydrogel‐based AWH materials are currently attracting increasing attention due to their low cost, high energy efficiency and simple preparation. However, there is a knowledge gap in the screening of hydrogel‐based AWH materials in terms of structure‐property relationships, which may increase the cost of trial and error in research and fabrication. In this study, we synthesised a variety of hydrogel‐based AWH materials, characterized their physochemcial properties visualized the electrostatic potential of polymer chains, and ultimately established the structure‐property‐application relationships of polymeric AWH materials. Poly(2‐acrylamido‐2‐methyl‐1‐propanesulfonic acid) (PAMPS) hydrogel is able to achieve an excellent water adsorption capacity of 0.62 g g−1 and a high water desorption efficiency of more than 90 % in relatively low‐moderate humidity environments, which is regarded as one of the polymer materials with potential for future AWH applications. The challenges posed by environmental pollution, water scarcity, and energy limitations resulting from industrialization and modernization pose significant threats to human habitats. Consequently, assessing ecological livability and delineating pathways for improvement carry considerable practical importance. Leveraging panel data encompassing 288 cities in China from 2010 to 2021, this study establishes an evaluation system for ecological livability, encompassing three dimensions: natural greenery level, residential comfort level, and environmental governance level. Subsequently, the study measures the ecological livability level and investigates the impact of "sponge city" pilots on ecological livability and their underlying mechanisms using a multi-period difference-in-differences model. Our findings underscore the substantial role of "sponge city" pilot projects in bolstering ecological livability, with robustness observed across various models and specifications. Specifically, human capital concentration and green technology innovation emerge as pivotal pathways through which "sponge city" pilots augment ecological livability. Moreover, the effectiveness of "sponge city" pilots varies across regions due to disparities in drought severity and water supply, with more pronounced effects observed in arid areas and cities facing water supply shortages. This research furnishes comprehensive theoretical and empirical underpinnings for comprehending the influence of "sponge city" pilots on ecological livability, offering valuable insights and recommendations to inform future efforts aimed at enhancing ecological livability and fostering sustainable development. Water demand continuously increases in urban zones, and water scarcity is frequently associated with a lack or a reduction of water availability at water sources and maintenance problems, such as leakage and pipe aging. These facts inevitably lead to challenging water distribution system (WDS) management. In this scenario, intermittent operation emerges as an alternative to system operation. This is not the most desirable solution from a social perspective because many consumers cannot be supplied as desired for days. To tackle problems like this, many works have investigated how to help decision makers improve water system efficiency during the last decades. Nevertheless, few works have considered combining several structural interventions, such as pipe replacement, installation of new pump stations, fixing leaks, and installing and controlling pump stations and valves. One reason is that alternatives for recovering the hydraulic capacity in decision-making processes are computationally burdensome, mathematically complex, and, sometimes, even physically incompatible. Considering the problem stated by the Battle of Intermittent Water Supply, this work proposes a methodology for optimal operation and recovery of a WDS. The Battle problem is presented in two stages organized during different years: Year 0 and the following 5 years. For Year 0, only operational optimization is allowed. Consequently, optimal operation of pumps and valves is proposed for this initial year to maximize the number of nodes being supplied. For the rest of the years, because implementing structural changes is allowed within a defined budget, the proposal suggests applying a search space reduction process based on a cost-benefit trade-off and the hydraulic relevance of each structural alternative evaluated individually in terms of the nine indicators proposed in the Battle statement. Those alternatives that better improve the indicators are then considered in a multiobjective optimization setting. For every year, a set of structural changes is selected, followed by related changes in the operational setup. The alternatives are selected year by year and evaluated considering the past selected alternatives to assess the effects during the five evaluation years. Over the past two decades, rapid climate change has severely impacted people's lives globally, affecting their safety and sustainability. Water, a vital human resource, has been severely affected, with drought and high temperatures leading to desertification, the drying up of rivers and lakes, spontaneous fires in forests, and massive floods and torrents due to melting ice and rising sea and ocean surface water levels. The expected impacts of climate change on the Nile, Egypt's primary water source, are significant. These impacts can vary across regions, depending on factors like local climate, socio-economic dynamics, topography, and environmental nature. Upper Egypt, characterized by arid and semi-arid regions, faces water scarcity and socio-economic development challenges. Climate change exacerbates these issues, posing significant threats to the region's ecological sustainability and socio-economic development. Therefore, it is crucial to address these impacts to ensure the Nile's continued vitality and sustainability. The study aims to analyze the climate change data over the past few decades, analyze its characteristics, and model its effects on Upper Egypt's water sources. The study expected a big decrease in the water resources of the Nile. While what is currently occurring in terms of fluctuating rainfall rates between scarcity and severity contradicts the results of those studies, that is the best evidence of the need for further research and studies to obtain more reliable and consistent results with the reality that it may help decision-makers to develop scenarios to manage climate change effectively, preventing or reducing negative effects, and finding suitable alternatives. The need for fresh water production is especially high in hot dry climates without any sources of drinking water but with an abundance of sea and underground water. The solution is water desalination with efficient solar-powered water treatment plants. This article proposes a new modification of a basin made of thin-finned corrugation with 43°-angle-inclined sides, equal to the region's latitude, which provide strong heating. The experiments were carried out in the hot climate of Aktau city (43°49′ N, 51°1′ E). The study's outcomes can be useful for regions with drinking water scarcity. To define the level of the corrugated basin's efficiency, two versions (SS-1, SS-2) of experiments were carried out on a two-slope distiller, complete with two basins. In SS-1, basin-2 was heated by air. By 15:00, basin-2 had heated up to 98.5 °C, and the acrylic cover above had heated up to 101.6 °C, which led to its "deformation". By 12.00 p.m., the temperature differentials between the glass (40.7 °C), the air–water mixture (57.3 °C), and basin-1 (61.1 °C) were 16.6 °C and 20.4 °C. This resulted from the wind speed increasing up to 5.9 m/s. The large temperature differential contributed to the condensate yield increasing from 0.128 kg at 11 o'clock to 0.293 kg at 12 o'clock. The throughput capability of basin-1 per day was equal to 2.094 kg. Basin-2's input to the performance in SS-1 was only the thermal effect. In SS-2, basin-2 was used as a regular basin. The plexiglass temperature was lower than the temperatures of the water and basin-2. The temperature differential between the glass and air–water mixture at 10:00 a.m. was 20 °C; at 12:00 p.m. it was 30.6 °C; and a value of 30.6 °C was recorded at 3:00 p.m. The thermal differential between the glass and the air-water mixture provided the highest condensate yield of 1.114 kg at 3.00 p.m. The condensate yield from the basins in SS-2 was 8.72 kg, including 3.5 kg from basin-1, which is 1.7 times more than from basin-1 in SS-1. The experimental results are consistent with the equations coming from the models of Clark J.A. and Dunkle R.V. Tcondensation ≠ Tevaporation is an irreversible process. When the basins are heated, the heat is consumed; when the glass cools down, the heat is given off. Heat losses are minimized due to the "gap" and positive energy is provided. The still's throughput capability can be made larger by increasing the basin's area, reducing the water layer thickness, and regulating the flowrate of the desalinated water. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article analyzes the vicious cycle of Israel's control of water resources in Jordan and the Palestinian territories, the development of a one‐state reality in the region, and geopolitical changes driven by the Israeli occupation and the war in Gaza. Israel no longer suffers from water shortages, but its domination of Palestine and the conflict sparked by Hamas have increased the yawning water deficit. This has played a role in the decades‐long move away from the two‐state solution promised by the Oslo peace process. This article examines regional security through the lens of water resources. It shows that Jordan is left with few options but to accept its dependence on Israel and muddle through. In addition, the Palestinian territories, which face not just Israeli military rule but also the expansion of settlements, experience major water shortages. The article concludes that the increasing water hegemony reduces Israeli incentives for a comprehensive peace with the Palestinians that could resolve the resource crisis and enable two states to live side by side. In the Mesilla and Rincon Valleys of southern New Mexico, prolonged drought, climate change, increased competition for water, and an ongoing lawsuit with Texas over groundwater pumping create precarity in regard to long- term water resources for agricultural production. As the sector that uses the most water in New Mexico, agricultural participation in water conservation is critical. Using ethnographic data, along with the key concepts of horizons of the future and scale, I examine barriers to addressing water- scarce futures in the present. Ultimately, I argue that adding a multiscalar approach to the established framework of "horizoning work" can generate collaborative water conservation efforts with localized, temporally limited scopes to facilitate farmer participation in efforts to address water- scarce futures. The study assessed the effectiveness of infiltration-based Low Impact Development (LID) techniques and augmented infiltration LIDs (such as recharge shaft) in a coastal urban catchment in India using a semi-coupled approach between numerical models VS2DI and Storm Water Management Model (SWMM). Site specific VS2DI modelling indicated that the infiltration LIDs resulted in more saturation excess runoff due to the soil's insufficient hydraulic conductivity and increased lateral flow. Catchment-scale modeling indicated that LIDs significantly improved water retention (p ≪ 0.05), with a 35% reduction in total runoff volume. The recharge shafts were shown to be more efficient in reducing runoff volume and peak runoff, particularly for high runoff rates (more than 22 mm/hr). The study suggests that direct recharge to the aquifer through recharge shafts could be a suitable solution to manage runoff and meet the demand for domestic water supply during times of water scarcity in coastal urban catchments. Reservoir operation of inter-basin water diversion project can effectively alleviate regional water shortage. However, future climate change will change regional runoff processes, which poses significant risks to the operation of inter-basin water diversion projects. The study considers occurrence probability of risk sources and risk-bearing bodies vulnerability, to constructs a risk operation system based on runoff forecast. Taking the inter-basin water diversion project from Hanjiang to Weihe River as a case, the study has made three contributions. Frist, the study uses the risk theory to derive the risk degree formula that consider multiple uncertain factors. Second, the difference in water diversion scale between risk operating and optimal operating is analyzed. The risk operating system can transfer the risk of water diversion from the dry period to the wet period, and reduce the probability of extreme risk. Third, the risk transfer law from water source area to water receiving area is quantified, and the influence law of risk source elements on risk degree is clarified. Risk source and risk bearing body in water receiving area are directly related to water shortage and its probability distribution. With the increase of water shortage probability, loss rate of socio-economic decreases.
