Flow-electrode capacitive deionization (FCDI) is a promising technology for sustainable water treatment. However, studies on the process have thus far been limited to lab-scale conditions and select fields of application. Such limitation is induced by several shortcomings, one of which is the absence of a comprehensive process model that accurately predicts the operational performance and the energy consumption of FCDI. In this study, a simulation model is newly proposed with initial validation based on experimental data and is then utilized to elucidate the performance and the specific energy consumption (SEC) of FCDI under multiple source water conditions ranging from near-groundwater to high salinity brine. Further, simulated pilot-scale FCDI system was compared with actual brackish water reverse osmosis (BWRO) and seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) plant data with regard to SEC to determine the feasibility of FCDI as an alternative to the conventional membrane processes. Analysis showed that FCDI is competent for operation against brackish water solutions under all possible operational conditions with respect to the BWRO. Moreover, its distinction can be extended to the SWRO for seawater conditions through optimization of its total effective membrane area via scale-up. Accordingly, future directions for the advancement of FCDI was suggested to ultimately prompt the commercialization of the FCDI process.

For membrane-based, water treatment technologies, fouling remains a significant challenge for pressure-driven processes. While many antifouling strategies have been proposed, there remains significant room for improved efficiency. Direct application of microbubbles (MBs) at a membrane surface offers a promising approach for managing interfacial fouling through continuous physical interaction(s). Despite such potential, to date, integration and optimization of in-situ generated MBs at the membrane interface that are both highly antifouling with minimal energy inputs and unwanted side reactions remains mostly outstanding. Here we demonstrate the application of conductive, porous nickel foam for electrolysis-based generation of hydrogen microbubbles at an ultra-filtration (UF) membrane interface, which significantly mitigates membrane fouling for a range of model foulants. System characterization and optimization includes comparison of metal foams (Ni, Cu, Ti), faradic efficiencies, hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) curves, cyclic voltammetry, and quantification of hydrogen gas flux and bubble size, as a function of applied current. When optimized, we report rapid (<5 min) and near complete (∼99 %) flux recovery for three classes of foulants, including calcium alginate, humic acid (HA), and SiO 2 particles. For all, the described MB-based approach is orders of magnitude more energy efficient when compared to conventional cleaning strategies. Finally, we demonstrate the MB-based regeneration/cleaning process is stable and repeatable for ten cycles and also highly effective for a challenge water (as a model oilfield brine). Membrane distillation (MD) shows promise for achieving high salinity treatment and zero liquid discharge (ZLD) compared to conventional water treatment processes due to its unique characteristics, including low energy consumption and high resulting water quality. However, performance degradation due to fouling and scaling under high recovery conditions remains a challenge, particularly considering the need to control both cations and anions for maximum scaling mitigation. Accordingly, in this study, alternating current (AC) operation for electrically conductive membrane distillation (ECMD) is newly proposed, based on its potential for controlling both cations and anions, in contrast to conventional direct current (DC) operation. Systematic experiments and theoretical analysis show that water recovery in ECMD can be increased by 27% through AC operation. The use of membrane-based technology has evolved into an important strategy for supplying freshwater from seawater and wastewater to overcome the problems of water scarcity around the world. However, the presence of natural organic matter (NOM), including humic substances affects the performance of the process. Here, we present a systematic report on the mineralization of humic acid (HA), as a model for NOM, in high concentration of salts using the ultraviolet light-activated peroxymonosulfate (UV/PMS) system as a potential alternative for HA elimination during membrane-based seawater desalination and water treatment processes. Effects of various parameters such as PMS concentration, solution type, pH, anions, and anion-cation matrix on HA mineralization were assessed. The results show that 100%, 78% and 58% of HA (2 mg/L TOC) were mineralized with rate constants of 0.085 min -1 , 0.0073 min -1 , and 0.0041 min -1 after 180 min reaction time at pH 7 when 0.5 mM PMS was used in deionized water, sodium chloride solution (35,000 ppm) and synthetic seawater, respectively. The reduced efficiency under saline conditions was attributed to the presence of anions in the system that acted as sulfate and hydroxyl radicals' scavengers. Furthermore, the safety of the treated synthetic seawater was evaluated by analyzing the residual transformed products. Due to the shortage of freshwater around the world, seawater is becoming an important water source. However, seawater contains a high concentration of bromide that can form harmful disinfection by-products during water disinfection. Therefore, the current seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) has to adopt two-pass reverse osmosis (RO) configuration for effective bromide removal, increasing the overall desalination cost. In this study, a bromide selective composite electrode was developed for membrane capacitive deionisation (MCDI). The composite electrode was developed by coating a mixture of bromide selective resin and anion exchange polymer on the surface of the commercial activated carbon electrode, and its performance was compared to that of conventional carbon electrode. The results demonstrated that the composite electrode has ten times better bromide selectivity than the conventional carbon electrode. Wetting by fouling is phenomenon specific to membrane distillation (MD) and are regarded as challenges to the seawater membrane distillation (SWMD) process. To understand fouling and wetting, the influence of Mg and Sr crystals, which can potentially cause scaling, as well as Ca crystals deposited on the membrane surface were investigated. Mg(OH) 2 and CaSO 4 had significant impact on fouling and wetting. Even if CaCO 3 and SrSO 4 had no effects on fouling and wetting as single salts, CaCO 3 and CaSO 4 were dominant in synthetic seawater without Mg(OH) 2 . However, the occurrence of Mg(OH) 2 scales became a cause for concern if Ca ion was removed from seawater for the prevention of fouling and wetting. Therefore, Mg as well as Ca should be removed for proper fouling and wetting control. NaOH/Na 2 CO 3 softening was used for the removal of Ca and Mg ions. In this study, the FO/crystallization/RO hybrid process was analyzed comprehensively, including experimentation, modeling, and energy and cost estimation, to examine and improve its feasibility to seawater desalination. A new operating strategy by heating the FO process to 45 °C was suggested, and a detailed process design was conducted. A comparative analysis with the conventional seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) process was performed in terms of specific energy consumption (SEC) and specific water cost (SWC). The hybrid process can produce fresh water with SWC of 0.6964 $/m 3 , electrical SEC of 2.71 kWh/m 3 , and thermal SEC of 14.684 kWh/m 3 . Compared to the conventional SWRO process (SWC of 0.6890 $/m 3 and electrical SEC of 2.674 kWh/m 3 ), the hybrid process can produce water with comparable cost and energy consumption. An economic feasibility study that utilized the waste heat and the developed FO technology was also carried out to investigate future developments of the hybrid process. The SWC can be reduced to 0.6435 $/m 3 with free waste heat energy. The permeate water quality of the hybrid process was about half that of the conventional SWRO process on molar basis. This study reports distillation-based salt removal by Ohmic heating in a hybrid process, in which electrochemical oxidation (EO) and direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) are performed sequentially. In addition to anodically destructing the organics, the hybrid process also separated the sulfate-based electrolytes from treated water through distillation, without consuming external energy, owing to the temperature of the aqueous sulfate solution being elevated to 70 °C via resistive heating. The hybrid process treated organic compounds in a nonselective fashion, whereas DCMD alone did not completely reject (semi)volatile organics. Integrating EO with DCMD made the hybrid process resistant toward the wetting phenomenon; the process exhibited a steady distillate flux and salt rejection as the initial loading of amphiphilic sodium dodecyl sulfate was increased to 0.3 mM. Anodic persulfate formation from the sulfate and Ohmic heating caused an in situ yield of the sulfate radical in the feed solution; this eliminated membrane fouling, according to the observation that the water flux, which was drastically reduced upon adding alginate, was recovered immediately after an electric current was applied. The hybrid process concurrently decomposed spiked organics and removed naturally present inorganic ions in actual flue gas desulfurization wastewater, without an external supply of electrolyte and heat energy.

This study investigates the fouling mechanisms in membrane distillation, focusing on the impact of foulant type and membrane surface chemistry. Interaction forces between a surface-functionalized particle probe simulating a range of organic foulants and model surfaces, modified with different surface energy materials, were measured by atomic force microscopy. The measured interaction forces were compared to those calculated based on the experimentally determined surface energy components of the particle probe, model surface, and medium (i.e., water). Surfaces with low interfacial energy exhibited high attractive interaction forces with organic foulants, implying a higher fouling potential. In contrast, hydrophilic surfaces (i.e., surfaces with high interfacial energy) showed the lowest attractive forces with all types of foulants. We further performed fouling experiments with alginate, humic acid, and mineral oil in direct contact membrane distillation using polyvinylidene fluoride membranes modified with various materials to control membrane surface energy. The observed fouling behavior was compared to the interaction force data to better understand the underlying fouling mechanisms. A remarkable correlation was obtained between the evaluated interaction force data and the fouling behavior of the membranes with different surface energy. Membranes with low surface energy were fouled by hydrophobic, low surface tension foulants via "attractive" and subsequent "adsorptive" interaction mechanisms. Furthermore, such membranes have a higher fouling potential than membranes with high or ultralow surface energy.

In this study, the feasibility of forward osmosis (FO) hybridized with membrane distillation (MD) was systematically investigated for treating flue gas desulfurization (FGD) wastewater. FO experiments were conducted using raw FGD wastewater obtained from a coal-fired power plant in Korea. Severe membrane fouling in FO was observed since FGD wastewater contained various components (i.e., particles, colloids, organics, and ions). The combined fouling layer by particulates and scales was identified via scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Therefore, fouling control strategies were suggested and evaluated. Microfiltration (MF) pre-treatment was effective in removing particulates and mitigating the initial fouling. Antiscalant-blended draw solution (DS) could inhibit the formation of membrane scaling. With such fouling control schemes, FO achieved the highest recovery rate compared to other desalting processes (i.e., RO and MD), suggesting that FO is suitable for treating wastewater with high fouling potential and high TDS. Finally, the diluted DS was recovered by MD. MD could re-concentrate the diluted DS up to 50% recovery rate with no significant flux decline. Rapid flux decline was then observed due to membrane scaling. Since ultraviolet light emitting diodes (UV-LEDs) have emerged as an alternative light source for UV disinfection systems, enhancement of reactor performance is a demanding challenge to promote its practical application in water treatment process. This study explored the underlying mechanism of the inefficiency observed in flow-through mode UV disinfection tests to improve the light utilization of UV-LED applications. In particular, the disinfection performance of UV-LED reactors was evaluated using two different flow channel types, reservoir and pathway systems, in order to elucidate the impact of physical circumstances on germicidal efficiency as the light profile was adjusted. Overall, a significant reduction in germicidal efficiency was observed when exposure time was prolonged or a mixing chamber was integrated. Zeta analysis revealed that the repulsion rate between microorganisms decreased with UV fluence transfer, and that change might cause the shielding effect of UV delivery to target microorganisms. In line with the above findings, the reduction in efficiency intensified when opportunities for microbial collision increased. Thus, UV induced microbial aggregation was implicated as being a disinfection hindering factor, exerting its effect through uneven UV illumination. Ultimately, the results refuted the prevailing belief that UV has a cumulative effect. We found that the reservoir system achieved worse performance than the pathway system despite it providing 15 times higher UV fluence: the differences in germicidal efficiency were 1-log, 1.4-log and 1.7-log in the cases of P.aeruginosa, E.coli and S.aureus, respectively., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier B.V. Shale gas produced water (SGPW) treatment imposes greater technical challenges because of its high concentration of various contaminants. Membrane distillation crystallization (MDC) has a great potential to manage SGPW since it is capable of recovering both water and minerals at high rates, up to near a zero liquid discharge (ZLD) condition. To evaluate the feasibility of MDC for SGPW treatment, MDC performance indicators, such as water recovery rate, solid production rate (SPR) and specific energy consumption (SEC), were systematically investigated, to our knowledge for the first time, by using actual SGPW from Eagle Ford Shale (USA). The main operating parameters including feed cross-flow velocity (CFV) and crystallization temperature (T Cr ) were optimized by performing a series of MDC experiments. The results reported that water and minerals were effectively recovered with 84% of recovery rate and 2.72 kg/m 2 day of SPR under respective optimal operating conditions. Furthermore, the scale mechanism was firstly identified as limiting factor for MDC performance degradation. Lastly, SEC of MDC was estimated to be as low as 28.2 kWh/m 3 under ideal optimal operating conditions. Microcystin-LR (MC-LR) is a growing issue as it is toxic and difficult to remove in drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs). Mesoporous carbon (MC) is evaluated as an alternative adsorbent for MC-LR removal and compared with three widely-used powdered activated carbons (PACs). MC was more favorable for MC-LR removal than PACs. MC-LR adsorption on MC was a rapid process (k 2  = 1.02  ×  10 -4  g/μg/min) that completed within 15 min, while adsorption on PACs took 60 min. The maximum adsorption capacity of MC-LR was 18,008 μg/g (MC), which was higher than that of the PACs. Two mechanisms were associated with adsorption: the small hydro-dynamic diameter of MC in an aqueous solution increased the instantaneous attraction of MC-LR to its surface, and the numerous mesopores enhanced pore diffusion. The MC could remove MC-LR to meet the drinking water guidance level (1 μg/L) from an the MC-LR concentration range of 5-20 μg/L in drinking water sources, and 10 min of treatment was sufficient to meet this level (MC dose = 20 mg/L). The field-scale DWTP was operated by adding 1 or 5 mg/L MC to the mixing basin, and 49.49% and 74.50% of MC-LR was removed, respectively. Poly (aspartic acid sodium salt) (PAspNa) was evaluated for its potential as a novel draw solute in forward osmosis (FO). The inherent advantages of PAspNa, such as good water solubility, high osmotic pressure, and nontoxicity, were first examined through a series of physicochemical analyses and atomic-scale molecular dynamics simulations. Then, lab-scale FO tests were performed to evaluate its suitability in practical processes. Compared to other conventional inorganic solutes, PAspNa showed comparable water flux but significantly lower reverse solute flux, demonstrating its suitability as a draw solute. Moreover, fouling experiments using synthetic wastewater as a feed solution demonstrated that PAspNa reversely flowed to the feed side reduced inorganic scaling on the membrane active layer. The recyclability of PAspNa was studied using both nanofiltration (NF) and membrane distillation (MD) processes, and the results exhibited its ease of recovery. Fertiliser-drawn forward osmosis (FDFO) desalination has been recently studied as one feasible application of forward osmosis (FO) for irrigation. In this study, the potential of membrane scaling in the FDFO process has been investigated during the desalination of brackish groundwater (BGW). While most fertilisers containing monovalent ions did not result in any scaling when used as an FO draw solution (DS), diammonium phosphate (DAP or (NH4)2HPO4) resulted in significant scaling, which contributed to severe flux decline. Membrane autopsy using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and x-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis indicated that the reverse diffusion of DAP from the DS to the feed solution was primarily responsible for scale formation during the FDFO process. Physical cleaning of the membrane with deionised water at varying crossflow velocities was employed to evaluate the reversibility of membrane scaling and the extent of flux recovery. For the membrane scaled using DAP as DS, 80-90% of the original flux was recovered when the crossflow velocity for physical cleaning was the same as the crossflow velocity during FDFO desalination. However, when a higher crossflow velocity or Reynolds number was used, the flux was recovered almost completely, irrespective of the DS concentration used. Fouling behavior along the length of membrane module was systematically investigated by performing simple modeling and lab-scale experiments of forward osmosis (FO) membrane process. The flux distribution model developed in this study showed a good agreement with experimental results, validating the robustness of the model. This model demonstrated, as expected, that the permeate flux decreased along the membrane channel due to decreasing osmotic pressure differential across the FO membrane. A series of fouling experiments were conducted under the draw and feed solutions at various recoveries simulated by the model. The simulated fouling experiments revealed that higher organic (alginate) fouling and thus more flux decline were observed at the last section of a membrane channel, as foulants in feed solution became more concentrated. Furthermore, the water flux in FO process declined more severely as the recovery increased due to more foulants transported to membrane surface with elevated solute concentrations at higher recovery, which created favorable solution environments for organic adsorption. The fouling reversibility also decreased at the last section of the membrane channel, suggesting that fouling distribution on FO membrane along the module should be carefully examined to improve overall cleaning efficiency. A simple and rapid room-temperature aerosol deposition method was used to fabricate TiO(2) films for photokilling/photdegradation applications. TiO(2) particles were accelerated to supersonic speeds and fractured upon impacting a glass substrate to form a functional thin film, a process known as aerosol deposition. After deposition, the films were annealed at various temperatures, and their photokilling/photodegradation performances following ultraviolet (UV) exposure were evaluated by counting the number of surviving bacterial colonies, and by a methylene blue decolorization test. The photocatalytic performances of all TiO(2) films were obtained under weak UV exposure (0.6 mW/cm(2)). The film density, crystalline phase, and surface roughness (morphology) were measured by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, UV-visible spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy. The unique, self-assembled honeycomb structure of the aerosol deposited films contributed to the increase in surface area because of extreme roughness, which enhances the photokilling and photodegradation performance. Nonannealed films yielded the best photocatalytic performance due to their small crystalline sizes and large surface areas due to increased surface roughness.

In fertilizer-drawn forward osmosis (FDFO) desalination, the final nutrient concentration (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium (NPK)) in the product water is essential for direct fertigation and to avoid over fertilization. Our study with 11 selected fertilizers indicate that blending of two or more single fertilizers as draw solution (DS) can achieve significantly lower nutrient concentration in the FDFO product water rather than using single fertilizer alone. For example, blending KCl and NH(4)H(2)PO(4) as DS can result in 0.61/1.35/1.70 g/L of N/P/K, which is comparatively lower than using them individually as DS. The nutrient composition and concentration in the final FDFO product water can also be adjusted by selecting low nutrient fertilizers containing complementary nutrients and in different ratios to produce prescription mixtures. However, blending fertilizers generally resulted in slightly reduced bulk osmotic pressure and water flux in comparison to the sum of the osmotic pressures and water fluxes of the two individual DSs as used alone. The performance ratio or PR (ratio of actual water flux to theoretical water flux) of blended fertilizer DS was observed to be between the PR of the two fertilizer solutions tested individually. In some cases, such as urea, blending also resulted in significant reduction in N nutrient loss by reverse diffusion in presence of other fertilizer species.

Microbial community composition in a pilot-scale microfiltration plant for drinking water treatment was investigated using high-throughput pyrosequencing technology. Sequences of 16S rRNA gene fragments were recovered from raw water, membrane tank particulate matter, and membrane biofilm, and used for taxonomic assignments, estimations of diversity, and the identification of potential pathogens. Greater bacterial diversity was observed in each sample (1,133-1,731 operational taxonomic units) than studies using conventional methods, primarily due to the large number (8,164-22,275) of sequences available for analysis and the identification of rare species. Betaproteobacteria predominated in the raw water (61.1%), while Alphaproteobacteria were predominant in the membrane tank particulate matter (42.4%) and membrane biofilm (32.8%). The bacterial community structure clearly differed for each sample at both the genus and species levels, suggesting that different environmental and growth conditions were generated during membrane filtration. Moreover, signatures of potential pathogens including Legionella, Pseudomonas, Aeromonas, and Chromobacterium were identified, and the proportions of Legionella and Chromobacterium were elevated in the membrane tank particulate matter, suggesting a potential threat to drinking water treated by membrane filtration.

The impact of membrane surface characteristics and NOM on membrane performance has been investigated for varying pretreatment and membranes in a field study. Surface charge, hydrophobicity and roughness varied significantly among the four membranes used in the study. The membranes were tested in parallel following two different pretreatment processes, an enhanced Zenon ultrafiltration process (ZN) and a compact CSF process (Superpulsator (SP)) prior to RO membrane treatment for a total of eight integrated membrane systems. All membrane systems were exposed to the similar temperature, recovery and flux as well as chemical dosage. The membrane feed water qualities were statistically equivalent following ZN pretreatment and SP pretreatment except for NOM and SUVA. Membrane surface characteristics, NOM and SUVA measurements were used to describe mass transfer in a low-pressure RO integrated membrane system. Solute and water mass transfer coefficients (MTCs) were investigated for dependence on membrane surface properties and NOM mass loading. Inorganic MTCs were accurately described by a Gaussian distribution curve. Water productivity decreased with NOM loading and increased with contact angle and roughness. The negative effects of NOM loading on productivity were reduced as the negative charge on the membrane surface increased. Inorganic MTCs were also correlated to surface hydrophobicity and surface roughness. The permeability change of identical membranes was related to NOM loading, hydrophobicity and roughness. Organic fouling as measured by water, organic and inorganic mass transfer was less for membranes with higher hydrophilicity and roughness.

A photoelectrochemical (PEC) oxidation and flow-electrode capacitive deionization (FCDI) dual system was explored for the effective treatment of brackish water. Two anodic electrodes with electrochemically self-doped TiO2 arrays (blue-mesh/ blue-plate TiO2 nanotube arrays (BM-TNA & BP-TNA)) were fabricated by annealing at 600 °C, and applied for the treatment of a water system. Specifically, the BM-TNA confirmed lower electrical resistance and superior performance under multiple light source (UV-A, -B, and -C). Furthermore, the system generated powerful oxidizing reactive oxygen species (ROS), which were assessed via degradation of eight organic pollutants: bisphenol-A, 4-chlorophenol, cimetidine, sulfamethoxazole, benzoic acid, phenol, nitrobenzene, and acetaminophen. Decomposition efficiency was stable throughout a wide range of pH, and durability of the BM-TNA electrode was demonstrated through long-term operation. Concurrently, optimization of the FCDI process via key operational parameters (electrode mass loading, and applied voltage) achieved superior desalination performance, and specific energy consumption (SEC). In particular, increased mass loading enhanced charge transportation through the formation of stable charge-percolation pathways, leading to improved solution conductance. Abstract Internally staged design (ISD) was introduced as a method to lower front reverse osmosis (RO) element fluxes, yielding operational benefits. Systematic selection of the best ISD combinations has not been conducted as it is dependent on operating conditions (i.e., RO recovery and average flux). This study aimed to optimize seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) operations using ISD for better product water quality and energy efficiency. A total of 36 ISD combinations were configured with three commercial SWRO membranes and systematically examined under varying operating conditions which were simulations of typical SWRO operation. A Pareto-optimal front, a non-dominated feasible solution set, was created to understand the tradeoff relationship between permeate quality and specific energy consumption while considering all parameters. The Pareto-optimal front was classified into five phases, and an analysis of phase changes provided optimal parameter settings for SWRO operation. However, the occurrence of colloidal fouling altered optimal ISD combinations on the Pareto-optimal front. Particularly, when SWRO membranes were fouled at high-recovery and -flux conditions, ISD combinations employing three different membrane types exhibited superior performance in terms of energy efficiency. With these results, the best SWRO operation was suggested depending on its performance requirements, and the advantages of ISD were further delineated. Membrane-based desalting processes including reverse osmosis (RO), forward osmosis (FO), and membrane distillation (MD) were systematically evaluated for concentrating RO brine. Basic characteristics of membrane processes were first examined. Commercial polyamide RO exhibited higher water and lower salt permeability coefficients than cellulose FO membrane. However, salt rejection by FO seemed to be higher than RO primarily due to the hindrance of reverse draw solute flux. The water flux of MD comparable to RO was obtained when temperature gradient was more than 20–30°C. The applicability of RO, FO, and MD was further tested with real brine obtained from full-scale RO plant processing brackish water. Results demonstrated that water flux was not significantly reduced in MD, while severe flux decline was observed in both RO and FO at high recovery. To elucidate major causes of different flux behaviors, the fouled membrane surfaces were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. Foulant analysis suggested that CaCO3scaling occurred particularly at high water recovery, which was in good agreement with water quality simulation. CaCO3scaling, however, had only small impact on flux behavior in MD. Static mixers are frequently used in water treatment applications, for example as inline coagulators. A desired geometry of a static mixer is one that results in low mixing energy and high mixing efficiency. Triply periodic minimal surfaces (TPMS) are architectures which are described mathematically such that the mean curvature is zero at any point on their surface. In this work, novel static mixers based on TPMS architectures were modeled as mixers of aqueous feeds, using several computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tools and compared to the state of the art Kenics mixer. The CFD models were verified experimentally. Four TPMS geometries were studied: Gyroid, Diamond, IWP, and Primitive. The dimensionless power number (K p) was used as a metric to compare the energy requirement of the mixers, while the coefficient of variance (COV) was used to quantify their mixing efficiency. In single element mixers, three TPMS geometries; Gyroid, Diamond and IWP, outperformed the Kenics in terms of mixing energy, with a comparable or better mixing efficiency. In multiple element mixers, however, the Kenics outperformed the TPMS mixers in term of mixing efficiency, while the latter's energy performance remained superior. Subsequent design modifications of the multi-element TPMS mixers were conducted, including the hybridization of TPMS and Kenics architectures. The changes resulted in mixing efficiencies comparable to the Kenics, but with at least 25 % decrease in energy requirements. The demand for ultrapure water (UPW) has been increased over the past decades. UPW production now occupies an almost equivalent position with seawater desalination in the world water market, fulfilling the demands of various industrial purposes. As an extremely low level of contaminants is required, the typical UPW production system combines 5 to10 purification technologies including ultrafiltration (UF), reverse osmosis (RO) and ion exchanger (IX). In recent years, RO has been at the forefront of this elaborate process as the majority of impurity rejections is carried out with it. This study provides a comprehensive review of the rising role of RO to satisfy the technical requirements in the UPW sector, with an emphasis on electronic industrial applications. The major transitions in recent UPW production are first reviewed: 1) ever-increasing water quality demand, 2) introduction of electrochemical processes into the water polishing stage and 3) UPW waste reclamation, all of which emphasize the enhanced responsibility of RO for producing cleaner permeate. Additionally, the noteworthy insights of RO technologies for the purpose of UPW are summarized, specifically focusing on RO configurations appropriate for UPW, scaling mitigation techniques for high recovery operation, and cleaning methods for maintenance. Nanofiltration (NF) membrane has been increasingly applied for brackish water treatment and often integrated to conventional water treatment consisting of coagulation, sedimentation, and filtration (CSF) processes. In this study, the corrosion potential of NF treated water was examined in lab-scale corrosion loop tests, and the optimum design of NF process blended with CSF treated water was proposed for iron pipe corrosion prevention. Severe iron corrosion was observed when exposed to NF treated water, which was manifested by more negative values of Langelier saturation index (LSI), mainly due to high removal of hardness (Ca 2 + ) and alkalinity (HCO 3 − ). Thus it was suggested that high corrosion potential by NF could be controlled by blending with CSF treated water. SEM, XRD, and XRF analyses clearly identified reduced corrosion, evidenced by less iron oxyhydroxides and more calcium carbonate on iron pipe surface, with decreasing NF treated water in blending. NF process simulation also demonstrated the improved stability of blended waters by decreasing flux and increasing recovery. Lastly, the LSI model reflecting blending ratio and NF membrane performance was newly developed for the design and operation of NF blending systems in order to lower the corrosion risk of pipe distribution systems through optimizing NF operating conditions. Membrane processes have attracted considerable attention in the field of water treatment because of their excellent compactness, convenient operation and management, and relatively low energy consumption. However, fouling is a significant technical challenge. Electrically conductive membrane (ECM) technology has recently emerged as a promising alternative owing to its novel and effective mechanisms and outstanding fouling control efficiency. However, because ECM technology is still in the early stages of research, its maturity is low, and fundamental research on the mechanism is insufficient. In this critical review, the mechanisms of the ECM for fouling control were systematically elucidated and categorized as electrochemical oxidation and reduction, electrostatic interactions, and electrolysis. Subsequently, an extensive and comprehensive literature survey of ECM applications was conducted. The current state of the application and performance of ECM technology was evaluated. The operation and modification strategies of ECM research are discussed based on an accurate understanding and evaluation of the fundamental mechanisms and level of actual application of ECM technology for fouling control. Consequently, topics for future academic research and practical applications of the ECM are proposed. The formation of toxic disinfection by-products during water disinfection due to the presence of bromide and iodide is a major concern. Current treatment technologies such as membrane, adsorption and electrochemical processes have been known to have limitations such as high energy demand and excessive chemical use. In this study, the selectivity between bromide and iodide, and their removal in membrane capacitive deionisation (MCDI) was evaluated. The results showed that iodide was more selectively removed over bromide from several binary feed waters containing bromide and iodide under various initial concentrations and applied voltages. Even in the presence of significant background concentration of sodium chloride, definite selectivity of iodide over bromide was observed. The high partial-charge transfer coefficient of iodide compared to bromide could be a feasible explanation for high iodide selectivity since both bromide and iodide have similar ionic charge and hydrated radius. The result also shows that MCDI can be a potential alternative for the removal of bromide and iodide during water treatment. In this study, a new forward osmosis (FO)-based system designed to integrate CO 2 capture and water treatment has been proposed as an innovative green technology for fossil-fuel power stations. Monoethanolamine (MEA), the most commonly used solvent for chemical absorption of CO 2 from flue gas, plays a key role in the suggested system, acting as both a chemical absorbent for CO 2 separation and a draw solution for water treatment and/or production; CO 2 -lean and CO 2 -rich MEA solutions were evaluated as water extraction agent. Higher FO performance (in particular noticeably less reverse solute flux) was observed with the rich MEA liquid, mainly due to the effect of CO 2 dissolution. From a series of FO experiments conducted with saline feed solutions, it was confirmed that the rich MEA absorbent can extract water molecules efficiently from various water sources including highly saline streams (1.5 M NaCl or more) with decent performance. Because of the high osmotic potential of the rich MEA draw solution, treatment of flue gas desulfurization (FGD) wastewater, which is typically difficult to treat owing to its high ion concentration and scaling potential, was also accomplished successfully, presenting a concentration rate of more than 75%. Membrane distillation (MD) was adopted as an intermediate process between the FO-water extraction and CO 2 desorption steps, and the test results indicated that the production of purified water from the diluted rich MEA absorbent can be achieved by the MD process. The proposed hybrid FO system is expected to address environmental concerns related to fossil fuel combustion power plants carbon emission and water stress – by allowing CO 2 capture and water treatment simultaneously. In this study, a novel hollow fiber nanofiltration (HFNF) was investigated for treating real Cijengkol river water in Indonesia. Ultrafiltration (UF) pretreatment was performed to evaluate the effect of UF on the HFNF performance. The water quality of the raw water and permeate of the UF, HFNF, and UF-HFNF hybrid was first characterized. UF could remove only solids, while both nanofiltration (NF) and the UF-NF hybrid achieved a high removal efficiency for impurities in river water, meeting the standards for drinking water quality. However, severe organic fouling occurred in the HFNF membranes. To effectively control organic fouling, various cleaning methods were investigated, and then the analyses of gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and fluorescence excitation emission matrix (FEEM) were conducted on backwashing wastewater to identify the cleaning mechanism. First, hydraulic flushing and backwashing were evaluated, and both methods achieved higher than 90% efficiency particularly for high-molecular-weight organic foulants (>1000 Da). However, the cleaning efficiency decreased during long-term operation because of the low removal efficiency of low-molecular-weight (LMW) organics. Hence, chemically enhanced backwashing (CEBW) (i.e., 5 ppm and 10 ppm NaOCl) was employed to enhance the cleaning efficiency. The results showed that membrane fouling was easily controlled by CEBW with 95% removal efficiency. To reduce the usage of chemicals, CO 2 scouring, and CO 2 nucleation backwashing were also examined. CO 2 nucleation backwashing exhibited a better efficiency than CO 2 scouring because of the additional effect of CO 2 nucleation on the HFNF membrane surface. Interestingly, a relatively high removal efficiency for fulvic acid-like organic fouling was observed in both CEBW and CO 2 nucleation backwashing, whereas tryptophan and tyrosine-like proteins, soluble microbial products (SMPs), and humic-like organics were hardly removed by acidic condition (pH < 6.5) or high shear force, leading to a low cleaning efficiency of CO 2 nucleation backwashing.
