The widespread existence of antibiotics in the environment has attracted growing concerns regarding the potential adverse effects on aquatic organisms, ecosystems, and human health even at low concentrations. Extensive efforts have been devoted to developing new methods for effective elimination of antibiotics from wastewater. Herein, a novel process of Fe 2+ catalytically enhanced vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) irradiation was proposed as a promising approach for the removal of antibiotic trimethoprim (TMP) in water. Compared with UVC photolysis, VUV photolysis, and UVC/Fe 2+ , VUV/Fe 2+ could increase the pseudo-first-order reaction rate constant of TMP removal by 6.6-38.4 times and the mineralization rate by 36.5%-59.9%. The excellent performance might originate from the synergistic effect of VUV and Fe 2+ , i.e., VUV irradiation could effectively split water and largely accelerate the Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ cycle to generate more reactive oxygen species (ROS). EPR results indicated that • OH and O 2 •- were identified as the main ROS in the UVC/Fe 2+ and VUV/Fe 2+ processes, while • OH, O 2 •- , and 1 O 2 were involved in the VUV process. The operating parameters, such as Fe 2+ dosage and initial TMP contents, were evaluated and optimized. Up to 8 aromatic intermediates derived from hydroxylation, demethylation, carbonylation, and methylene group cleavage were identified by UPLC-QTOF-MS/MS technique, the possible pathways of TMP degradation were proposed. The electro-Fenton (EF) based on gas-diffusion electrodes (GDEs) reveals promising application prospective towards recalcitrant organics degradation because such GDEs often yields superior H 2 O 2 generation efficiency and selectivity. However, the low efficiency of Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ cycle with GDEs is always considered to be the limiting step for the EF process. In this study, activated carbon fiber (ACF) was firstly employed as co-catalyst to facilitate the performance of antibiotic cefaclor (CEC) decomposition in EF process. It was found that the addition of ACF co-catalyst achieved a rapid Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ cycling, which significantly enhanced Fenton's reaction and hydroxyl radicals ( • OH) generation. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results indicated that the functional groups on ACF surface are related to the conversion of Fe 3+ into Fe 2+ . Moreover, DMSO probing experiment confirmed the enhanced • OH production in EF + ACF system compared to conventional EF system. When inactive BDD and Ti 4 O 7 /Ti anodes were paired to EF system, the addition of ACF could significantly improve mineralization degree. However, a large amount of toxic byproducts, including chlorate (ClO 3 - ) and perchlorate (ClO 4 - ), were generated in these EF processes, especially for BDD anode, due to their robust oxidation capacity. Higher mineralization efficiency and less toxic ClO 4 - generation were obtained in the EF + ACF process with Ti 4 O 7 /Ti anode. A comparative degradation of antibiotic cefaclor (CEC) between Ti/Ti 4 O 7 and Ti/RuO 2 anodes, in terms of degradation kinetics, mineralization efficiency, and formation of toxic chlorate (ClO 3 - ) and perchlorate (ClO 4 - ), was performed with electrochemical-oxidation (EO), electro-Fenton (EF), and photoelectro-Fenton (PEF) processes. Besides, CEC degradation by EF with boron-doped diamond (BDD) anode was also tested. Results showed CEC decays always followed pseudo-first-order kinetics, with increasing apparent rate constants in the sequence of EO < EF < PEF. The mineralization efficiency of the processes with Ti/Ti 4 O 7 anode was higher than that of Ti/RuO 2 anode, but slightly lower than that of BDD anode. Under the optimal conditions, 94.8% mineralization was obtained in Ti/Ti 4 O 7 -PEF, which was much higher than 64.4% in Ti/RuO 2 -PEF. The use of Ti/RuO 2 gave no generation of ClO 3 - or ClO 4 - , while the use of Ti/Ti 4 O 7 yielded a small amount of ClO 3 - and trace amounts of ClO 4 - . Conversely, the use of BDD led to the highest generation of ClO 3 - and ClO 4 - . The reaction mechanism was studied systematically by detecting the generated H 2 O 2 and • OH. The initial N of CEC was released as NH 4 + and, in smaller proportion, as NO 3 - . A comparative study on the mineralization of antibiotic trimethoprim (TMP) in neutral medium was investigated by applying irradiation with five types of ultraviolet lamps. Among these lamps, the whole envelope of one lamp contained ordinary quartz, which could only transmit ultraviolet-C (UVC) light. For the other four lamps, approximately one tenth, a quarter, a half, and full of envelopes were comprised of high-purity synthetic quartz, which can transmit both vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) and UVC light. TMP decay was well fitted to pseudo-first-order reaction kinetics and occurred more quickly as the VUV intensity increased. Poor mineralization was achieved in the absence of VUV light, whereas the mineralization efficiency was also enhanced with increasing VUV intensity. The presence of hydroxyl radicals ( • OH), superoxide radicals (O 2 •- ) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) during VUV photolysis of water was confirmed by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis. Appropriate radical quenching experiments and fluorescent molecular probe detection provided the evidence that • OH played a significant role in TMP mineralization. Higher VUV intensity favored the generation of H 2 O 2 and • OH. The evolution of NH 4 + and NO 3 - as well as carboxylic acids (formic, acetic, oxalic, and oxamic acids) released in the treated solution were quantified. Ten aromatic intermediates were also identified by UPLC-QTOF-MS. Thereby, a plausible reaction sequence for TMP mineralization in VUV/UVC photolysis was finally proposed., (© 2023. Flow-through heterogeneous electro-Fenton (FHEF) process shows a broad prospect for refractory organic pollutants removal. However, maintaining a long-term service life of higher catalytic cathode is crucial for the development of cathode materials, especially for iron-functionalized cathode operated under harsh conditions. In this study, a novel bimetallic CC@FeOCl-Cu composite was synthesized through one-step calcination, coupled with a series of microstructure characterization methodology, including XRD, SEM-EDS, XPS, and FTIR. The superior catalytic activity of CC@FeOCl-Cu could be ascribed to Fe-Cu synergy and better dispersion of FeOCl nanosheets. With the optimal Cu:Fe ratio of 1:60, the bifunctional ACF/CC@FeOCl-Cu cathode was employed in FHEF process, exhibiting an outstanding performance for sulfamethoxazole (SMX) removal over a wide pH range (3.0-9.0). Comparison of experimental results indicated that the ACF/CC@FeOCl-Cu-FHEF process showed higher performance than ACF/CC@FeOCl-FHEF and homogeneous EF processes. The average SMX removal efficiency was 98% and TOC removal efficiency was more than 57% even after 10 cycles. Radical quenching experiments and electron spin resonance test confirmed that • OH was the primary active species. More • OH was generated in the ACF/CC@FeOCl-Cu-FHEF process because the doping of Cu could enhance catalytic activity of cathode. A novel active Ce-doped Ti 4 O 7 (Ti/Ti 4 O 7 -Ce) electrode was prepared and evaluated for improvement of the refractory pollutants degradation efficiency in Electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOPs). The results showed that the addition of Ce in Ti/Ti 4 O 7 electrode leading to great impact on •OH generation rate and electrode stability compared to pristine Ti/Ti 4 O 7 electrode. Ti/Ti 4 O 7 -Ce electrode presented efficient oxidation capacity for pharmaceutical pollutant atenolol (ATL) in EAOPs, which could be attributed to the improvement of indirect oxidation mediated by electro-generated •OH, as the amount of •OH production was 16.5% higher than that in Ti/Ti 4 O 7 within 120 min. The operational conditions greatly influenced the ATL degradation. The degradation efficiency of ATL increased as the current density, the degradation efficiency reached 100% under pH 4, but it just removed 81% of ATL under pH 10 after 120 min treatment. Results also suggested that the inhibiting effect from the ATL degradation was mostly associated with the decreased oxidation capacity induced by water hardness and natural organic matter (NOM). It displayed a satisfactory durability after 40 cycles of experimental detections in this research. A novel lanthanum manganese oxide (La 0.96 Mn 0.96 O 3 , LMO) was synthesized for advanced phosphate removal to alleviate water eutrophication process. The adsorbent had a specific surface area of 18.51 m 2 /g with pH at point of zero charge of 6.6; exhibited excellent phosphate adsorption capacity of 168.4 mg/g; performed well in a wide pH range from 3 to 10. The phosphate removal was not interfered by coexisting ions. The adsorbent remained 94.8% of its initial adsorption efficiency after reused for four times. Phosphate adsorption process conformed to pseudo-second-order model (R 2 =0.992) and Langmuir model (R 2 =0.935). Ligand exchange and electrostatic interaction played important roles in phosphate removal. In addition, the actual sewage secondary effluent was used to further verify the phosphate removal performance of LMO. For practical water treatment, the LMO showed high phosphate removal efficiency of 83.4% and low residual P of 0.1 mg/L. The synthesis of multifunctional cathode with high-efficiency and stable catalytic activity for simultaneously producing and activating H 2 O 2 is an effective way for promoting the performance of heterogeneous electro-Fenton process (HEF). In addition, accelerating mass transfer by adopting a flow-through reactor is also great importance because of its better utilization of catalysts and adequate contact of the contaminant with the oxidants generated on the electrode surface. Herein, a novel flow-through HEF (FHEF) system was designed for the degradation of trimethoprim (TMP) using bifunctional cathode with a sandwich structure FeOCl nanosheets loaded onto carbon cloth (CC) and activated carbon fiber (ACF) (FeOCl/CC/ACF). The cathode exhibited excellent performance in activating H 2 O 2 for the in-situ generation of hydroxyl radicals ( • OH). The electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements and radical quenching tests proved that the high production of • OH in the FHEF process was favorable to the high catalytic efficiency. 25 mg L -1 TMP was entirely degraded after 60 min, with the TOC removal of 62.6% (180 min) at pH 6.8, 9.0 mA cm -2 , and flux rate 210 mL min -1 . Moreover, the degradation rate still could reach 83% (60 min) after 10 cycles without obvious valence and crystal phase changes. Simultaneously, the current utilization rate has also been greatly enhanced, with an average current efficiency of 69.9% and a low energy consumption of 0.28 kWh kg -1 . The reasonable degradation pathways for TMP were proposed based on the UPLC-QTOF-MS/MS results. Finally, the results of toxicological simulation showed a declining trend in the toxicity of the samples during TMP degradation. In this work, heterogeneous catalytic ozonation for the treatment of bio-treated saccharin sodium production wastewater (BSSW) was comprehensively investigated with pilot- and full-scale systems, with special emphasis on the effects of Cu 2+ in the original wastewater on catalyst activity. The results of semi-batch and continuous experiments show that heterogeneous catalytic ozonation was effective in removing organic compounds from high-salinity wastewater and that Cu 2+ in the original wastewater had a substantial effect on the performance of the process. The retention of 0.15 mM Cu 2+ in BSSW increased the chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal by 31% in semi-batch reactor with heterogeneous catalytic ozonation. The stable COD removal efficiencies ranged from 74% to 66.4% for a 9-month operation, indicating that Cu 2+ with an appropriate concentration in the original BSSW not only improved the COD removal efficiencies but also inhibited catalyst deactivation; catalyst deactivation was mainly caused by the deposition of inorganic salts on the catalyst surface. Cu 2+ combined with some anions to inhibit the formation and deposition of inorganic salts that could easily cause deactivation. The deposited copper salts were readily eliminated, especially during backflushing operations. Moreover, in a full-scale study, heterogeneous catalytic ozonation with 0.15 mM Cu 2+ in BSSW exhibited stable COD removal efficiencies (51%-83%) after over 3 years of operation. Pulp and paper wastewater (PPWW) contains numerous refractory and harmful contaminants that require advanced treatment to meet the discharge criteria. This study compared the efficacy of two PPWW treatments: ultraviolet/peroxymonosulfate (UV/PMS) and ultraviolet/H 2 O 2 (UV/H 2 O 2 ) working under similar circumstances. The initial pH value, oxidant dosage, UV radiation intensity, and pseudo-first-order constant k obs were systematically studied in both systems. Optimally, the UV/PMS process produced an effluent of higher quality than the UV/H 2 O 2 , as measured by the removal efficiencies of chemical oxygen demand (COD) in 60 min, which were 48.2 and 64.3% for the respective UV/H 2 O 2 and UV/PMS processes and corresponding k obs values of 0.0102 and 0.0159 min -1 , respectively. Radical scavenging experiments demonstrated that •OH was the primary reactive oxygen species in UV/H 2 O 2 process, and •OH and SO 4 - • in the UV/PMS process. Moreover, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy and gas chromatography coupled mass spectroscopy analyses showed that deep treatment of petroleum hydrocarbons with carbon chain lengths greater than 18 and macromolecular semi-volatile organic compounds in paper wastewater is difficult, whereas the UV/PMS process can significantly improve the removal of amides, esters, phenols, and other aromatic compounds.

In this work, both Electrocoagulation (EC) and Fered-Fenton (FF) technologies were used to treat reverse osmosis concentrates (ROC) from petrochemical production. The toxicity reduction capacity and mechanism were comparatively assessed during these two treatments. The results showed that FF exhibited higher capacity to reduce toxicity than EC in the 30 min treatment, which could be attributed to the removal of organic pollutants and heavy metals. The results showed that the ROC contained organics with molecular weight of 1200 g mol -1 and 220 g mol -1 , which mainly consisted of the soluble microbial by-product-like and humic acid-like substances. The removal of these organics directly led to the noticeable toxicity reduction. Alkanes, haloalkanes, ketones, PAHs, and other four organic pollutants were the dominant species in the ROC, and the removal of small molecular weight organic pollutants played an essential role in reducing toxicity. FF exhibited stronger capacity to remove PAHs, BTEXS and haloalkanes, and the removal efficiencies for the PAHs were in the following order: 5-ring > 4-ring > 3-ring > 2-ring. The promotion of heavy metals removal appeared to be favorable for decreasing toxicity in ROC. This study illustrated the mechanism of the toxicity reduction and the characteristics of pollutants removal during FF and EC treatments, and provided valuable guidance for petrochemical manufacturing to the toxicity reduction and operation of wastewater treatment facilities., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are an important class of water pollutants because of their known ecological and human toxicity. Electrocoagulation (EC) is a promising technology for mitigating industrial wastewater pollution, but the removal and transformation of PAHs during EC treatment has not yet been understood. Therefore, a paper-making wastewater effluent (PMWW) was employed in this study to investigate the relationship between PAHs' removal and transformation during EC treatment. The results show that 86% of PAHs were effectively removed not only by the electro-oxidation reactions, but also by adsorption onto Fe hydroxide flocs. The removal and transformation of PAHs were related to the number of rings in their structures. Some PAHs composed of two aromatic rings (e.g., naphthaline and dimethylnaphthalene) were produced from humic acid-like and fulvic acid-like organics in PMWW, while PAHs with three to four rings were degraded, thus being removed efficiently. Therefore, PAH transformation during EC treatment exerted double-sided effects on the removal of PAHs; the net effect appeared to be positive. The effect of acidification and heat treatment of raw red mud (RM) and fly ash (FA) on the sorption of phosphate was studied in parallel experiments. The result shows that a higher efficiency of phosphate removal was acquired by the activated samples than by the raw ones. The sample prepared by using the RM stirred with 0.25 M HCl for 2h (RM0.25), as well as another sample prepared by heating the RM at 700 degrees C for 2h (RM700), registered the maximum removal of phosphate (99% removal of phosphate). This occurred when they were used in the phosphate sorption studies conducted at pH 7.0 and 25 degrees C with the initial PO(4)(3-) concentration of 155 mg P/l. The FA samples treated in the same way described above can achieve 7.0 and 8.2 mg P/l phosphate removal for FA0.25 and FA700 respectively, corresponding to 45.2% and 52.9% removal. The activated materials performed higher phosphate removal over broader pH range compared with the raw ones. The influences of various factors, such as initial pH and initial phosphate concentration on the sorption capacity were also studied in batch equilibration technique. Solution pH significantly influenced the sorption. Each sample achieved the maximal removal of phosphate at pH 7.0. The amount of phosphate removal increased with the solute concentration. The Freundlich and Langmuir models were used to simulate the sorption equilibrium. The results indicate that the Langmuir model has a better correlation with the experimental data than the Freundlich model.
