The COVID-19 pandemic changed the consumption of many drugs, among which antidepressants stand out. This review evaluated the frequency of antidepressant use before and after COVID-19. Once the most consumed antidepressants were identified, detecting a variation in the frequency of consumption on the different continents, an overview of their life cycle was carried out, specifying which antidepressants are mostly detected and the places where there is a greater concentration. In addition, the main metabolites of the most used antidepressants were also investigated. A correlation between the most consumed drugs and the most detected was made, emphasizing the lack of information on the occurrence of some of the most consumed antidepressants. Subsequently, studies on the effects on aquatic life were also reviewed, evaluated through different living beings (fish, crustaceans, molluscs, planktonic crustaceans and algae). Likewise, many of the most used antidepressants lack studies on potential adverse effects on aquatic living beings. This review underscores the need for further research, particularly focusing on the life cycle of the most prescribed antidepressants. The pervasive use of antibiotics has raised substantial environmental concerns, especially regarding their temporal and spatial distribution across diverse water systems. This study addressed the gap in comprehensive research on antibiotic contamination during different hydrological periods, focusing on the Jilin section of the Songliao Basin in Northeast China, an area with severe winter ice cover. The study examined the occurrence, distribution, influencing factors, and potential ecological risks of prevalent antibiotic contaminants. Findings revealed antibiotic concentrations ranging from 239.64 to 965.81 ng/L, with antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) at 5.22 × 10 -2 16S rRNA -1 and antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) up to 5.76 log 10  CFU/mL. Ecological risk assessments identified significant risks to algae from oxytetracycline, erythromycin, and amoxicillin. Redundancy analysis and co-occurrence networks with ordinary least squares (OLS) demonstrated that the dispersion of ARGs and ARB is significantly influenced by environmental factors such as total organic carbon (TOC), total phosphorus (TP), total nitrogen (TN), fluoride (F⁻), and nitrate (NO₃⁻). These elements, along with mobile genetic elements (MGEs), play crucial roles in ARG patterns (R 2  = 0.94, p ≤ 0.01). Microplastics (MPs) are a developing concern in marine environments, with scientists concentrating more on their effects on various creatures. Sea cucumbers (SCs), as suspension and deposit feeders, are expected to be exposed to and consume MPs in their habitat. The purpose of this methodical review is to gather and integrate accessible research on the presence and effects of MPs on SCs. A systematic search of relevant databases yielded relevant papers exploring the occurrence of MPs in SC habitats as well as the possible effects of MP intake on SCs. Bibliometric analysis was also conducted to collect and analyze a large volume of data. Then the papers were sorted (a total of 249) related to the occurrence and effects of MPs in SCs. Finally, targeted data were collected from the articles for the study. The review emphasizes the ubiquity of MPs in SC ecosystems, citing studies that found high quantities in coastal areas and sediment. MPs have a variety of effects on SCs, with some studies indicating that they lower eating efficiency, affect behavior, and cause tissue damage. However, there is still no unanimity on the overall effects of MP exposure on SCs. This review gives a complete summary of the present state of information about the incidence and impact of MPs on SCs, highlighting the need for additional study in this area. Aggravated accumulation of emerging micropollutants (EMs) in aquatic environments, especially after COVID-19, raised significant attention throughout the world for safety concerns. This article reviews the sources and occurrence of 25 anti-COVID-19 related EMs in wastewater. It should be pointed out that the concentration of anti-COVID-19 related EMs, such as antivirals, plasticizers, antimicrobials, and psychotropic drugs in wastewater increased notably after the pandemic. Furthermore, the ecotoxicity, ecological, and health risks of typical EMs before and after COVID-19 were emphatically compared and analyzed. Based on the environmental health prioritization index method, the priority control sequence of typical EMs related to anti-COVID-19 was identified. Lopinavir (LPV), venlafaxine (VLX), di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), benzalkonium chloride (BAC), triclocarban (TCC), di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP), citalopram (CIT), diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP), and triclosan (TCS) were identified as the top-priority control EMs in the post-pandemic period. Besides, some insights into the toxicity and risk assessment of EMs were also provided. Emerging contaminants are pervasive in aquatic environments globally, encompassing pharmaceuticals, personal care products, steroid hormones, phenols, biocides, disinfectants and various other compounds. Concentrations of these contaminants are detected ranging from ng/L to μg/L. Even at trace levels, these contaminants can pose significant risks to ecosystems and human health. This article systematically summarises and categorizes data on the concentrations of 54 common emerging contaminants found in the influent and effluent of wastewater treatment plants across various geographical regions: North America, Europe, Oceania, Africa, and Asia. It reviews the occurrence and distribution of these contaminants, providing spatial and causal analyses based on data from these regions. Notably, the maximum concentrations of the pollutants observed vary significantly across different regions. Fibrous microplastics (FMPs), a unique class of microplastics, are increasingly recognized as a significant environmental threat due to their ubiquitous presence and potential risks to ecological and human health. This review provides a comprehensive overview of FMPs, including their sources, prevalence in various environmental media, and potential impacts. FMPs, which can be found in over 90 % of certain environmental samples, originate from a diverse range of sources, including synthetic textiles, landfill waste, industrial emissions, and atmospheric deposition. These persistent pollutants pose a threat to both terrestrial and marine ecosystems. Their insidious presence can lead to ingestion by organisms, potentially disrupting ecosystems and posing risks to human health. Addressing the challenge of FMPs requires a multi-faceted approach. Reducing the production and use of synthetic fibers, implementing effective waste management practices, and developing new technologies to remove FMPs from wastewater and the broader environment are all crucial components of the solution. This study investigated the regional, seasonal, and species abundance and characteristics of microplastics (MPs) in bivalves from Qingdao, China and assessed the dietary exposure of MPs through bivalve consumption. The average abundance was 1.17 ± 1.07 items/individual or 0.17 ± 0.22 items/g wet weight. Fiber was the dominant shape (91.5 %). The average size of MPs was 995.63 ± 796.59 μm. Rayon, PE, and PET contributed mostly to the MPs composition. There were no significant regional or seasonal differences in MPs abundance (p > 0.05), while there were significant species differences (p < 0.05) when describing the abundance by wet weight. The estimated daily intakes of MPs through bivalve consumption by general population, consumer only population, and coastal residents in China were 3.32 × 10 -3 , 0.08, and 0.16 μg/kg BW, respectively. Identifying priority pollutants in wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluents is crucial for optimizing monitoring efforts, improving regulations, and developing targeted mitigation strategies. Despite the presence of numerous trace organic pollutants in WWTP effluents, a comprehensive prioritization scheme is lacking, hindering effective control. This study screened 216 micropollutants, including pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and industrial chemicals, which had been detected in effluents from 46 WWTPs across China. A multi-criteria prioritization method was developed, considering exposure potential based on median concentrations and detection frequencies, as well as hazard potential determined by persistence, bioaccumulation, in vitro toxicity, and in vivo toxicity. Pollutants with low exposure or hazard potential were filtered out, and a priority index was calculated to rank the remaining 59 substances. The top 15 priority pollutants included regulated persistent organic pollutants like perfluorooctanoic acid and their alternatives such as perfluorobutane sulfonate, pesticide transformation products, and emerging contaminants such as bisphenol A, which are not currently regulated in WWTP effluents. This work examined the occurrence characteristics and ecological risks of 31 antibiotics across five classes and seven ARGs in the surface waters of Gaoyou Lake. A total of 27 antibiotics, spanning four classes, were detected in the surface waters of Gaoyou Lake, with an overall concentration ranging from 57.5 to 114 ng/L and an average of 78.8 ng/L. Sulfonamide antibiotics exhibited the highest average concentration at 32.7 ng/L. Spatial analysis revealed that antibiotic concentration levels in the western region of the lake were higher than those in other areas. Similarly, ARGs were most abundant in this area, with sulfonamide ARGs demonstrating a notably higher mean abundance than other ARGs. Correlation analysis revealed strong positive associations between sul1 and several antibiotics, including sulfadimidine, sulfamethoxazole, ciprofloxacin, lincomycin, clindamycin, erythromycin, and intl1 (P < 0.05), with intra-group correlations among sulfonamide ARGs exceeding those between different ARG groups. Ecological risk assessment indicated that erythromycin and sulfamethoxazole presented medium risks, whereas roxithromycin, azithromycin, and lincomycin were associated with low risks to aquatic organisms. The ecological risk proportions across monitoring sites were primarily low (10.6%) and moderate (16.7%), with no high-risk areas identified and 72.7% presenting no risk. The pollution resulting from the emergence of the contaminant perchlorate is anticipated to have a substantial effect on the water environment in the foreseeable future. Considerable research efforts have been devoted to investigating treatment technologies for addressing perchlorate contamination, garnering widespread international interest in recent decades. A systematic review was conducted utilizing the Web of Science, Scopus, and Science Direct databases to identify pertinent articles published from 2000 to 2024. A total of 551 articles were chosen for in-depth examination utilizing VOS viewer. Bibliometric analysis indicated that countries such as China, the United States, Chile, India, Japan, and Korea have been prominent contributors to the research on this topic. Various remediation methods for perchlorate contamination, such as adsorption, ion-exchange, membrane filtration, chemical reduction, and biological reduction, have been suggested. Environmental occurrence and risks of novel synthetic phenolic antioxidants (SPAs) remain largely unclear. By using a typical algae (Chlorella pyrenoidosa) as model organism, we evaluated the ecological risks of both traditional and novel SPAs, based on their concentrations in water, sediment, and soil collected from the Yangtze River Delta, China. Detection frequencies (DFs) of 10 novel SPAs were 25-100% in water, 3-100% in sediment, and 0-100% in soil, with geometric means (GMs) of 2700 ng/L, 1270 ng/g, and 2440 ng/g, respectively. For 8 traditional SPAs, DFs were 50-100% (GM: 680 ng/L), 3-100% (534 ng/g), and 47-100% (2240 ng/g) in water, sediment, and soil, respectively. AO3114 was the main pollutant in water, while AO1010 dominated in sediment and soil. Notably, low-molecular-weight SPAs showed migration behavior from sediment to water. Four SPAs (AO626, AO1035, AO1098, and AO1076) showed dose- and time-dependent toxicity on Chlorella pyrenoidosa. As time progressed, sediment-released SPAs became more toxic than those in water. Two SPAs (AO1135 and BHT-Q) posed high risks (RQ W  > 1) to green algae, daphnia, and fish. The SPA mixture exhibited high risks (RQ mix  > 1) to these organisms, increasing with the trophic level. The continuous and rapid increase of chemical pollution in surface waters has become a pressing and widely recognized global concern. As emerging contaminants (ECs) in surface waters, pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs), and endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs) have attracted considerable attention due to their wide occurrence and potential threat to human health. Therefore, a comprehensive understanding of the occurrence and risks of ECs in Chinese surface waters is urgently required. This study summarizes and assesses the environmental occurrence concentrations and ecological risks of 42 pharmaceuticals, 15 personal care products (PCPs), and 20 EDCs frequently detected in Chinese surface waters. The ECs were primarily detected in China's densely populated and highly industrialized regions. Most detected PPCPs and EDCs had concentrations between ng/L to µg/L, whereas norfloxacin, caffeine, and erythromycin had relatively high contamination levels, even exceeding 2000 ng/L. Risk evaluation based on the risk quotient method revealed that 34 PPCPs and EDCs in Chinese surface waters did not pose a significant risk, whereas 4-nonylphenol, 4-tert-octylphenol, 17α-ethinyl estradiol, 17β-estradiol, and triclocarban did. Microplastics (MPs) are the pollutants, found widely across various environmental media. However, studies on the MP pollution in urban rivers and the necessary risk assessments remain limited. In this study, the abundance and characteristics of microplastics in a typical urban river were examined to evaluate their distribution, sources, and ecological risks. It was observed that the abundance of MPs in sediments (220-2840 items·kg -1 dry weight (DW)) was much higher than that in surface water (2.9-10.3 items·L -1 ), indicating that the sediment is the "sink" of river MPs. Surface water and sediment were dominated by small particle size MPs (< 0.5 mm). Fiber and debris were common shapes of MPs in rivers and sediments. The microplastics in river water and sediments were primarily white and transparent, respectively. The pollution of deep-sea microplastics has received increasing attention. As a special ecosystem in the deep sea, the cold seep area is of great significance for studying the distribution of microplastics in the deep sea. In this work, the distribution and characteristics of microplastics in seawater, sediments, and shellfish in the Haima cold seep area and the correlation between the characteristics of microplastics in different media and the type of media were studied. Microplastics were found in all three media. The abundance of microplastics in different samples from the Haima cold seep area ranged 1.8-3.8 items/L for the seawater, 11.47-96.8 items/kg (d.w.) for the surface sediments, and 0-5 items/individual (0-0.714 items/g) for the shellfish. The amount of microplastics ingested by shellfish varied among different species. The microplastics in these three media were mainly fibrous, dark-colored, small-sized rayon, polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and polyethylene (PE). In the correlation analysis of microplastic characteristics among the three media, it was found that the characteristics of microplastics in different media in the same area were closely related, and each pair of variables showed a significant positive correlation (P ≤ 0.05). The distinctive geographical conditions would accelerate the interchange of microplastics among various media. Principal component analysis showed that habitat contribute to microplastic feature differences in shellfish. Psychoactive substances (PSs) represent a subset of emerging contaminants. Their widespread production and utilization contribute to a growing ecological burden and risk on a global scale. Conventional wastewater treatment methods have proven insufficient in adequately removing psychoactive substances, leading to their occurrence in surface water ecosystems worldwide. As of present, however, a thorough understanding of their geographical prevalence and distribution patterns remains elusive. Further, in the existing literature, there is a scarcity of comprehensive overviews that systematically summarize the toxicity of various psychoactive substances towards aquatic organisms. Through summarizing almost 140 articles, the present study provides an overview of the sources, pollution status, and biotoxicity of psychoactive substances in surface waters, as well as an assessment of their ecological risks. Concentrations of several psychoactive substances in surface waters were found to be as high as hundreds or even thousands of ng·L -1 . In parallel, accumulation of psychoactive substances in the tissues or organs of aquatic organisms was found to potentially cause certain adverse effects, including behavioral disorders, organ damage, and DNA changes. Oxidative stress was found to be a significant factor in the toxic effects of psychoactive substances on organisms. Many pharmaceutical compounds end up in the environment due to incomplete removal by wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Some compounds are sometimes present in significant concentrations and therefore represent a risk to the aquatic environment. Furosemide is one of the most widely used drugs in the world. Considered as an essential drug by the World Health Organization, this powerful loop diuretic is used extensively to treat hypertension, heart and kidney failure and many other purposes. However, this important consumption also results in a significant release of furosemide in wastewater and in the receiving environment where concentrations of a few hundred ng/L to several thousand have been found in the literature, making furosemide a compound of great concern. Also, during its transport in wastewater systems and WWTPs, furosemide can be degraded by various processes resulting in the production of more than 74 by-products. Furosemide may therefore present a significant risk to ecosystem health due not only to its direct cytotoxic, genotoxic and hepatotoxic effects in animals, but also indirectly through its transformation products, which are poorly characterized. Many articles classify furosemide as a priority pollutant according to its occurrence in the environment, its persistence, its elimination by WWTPs, its toxicity and ecotoxicity. Here, we present a state-of-the-art review of this emerging pollutant of interest, tracking it, from its consumption to its fate in the aquatic environment. Microplastics (MPs) are widespread, minute plastic particles present in various aquatic environments, raising concerns about their effect on human health and ecosystems. The detrimental effects of MPs on the environment, include the contamination of ecosystems, harm to aquatic life through ingestion, potential disruption of food chains, and long-term ecological consequences. Despite numerous studies confirming the MP's presence in aquatic environments, research specifically focused on MPs in bottled drinking water (BDW) is limited. Research on MPs in drinking water is vital to assess potential health risks and develop strategies for ensuring water safety and quality. This study fills a research gap by investigating microplastics (MPs) in nine brands of BDW in the West Godavari region of Andhra Pradesh, India. The average MP concentration in BDW was found to be 2.89 ± 0.48 items/L, with fibers being the predominant shape and sizes ranging from 500 to 1000 μm. Transparent and blue were the most common colors. From ATR-FTIR analysis, the dominant polymer found was polypropylene (PP) followed by polyethylene terephthalate (PET). The human risk assessment was also calculated using the formula of Estimated daily intake (EDI) and Lifetime intake (LTI). The calculation found that the EDI of MPs for children and adults ranged from 0.041 to 0.291 MPs per kilogram per day and 0.019 to 0.133 MPs per kilogram per day, respectively. The mean LTI of MP consumption of an individual, ranged from 17,958 to 2,54,861 MPs, considering an average age of 75 years. Freshwater ecosystems face a particularly high risk of biodiversity loss compared to marine and terrestrial systems. The use of pesticides in agricultural fields is recognized as a relevant stressor for freshwater environments, exerting a negative impact worldwide on the overall status and health of the freshwater communities. In the present work, part of the Horizon 2020 funded SPRINT project, the occurrence of 193 pesticide residues was investigated in 64 small water bodies of distinct typology (creeks, streams, channels, ditches, rivers, lakes, ponds and reservoirs), located in regions with high agricultural activity in 10 European countries and in Argentina. Mixtures of pesticide residues were detected in all water bodies (20, median; 8-40 min-max). Total pesticide levels found ranged between 6.89 and 5860 ng/L, highlighting herbicides as the dominant type of pesticides. Glyphosate was the compound with the highest median concentration followed by 2,4-D and MCPA, and in a lower degree by dimethomorph, fluopicolide, prothioconazole and metolachlor(-S). Argentina was the site with the highest total pesticide concentration in water bodies followed by The Netherlands, Portugal and France. One or more pesticides exceeded the threshold values established in the European Water Framework Directive for surface water in 9 out of 11 case study sites (CSS), and the total pesticide concentration surpassed the reference value of 500 ng/L in 8 CSS. Bisphenol analogues (BPs) have gained increasing attention in recent years due to their ubiquitousness and potential endocrine disrupting properties in environments. However, little information is available on their spatiotemporal distribution, source apportionment and ecological risk in river sediments, especially the case in river basins with a high population density and those typical regions with agricultural-urban gradient, where land use patterns and intensity of human activity are varying. In this study, field investigations of BPs in the sediment of the entire Qinhuai River Basin, a typical agricultural-suburban agricultural-urban gradient area, were conducted before and after the flood period. Thirty-two sites were sampled for six types of BPs, resulted in no significant difference in the concentration of ΣBPs between the two periods, with ΣBPs ranging from 3.92 to 151 ng/g and 2.16-59.0 ng/g, respectively. Bisphenol A (BPA) was the main contributor. Whereas a multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) suggested that the composition structure of BPs had been influenced by water periods. The land use patterns had an impact on the distribution of ΣBPs in river sediments, which was more significant in after the flood period, with ΣBPs in urban rivers was 1.85 times, 3.44 times, and 3.08 times higher than the suburban rivers, agricultural rivers, and reservoirs, respectively. Yet land use types did not significantly alter the composition structure of BPs. The correlation analysis between BPs and the physicochemical properties of sediments showed a significant positive correlation between BPA and total organic carbon (TOC). The positive matrix factorization model (PMF) suggested that BPs in sediments of the basin might be influenced by industrial coatings, textiles, electronics and biopharmaceuticals, as well as urban wastewater or solid waste generated from daily life. The ecological risk assessment posed by BPA, based on the risk quotient, indicated that the ecological risk of BPA in sediments was low for three indicator benthic organisms: crustaceans, worms, and mollusks. Limited knowledge on the structure of emerging organophosphorus compounds (OPCs) hampers our comprehensive understanding of their environmental occurrence and potential risks. Through suspect and nontarget screening, combining data-dependent acquisition, data-independent acquisition, and parallel reaction monitoring modes, we identified 60 OPCs (17 traditional and 43 emerging compounds) in effluents of 14 wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Beijing and Qinghai, China. These OPCs comprise 26 organophosphate triesters, 17 organophosphate diesters, 6 organophosphonates, 7 organothiophosphate esters, and 4 other OPCs. Notably, 14 suspect OPCs were newly identified in WWTP effluents, and 16 nontarget OPCs were newly discovered in environmental matrices. Specifically, the cyclic phosphonate, (5-ethyl-2-methyl-1,3,2-dioxaphosphorinan-5-yl)methyl dimethyl phosphonate P -oxide (PMMMPn), consistently appeared in all WWTP effluents, with semiquantitative concentrations ranging from 44.4 to 282 ng/L. Its analogue, di-PMMMPn, presented in 93% of wastewater samples. Compositional differences between the WWTP effluents of two cities were mainly attributed to emerging OPCs. Hazard and ecological risk assessment underscored the substantial contribution of chlorinated organophosphate esters and organothiophosphate esters to overall risks of OPCs in WWTP effluents. This study provides the most comprehensive OPC profiles in WWTP effluents to date, highlighting the need for further research on their occurrence, fate, and risks, particularly for chlorinated OPCs.

Antioxidants are ubiquitous in various environmental samples, leading to increasing concern regarding their potential risk to environments or humans. However, there is dearth of information regarding the environmental fate of antioxidants and unknown/unexpected antioxidants in the environment. Here, we established a compound database (CDB) containing 320 current-used antioxidants by collecting the chemicals from EPA's functional use database and published documents. Physical-chemical characteristics of these antioxidants were estimated, and 19 ones were considered as persistent and bioaccumulative (P&B) substances. This CDB was further coupled with high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) technique, which was employed for suspect screening of antioxidants in extracts of sediments (n = 88) collected from Taihu Lake basin. We screened 119 HRMS features that can match 135 chemical formulas in the CDB, and 20 out of them exhibited the detection frequencies ≥ 90%. The total concentrations of suspect antioxidants in sediments ranged from 6.41 to 830 ng/g dw. Statistical analysis demonstrated that concentrations of suspect antioxidants in Taihu Lake were statistically significantly lower than those in Shihu and Jiulihu Lake, but greater than those from other small lakes. Collectively, this study provided a CDB that could be helpful for further monitoring studies of antioxidant in the environments, and also provided the first evidence regarding the ubiquity of antioxidants in aquatic environment of Taihu Lake basin., (© 2024. Antibiotics in aquatic systems of developing countries are a growing concern, particularly with the potential ecological risks and emergence of antimicrobial resistance. In Pakistan, antibiotics are widely consumed and released untreated into rivers, however, there is little information on their occurrence and potential risks. In this study, the concentrations and risk assessment of three commonly consumed antibiotics, ciprofloxacin (CIP), amoxicillin (AMX), and cefixime (CFM) belonging to different classes of fluoroquinolone, penicillin, and cephalosporin respectively were investigated in the Kabul River and its two tributaries, Bara River and Shah Alam River in the northwest region of the country. Composite samples were collected in different sampling campaigns and analyzed using the LC-ESI-MS/MS technique. All three antibiotics were found in higher concentrations ranging from 410 to 1810 ng/L, 180-850 ng/L, and 120-600 ng/L for CIP, AMX, and CFM respectively. The Friedman and Wilcoxon signed-ranked tests revealed insignificant differences in average concentrations of each antibiotic in the three rivers and the Pearson Correlation showed a significant positive correlation of CIP with both AMX and CFM indicating their similar pollution sources. Ecotoxicological risk assessment showed a higher risk to algae and bacteria (P. putida) in the rivers with CIP posing a greater risk. The potential risk of antimicrobial resistance development (ARD) was higher in all the three rivers, particularly in Kabul River where maximum risk quotients (RQ ARD ) of 28.3, 9.4 and 3.4 were noted for CIP, CFM and AMX respectively. The human health (HH) risk was insignificant, though the RQ HH was higher for the lower age groups (0-3 months). Synthetic musks (SMs) have gained widespread utilization in daily consumer products, leading to their widespread dissemination in aquatic environments through various pathways. Over the past few decades, the production of SMs has consistently risen, prompting significant concern over their potential adverse impacts on ecosystems and human health. Although several studies have focused on the development of analytical techniques for detecting SMs in biological samples and cosmetic products, a comprehensive evaluation of their global distribution in diverse aquatic media and biological matrices remains lacking. This review aims to provide an up-to-date overview of the occurrence of SMs in both aquatic and various biological matrices, investigating their worldwide distribution trends, assessing their ecological toxicity, and comparing different methodologies for processing and analysis of SMs. The findings underscore the prevalence of polycyclic musks as predominant SMs, with consumption of various products in different countries leading to contrasting distribution of contaminants. Furthermore, the migration of SMs from sediments to the water phase is investigated, indicating the role of solid-phase reservoirs. Incomplete degradation of SMs in the environment could contribute to their accumulation in aquatic systems, impacting the growth and oxidative stress of aquatic organisms, and having a possibility of genotoxicity to them. Human exposure data highlight substantial risks for vulnerable populations such as pregnant women and infants. Moreover, contemporary methods for SMs analysis are presented in this review, particularly focusing on advancements made in the last five years. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are anthropogenic synthetic compounds, with high chemical and thermal stability and a persistent, stable and bioaccumulative nature that renders them a potential hazard for the environment, its organisms, and humans alike. Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) and Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) are the most well-known substances of this category and even though they are phased out from production they are still highly detectable in several environmental matrices. As a result, they have been spread globally in water sources, soil and biota exerting toxic and detrimental effects. Therefore, up and coming technologies, namely advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) and advanced reduction processes (ARPs) are being tested for their implementation in the degradation of these pollutants. Atmosphere is an important component of the microplastics (MPs) cycle. However, studies on atmospheric MPs in peri-urban farmland ecosystems are limited. Herein, the occurrence, influencing factors and geographic sources of atmospheric MPs in peri-urban farmland ecosystems have been analyzed. The average deposition flux of atmospheric MPs was found to be 167.09 ± 92.03 item·m -2 ·d -1 . Around 68 % MPs had particle size <1000 μm, while the main colors of MPs were black (40.71 %) and blue (20.64 %). Approximately 91 % MPs were fibers, while polyethylene terephthalate (49 %) and rayon (36.93 %) were observed as the major microplastic types. The main factors influencing the atmospheric deposition of MPs were gross domestic product (GDP), population density, air pressure, and wind direction. Deposition fluxes exhibited positive correlations with GDP, population density and air pressure, and negative correlations with wind direction. Combined with the backward trajectory model, MPs were mainly found to be originated from the southeast in September and from the northwest in October-February. With the phase-out of legacy per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), PFAS alternatives have been increasingly used in industrial production and daily life. However, available information on the occurrence of PFASs and PFAS alternatives in semi-enclosed bays remains limited. As a representative semi-enclosed bay in Guangdong Province, China, Shuidong Bay has experienced severe anthropogenic pollution (industrial, shipping, cultural, and domestic) in recent decades. Water pollution in Shuidong Bay has worsened, and PFASs have been identified as ubiquitous environmental pollutants in this bay. In this study, 23 PFASs, including 5 emerging PFASs, were analyzed in water, suspended particulate matter (SPM), and sediment samples collected from Shuidong Bay. We determined that perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA) was the predominant PFAS compound in seawater, whereas 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonic acid (FTS) and perfluorooctane sulfonamide acetate (FOSAA) were dominant in SPM and sediment, respectively. The sediment-water partitioning coefficients were greatly dependent on the perfluorinated carbon chain length. Chlorophyll a concentration had a significant effect on the dissolved concentrations of PFASs in seawater. The ecological risk assessment indicated that the PFASs detected in the seawater and sediment samples posed no considerable risks to aquatic organisms. In regions like Southeast Asia, Dhobi Ghats-traditional open-air laundromats-hold cultural significance and provide livelihoods to many people. These centers are near the riverbanks for easy access to water for washing. These Dhobi Ghats are among major sources of microfibers (MFs) in the waterbodies. However, there is no ample data that confirms their level of MF release into the waterbodies. This study reports for the first time the prevalence of microfibers (MFs) in wastewater from Dhobi Ghats in a North Indian city and comparatively assess them with the MF pollution from commercial laundries. A mean microfiber concentration of 3204 ± 270 MFs/L was observed in the discharged effluents of Dhobi Ghats, while a concentration at 36,923 ± 389 MFs/L was observed in effluents from commercial laundries. Pertinently, microfibers measuring less than 75 µm dominated in effluents of commercial laundries, accounting for 53% of the total. Conversely, microfibers within the 75-150-µm range were present in effluents of Dhobi Ghats, constituting 52%. Spectroscopic analyses by FTIR showed polyester and polyamides as the main polymers released from Dhobi Ghats. Ecological risk assessment demonstrated a potential environmental risk from the MF pollution from Dhobi Ghats and commercial laundries. Pharmaceuticals and pesticides are compounds of high concern in surface waters around the world. However, few studies have used passive sampling methods to screen and detect these compounds in natural waters. In this study, a self-developed passive sampler was employed to measure pharmaceuticals and pesticides in the rivers of Nanjing, China. A total of 41 pharmaceuticals and 11 pesticides were detected, among which antibiotic and insecticide were the predominant classes, respectively. Valproic acid, caffeine and triclosan from the pharmaceuticals, and isoprocarb and imidacloprid from the pesticides were found frequently with high concentrations. At most sampling sites, the concentration ratios of caffeine versus carbamazepine exceeded 10, and even above 50, indicating relatively poor efficiency of wastewater treatment, or possibly the direct discharge of raw sewage, or other unknown source of pollution. It was found that the concentrations and ecological risks in the northern area of Yangtze River were higher than those in the southern area of Yangtze River, implying that economic development and population density were not the main contributors to the discovered pollution. The occurrence, seasonal variations and spatial distribution of emerging contaminants (ECs) in wastewater effluents from wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) and UAE's receiving coastal aquatic environment (seawater and sediments) were evaluated in the present study. A total of 21, 23, and 22 contaminants in the effluents, seawater, and sediments, respectively, at concentrations ranging from low ng L -1 up to 1782 ng L -1 in effluents, from low ng/l up to 236.10 ng L -1 in seawater, and from low ng g -1 up to 60.15 ng g -1 in sediments were recorded. The study revealed that imidacloprid, thiabendazole, and acetaminophen were the most ubiquitous compounds in effluents, seawater, and sediments, respectively, since they were found in all samples collected with a detection frequency of 100%. The study also revealed that the higher concentrations of most contaminants were recorded in autumn. However, thiabendazole in effluents and seawater, acetamiprid in effluents, and sulphapyridine in seawater and sediments showed a higher load in winter. Emerging contaminants (ECs) in aquatic environments have attracted attention due to their wide distribution and potential ecotoxicities. Sewage treatment plants (STPs) are proven to be the major source of ECs in the aquatic environment, while there remains insufficient understanding of the removal and risk assessment of ECs in STPs. Here, we clarified the degradation and risk impact of 13 ECs in two aquatic product processing sewage treatment plants (APPSTPs) along the southeast coast of China. The concentrations of ECs followed the order: endocrine-disrupting chemicals (1877.85-15,398.02 ng/L in influent, 3.37-44.47 ng/L in effluent) >  > sulfonamide antibiotics (SAs, 75.14-906.19 ng/L in influent, 1.14-15.33 ng/L in effluent) > pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs, 44.47-589.93 ng/L in influent, 2.54-34.16 ng/L in effluent) ≈ fluoroquinolone antibiotic (54.76-434.83 ng/L in influent, 10.75-32.82 ng/L in effluent) > other antibiotics (16.21-51.96 ng/L in influent, 0.68-6.17 ng/L in effluent). Moreover, the concentrations of PPCPs (decreased by 55.33-87.65% in peak fishing season) and antibiotics (increased by 44.99% in peak fishing season) were affected by fishing activities. In particular, the sequencing batch reactor (SBR) process had a better removal effect than the anaerobic-anoxic-oxic (A 2 /O) process on the treatment of some contaminants (e.g., norfloxacin and nonylphenol). Risk evaluations of ECs demonstrated that nonylphenol and SAs were at high- and low-risk states, respectively. We quantified the occurrences and seasonal variations of the target endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) at four (two major municipals, and two academic institutions) WWTPs in Dehradun city, Uttarakhand, India. The results showed estrone in higher concentrations at μgL -1 levels in influent among the WWTPs, compared to triclosan (TCS) at ngL -1 levels. An astounding concentration of 123.95 μgL -1 was recorded for the estrone in the influent, which is to date the highest ever recorded, globally. Statistical data treatment was performed to test the distribution of the data (Shapiro-Wilk, Anderson-Darling, Lilliefors, and Jarque-Bera tests), and the significant difference between the mean of the wastewater sample population (ANOVA: F statistics, p values, Mann-Whitney test, Tukey's and Dunn's post hoc analysis). Statistical data treatment indicated EDCs concentration with a bi-modal distribution. The Shapiro-Wilk, Anderson-Darling, Lilliefors, and Jarque-Bera tests elucidate a non-normal distribution for the EDCs sample data. A statistically significant difference (F = 8.46; p < 0.0001) in the seasonal data for the abundance of the target EDCs at the WWTPs have been observed. Highest and significantly different mean EDCs concentrations were recorded during the monsoon, compared to the spring (p = 0.025) and summer (p = 0.0004) seasons in the influent waters. The mean influent concentrations of TCS and estrone in monsoon were 66.45 ngL -1 and 78.02 μgL -1 , respectively. Maximum removals were recorded for TCS, while maximum negative removal of ∼293% was observed for estrone in the WWTPs. Particularly, the high levels of estrone in the wastewater pose a significant threat as estrone presence could be led to feminization, dysregulation of reproduction in organisms, and carcinogenesis processes in the environment. The identification of the priority control sequence of pollutants in effluents of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) has important implications for the management of water quality. This study chose 34 typical pollutants based on their representativeness and detection rates in municipal wastewater. The occurrence frequency and concentration of these pollutants in 168 Chinese WWTP effluents were measured at the national level. The data on in vitro toxicity (67 assays) and in vivo toxicity (216 species) for target pollutants were obtained from the public toxicity database and our experimental data. An environmental health prioritization index (EHPi) method was proposed to integrate the occurrence frequency, concentration, removal rate, and in vitro and in vivo toxicity to determine the priority control sequence of target pollutants. Ethynyl estradiol, 17β-estradiol, estrone, diclofenac, and atrazine were the top 5 pollutants identified by the EHPi score. Several pollutants with high EHPi scores showed spatial differences. Besides the EHPi method which was from the single pollutant perspective, the combined toxicity of pollutants (300 pairs of binary combinations) was also measured based on in vitro toxicity assays to evaluate the key pollutants from the pollutant-pollutant interacting perspective. The pollutants (such as ofloxacin and acetaminophen) that could have significant synergetic effects with many other pollutants are worthy of prior attention. Sludge is one of the most problematic residues generated during wastewater treatment. Herein, we validate a single-step, sensitive procedure for the determination of a selection of 46 basic micro-pollutants, either used as pharmaceuticals or pesticides, in sludge from municipal sewage treatment plants (STPs), using liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry as determination technique. The proposed method permitted to achieve accurate recoveries (values from 70% to 120%, for samples spiked at different concentration levels) using solvent-based calibration standards. This feature, combined with limits of quantification lower than 5 ng g -1 (dry weight), allowed the rapid and sensitive quantification of target compounds in freeze-dried sludge samples. Out of 46 investigated pollutants, 33 species showed detection frequencies above 85% in a group of 48 sludge samples, obtained from 45 STPs located in the Northwest of Spain. In recent years, there has been an exponential increase in the research popularity of microplastics (MPs) in offshore marine environments. However, there is still a gap in the research on the accumulation of MPs in different tissues of aquatic organisms and the trophic transfer of MPs between aquatic organisms. The common occurrence of MPs in the gills and guts of 11 species of commercial fishes was examined in the coastal waters of the Lvsi fishing ground (LSFG). The obtained results showed that >85 % of MPs existed in the gills and guts of these fish, and the abundance was 2.39 ± 1.38 pieces/fish and 2.56 ± 1.42 pieces/fish, respectively. Fibrous and blue are the most common colors and shapes of MPs, and PET is the main polymer type. At the species level, the abundance of MPs in the gills and guts of a few fishes (e.g., Larimichthys polyactis, Setipinna tenuifilis, Collichthys lucidus) decreased with increasing body length and body weight (P < 0.05). At the community level, this situation was not significant (P > 0.05). With increasing trophic level (TL), MPs tended to decrease in the gills (trophic magnification factor, TMF = 0.86) but did not significantly vary in the gut. We believe that MPs are multidimensional pollutants, and their accumulation in tissues/organs of organisms has not been accurately and qualitatively determined. To establish the relationship of MP transport and trophic transfer among water, sediments and organisms, we suggest that more efforts should be made to investigate MPs in aquatic organisms in the coastal waters of LSFG and to increase the examination of MPs in the water column and sediments. The global survey for the presence of microplastics (MPs) in aquatic environments has attracted widespread scientific attention over the past decade. This study demonstrates a multidimensional analytical approach, including isotopic and thermogravimetric analyses to evaluate characteristics and behavior of MPs in the environment. The MP samples were collected in two contrasting coastal areas of Japan. The stable carbon isotope (δ 13 C) ratios of field-collected polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polystyrene (PS) MPs ranged from -25.6‰ to -31.4‰, -23.4‰ to -30.9‰, and -27.3‰ to -28.6‰, respectively. The detected isotope signatures were similar to those of commercial products. In addition, the differences in δ 13 C signature were determined between MPs with different colors. Through thermal analysis, the single-step endothermic process was observed for environmental PE and PS-MPs. Patterns in the thermograms revealed dissimilarities in degradability among the PE-MPs with different colors. The results reveal that degradation (aging) may play a significant role in the behavior and characteristics of MP debris in the aquatic environment. The consumption of cytostatics, pharmaceuticals prescribed in chemotherapy, is increasing every year and worldwide, along with the incidence of cancer. The presence and the temporal evolution of cytostatics in wastewaters from a Portuguese hospital center was evaluated through a 9-month sampling campaign, comprising a total of one hundred and twenty-nine samples, collected from May 2019 to February 2020. Eleven cytostatics out of thirteen pharmaceuticals were studied, including flutamide, mycophenolate mofetil and mycophenolic acid, which have never been monitored before. Target analytes were extracted and quantified by solid-phase extraction coupled to liquid-chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry analysis; the method was fully validated. All pharmaceuticals were detected in at least one sample, bicalutamide being the one found with higher frequency (detected in all samples), followed by mycophenolic acid, which was also the compound detected at higher concentrations (up to 5340 ± 211 ng/L). Etoposide, classified as carcinogenic to humans, was detected in 60% of the samples at concentrations up to 142 ± 15 ng/L. The risk from exposure to cytostatics was estimated for aquatic organisms living in receiving bodies. Cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, etoposide, flutamide, megestrol and mycophenolic acid are suspected to induce risk. Conazole fungicides (CFs), the common-used pesticide in agriculture distributed widely in the environment. This research analyzed the occurrence, potential sources, and risks of eight CFs in the East China Sea surface seawater in the early summer of 2020. The total CF concentration ranged from 0.30 to 6.20 ng/L, with an average value of 1.64 ± 1.24 ng/L. Fenbuconazole, hexaconazole, and triadimenol were the major CFs that comprised >96 % of the total concentration. The Yangtze River was identified as the significant source of CFs from the coastal regions to the off-shore inputs. Ocean current was the first-order factor controlling the content and distribution of CFs in the East China Sea. Although risk assessment revealed CFs posed a low or no substantial risk to ecology and human health, long-term monitoring was also encouraged. Antibiotics are largely applied in aquaculture to increase production and control diseases, while how the antibiotics used in pond farming influence the distribution of antibiotics in receiving water seasonally is still not well understood. In this study, the variations of 15 frequently used antibiotics in Honghu Lake and surrounding ponds were investigated seasonally to figure out the impact of pond farming on antibiotics distributions in Honghu Lake. Results showed that the antibiotic concentrations in fish ponds ranged from 11.76 to 389.8 ng/L, while in crab and crayfish ponds were lower than 30.49 ng/L. The predominant antibiotic in fish ponds was florfenicol, followed by sulfonamides and quinolones, with generally low concentrations. Sulfonamides and florfenicol were the main antibiotics in Honghu Lake, affected by the surrounding aquaculture water partially. The antibiotics residue in aquaculture ponds showed obvious seasonal characteristics, with the lowest in spring. From summer, the concentrations of antibiotics in aquaculture ponds gradually increased and reached a peak in autumn, and the seasonal variation of antibiotics in the receiving lake was also related to the antibiotics in the aquaculture ponds. Risk assessment analysis showed that antibiotics such as enrofloxacin and florfenicol in fish ponds posed a medium and low risk to algae, and Honghu Lake acted as a natural reservoir of antibiotics and poses increased risks to algae. In general, our study demonstrated that aquaculture represented by pond farming brought significant risks of antibiotic pollution to natural water bodies. Therefore, reasonable control of the fish antibiotics usage in autumn and winter, as well as the rational use of antibiotics in aquaculture and the use of antibiotics before pond cleaning, is required to reduce the migration of antibiotics from aquaculture surface water to the receiving lake., (© 2023. Microplastics have been identified in all living forms including human beings, the present need is to restrain its spread and devise measures to remediate microplastics from polluted ecosystems. In this regard, the present review emphasizes on the occurrence, sources detection and toxic effects of microplastics in various ecosystems. The removal of microplastics is prevalent by various physico-chemical and biological methods, although the removal efficiency by biological methods is low. It has been noted that the degradation of plastics by insect gut larvae is a well-known aspect, however, the underlying mechanism has not been completely identified. Studies conducted have shown the magnificent contribution of gut microbiota, which have been isolated and exploited for microplastic remediation. Microplastics come in a variety of shapes, polymer types and sizes. Due to the lack of a harmonised approach to analyse and quantify microplastics, there are huge disparities in size detection limits and size classifications used in the literature. This has caused large variations in reported microplastic data and has made comparing microplastic abundance between studies extremely challenging. Herein, we applied a simple mathematical approach that allows for a meaningful comparison between size and abundance (number of particles) of microplastics irrespective of the size classifications used. This method was validated using two separate datasets (microplastics in air and sediment) and applied to re-analyse 127 publications reporting microplastics in various environmental matrices. We demonstrate a strong negative linear relationship between microplastic concentrations and their sizes with comparable slopes across all matrices. Using this method, it is possible to compare the concentration of microplastics of various sizes between studies. It also allows estimation of the abundance of microplastics of a specific size where data are not available. Nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (NPAHs) are widespread organic pollutants that possess carcinogenic and mutagenic properties, so they may pose a risk to the environment and human health. In this study, the concentrations of 15 NPAHs and 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in 30 surface water samples and 26 sediment samples were measured in 2018 from the Taige Canal, one of the main rivers flowing into Taihu Lake, China. The total NPAH concentrations in water and sediment ranged from 14.7 to 235 ng/L and 22.9 to 96.5 ng/g dw, respectively. 9-nitrophenanthrene (nd-76.3 ng/L) was the dominant compound in surface water, while 2+3-nitrofluoranthene (1.73-18.1 ng/g dw) dominated in sediment. Among PAHs, concentration ranging from 1,097 to 2,981 ng/L and 1,089 to 4,489 ng/g dw in surface water and sediment, respectively. There was a strong positive correlation between the log octanol-water partition coefficient (K ow ) and log sediment-water partition coefficient due to hydrophobic interaction. The fugacity fraction value increased with the decrease of log K ow , and chrysene was transferred from water into sediment. The residual NPAHs in surface water and sediment of the Taige Canal have partial correlation. Diesel engine and coal combustion emissions were probably the principal sources of NPAHs in surface water and sediment. The results of ecological risk assessment showed that some NPAHs in water (e.g, 1-nitropyrene and 6-nitrochrysene) and sediment (e.g., 2-nitrobiphenyl, 5-nitroacenaphthene, 9-nitrophenanthrene and 2+3-nitrofluoranthene) had moderate ecological risks, which should be of concern., (Copyright © 2022. Municipal solid wastes (MSWs) contain diverse per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), and these substances may leach into leachates, resulting in potential threats to the environment and human health. In this study, leachates from incineration plants with on-site treatment systems were measured for 17 PFAS species, including 13 perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs) and 4 perfluorosulfonic acids (PFSAs). PFAS were detected in all of the raw leachates and finished effluents in concentrations ranging from 7228 to 16,565 ng L -1 and 43 to 184 ng L -1 , respectively, with a greater contribution from the short-chain PFAS and PFCAs. The results showed that the existing combined processes (biological treatment and membrane filtration) were effective in decreasing PFAS in the aqueous phase with removal efficiencies over 95%. In addition, correlation analysis suggested that physical entrapment, not biodegradation, was the main means of PFAS reduction in the treatment system. Various studies have been conducted on the perfluorochemicals (PFCs) family over the years. These compounds have been sought in various industrial aspects involving the synthesis of everyday utilities due to their broad range of applications. As a result, PFCs have built up in the environment, causing concern. The presence of PFCs in various environmental media, such as terrestrial and marine settings, as well as the mechanisms of transport, bioaccumulation, and physio-chemical interactions of PFCs within plants, aquatic organisms, microplastics, and, ultimately, the human body, are discussed in this review, which draws on a variety of research publications. The interaction of PFCs with proteins, translocation, and adsorption by hydrophobic interactions were observed, and this had an impact on the natural functioning of biological processes, resulting in events such as phylogenic clustering, competitive inhibition, and many others, posing potential hazards to human health and other relevant organisms in the ecosystem. However, further research is needed to have a better knowledge of PFCs and their interactions so that low-cost treatments can be developed to eliminate them. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have been mass-produced and widely applied in consumer and industrial products, resulting in their widespread presence in the environment. Features such as environmental persistence, bioaccumulation, and high toxicity even at low doses have made PFASs an increasing concern. This brief review focuses on soil PFASs, especially the effect of soil PFASs on other environmental media and their potential threats to human health through daily diet. Specifically, soil PFASs contamination caused by different pathways was first investigated. Soil pollution from application of aqueous film-forming foams (AFFFs) is generally more severe than that from fluorochemical manufacturing plants, followed by biosolid land use, landfill, and irrigation. Factors, such as carbon chain length of PFASs, wastewater treatment technology, geographical conditions, and regional development level, are related to soil PFASs' pollution. Then, the migration, bioaccumulation, and toxicity characteristics of soil PFASs were analyzed. Short-chain PFASs have higher solubility, mobility, and bioavailability, while long-chain PFASs have higher bioaccumulation potential and are more toxic to organisms. Factors such as soil texture, solution chemistry conditions, enzymes, and fertilization conditions also influence the environmental behavior of PFASs. The risk of human exposure to PFASs through agricultural and animal products is difficult to control and varies depending on living region, age, eating habits, lifestyle, ethnicity, etc. Soil PFASs threaten drinking water safety, affect soil function, and enter food webs, threatening human health. Knowledge gaps and perspectives in these research fields are also included in current work to assist future research to effectively investigate and understand the environmental risks of soil PFASs, thereby reducing human exposure.

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) discharge metric tons of microplastics (MPs) daily to aquatic and terrestrial environments worldwide. Herein we provide a holistic review on MPs in the WWTPs, highlighting recent advances in sampling and analysis, improved understanding of their sources, occurrence, and degradation in treatment steps, and the potential risks MPs pose after being discharged in treated effluent and sludge. We discuss the merits and limitations of the various sampling and analytical approaches to determine MPs in major WWTP compartments; highlight new research on MP profiles (abundance, physical characteristics, and compositions) in raw sewage, treated effluent, and waste sludge, which are of particular interest when assessing MP sources, removal rates, and fate; and emphasize mechanisms of MP fragmentation and degradation within WWTPs as well as the potential sorption of wastewater contaminants to the MPs. We find that robust and standardized methods for determining MPs in WWTP samples is still urgently needed, and that complete removal of MPs from wastewater by WWTPs is not guaranteed, although the vast majority of MPs end up in sludge. Disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in swimming pool water are of wide concern for public health. In this study, the occurrence of five categories of aliphatic halogenated DBPs, i.e., trihalomethanes (THMs), haloacetic acids (HAAs), haloacetonitriles (HANs), halonitromethanes (HNMs), and haloketones (HKs), and six categories of aromatic halogenated DBPs, i.e., halophenols (HPs), halonitrophenols (HNPs), halohydroxy-benzaldehydes (HBALs), halohydroxybenzoic acids (HBAs), halobenzoquinones (HBQs), and haloanilines (HAs), was examined in seven indoor swimming pool water and their incoming tap water. The correlations between the DBP concentrations and water quality parameters were explored. Moreover, the cytotoxicity of the aliphatic and aromatic halogenated DBPs was tested with human hepatoma (HepG2) cells, and the concentration-cytotoxicity contributions of different DBP categories were calculated. The results demonstrate that 24 aliphatic (5 THMs, 8 HAAs, 5 HANs, 4 HNMs, and 2 HKs) and 50 aromatic halogenated DBPs (9 HPs, 8 HNPs, 9 HBALs, 8 HBAs, 11 HBQs, and 5 HAs) were present in the swimming pool water, among which 41 aromatic halogenated DBPs were detected in swimming pool water for the first time. The average concentrations of the five categories of aliphatic halogenated DBPs in the swimming pool water were in the order of HAAs > HANs > HKs > THMs > HNMs, while those in their incoming tap water were in the order of THMs > HAAs > HKs > HANs > HNMs. The average concentrations of the aromatic halogenated DBPs in the swimming pool water were significantly lower than those of the aliphatic halogenated DBPs, following the order of HBQs > HPs > HBAs > HBALs > HAs > HNPs, while those in their incoming tap water were in the order of HBALs > HBQs > HPs > HBAs > HAs > HNPs. The average concentration-cytotoxicity contributions of different DBP categories in the swimming pool water followed the order of HAAs > HANs > HNMs > HKs > HBQs > THMs > HPs > HNPs > HBAs > HBALs > HAs, with HAAs, HANs, and HNMs possessing the main concentration-cytotoxicity contributions (93.2% in total) among all DBP categories.

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) have attracted widespread attention owing to their extensive use and potential adverse effects on human and ecosystem health. There is a lack of information regarding the occurrence and environmental fate of PPCPs in large agricultural irrigation areas in China. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive survey on 30 PPCPs in water from Hetao Irrigation District, one of the three largest irrigation areas in China. The ΣPPCP-concentrations ranged 82.13-1409.24 ng/L in August and 40.53-887.20 ng/L in November, with caffeine (CAF), norfloxacin (NOR), erythromycin (ERY), sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and ofloxacin (OFL) being the predominant compositions. Spatially, the average ΣPPCP concentrations increased from irrigation to drainage water, and then decreased in Wuliangsuhai Lake. Less PPCP mass loading (55.05 kg/y) migrated from Wuliangsuhai Lake to Yellow River than that from the Yellow River to Hetao Irrigation District (425.88 kg/y), indicating that Wuliangsuhai Lake plays an important role in improving water quality. This review describes the occurrence and distribution of microplastics in freshwater and marine environments in recent years (2017-2022). Use of microplastics often results in contamination of aquatic environments, threatens biodiversity, and creates the need for environmental remediation. Such remediation strategies can involve primary, secondary, and tertiary treatments. Tertiary treatment is a frequent research subject due to its high efficiency and the possibility for advancements and enhancements. This study discusses tertiary treatments with remediation efficiencies of 95% and greater and their advantages, disadvantages, and future perspectives. Biochar-mediated remediation of microplastics is an effective method that may be able to achieve efficiencies approaching 100%. The study concludes by exploring methods of removing microplastics, including constructed wetlands and biochar, which offer high efficiency. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Tertiary treatments are an effective microplastic remediation strategy applicable succeeding secondary or primary treatments or as an individual remediation strategy. Biochar is a highly efficient adsorbent for microplastic remediation from aquatic environment with eco-friendly aspect and reusability. Antioxidants are prevalently used during rubber production to improve rubber performance, delay aging, and extend service life. However, recent studies have revealed that their transformation products (TPs) could adversely affect environmental organisms and even lead to environmental events, which led to great public concern about environmental occurrence and potential impacts of rubber antioxidants and their TPs. In this review, we first summarize the category and application of rubber antioxidants in the world, and then demonstrate the formation mechanism of their TPs in the environment, emphasizing their influence on the ozone oxidative degradation. The potential toxic effects of antioxidants and their TPs are further reviewed to improve understanding of their biological health impact and environmental risks. Finally, the environmental occurrences of antioxidants and their TPs are summarized and their environmental impacts are demonstrated based on the recent studies. Due to the currently limited understanding on the toxic and biological effects of these compounds, further studies are required in order to better assess various TPs of these antioxidants and their environmental impact. To our knowledge, this is the first review on antioxidants and their TPs in the environment, which may elevate the environmental risk awareness of rubber products and their TPs in the near future.

1,4-dioxane is a heterocyclic ether used as a polar industrial solvent and are released as waste discharges. 1,4-dioxane deteriorates health and quality, thereby attracts concern by the environment technologists. The need of attaining sustainable development goals have resulted in search of an eco-friendly and technically viable treatment strategy. This extensive review is aimed to emphasis on the (a) characteristics of 1,4-dioxane and their occurrence in the environment as well as their toxicity, (b) remedial strategies, such as physico-chemical treatment and advanced oxidation techniques. Special reference to bioremediation that involves diverse microbial strains and their mechanism are highlighted in this review. The role of macronutrients, stimulants and other abiotic cofactors in the biodegradation of 1,4-dioxane is discussed lucidly. We have critically discussed the inducible enzymes, enzyme-based remediation, distinct instrumental method of analyses to know the fate of intermediates produced from 1,4-dioxane biotransformation. This comprehensive survey also tries to put forth the different toxicity assessment tools used in evaluating the extent of detoxification of 1,4-dioxane achieved through biotransforming mechanism.
