Groundwater is present in its purest form beneath the earth's surface. However, metal contamination is potentially a problem faced by many countries. For this reason, the present study aims to make an assessment of the risks associated with groundwater consumption around the Marituba landfill in an Amazon region. The present study was characterized as transversal with the use of primary data. The sampling occurred in a stratified random way, performed in two radii of action being the 1st radius of 2.5 km away from the landfill and the 2nd radius of 3.5 km away from the landfill to the neighborhoods. A total of 184 points were collected. In all communities the average daily dose (ADD) was higher than the reference oral dose (Rfd), for the metals As, Pb and Mn the risk quotient (HQ) was greater than 1 (one) in all neighborhoods, the concentration of Mn in the least exposed neighborhood was greater than 10 µg.L -1 , even at a distance of 3.5 km from the landfill. The average concentrations for As and Pb did not exceed the recommended, however, they were more significant for the Beira Rio neighborhood, respectively 1.47 µg.L -1 and 1.9 µg.L -1 . And the average concentration for Cu was more significant for the Uriboca neighborhood 18.20 µg.L -1 , but within the recommended. The average of the general concentration of Heavy Metals Pollution Index (HPI) of the water consumed was 80.03, indicating that the water consumed by the population is contaminated by metals.

The present study evaluated As, Hg, Pb and Cd burdens in both ecologically and commercially important 314 marine fishes belonging to 47 species sampled along the Amazon Coast. We specifically investigated variations in these four elements among different habitats and their relationships with trophic position and estimated potential human health risk by calculating the hazard quotient (HQ), hazard index (HI), and target cancer risk (TR). Our analyses revealed that Hg concentrations in reef-associated fish were over 2-fold those recorded in demersal fish (p < 0.001). A stable isotope analysis indicated that most of the fish species analyzed herein are secondary consumers (i.e., TP > 2.9) and their trophic positions exhibited a significant negative correlation to As, Pb and Cd. Positive significant relationships were noted between As-Cd, As-Pb, As-Hg, Hg-Cd and Cd-Pb, suggesting that these elements exhibit similar dispersion properties and bioaccumulation homology, probably arising from natural fluvial inputs from the Amazon basin system. Detected As concentrations were higher than established guidelines and legal limits in 63.8% of the examined species (n = 30), whereas Cd, Hg and Pb levels were generally very low. Estimated daily intake (EDI) of iAs, Hg and Pb were above reference dose (RfD) in more almost half of species analyzed and HQ values were each found to pose potential non-carcinogenic health risks if high amounts are consumed over time. HI indicates that the determined elements attained levels considered as potential human health hazards trough consumption of eight cartilaginous fish. The TR values of iAs and Pb were higher than the guideline value and given this, individuals who continuously consume cartilaginous fish contaminated with the toxic elements determined here will likely be under increased cancer risks in the long term., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Ltd. In the last decades, mega-diverse rivers worldwide (e.g., the Amazon and their tributaries) have experienced several human-driven transformations, although impact assessments oftentimes lack baseline data or reference values to better estimate observed disturbances. Herein, we assessed THg and δ 15 N in fish muscle tissue to determine biomagnification processes, also including seasonal assessments, concerning Hg in fish from the Belo Monte reservoir, located on the Xingu River, prior to its impoundment. A total of 312 samples from 19 fish species belonging to distinct feeding guilds were sampled. None presented THg concentrations above the threshold levels of 0.5 μg g -1 established by the World Health Organization. However, biomagnification was observed (R = 0.8; p < 0.001), also confirmed by a trophic magnification factor of 1.76 for the entire food web. The THg content in the water was less than 0.001 mg L -1 and only Hemiodus unimaculatus presented seasonal variations for THg. Therefore, at the time of this study, the Xingu River presented low Hg contamination levels in both water and target fish., (© 2021. Here, we evaluated the levels of As, Hg, Pb, and Cd in shark meat sold along the Amazon Coast of Brazil and used nitrogen stable isotope values to determine trophic position and to assess element biomagnification. From market samples, a total of 13 species were identified via molecular analysis, including those listed as endangered and vulnerable by the IUCN Red List. Arsenic was present in significantly higher concentrations than all other elements, followed by Hg, with the highest mean concentrations recorded in M. higmani (As: 19.46 ± 8.79 μg/g ww) and C. acronotus (Hg: 1.12 ± 0.68 μg/g ww). Lead and Cd were recorded at much lower levels in all species. The EWI of individual elements were above PTWI for all species when considering Hg, seven species for inorganic arsenic (iAs), and one species for Pb. The weekly consumption of 10 species should be reduced to less than 416.39 g, which is equivalent to the daily estimated fish consumption rate in the region. The mean (±SD) δ 15 N values of species ranged from 10.7 ± 0.51‰ in M. higmani to 14.2 ± 0.59‰ in C. porosus, indicating feeding over >1 trophic level. Arsenic was negatively correlated with δ 15 N values, while Hg was positively correlated indicating biodilution and biomagnification, respectively. This study assessed if the concentrations of methylmercury (MeHg) in predatory and non-predatory fish caught in the Upper Solimões River are safe for human consumption, according to the reference values established by the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA). MeHg concentrations were evaluated in muscle of 5 predatory and 4 non-predatory fish species by gas chromatography with electron capture detector (GC-ECD). MeHg concentrations in predatory (0.09 mg kg -1 ) and non-predatory (0.04 mg kg -1 ) fish were under the safe upper limit for human consumption. The general average concentration of MeHg in these fish were 0.05 mg kg -1 . The Estimated Weekly Intake of MeHg was higher than the provisional tolerable weekly intake in both predatory and non-predatory fish, especially for women. Due to the high rates of fish consumption in the Amazon, the risk assessment based only on the concentration of MeHg in fish may not be accurate.

Open-air landfill's may be are considered as a potential source of human environmental exposure to chemical substances such as, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and toxic metals. Due to possible availability of mercury in the environment caused by open landfill emissions, this study evaluates the spatiality and seasonality of macroinvertebrates, in particular shrimps (Macrobrachium amazonicum), exposure to mercury (Hg). Information regarding Hg accumulation in this crustacean may be important for the development of public policies aiming conservation and preservation of ecosystems surrounding landfills in Amazon, and around the world. Sampling occurred quarterly in the following months: November/2015; February/2016; May/2016 and; August/2016. In each of these months, three points were selected: P1, P2 and P3. The samples were processed via acid digestion and the quantification of metal was performed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The average concentration of total mercury (T-Hg) was 24.565 ± 6.610 µg kg -1 wet weight, with minimum and maximum limits of 12.742 ± 11.367 (P3) and 35.509 ± 14.761 µg kg -1 wet weight (P1) in November/2015 and August/2016, respectively. The concentration of total mercury (T-Hg) in shrimps was different between points (p = 0.004) and months (p = 0.000). The T-Hg concentrations were significantly higher in May and August 2016, which corresponds to the dry season. The presence of landfills promotes large accumulation of T-Hg in the aquatic biota and represents a risk to human health. However, seasonal changes in T-Hg levels were observed. In the wettest period, bioconcentration factor levels decrease in aquatic organisms.

In order to assess the risk of exposure of human populations to dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and mercury, muscles of five fish species were analysed, along with the surface sediment of 14 Iriri River sampling sites. The fish specimens were sacrificed by the spinal section, prior to sex identification, body weight determination and total length. Considering the fish specimens studied, 11% of them showed concentrations of mercury higher than the maximum established by the World Health Organization for safe human consumption. A positive correlation between fish body weight and mercury concentration was observed, besides a positive correlation between the fish size and Hg concentration. Significant differences ( P  < 0.05) were found between mean concentrations of DDT and metabolites among species of fish studied. In the Plagioscion squamossissimus species, the highest concentration of total DDT (151.4 ng/g) was found, while in Eugerres Brasilianus species, the lowest. However, the DDT levels in fish muscle of studied species are below the maximum set by FAO-Alimentarius CODEX. In the sediments, total DDT ranged from 11.58 ng/g to 48.4 ng/g, which is associated with the historical DDT use in the Amazon. According to sediment quality guidelines, these levels have a moderate toxic effect in almost all of the studied region.

Many studies on mercury contamination in aquatic biota deal with the effect of consuming metal-contaminated organisms on human health. In this study, we examined the factors that cause mercury contamination in Podocnemis unifilis in the Xingu River Basin of Mato Grosso and Par&aacute; States, Brazil. We quantified by atomic absorption spectroscopy with cold vapor the total mercury (THg) content in the liver and muscle samples of 50 Podocnemis unifilis specimens collected from the basin. The liver and muscle samples contained 134.20 ± 119.30 ng g &minus;1 THg and 24.86 ± 26.36 ng g &minus;1 THg, respectively. Each chelonian or meal has, on average, 5.34&times; more Hg than the highest level established as acceptable. From the results it can be inferred that, given the weekly consumption of chelonians, the riverine and indigenous communities in the Xingu River Basin are at risk of chronic consumption of Hg in amounts beyond the acceptable limit. The potential high risk to the health of this population is evident; however, the risk classification needs to be further studied.

The Furo of Laura is an economically important river in the Amazon estuary. Thus, in the present study, we evaluated the metal distribution (Al, Cd, Co, Cu, Cr, Fe, Ni, and Mg) in the bottom sediments of this river. The sediments were sampled at four points every 2months for a year with an Ekman-Birge sampler. After microwave acid digestion, the metal levels were determined by optical emission spectrometry with inductively coupled plasma. The particle size and organic matter content influenced the concentration of the metals. The sediments were not enriched by the analyzed metals; the estuary therefore retained the characteristics of an uncontaminated environment, thus serving as a reference environment for comparison., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Ltd. This study assessed total mercury (THg) and methyl mercury (MeHg) concentrations, bioaccumulation and biomagnification of THg through the food web in fishes consumed by indigenous communities of Bacajá River, the largest tributary of the right bank of Xingu River. In total, 496 fish (22 species) were sampled. Nine species had THg concentrations above the limit recommended by the World Health Organisation (0·5 µg g(-1) wet mass), and one exceeded the recommended level for Hg in predatory fishes by Brazilian law (1·0 µg g(-1) ). The average concentration of THg increased significantly with trophic guild (herbivorous to piscivorous) and trophic level, with higher accumulation in fishes with greater total length. Ninety-six per cent of all mercury was methylated. These results suggest that feeding habits determine THg concentrations in fishes and that Hg elimination rate is slow during growth, which allows greater accumulation. Studies using chelonians as biosentinels of environment quality or health risks associated with turtle consumption are very rare, especially in the Amazon basin. This study aims to measure Mercury levels (Hg) in muscle, liver, fat and blood of Podocnemis unifilis from the lower Xingu River, assessing the possible difference in concentration between sexes and also evaluating the potential bioaccumulation along different body sizes. Samples were collected during the dry season (October 2012) and Mercury (Hg) concentrations were analysed by Cold Vapor Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (CVAAS). A total of 29 specimens of P. unifilis of different sizes showed low levels lower than 0.2 mg/Kg). Higher Hg concentrations were found in the liver, and significant correlations between Hg concentrations in the different tissues were also detected. There was no difference between males and females and a negative correlation was found between Hg concentration and body size.
