This study investigated the removal of Reactive Blue 21 (RB 21) dye from aqueous solutions by adsorption, evaluating the waste fly ash (FA). The effects of the parameters, such as initial dye concentration (100-750 mg/L), initial pH (2.0-8.0), adsorbent dose (1.0-4.0 g/L), and temperature (298-323 K) on the adsorption process were investigated. The optimum initial pH value was 2.0 for the highest RB21 dye removal (75.2 mg/g). At optimized conditions (pH 2.0, an adsorbent dosage of 1.0 g/L, a dye concentration of 750 mg/L, and an equilibrium time of 72 h), the highest adsorption capacity was found to be 105.2 mg/g. Moreover, the results of the kinetic studies fitted the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Equilibrium data were best represented by the Langmuir isotherm model, with a maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of 103.41 mg/g at 323 K. ΔG ads 0 values were negative and varied from 11.64 to 9.50 kJ/mol in the temperature range of 298-323 K, the values of enthalpy (ΔH ads o ) and entropy (ΔS ads o ) of thermodynamics parameters were calculated as 37.62 kJ/mol and 86.67 J/mol K, respectively, indicating that this process was endothermic. Furthermore, the adsorbent costs for powdered activated carbon (PAC) and FA to remove 1 kg of RB 21 dye from aqueous solutions are calculated as 2.52 U.S. $ and 0.34 U.S. $, respectively. It is seen that the cost of FA is approximately 7.4 times lower than PAC. Treatment of landfill leachate is still a current problem due to the high treatment costs in addition to the difficulty of meeting the discharge criteria. However, there is a more important issue that should be underlined; it is also valuable compounds that leachate contains. Conventional methods used for treatment of leachate such as membrane filtration, advanced oxidation processes, biological processes and their combinations have largely focused on treatment. However, the recovery of ammonia and volatile organic acids (VFA) in leachate is a promising approach both to overcome high treatment costs and to sustainably manage leachate. In this study, leachate treatment potential was investigated by mechanical vapor recompression (MVR) process, which offers an operational opportunity to recover high value-added products from leachate while providing an effective treatment for wastewater. Optimum operating conditions for the pilot-scale MVR process have been determined by laboratory-scale studies. VFAs were recovered as organic acid salts from the pilot-scale MVR distillate, while ammonia recovery was accomplished as ammonium sulfate from a highly contaminated concentrate stream. VFA and ammonia recovery rates were 89% and 99%, respectively. The treatment cost of leachate with MVR process was calculated according to the data obtained in pilot scale MVR studies considering the operating cost, chemical cost and economical contribution of value-added products. The results showed that the integrated MVR-crystallization process, all treatment costs are covered, with a net gain of 3.8 USD/m 3 . In Electro-Fenton (EF) processes, the use of iron as a catalyst under acidic conditions results in increased costs and potential secondary pollution. To address these issues, we developed a CuFeV layered double hydroxide (LDH) coating on graphite felt (GF) (CuFeV LDH@GF) that offers an effective performance across a broad pH range without causing metal pollution. The CuFeV LDH@GF cathode exhibited a good oxygen reduction performance, high stability, and an efficient removal of levofloxacin (LEV) over a wide pH range (pH = 3-10). The simultaneous presence of Cu 2+ /Cu 3+ , Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ , and V 4+ /V 5+ redox pairs played a crucial role in facilitating interfacial electron transfer, thereby enhancing the production and subsequent activation of H 2 O 2 within the system. The apparent rate constant (k app ) of LEV removal under neutral conditions with the CuFeV LDH@GF electrode was more than twice that of the raw GF electrode. This improvement can be attributed to the CuFeV LDH coating, which increased the generation of hydroxyl radicals ( • OH) from 0.64 to 1.27 mM. Importantly, the CuFeV LDH@GF electrode maintained its efficiency and stability even after 10 reuse cycles. Additionally, GC-MS analyses revealed the degradation of intermediate compounds, which included cyclic and aliphatic compounds. In this study, color removal, suspended solids removal, and salt recovery were investigated from different fabric dyeing wastewaters using a pilot scale treatment system. A pilot scale system was installed in the wastewater outlet area of five different textile companies. Experiments were planned for pollutant removal and salt recovery from wastewater. First, the wastewater was treated by electrooxidation (EO) using graphite electrodes. After a reaction time of 1 h, the wastewater was passed throughout the granular activated carbon (AC) coloumn. The pre-treated wastewater was passed through the membrane (NF) system to recover the salt in the wastewater. Finally, the recovered salt water was used for fabric dyeing. In the pilot scale treatment system (EO + AC + NF), 100% of suspended solids (SS) and an average of 99.37% of color were removed from fabric dyeing wastewaters. At the same time, a high amount of salt water was recovered and reused. Optimum conditions were determined as 4 V current, 1000 A power, wastewater's own pH values and 60 min of reaction time. The energy and operating cost for treatment of 1 m 3 of wastewater were determined as 40.0 kWh/m 3 and 2.2 US$/m 3 , respectively. In addition to the prevention of environmental pollution by the treatment of wastewater using the pilot-scale treatment system, the reuse of the recovered water will contribute to the protection of our valuable water resources. The heterogeneous Electro-Fenton (EF) process is a promising wastewater treatment technology that can generate onsite H 2 O 2 , and operate in a wide pH range without generating a metal sludge. However, the heterogeneous EF process needs bifunctional cathode electrodes that can have high activity in 2e - oxygen reduction reaction and H 2 O 2 decomposition. Herein, ZnFeV layered double hydroxide (LDH), as a heterogeneous catalyst, was coated on the graphite felt (ZnFeV LDH@GF) cathode using the electrophoretic deposition method. ZnFeV LDH@GF cathode was able to generate 59.8 ± 5.9 mg L -1 H 2 O 2 in 90 min under a constant supply of O 2 . EF process with ZnFeV LDH@GF cathode exhibited 89.8 ± 6.8% removal efficiency for pharmaceutical (ciprofloxacin) at neutral pH. Remarkably, the apparent reaction rate constant (k app ) of the ZnFeV LDH@GF-EF was 2.14 times that of the EF process with pristine GF. ZnFeV LDH coating increased the hydroxyl radical ( • OH) production of the EF process from 1.74 mM to 3.65 mM. The pathway of • OH production is thought to be a single electron transfer from redox couples of Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ and [Formula: see text] to H 2 O 2 . After 10 reuse cycles, the ZnFeV LDH@GF cathode retained 90.2% of its efficiency. The bamboo family of plants is one of the fastest-growing species in the world. As such, there is an abundance of bamboo residues available for exploitation, especially in southeast Asian, central African and south American regions. The preparation of efficient adsorbents from bamboo residues is an emerging exploitation pathway. Biochars, activated carbons or raw bamboo fibers embedded with nanoparticles, each class of materials has been shown to be highly efficient in adsorption processes. This review aims to summarize recent findings in the application of bamboo-based adsorbents in the removal of organic, inorganic, or gaseous pollutants. Therefore, this review first discusses the preparation methods and surface modification methodologies and their effects on the adsorbent elemental content and other basic properties. The following sections assess the recent progress in the adsorption of heavy metals, organics, and gaseous substances by bamboo-based adsorbents, focusing on the optimum adsorption capacities, adsorption mechanisms and the optimum-fitting kinetic models and isotherms. Antibiotics are among the most common medicine groups since they are used to treat infectious diseases, as nutritional supplements in livestock breeding, and for preservation in the food industry. Turkey is among the highest antibiotic consumers in the world. In the present study, the most popular 14 antibiotics available in Turkey were monitored in one hospital sewage and two urban wastewater treatment plant influents and effluents seasonally in Istanbul province, the largest metropolitan center in Turkey. The present research aimed to develop a robust analytical method to determine 14 antibiotics, including six chemical groups, in environmental matrices which are considered significant antibiotic pollution sources, namely hospital sewage and urban wastewater. Solid-phase extraction (SPE) and UPLC-MS/MS analysis parameters included optimized column temperature, eluent, mobile phase, and flow rate. Three SPE cartridges were employed in recovery studies. The antibiotic recovery rates varied between 40 and 100%, and all analytes were identified within 3 min with UPLC-MS/MS under optimal conditions. It was determined that method detection limits (MDLs) varied between 0.07 and 2.72 µg/L for the antibiotics. In all seasons, the highest beta-lactam group antibiotic concentrations were identified in hospital sewage. The season with the greatest variety of antibiotics in urban wastewater was spring. Clarithromycin and ciprofloxacin were the antibiotics determined at the highest concentration in the influent and effluent of the wastewater treatment plant in all seasons. This study showed that the most widely used beta-lactam group antibiotics were found in high amounts in hospital sewage wastewater but in low concentrations in the treatment plants, and hence, it is seen that the degradability of beta-lactam group antibiotics was high. The presence of clarithromycin, ciprofloxacin, lincomycin, levofloxacin, and trimethoprim antibiotics in hospital sewage in higher amounts and also in inlet and outlet of wastewater treatment plants proves that those are resistant antibiotics., (© 2023. Landfill leachate treatment involved with the membrane bioreactor (MBR) combined with membrane treatment via nanofiltration (NF) and/or reverse osmosis (RO) is widely used in Turkey. This treatment produces landfill leachate membrane concentrates (LLMCs) with an undesirably high concentration of contaminants. In the study, two different nanofiltration concentrates of leachate were coagulated. Coagulant dosages from 0.10 to 5.0 g of Me 3+ /L (Me 3+ : Al 3+ or Fe 3+ ), and the pH values ranged from 4.0 to 8.0 and 3.0-9.0 for Al-based and Fe-based coagulants, respectively. The most efficient pH values were 5.0 and 4.0 for Al 3+ and Fe 3+ , respectively. These pH values are lower than those known to be effective in coagulants. The reason for this is the presence of humic substances in the wastewater. The cost of Fe 2 (SO 4 ) 3. xH 2 O was the lowest than other coagulants at the end of the cost analyses obtained from İstanbul region landfill leachate NF concentrate (NFCL-1) and Kocaeli region landfill leachate NF concentrate (NFCL-2). The novel porous nanocomposite sorbent was synthesized by the condensation of the diol monomer with the alkoxysilane cross-linker at moderately high temperatures in the presence of nano-CaCO 3 particles. The structural, thermal, and morphological properties of the nanocomposite sorbents were determined by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), solid-state CPMAS 13 C and 29 Si NMR, scanning electron microscope (SEM), and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). Adding nano-CaCO 3 to the network structure of the polymer not only provided pores to the sorbent but also enhanced its sorption capacity towards various oils and toxic organic solvents. The nanocomposite sorbent exhibited excellent absorption capacity for different toxic organic solvents and oils and great reusability for ten cycles. Moreover, the obtained sorbent material selectively absorbed organic liquids from the surface and bottom of the water without any capacity change owing to their hydrophobicity and oleophilicity. The use of synthetic dyes in the textile industry pollutes a huge amount of water. Thus, wastewater discharged from many textile companies to the receiving environment without being treated causes serious environmental and human health problems. The development of new techniques has become imperative. In this study, it was aimed to remove anionic dye (RR180) and cationic dye (BR18) by Fenton-like and adsorption process with hydrochars obtained from laurel leaves and watermelon peels. In the comparison of the adsorption and Fenton-like processes used in the dye removal of the produced bio-based materials, the Fenton-like process was selected in order to enhance the highest removal efficiency. The effects of various operating factors such as solution pH, amount of catalysts, hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) concentration, and initial dye concentration were evaluated on both dyes removal. The experimental results demonstrated that 99.8% RR180 dye and 98.8% BR18 dye removal efficiency were observed for an initial dye concentration of 100 mg/L with an adsorbent concentration of 1 g/L, H 2 O 2 concentration of 15 μL/L, and optimum pH at the end of 60 min of reaction time. It was observed that an increase in initial dye concentration caused to decrease the dye removal efficiency. The optimum pH for the highest RR180 and BR18 dye removal was 4 and 6, respectively. It was observed that the increase in H 2 O 2 concentration in the solution also decreased the dye removal efficiency. Printing and packaging process wastewater (PPPW) with high flow rates causes severe damage to the environment due to high organic pollution (3830.0 mg O 2 /L of COD and 813.6 mg/L of TOC) and turbidity (9110 NTU). This study examined the efficiencies of coagulation, Fenton, and photo-Fenton procedures, and their combinations in the treatment of PPPW. The three inorganic salts (FeCl 3 , Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 , and Fe 2 (SO 4 ) 3 ) were used in a wide range of pH (2.5-10) as a coagulant, and FeCl 3 was chosen as the optimum coagulant. The 71.3% of TOC removal and the decreasing of turbidity up to 5.8 NTU were obtained at 0.5 g/L FeCl 3 and pH of 6.0. Then, Fenton and photo-Fenton processes were applied to the effluent of the coagulation process. The Fenton process engaged the TOC removal efficiencies up to 85.2% in the presence of 7.350 g/L iron catalysts and 36.0 mL/L H 2 O 2 . The combined coagulation and Fenton process is a promising way to decrease the COD up to 119 mg O 2 /L, meeting the wastewater discharge standards of COD (200 mg O 2 /L) in Turkey. However, adding UV sources to the Fenton process showed a little bit of engagement (only %1.4 extra removal). When evaluated for PPPW, it is seen that the usage of combined coagulation and the Fenton process is an important treatment alternative. This study compares the efficiencies of active (Ti/TiO 2 -RuO 2 -IrO 2 (TIR)) and inactive (Ni/Boron Doped Diamond (BDD)) anodes in terms of pollutant treatment and by-product formation in pretreated (chemical coagulation) landfill leachate nanofiltration membrane concentrate (PLNC). PLNC has high chemical oxygen demand (COD:4900 mg/L), total organic carbon (TOC: 1874 mg/L), total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN: 520 mg/L), ammonium nitrogen (NH 3 -N: 21.35 mg/L), chloride (5700 mg/L) and sulfate (9000 mg/L - due to coagulant type). The parameters of COD, TOC, NH 3 -N, TKN, free and combined chlorine species, halogenated organic compounds (HOCs), adsorbable organic halogens (AOX), and nitrate at different current density (J: 111-555 A/m 2 ) and initial pH (pH i :3.5-7) were compared for both anodes. The removal efficiencies at the optimum conditions (pH i 5.5, 333 A/m 2 and 8 h) were obtained as 86.4% COD, 77.4% TOC, 93.4% TKN, 94.4% NH 3 -N with BDD and 34.3% COD, 27.3% TOC, 93.7% TKN, 97.4% NH 3 -N with TIR. According to gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) results obtained under optimum conditions, haloalkane/alkene, halonitroalkane, halonitrile, haloketone, haloalcohols, haloacids, haloaldehydes, haloamines/amides on both electrodes were detected as species of HOCs. Antibiotics and related pharmaceuticals are applied to enhance public health and life quality. A major environmental concern is wastewaters from pharmaceutical industries, which contain significant amounts of antibiotics. Pharmaceutical industries apply conventional processes (biological, filtration, coagulation, flocculation, and sedimentation) for wastewater treatment, but these approaches cannot remove antibiotics completely. Moreover, unmetabolized antibiotics released by humans and animals are dangerous for municipal and effluent wastewater. Besides, antibiotic resistance is another challenge in treatment of wastewater for superbugs. This comprehensive study summarizes different techniques for antibiotic removal with an emphasis on membrane technology in individual and hybrid systems such as chemical, physical, biological, and conditional-based strategies. A combination of membrane processes with advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), adsorption, and biological treatments can be the right solution for perfect removal. The manganese is successfully induced as a "bridge joint" to fabricate a new adsorbent (CNC-Mn-PEI) connecting cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) respectively. It was used to remove As (III) from waste water. It has been proved that the incompact CNC and PEI were successfully connected by Mn ions, which induced the formation of O-Mn-O bonds and the removal efficiency is maintained in the broad pH range of 4-8, even with the influence of NO 3 - and CO 3 2- . The CNC-Mn-PEI was characterized by Brunauer-Emmett-Telley (BET) method and the results showed that the nanoparticle of the specific surface area was 106.5753 m 2 /g, it has a significant improvement, compared with CNC-Mn-DW (0.1918 m 2 /g). The isotherm and kinetic parameters of arsenic removal on CNC-Mn-PEI were well-fitted by the Langmuir and pseudo-second-order models. The maximum adsorption capacities toward As (III) was 78.02 mg/g. After seven regeneration cycles, the removal of As (III) by the adsorbent decreased from 80.78% to 68.2%. Additionally, the hypothetical adsorption mechanism of "bridge joint" effect was established by FTIR and XPS, which provided the three activated sites from CNC-Mn-PEI can improve the arsenic removal efficiency, and providing a new stratagem for the arsenic pollution treatment., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Ltd. Microplastic pellets were sampled in May and November 2018 during one-week surveys at 13 coastal beaches in Iskenderun Bay/Turkey. Pellet pollution index (PPI) was calculated for the beaches as a tool to assess beach pollution by microplastic pellets. Hydrometeorological conditions, including wind, current, wave, surface run-off, and precipitation, were examined during 2018 to reveal the effect on the transport of microplastic pellets within the study area. Sea-surface heights, including the astronomical tide and the storm surge and the wave runup heights, were also considered in the analysis to study the extent of hydrodynamic forcing on the beach. Hydrometeorological assessments indicated that the pellet concentrations in the coastal zone are mostly related to wind-induced transport. Three major river discharges are considered as the main source of microplastic pellets effluents. A Lagrangian particle transport model was conducted to reveal the possible beaching hotspots of microplastic pellets released from these river mouths. Average microplastic pellets were calculated as 126.04 ± 54.08 items/m 2 for May 2018 and 70.22 ± 18.25 items/m 2 for November 2018. An overall mean PPI for May 2018 was calculated as 1.13, indicating a moderate degree of pellet pollution, and 0.56 for November 2018, indicating a low degree of pellet pollution. The photocatalytic effect of ferrous and cerium loaded catalysts produced from chitosan beads (CB) was investigated for dye removal and textile wastewater degradation. Commercially available chitosan was initially shaped into beads form and modified with ferrous and cerium compounds. The amount of ferrous and cerium loaded on the chitosan beads were calculated as 22 mg Fe/g CB, 60 mg Ce/g CB, respectively. The chemical formation and morphology of the catalysts were characterized with SEM-EDS. Photocatalytic studies with UVA irradiation were carried out using 20 mg/L Direct Orange 46 (DO46) textile dye solution, 1 g/L catalyst and 10 mM H 2 O 2 and the dye removal efficiencies for CB, Fe/CB and Ce/CB were obtained as 10%, 60% and 26%, respectively As a result of the characterization and photocatalytic studies, the produced Fe/CB was then used for the treatment of the textile industry wastewater and while 21% total organic carbon (TOC) removal efficiency was obtained, 30, 23 and 26% color removal efficiencies were calculated for 436, 525 and 620 nm wavelengths, respectively., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Ltd. In this work, the fluoxetine (FLX) removal has been studied via the anodic oxidation (AO) process. Anode electrodes were Ti/RuO 2 , Ti/RuO 2 -IrO 2 , and Ti/RuO 2 -IrO 2 -SnO 2 , and cathode electrodes were graphite and carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The performances of electrodes were compared in terms of FLX removal efficiency. As a result, Ti/RuO 2 -IrO 2 -SnO 2 and CNTs were the optimal anode and cathode, respectively. The properties of the optimal electrodes were investigated using scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and X-ray diffraction spectroscopy. Cyclic voltammetry analysis was performed to study the electrochemical behavior of electrodes. The effect of current intensity (mA), initial pH, initial FLX concentration (mg/L) and process time (min) on the FLX removal efficiency was investigated and the response surface methodology was applied for the optimization of the AO process. The results showed that at current intensity, pH, initial FLX concentration and process time of 500 mA, 6, 25 mg/L and 160 min, maximum FLX removal efficiency was observed, which was 96.25%. Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), and total organic carbon (TOC) analysis was determined to evaluate the intermediates, and mineralization efficiency. Geopolymers have been recently studied as environmentally friendly and low-cost adsorbents especially for the removal of cationic species in wastewater treatment mainly because of their negative surface charge at spontaneous pH conditions. Although there are very few recent studies conducted with different geopolymer composites on anionic dyes, high cost, difficulty of the composite preparation and most importantly the necessity of very low pH values limit their usage. Hence, in this study, a simple and low-cost surface modification with CTAB was applied to a previously prepared fly ash-based geopolymer (GEO) for the removal of anionic Acid Blue 185 (AB185) without the need of strongly acidic conditions. Within this scope, the effects of CTAB dosage (1-5% by weight of GEO), adsorbent dosage (0.5-3.0 g L -1 ) and initial dye concentration (10-50 mg L -1 ) were studied as a function of retention time (5-300 min). For 40 min, the removal efficiency of AB185 substantially increased from 0.29 up to 79.36% for the respective GEO and its modified product with 4% CTAB (MGEO4). The efficiency increased with the adsorbent (MGEO4) dosage of up to 2.0 g L -1 at which 89.20% was obtained for 300 min. However, a little decrease was observed down to 81.10% for 3.0 g L -1 . The efficiency values of 98.19 and 89.20% were obtained for the initial AB185 concentrations of 10 and 50 mg L -1 , respectively. The Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetic model is highly correlated with the experimental results. The high adsorption capacity attained in a very short time suggests that the main mechanism is based on physical adsorption via the electrostatic attraction between MGEO4 and AB185. Carbon-based compounds have gained attention of researchers for use in boron removal due to their properties, which make them a viable and low cost adsorbent with a high availability, as well as environmental friendliness and high removal efficiency. The removal of boron utilizing carbon-based materials, including activated carbon (AC), graphene oxide (GO), and carbon nanotubes (CNTs), is extensively reviewed in this paper. The effects of the operating conditions, kinetics, isotherm models, and removal methods are also elaborated. The impact of the modification of the lifetime of carbon-based materials has also been explored. Compared to unmodified carbon-based materials, modified materials have a significantly higher boron adsorption capability. It has been observed that adding various elements to carbon-based materials improves their surface area, functional groups, and pore volume. Tartaric acid, one of these doped elements, has been employed to successfully improve the boron removal and adsorption capabilities of materials. An assessment of the health risk posed to humans by boron in treated water utilizing carbon-based materials was performed to better understand the performance of materials in real-world applications. In this study, the heterogeneous electro-Fenton method was used to remove Paclitaxel as an antineoplastic medicine. The cathode based on three-dimensional graphene (3DG) was applied as a gas diffusion electrode. The potential of five eco-friendly and recyclable iron minerals derived from nature (Magnetite, Siderite, Hematite, Limonite, and Pyrite) was investigated. Among the applied iron minerals, Pyrite showed the best, and Magnetite and Siderite showed good catalytic activity at pH 3.0. The current intensity of 300 mA, pH i 7.0, Paclitaxel concentration of 3 mg L -1 , amount of Pyrite 4.5 g L -1 , and time of 120 min was the optimum condition of the process with the removal efficiency of 99.13% in the presence of Pyrite. Repeating the experiments eight times revealed the reusability of the prepared 3DG as a cathode. Also, using radical scavengers indicated the principal role of the hydroxyl radicals (OH) in the treatment process. Analysis of total organic carbon reached 77.64% mineralization of 3 mg L -1 Paclitaxel at 360 min. Arsenic (As) occurrence in water resources has become one of the most critical environmental problems worldwide. The detrimental health impacts on humans have been reported due to the consumption of As-contaminated groundwater resources. Consumption of As-containing water over the long term can cause arsenicosis and chronic effects on human health due to its toxicity. Several treatment processes are available for As removals such as coagulation, ion exchange, adsorption, and membrane technologies but they have various major drawbacks. In the present work, therefore, an aerated electrocoagulation (EC) system with aluminum anodes was operated for simultaneous arsenate (As(V)) and arsenite (As(III)) removal to overcome the disadvantages of other processes such as, sludge formation, difficulties in operation, high operating costs, high energy consumption, and the requirement of pre-treatment process and to enhance the conventional EC process. The combined effects of the applied current (0.075-0.3 A), aeration rate (0-6 L/min), pH (6.5-8.5), and As speciation (As(V)-As(III)) were studied on As removal efficiency. The findings revealed that As removal mostly depended on the airflow rate and the applied current in the EC system. The highest As removal efficiency (99.1%) was obtained at an airflow rate of 6 L/min, a pH of 6.5, an initial As (V) concentration of 200 μg/L, and a current of 0.3 A, with an energy consumption of 2.85 kWh/m 3 and an operating cost of 0.66 $/m 3 . The human health risk assessment of treated water was also examined to understand the performance of the EC system. At most of the experimental runs, the chronic toxic risk (CTR) and carcinogenic risk (CR) of As were within the permissible limits except for an airflow rate of 0-2 L/min, an initial pH of 8.5, and a current of 0.075-0.15 A for high initial As (III) concentrations. Eutrophication is a widespread environmental challenge caused by excessive phosphate. Thus, wastewater engineers primarily aim to limit the phosphate concentration in water bodies. Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are lamellar inorganic materials containing tunable brucite-like structures. This review discusses the fundamental aspects and latest developments in phosphate removal using LDH-based materials. Based on the divalent cations, Ca, Mg, and Zn-containing LDHs are largely used along with trivalent cations such as Al and Fe owing to their limited toxicities. However, classical LDHs are affected by the presence of co-existing anions, have a narrow working pH range, and have moderate adsorption capacities. Binary LDHs have been designed to be selective towards phosphate by the addition of a third metal such as Zr 4+ . Developing LDH composites with magnetic, polymeric or carbon materials are feasible approaches for increasing adsorption capacity, stability, and reusability of LDHs. Biochar as a carrier material for LDHs achieved remarkable phosphate adsorption performance and improved LDH dispersion, anion exchange capacity, and ease of separation. The aim of this study is to produce an electrode that can be used in H 2 O 2 production and Electro-Fenton (EF) process by an effective, cheap, and easy method. For this reason, a superhydrophobic electrode with a higher PTFE ratio and high thickness was produced with a simple press. The produced electrode was used in the production of H 2 O 2 and mineralization of Atrazine. First, the effect of pH, cathode voltage, and operation time on H 2 O 2 production was evaluated. The maximum H 2 O 2 concentration (409 mg/L), the highest current efficiency (99.80%), and the lowest electrical energy consumption (3.16 kWh/kg) were obtained at 0.8 V, 7.0 of pH, and 120 min, and the stability of the electrode was evaluated up to 720 min. Then, the effects of the operational conditions (pH, cathode voltage, operating time, and catalyst concentration) in electro-Fenton were evaluated. The fastest degradation of Atrazine (>99%) was obtained at 2.0 V, 3.0 of pH, and 0.3 mM of Fe 2+ in 15 min. The carbonaceous materials have gained significant interest for the phosphorus species remediation and recovery in the last decade. Carbonaceous materials present many unique features, such as cost effective, availability, environmentally friendly, and high removal efficiency that make them a promising adsorbent. In this review, the recent application of carbonaceous materials including activated carbon (AC), graphene and graphene oxide (GO), lignin, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and gC 3 N 4 for phosphate removal and recovery were comprehensively summarized. The kinetics and isotherm models, removal mechanisms, and effects of operating parameters are reported. The reusability, lifetime of carbonaceous materials, and impact of modification were also considered. The modified carbonaceous materials have significantly high phosphate adsorption capacity compared to unmodified adsorbents. Namely, MgO-functionalized lignin-based bio-charcoal exhibited a 906.8 mg g -1 of capacity as the highest one among other reviewed materials. The modification of carbonaceous materials with various elements has been presented to improve the surface functional groups, surface area and charge, and pore volume and size. Among these loaded elements, iron has been effectively used to provide a prospect for magnetic recovery of the adsorbent as well as increase phosphate adsorption. Furthermore, the phosphate recovery methods, phosphate removal efficiency of carbonaceous materials, the limitations, important gaps in the literature, and future studies to enhance applicability of carbonaceous materials in real scale are also discussed., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. Synthetic polymers having hydrophobic cross-linked structures in order to remove oil spills have been gaining interest in environmental applications. Herein, a series of sorbents were produced by using PEG-b-PPG and PEG-co-PPG triols and organosilane cross-linker via bulk polymerization. The polymer sorbents were characterized by FTIR, thermal gravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and their interests towards polar and nonpolar solvents were examined via swelling, absorption-desorption kinetics and reusability tests. Besides, the effect of block-, copolymer-of PEG and PPG triol macromonomer on oil and water absorbency is investigated. The obtained sorbents exhibited high and quick absorption abilities towards organic liquids that were in the range of 5-28 gg -1 . Moreover, they can selectively remove the oil from oil/water mixtures and can repeatedly be applied for absorbing oils. The reusability test shows that the polymer sorbents maintained their absorption-desorption loop with no structural change or capacity loss after 10 cycles. In this study, an electro-oxidation (EO) process using graphite electrodes as electrode pairs was used for the removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammoniacal nitrogen (NH 4 + -N), and color from real textile printing wastewater. The effects of solution pH, sodium chloride (NaCl) dosage, sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), which is the oldest and still most important chlorine-based bleach, dosage, and oxidation time were investigated on the removal efficiencies. Operating conditions for the EO reactor were applied to current density 1 mA/cm 2 , distance between the electrodes: 2 cm, 150 min operation time, and stirring speed of 500 rpm. At optimum conditions: pH 9.5, applied current density 1 mA/cm 2 , NaCl dosage of 8 g/L, NaOCl dosage of 44.4 mg/L and 150 min electro-oxidation time, the obtained removal efficiencies were 86.5% and 91.1% for chemical oxygen demand (COD) and ammoniacal nitrogen, respectively. Efficiency was increased to 91.1% for ammoniacal nitrogen from 21.7% after applying EO combined with NaOCl addition compared to individual NaOCl addition.

In the present study, heterogeneous electro-Fenton (EF) process was applied to remove the sulfasalazine (SU) pharmaceutical from aqueous solutions. In the first part, 3D graphene loaded with Fe@Fe 2 O 3 core-shell nanowires (Fe@Fe 2 O 3 /3D-GO) was used as a cathode electrode in the EF process. Graphene oxide (GO) was synthesized for the synthesis of 3D graphene nanocomposites using the improved Hummers' method and subsequently 3D graphene synthesized by the hydrothermal method using glycine. Finally, Fe@Fe 2 O 3 /3D-GO composite was synthesized and its properties were assessed by Scanning electron microscopy, Atomic force microscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction methods. Then, the cathode electrode was prepared using the resulting composite and its performance was evaluated using Cyclic Voltammetry analysis. In the final part of this work, the Fe@Fe 2 O 3 /3D-GO electrode was used as the cathode electrode in the heterogeneous EF process to remove SU from aqueous solutions. The effect of operating parameters such as applied current (mA), initial pH of solution, initial pharmaceutical concentration (mg L -1 ) and process time (min) on pharmaceutical removal efficiency under heterogeneous EF process was investigated by response surface methodology. The results showed that the optimum values for applied current, pH, initial pharmaceutical concentration and electrolysis time were respectively 300 mA, 7, 30 mg L -1 and 100 min, resulting 99.60% of SU removal. Finally, the intermediates of SU degradation were determined by Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis and the amount of mineralization was determined by total organic carbon analysis. Bisphenol A (BPA) is a known endocrine disrupter and was detected in surface waters. We investigated the mineralization of BPA by electrochemical oxidation. Six different types of electrodes, including the boron-doped diamond (BDD), platinum (Pt), and mixed metal oxide (MMO) electrodes; RuO 2 -IrO 2 , RuO 2 -TiO 2 , IrO 2 -Ta 2 O 5 , and Pt-IrO 2 , were compared as the anode material. Total organic carbon (TOC) was analyzed to monitor the mineralization efficiency of BPA. BDD achieved 100% BPA mineralization efficiency in 180 min and at a current density of 125 mA/cm 2 , whereas the TOC removal efficiency of Pt was 60.9% and the efficiency of MMO electrodes ranged between 48 and 54%. BDD exhibited much lower specific energy consumption, which corresponds to a lower energy cost (USD63.4 /kg TOC). The effect of operational parameters showed that the BDD anode was much more affected by the current density, initial BPA concentration, and electrolyte concentration than the other parameters such as the stirring speed and interelectrode distance.

The present paper reports the efficiency of bog peat-derived humic acid (HA) in the reductive removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr VI ) from aqueous solution as affected by solution pH, the dose of Fe III and reaction time (numeric variables) and light irradiation (categorical variable). A three-level Box-Behnken design (BBD) applied to design experimental matrix, model the effects and interactions of variables on four determined responses (residual concentration of dissolved Cr VI , dissolved Cr III , dissolved Fe II and total Cr VI ) and optimize the experimental conditions for highest Cr VI removal efficiency (Cr VI RE). Reaction mechanisms are also well discussed. Regression models were developed and analyzed by the ANOVA test and models determination coefficient R 2 . Obtained models were significant (F values > 13) and an excellent relationship between experimental and predicted responses (R 2 : 98.1-99.6%) was observed. The optimum conditions were established corresponding to the residual concentration of dissolved Cr VI as an index for Cr VI removal efficiency (RE). In the dark system, the highest Cr VI RE (98.1%) was obtained under the following conditions: pH = 1, reaction time = 7 d and Fe III dosage = 0.110 mM. In the light-irradiated system, the optimal Cr VI RE of 98.3% was observed in pH = 1, reaction time = 5 d and Fe III dosage = 0.075 mM. Almost all reduced Cr III remained in the solution even at high pH value. Co-occurrence of arsenic and anions in groundwater causes a severe health problems and combine effects of these pollutants significantly affect performance of treatment process. Thus, this study has been conducted to examine the combine effects of anions on arsenic removal using aerated electrocoagulation (EC) reactor with 3D Al electrodes in groundwater. A 3-level, six factors Box-Behnken experimental design (BBD) was applied to investigate the individual and combine effect of anions and operating time: phosphate (x 1 : 1-10 mg L -1 ), silica (x 2 : 20-80 mg L -1 ), bicarbonate (x 3 : 130-670 mg L -1 ), fluoride (x 4 : 2-10 mg L -1 ), boron (x 5 : 5-10 mg L -1 ), and operating time (x 6 : 8-22 min) on desired responses. The specified responses were effluent arsenic concentration (C f,As ), removal efficiency of arsenic (R e ), consumptions of energy and electrode (ENC and ELC), operational cost (OC), and adsorption capacity (q e ). The optimum operating parameters predicted using BBD were found to be x 1 : 1.0 mg L -1 , x 2 : 26.0 mg L -1 , x 3 : 651.5 mg L -1 , x 4 : 2.0 mg L -1 , x 5 : 9.9 mg L -1 , and x 6 : 10.5 min considering highest removal efficiency of arsenic and lowest operational cost. Under these operating conditions, the experimental values of C f,As , R e , ENC, ELC, OC, and q e were found to be 2.82 μg L -1 , 98.6%, 0.411 kWh m -3 , 0.0124 kg m -3 , 0.098 $ m -3 , and 17.65 μg As (mg Al) -1 , respectively. The objective of this study was the experimental evaluation of ozonation as an additional treatment step for the removal emerging contaminants from secondary effluents of two wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), one receiving a primarily domestic wastewater (WWTP-A), and the other one domestic sewage together with pretreated tannery wastewater streams (WWTP-B). The experimental runs were conducted at two different pH values (i.e., original pH and adjusted pH of 10) and at six different ozone doses ranging between 0.2 and 1.5 mg O 3 /mg DOC. A total of 20 compounds, including 12 micropollutants (MPs) and 8 metabolites, were selected as the target analytes for the evaluation of ozonation performance. When the tested MPs and metabolites were considered individually, the maximum elimination level for each compound was reached at different doses; therefore, optimum ozone doses were determined based on the reduction of the total MP content. Ozonation at the original pH with an ozone dose in the range of 0.4-0.6 and 0.8-1.0 mg O 3 /mg DOC was selected as the optimum operating condition for WWTP-A and WWTP-B, respectively, both resulting in an average overall removal efficiency of 55%. Ozone treatment yielded only poor elimination for o-desmethyl naproxen (15%), which was found to be by far the main contributor accounting alone for approximately 30% of the total MP concentration in the secondary effluents. The systematic approach used in this study could well be adopted as a guide to other domestic and municipal WWTPs, which are thought to have a highly variable composition in terms of the MPs and metabolites.

This study presents the removal of thiocyanate (SCN - ) from coke oven wastewater by the electrooxidation (EO) process. Initially, the performances boron-doped diamond (BDD) and different DSA (Dimensionally stable anode) electrodes including Ti/IrO 2 , Ti/IrO 2 -RuO 2 , and Ti/IrO 2 -RuO 2 -TiO 2 in SCN - removal were compared. BDD anode outperformed the Ti-based mixed metal oxide (MMO) anodes achieving 96.51% SCN - removal efficiency. The most favorable conditions for the removal of SCN - using BDD anode were determined as follows: pH = 9, current density = 43.10 A m -2 , and the electrolyte concentration (Na 2 SO 4 ) = 2.5 g L -1 . The strong role of ⦁ OH in the removal of SCN - was confirmed by the addition of radical quenching agents. The evolution of the intermediates as a result of the EO of SCN - was determined. Under the determined conditions, the EO process could remove 84.13% of SCN - and 94.67% of phenol from a real coke oven wastewater, which was comparable to that of the simulated solution. The electrical energy consumption cost of the process to remove 1 kg of SCN - was calculated as 0.208 US $. The modified multifunctional electrodes for electro-Fenton (EF) process are suggested to be promising cathodes for in situ electro-generation and activation of H 2 O 2 to produce hydroxyl radicals ( • OH). However, heterogeneous EF process still faces the challenges of limited catalytic activity and releasing of massive amounts of transition metals to the solution after removal of organic pollutants. The main aim of the present investigation was to prepare a cathode containing carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and CuFe nano-layered double hydroxide (NLDH) for degradation and mineralization of cefazolin antibiotic through electro-Fenton process. Structural and electrochemical analyses demonstrated that CuFeNLDH-CNTs nanocomposite was successfully incorporated on the surface of graphite cathode. Due to the increased formation of • OH in the reactor, the incorporation of CNTs into NLDH matrix with a catalyst loading of 0.1 g substantially improved the degradation efficiency of cefazolin (89.9%) in comparison with CNTs-coated (28.7%) and bare graphite cathode (22.8%) within 100 min. In the presence of 15 mM of ethanol, the degradation efficiency of cefazolin was remarkably decreased to 43.7% by the process, indicating the major role of • OH in the destruction of target molecules. Acidic conditions favored the degradation efficiency of cefazolin by the modified EF process. Mineralization efficiency of the bio-refractory compound was obtained to be 70.1% in terms of chemical oxygen demand (COD) analysis after 300 min. The application of conventional electrocoagulation (EC) process for removal of As(III) from groundwater suffers from the need of external oxidation agent for oxidation of As(III) to As(V). To tackle this limitation, an aerated EC reactor for the removal of As(III) from groundwater was evaluated in this study. The effect of initial pH i , air flow rate, applied current, and electrode height in the EC reactor was examined. The experimental results showed that removal of arsenic mostly dependent on the applied current, electrode height in EC reactor, and air flow rate. The As(III) removal efficiency (99.2%) was maximum at pH i of 7.5, air flow rate of 6 L min -1 , applied current of 0.30 A, and electrode height in EC reactor of 5 cm, with an total operating cost of 0.583 $ m -3 . Furthermore, the carcinogenic risk (CR) and non-carcinogenic risk of arsenic (As) was in the range of tolerable limits at all operating conditions except applied current of 0.075 A at the end of the aerated EC process to remove As from groundwater. This paper offers a feasible solution for the treatment of membrane concentrate produced from the textile industry, using the Fenton, Advanced Fenton (AF), ozonation and hydrodynamic cavitation (HC) and combination of these processes. The study investigated the optimum oxidant and catalyst concentrations, optimum operational conditions and comparison of these processes. The potential formation of chlorinated organic compounds after oxidation of membrane concentrate was also investigated by analyzing total organic halogen (TOX) and polychlorinated biphenyl (PCBs). Also, toxicity analysis was performed with Vibrio fischeri photobacteria to identify the production possibility of oxidation intermediates that are more toxic and difficult to treat than the targeted contaminants. Maximum removal efficiencies in chemical oxygen demand (COD) and color were 18.8% and 60.7% respectively using HC alone at a cavitation number (CN) of 0.1. Maximum COD, total organic carbon (TOC), and color removal efficiency at molar concentrations of 175 mM H 2 O 2 and 35 mM Fe 2+ and pH 3 after 30 min was 87.1, 80.8 and 99%. Combined HC with Fenton showed the highest removal efficiency in terms of COD, TOC, and color. It was also stated that the use of high oxidant concentrations masks the synergistic effect of HC on Fenton processes due to the scavenging effect.

The leaking of harmful organic liquids into water resources has had hazardous impacts on living organisms. Herein, we demonstrated the fabrication of hybrid sorbents using s-PPG and organosilane cross-linker. The final product exhibited high, quick absorption capacity, great reusability and excellent oil separation performance from wastewater. They also selectively absorb different oils from the bottom and surface of water without any capacity change, even in harsh conditions like wavy and sub-zero water environment. Experimental results demonstrated that the obtained sorbents are efficient to successfully remove oil from water surface, even at harsh conditions, and float on the water surface before and after oil sorption without any capacity loss and structural change. Simple preparation by avoiding time consuming multistep process, initiator, solvent, activator free reaction medium, high and selective sorption characteristics and great reusability could make these sorbents a promising candidate for the cleaning of water from harmful organic liquids, by absorbing them., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Multiphase flow modeling is often used for the comparison and optimization of subsurface nonaqueous phase liquid (NAPL) remediation schemes. The calibration of such models is a challenging task due to the lack of detailed data describing the initial NAPL spatial distribution and the processes governing the fate and transport of NAPLs in porous media. In this study laboratory scale experiments were conducted to evaluate reagent-enhanced dense nonaqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) solubilization in saturated heterogeneous media. The DNAPL consisted of both pooled and residual saturation forms. To gain insight into the influence of various input parameters on effluent concentrations, the multiphase flow program was used to compute the sensitivity coefficients of key parameters, relating to the flow, flushing solution properties, soil parameters, NAPL distribution and mass transfer coefficient. The sensitivity coefficients were, in turn, used to aid in the model calibration and to underline the difficulties associated with the calibration of multiphase flow models, most notably the non-uniqueness of the calibration process when complete information is lacking. To alleviate this uncertainty and provide additional constraints, the conducted flushing experiments were jointly used to calibrate the multiphase flow model. The results of the model calibration suggest that the interphase mass transfer coefficient is dependent on the properties of the reagent aqueous solution used for DNAPL remediation, most notably the viscosity and interfacial tension., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier B.V. Emet and Orhaneli stream basins are characterized by intense mining of colemanite, the main borate mineral in the area. Unlike other global borate deposits, the colemanite of this region contains arsenic minerals (realgar and orpiment). Undoubtedly, improper management of mine wastes causes pollution of water resources, affecting human life and biota. In the present study, spatial and temporal variation in water quality of Emet and Orhaneli streams was assessed. The water quality index (WQI) model was used to rate the overall status of the water, and geographical information systems (GIS) was used to aid the visualization of results. No significant differences in WQIs for the three-monitoring periods (March, July and October 2017) were noted. The WQI in the region is highly influenced by arsenic (As) and boron (B), with a strong positive correlation (p < 0.05, r 2  = 0.971). The As and B concentrations in Emet stream were 1.88-1907 μg/L and 0.01-1900 mg/L, respectively. Whereas for Orhaneli stream, respective As and B levels ranged from 5.17 to 116 μg/L and 0.01 to 5.45 mg/L. Globally, the As level in Emet stream basin is comparable to some of the words major contaminated regions such as Rapti River Basin (India) and Xieshui River (China). However, the uniqueness of this basin is seen in B and As trends, and input routes like active geothermal waters and weathering of the realgar (AsS) and orpiment (As 2 S 3 ) from colemanite nodules. This paper demonstrates the influence of pollutants associated with basin geochemistry and exploration of mineral resources on WQI.

This study performed in Sapanca Lake catchment area, used as a drinking water resource. Two highways located at northern and southern shores, and a railway at its south are significant sources of pollution. As a possible solution for protecting water quality a pocket wetland constructed and operated. Performances statistically interpreted by Spearman's Correlation test and univariate analysis of variance on collected data. The mean removal efficiencies obtaited were 52% (TSS), 4% (Nitrate), 26% (TN), -5% (TOC), 63% (TP), 4.5% (Chloride), 3% (Sulfate), 33% (Cr), 39% (Co), -19.5% (Ni), 7% (Cu), 55% (Zn), 36% (As), 38% (Cd) and 18% (Pb). TSS removal was in positive significant medium correlation with Co, Cu, Zn, and Pb removal respectively (p < 0.05). Other statistically significant positive high correlations calculated between removal efficiency of Nitrate-TN, Chloride-Sulfate, Cr-Co-Cu-As-Cd. According to ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis test results, removal efficiencies of TSS and TOC partially affected by different temperature (p < 0.1 for TSS and p < 0.05 for TOC) and pH ranges (p < 0.1 for both removal efficiencies), TP removal efficiency significantly affected by different pH ranges (p < 0.001), and Chloride and Sulfate removal efficiencies were significantly (p < 0.001) affected by different temperature ranges. Regardless of geographical location and climatic factors, pocket wetland systems can be relied upon for minimizing heavy metals such as Cr, Co, Zn, As, Cd and Pb and critical pollutants such as TP and TSS caused by highway runoff., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Adsorption and advanced oxidation processes are being extensively used for treatment of wastewater containing dye chemicals. In this study, the adsorption and Fenton behavior of iron rich Terra Rosa soil was investigated for the treatment of aqueous anthraquinone dye (Reactive Blue 19 (RB19)) solutions. The impact of pH, initial dye concentration, soil loading rate, contact time and temperature was systematically investigated for adsorption process. A maximum removal efficiency of dye (86.6%) was obtained at pH 2, soil loading of 10 g/L, initial dye concentration of 25 mg/L, and contact time of 120 min. Pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, Elovich, and Weber-Morris kinetic models were applied to describe the adsorption mechanism and sorption kinetic followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Moreover, Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin isotherm models were used to investigate the isothermal mechanism and equilibrium data were well represented by the Langmuir equation. The maximum adsorption capacity of soil was found as 4.11 mg/g using Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The effect of soil loading and hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) dosage was solely tested for Fenton oxidation process. The highest removal efficiency of dye (89.4%) was obtained at pH 2, H 2 O 2 dosage of 10 mM, soil loading of 5 g/L, initial dye concentration of 50 mg/L, and contact time of 60 min. Thermodynamic studies showed that when the adsorption dosage of dye was 25 mg/L at 293-313 K, adsorption enthalpy (ΔH) and entropy (ΔS) were negative and adsorption free energy (ΔG) was positive. This result indicated that the adsorption was exothermic. Morphological characteristics of the soil were evaluated by X-ray fluorescence (XRF), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy before and after the adsorption and oxidation process.

The removal of some pollutants in the Sakarya River was investigated in this study. Sakarya River located in Turkey flows from the northeast of Afyonkarahisar City to the Black Sea. Nineteen different micropollutants including trihalomethanes (THMs), haloacetic acids (HAAs), endocrine disrupting compound (EDC) and pharmaceuticals personal care product (PPCP) groups, and water quality parameters such as dissolved organic carbon (DOC), ultraviolet absorbance at 254 nm wavelength (UV 254 ), hardness, and conductivity values were examined. To remove the micropollutants and improve the water quality, the treatment was performed with ozone, microfiltration (MF), and ultra-filtration (UF) membranes. The highest treatment efficiency was obtained with 1 mg/L ozone dosage and UP005 UF membrane. The trihalomethan formation potential (THMFP) and haloacetic acid formation potential (HAAFP) decreased with ozone + membrane at a concentration of 79 and 75%, respectively. After the treatment with ozone + membrane, the concentration of the micropollutants in the EDC and PPCP group remained below the detection limit. It was found that by using only membrane and only ozone, the maximum DOC removal efficiency achieved was 46 and 18%, respectively; and with ozone + membrane, this efficiency increased up to 82%. The results from the High-Pressure Size Exclusion Chromatography (HPSEC) analyses pointed that the substances with high molecular weight were converted into substances with low molecular weight after the treatment. The Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) analysis results showed that the aromatic and aliphatic functional groups in water changed after the treatment with ozone and that the peak values decreased more after the ozone + membrane treatment.

Glycerol propoxylate based oil loving sorbents were prepared through bulk polymerization, without using of an activator, initiator, or catalyst. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), 13 C and 29 Si CPMAS nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), as well as elemental analysis and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) were operated in order to identify the structural and thermal features of sorbents. The synthesized gels were employed as absorbents for various organic solvents and oils. The swelling capacity, absorption-desorption kinetics, reusability, and selective removal from an oil/water mixture were also examined. To explore the effects of a crosslinker's concentration on oil absorption capacity, star type propoxylate monomers were reacted at different concentration of tris[3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl]isocyanurate (ICS) crosslinker; swelling capacity was calculated using dichloromethane as an organic solvent. Organic-inorganic hybrid gels were synthesized by the condensation of a linear aliphatic diol (1,8-octanediol) and altering the chain length of the alkyltriethoxysilanes (from ethyltriethoxysilane to hexadecyltrimethoxysilane) through a bulk polymerization process without using any initiator, activator, catalyst, or solvent for the selective removal of oils from water. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and solid-state (13)C and (29)Si cross-polarization magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (CPMAS NMR) were used for the structural analysis of hybrid gels. Thermal properties of the hybrid gels were determined by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Oil absorbency of organic-inorganic hybrid gels was determined by oil absorption tests. The results showed that hybrid gels have high and fast absorption capacities and excellent reusability. Good selectivity, high thermal stability, low density, and excellent recyclability for the oil removal give the material potential applications.

Novel cross-linked poly(alkoxysilane)s, which can be used for the removal of organic liquid contaminants from water, were synthesized in one step, in a solvent free reaction medium, at moderately high temperature without using a catalyst. The synthesized polymers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), solid-state (13)C and (29)Si cross-polarization magic angle spinning (CPMAS) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) methods and elemental analysis. The swelling features of the poly(alkoxysilane)s were investigated in organic solvents and oils, such as dichloromethane, benzene, toluene, xylene, methyl tertiary butyl ether, and also some fuel derivatives, such as gasoline and euro diesel. All polymers have high-fast solvent uptake abilities, good reusability and thermal stability. The swelling features of the synthesized cross-linked polymers were evaluated by the swelling test, absorption-desorption kinetics. In this study, response surface methodology (RSM) was used to investigate the effects of different operating conditions on the removal of ciprofloxacin (CIP) by the electrocoagulation (EC) with pure iron electrodes. Box-Behnken design was used for the optimization of the EC process and to evaluate the effects and interactions of process variables such as applied current density, process time, initial CIP concentration and pH on the removal of CIP by the EC process. The optimum conditions for maximum CIP removal (86.6%) were found as pH = 4; Co = 5 mg.L(1-); Id = 4.325 mA.cm(2-); tprocess = 10 min. The model adequacy and the validity of the optimization step were confirmed with additional experiments which were performed under the proposed optimum conditions. The predicted CIP removal as 86.6% was achieved at each experiment by using the optimum conditions. These results specify that the RSM is a useful tool for optimizing the operational conditions for CIP removal by the EC process.

Anionic functionalized monolithic macro-porous polymers were used for the removal of hexavalent chromium(VI) anions from aqueous solution in column experiments. At a flux of 1.0 cm min and 30 mg Cr(VI) L(-1) feed concentration, breakthrough capacity and apparent capacity were 0.066 g Cr(VI) g(-1) anionic monolith and 0.144 g Cr(VI) g(-1) anionic monolith, respectively. The degree of column utilization was found to lie in the range 41-46%. Two kinetic models, theoretical and Thomas models, were applied to experimental data to predict the breakthrough curves and to determine the characteristic parameters of the column useful for process design. The simulation of the whole breakthrough curve was effective with the models. At a flux of 1.0 cm min and 30 mg Cr(VI) L(-1) feed concentration, the dispersion coefficient and adsorption equilibrium constant (K) were 3.14 × 10(-7) m s(-1) and 3,840, respectively. Also, Thomas model parameters k1 (rate constant of adsorption) and qm (equilibrium solid-phase concentration of sorbed solute) were 1.08 × 10(-3) L mg(-1) min(-1) and 0.124 g g(-1), respectively. After reaching equilibrium adsorption capacity, the monoliths were regenerated using 1 N HCl and were subsequently re-tested. It was found that the regeneration efficiency reduced from 98% after second usage to 97% after the third usage.

In this study, reusable poly(alkoxysilane) organogels with high absorption capacities were synthesized by the condensation of a cyclo aliphatic glycol (UNOXOL™) and altering the chain length of the alkyltriethoxysilanes. The structural and thermal properties of cross-linked poly(alkoxysilane) polymers were determined by FTIR, solid-state (13)C and (29)Si CPMAS NMR and TGA. The oil absorbency of poly(alkoxysilane)s was determined through oil absorption tests, absorption and desorption kinetics. Results showed that the highest oil absorbency capacities were found to be 295% for hexane, 389% for euro diesel, 428% for crude oil, 652% for gasoline, 792% for benzene, 792% for toluene, 868% for tetrahydrofuran, and 1060% for dichloromethane for the poly(alkoxysilane) gels based on UNOXOL™ and dodecyltriethoxysilane. Owing to their hydrophobic structure, the poly(alkoxysilane) organogels can selectively absorb crude oil from water. In this study, game theory and fuzzy programming approaches were used to balance economic and environmental impacts in the Namazgah reservoir, Turkey. The main goals identified were to maximize economic benefits of land use and to protect water quality of reservoir and land resources. Total phosphorous load (kg ha(-1) year(-1)) and economic income (USD ha(-1) year(-1)) from land use were determined as environmental value and economic value, respectively. The surface area of existing land use types, which are grouped under 10 headings according to the investigations on the watershed area, and the constraint values for the watershed were calculated using aerial photos, master plans, and basin slope map. The results of fuzzy programming approach were found to be very close to the results of the game theory model. It was concluded that the amount of fertilizer used in the current situation presents a danger to the reservoir and, therefore, unnecessary fertilizer use should be prevented. Additionally, nuts, fruit, and vegetable cultivation, instead of wheat and corn cultivation, was found to be more suitable due to their high economic income and low total phosphorus (TP) load. Apart from agricultural activities, livestock farming should also be considered in the area as a second source of income. It is believed that the results obtained in this study will help decision makers to identify possible problems of the watershed.
