Metalimnetic oxygen minimum (MOM) occurs in reservoirs or lakes due to stratification and algal blooms, which has low dissolved oxygen (DO) levels and leads to the deterioration of water quality. The transformation mechanism and the impact on the water quality of intracellular organic matter (IOM) derived from algae are poorly understood under MOM conditions. In this study, IOM extracted by Microcystis aeruginosa was divided into five components according to molecular weight (MW), and the changes of characteristics and correlated disinfection by-products formation potential (DBPFP) were analyzed and compared under MOM conditions. The removal efficiency of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in the <5 kDa fraction (66.6%) was higher than that in the >100 kDa fraction (41.8%) after a 14-day incubation under MOM conditions. The same tendency also occurred in Fmax and DBPFP. The decrease in Fmax was mainly due to the decline in tryptophan-like and tyrosine-like for all IOM fractions. The diversity of microorganisms degrading the MW > 100 kDa fraction was lower than others. Bioremediation is one of the effective ways for heavy metal remediation. Iron-modified biochar (F@BC) loaded with Bacillus pseudomycoides (BF@BC) was synthesized to remove the coexistence of cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As) in solutions. The results showed that B. pseudomycoides significantly increased the removal rate of Cd(II) by enhancing the specific surface area and Si-containing functional groups of biochar (BC). The surface of F@BC was enriched with Fe-containing functional groups, significantly improving As(III) adsorption. The combination of ferrihydrite and strains on BF@BC enhanced the removal of Cd(II) and As(III). It also promoted the oxidation of As(III) by producing an abundance of hydroxyl radicals (·OH). The maximum saturated adsorption capacity of BF@BC for Cd(II) and As(III) increased by 52.47% and 2.99 folds compared with BC, respectively. Element doping is considered as a feasible strategy to develop efficient photocatalysts. In this study, a Ce-doped CdIn 2 S 4 photocatalyst was prepared through a modified coprecipitation method. During the synthesis of Ce-doped CdIn 2 S 4 , the CeO 2 nanorods were gradually reduced by the decomposition products of thioacetamide (TAA), and mainly existed as Ce(III) in the supernatant. This resulted in a large increase in the specific surface area of the as-obtained products, providing more exposed active sites for the reactant. Additionally, a trace amount of Ce was doped into the lattice of the CdIn 2 S 4 , resulting in a significant effect on the band structure. By tracing the roles of CeO 2 during the synthesis process, a possible reaction mechanism was proposed. Benefiting from the synergistic advantages of the structural and compositional features, the optimal sample showed enhanced photocatalytic activities for the degradation of methyl orange (94.6% within 25 min) and tetracycline hydrochloride (85.6% within 120 min). The degradation rates were 13.3 times and 2.7 times higher than that of pristine CdIn 2 S 4 . The metalimnetic oxygen minimum (MOM) is a common anaerobic phenomenon that occur between 5.00 and 40.00 m of reservoirs. Amino acids (AAs) are widely found in water, but their change in MOM remain unclear. In this study, four AAs with different side chain groups were selected to explore the change of their samples and related disinfection by-products formation potential (DBPFPs) under MOM condition. The results showed that the final degradation rate of dissolved organic carbon and dissolved organic nitrogen of four AAs samples were 11.71%-59.87% and 26.50%-100.00% under MOM condition. Aspartic acid samples were the easiest to be degraded, whereas glycine samples were the opposite. While the total fluorescence intensity increased by 6.30%-113.40% for the appearance of tryptophan-like substance. The total DBPFPs of glutamic acid, arginine and aspartic acid samples were finally decreased by 4.73%, 8.00% and 98.88% (glycine sample increased by 2.30 times). Compared with the surface condition, the degradation of AAs samples and the change of DBPFPs were significantly inhibited under MOM condition. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays a significant role in the photochemical behavior of nano- and micro-plastic particles (NPs/MPs). We investigated the influence of DOM on the mechanism on the photoaging of NPs/MPs with different molecular structures under UV 365 irradiation in water. DOM components used in this study are mainly humic acid and fulvic acid. The results showed that DOM promoted the weathering of aliphatic NPs/MPs (polypropylene (PP)), but inhibited or had only a minor effect on the photoaging of aromatic NPs/MPs (polystyrene (PS) NPs/MPs, carboxyl-modified PS NPs, amino-modified PS NPs, and polycarbonate MPs). NPs with a large surface area may adsorb sufficient DOM on the particle surfaces through π-π interactions, which competes with NPs for photon absorption sites, thus, can delay the photoaging of PS NPs. Aromatic MPs may release phenolic compounds that quench •OH, thereby weakening the photoaging process. For aliphatic MPs, the detection of peracid, aldehyde, and ketone groups on the polymer surface indicated that DOM promoted weathering of PP MPs, which was primarily because the generation of •OH due to DOM photolysis may attack the polymer by C-C bond cleavage and hydrogen extraction reactions. Most of the reservoirs or lakes will form a metalimnetic oxygen minimum (MOM) with the characterization of a substantial fraction of dissolved oxygen (DO) depleted below the epilimnion. The effect of intracellular organic matter (IOM) of algal cells transformed under MOM conditions is completely different from that of the original IOM on water quality. In this study, the IOM changes of Microcystic aeruginosa under different MOM conditions and its related disinfection by-products formation potentials (DBPFPs) were investigated by changing the pressure and DO concentration of MOM. Total Fmax increased slightly and then decreased under different pressure conditions, finally decreasing by no more than 22.0%. Under aerobic condition, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and total Fmax decreased significantly, and decreased by 60.4% and 38.8% within the first 2 days. The results of specific UV absorbance (SUVA) and UV 250 /UV 365 indicated that aromatic compounds and average molecular weight of IOM were gradually increased under different MOM conditions. The total DBPFPs increased firstly and then decreased under different pressure conditions, and finally decreased by 26.2%-33.1%. The decrease of total DBPFPs was significantly higher under aerobic condition than that under anoxic condition, which finally decreased by 64.5%. Redundancy analysis showed that the fluorescence parameter (protein-like and humic-like fluorescence) could be expected as an index to predict the DBPFPs. Moreover, the results revealed that with the decrease of DO, the activity and diversity of natural microbial consortium decreased, which prevented the further degradation and utilization of organic matter by natural microbial consortium. In this paper, three monitoring sections were set up in Heilongtan Reservoir, and water samples were collected in 2019, 2020, and 2021 for the determination of physical and chemical properties such as permanganate index, chemical oxygen demand, and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5). The water quality was evaluated by the single factor pollution index method and the Nemerow pollution index method, and the temporal and spatial changes of water quality were analyzed.The single factor pollution index method determines the water quality category by identifying the single worst indicator of water quality, based on the classified water quality category. The Nemerow pollution index method emphasizes the most polluting factor while also taking into account the contribution of other factors in the assessment system, and determines the water quality category through the comprehensive pollution index. The results of the study indicate that the monitoring indicators of the monitoring sections have reached the Category III water quality standard and above in the "Surface Water Environmental Quality Standard" during the three years 2019 to 2021. The Heilongtan Reservoir's water quality in 2019, 2020, and 2021 is of Category I standard, according to the results of the evaluation of water quality using the single factor pollution index technique. According to the Nemerow pollution index method's results for evaluating water quality, the water quality pollution index for the three monitoring sections as a whole ranges from 0.36 to 0.51 in three years. The three monitoring sections' water quality-Dongfeng Canal, Longmiao, and Sixin Village-has not changed significantly during that time, remaining clean. The migration of oil spills in marine environment is still not clear, especially the key processes of submerging and floating, which is an important concern for effective disposal of oil spills. In mesoscale wave tank (32 m × 0.8 m × 2 m), this study has evaluated the characteristics of oil submergence based on oil concentration and oil droplet size. The concept of effective submergence is put forward for the first time, utilized to analyze the effects of dispersant on submerging stability and associated mechanisms. The results indicate dispersants increase submerged oil concentration and promote homogeneous distribution and vertical penetration. Of concern is that dispersants increase the proportion of small oil droplets (2.5-70 µm), prolonging the residence time of oil droplets in water by delaying the floating process. Dispersants sharply reduce oil droplets size (VMD<44 µm) thus decreasing the coalescence probability. These contribute to better submerging stability. By contrast, the submerged oil, formed as oil patches, oil streamers, and large oil droplets (VMD>170 µm) when without dispersant, will float and reattach to oil slicks more quickly due to their large volume. In this paper, three monitoring sections were set up in Lugu Lake, and water samples were collected in 2019, 2020, and 2021 for the determination of physical and chemical properties such as permanganate index, chemical oxygen demand, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD 5 ) and so on. By using the single factor pollution index method and the Nemerow pollution index method, the water quality of three monitoring sections and the whole Lugu Lake was assessed, and the temporal and spatial changes of water quality were analyzed. The findings demonstrate that Lugu Lake's overall water quality is excellent, and that it has not altered significantly in three years.The results of evaluating the water quality by the single factor pollution index method show that, in the past three years, the water quality of the three monitoring sections and the whole of Lugu Lake is Category I, which belongs to no pollution, and the measured indicators all meet the water quality standard of Category I. It can be seen from the evaluation results of the Nemerow index method that the water quality pollution index of Lugu Lake is between 0.22 and 0.34 in the past three years and the water quality evaluation of Changdao Bay, Lake center, Zhaojia Bay and the whole are Category I standards in 2019, 2020 and 2021. In terms of time changes, the water quality of Lugu Lake has remained stable between 2019 and 2021, and the water quality has been good. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation is considered as an important photoaging mechanism of microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs). To elucidate the ROS-induced MP/NP aging processes in water under UV 365 irradiation, we examined the effects of surface coatings, polymer types and grain sizes on ROS generation and photoaging intermediates. Bare polystyrene (PS) NPs generated hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ), while coated PS NPs (carboxyl-modified PS (PS-COOH), amino-modified PS (PS-NH 2 )) and PS MPs generated fewer ROS due to coating scavenging or size effects. Polypropylene, polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene terephthalate and polycarbonate MPs only generated •OH. For aromatic polymers, •OH addition preferentially occurred at benzene rings to form monohydroxy polymers. Excess •OH resulted in H abstraction, CC scission and phenyl ring opening to generate aliphatic ketones, esters, aldehydes, and aromatic ketones. For coated PS NPs, •OH preferentially attacked the surface coatings to result in decarboxylation and deamination reactions. For aliphatic polymers, •OH attack resulted in the formation of carbonyl groups from peracid, aldehyde or ketone via H abstraction and CC scission. Moreover, 1 O 2 might participate in phenyl ring opening for PS NPs and coating degradation for coated PS NPs. Concentrated leachate (CL), characterized with high content salts and compositional complexity of dissolved organic matter (DOM), is difficult to degrade. Understanding the CL from molecular insight level is the requirement for further disposal based on their components. Here, typical CL samples were collected from the multi-stage membrane separation process in a large-scale leachate plant, including nanofiltration (NF), primary ultrafiltration (PUF), secondary nanofiltration (SNF), and reverse osmosis (RO). More than 95% of DOM was removed from raw CL, of which about 3/4 flowed into PUFCL and 1/5 flowed into SNFCL. DOM with macro-molecular weight (>500 Da, 30.46%) and highly unsaturated compounds (double-bond equivalents >15) were detected in PUFCL. Nearly half of DOM was CHO-only compounds (42.04%) in SNFCL. PUFCL was abundant in heteroatom species with higher-order oxygen (O ≥ 10), which was coincident with the trend of humic substance distribution (humic substance >1/2). Based on these properties results, advanced oxidation processes, such as ozonation, might be the right process for SNFCL rich in heteroatom species with low-order oxygen (O < 10). Abundant disulfides (S 2 O 2-6 classes, 20.19%) and monovalent salts existed in ROCL, which should be removed from the system. Influent loading determines the performance of leachate treatment plant (LTP) facing the dynamic conditions, but enzyme expression in microbial community is unclear. Here, six nitrogen-metabolizing enzymes were detected during nitrification failures (NF), high loading (HL), low loading (LL), and low carbon/nitrogen (LCN) in a 500 m 3 /d LTP. Nitrogen removal in LL was 15 ± 5% higher than that in HL. The activity of hydroxylamine oxidoreductase decreased by 90% as the influent total nitrogen increased from 2450 mg/L to 3100 mg/L, which might be a critical enzyme causing the nitrification failure. Denitrifying enzyme abated by 1.3% as the carbon/nitrogen dropped by 1% in LCN. With the influent chemical oxygen demand decreased from 22000 mg/L to 12000 mg/L, the relative abundance of norank&#95;f&#95;Saprospiraceae dropped from 33.66% to 11.94%, and finally disappeared, which seems to be an indicator of the high load operation. Although widely used in permeation reaction barrier (PRB) for strengthening the removal of various heavy metals, zero-valent iron (ZVI) is limited by various inherent drawbacks, such as easy passivation and poor electron transfer. As a solution, a synergistic system with PRB and electrokinetics (PRB-EK) was established and applied for the efficient removal of Cr(VI)-contaminated groundwater. As the filling material of PRB, ZVI/Fe 3 O 4 /activated carbon (ZVI/Fe 3 O 4 /AC) composites were synthesized by ball milling and thermal treatment. A series of continuous flow column experiments and batch tests was conducted to evaluate the removal efficiency of Cr(VI). Results showed that the removal efficiency of Cr(VI) remained above 93% even when the bed volume (BV) reached 2000 under the operational parameters (iron/AC mass ratio, 2:1; current, 5 mA). The mechanism of Cr(VI) removal by the PRB-EK system was revealed through field emission scanning electron microscopy images, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fe 2+ concentration, and redox potential (E h ) values. The key in Cr(VI) reduction was the Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ cycle driven by the surface microelectrolysis of the composites. The application of an externally supplied weak direct current maintained the redox process by enhancing the electron transfer capability of the system, thereby prolonging the column lifetime. Cr(VI) chemical speciation was determined through sequential extraction, verifying the stability and safety of the system. To investigate the impact of ocean waves on transport of underwater spilled oil, a wave action module is developed and embedded into an underwater oil spill model. Combined with a validated hydrodynamic background data, the model is applied to a short-term numerical simulation of the 2011 Penglai 19-3 oil spill event in the Bohai Sea. Numerical result shows that the model result is rationally consistent with the field observation. In addition, waves can influence surface oil slick in both horizontal and vertical directions: in horizontal direction, Stokes drift tends to make oil slick spread more widely under the action of wind-waves; in vertical direction, breaking waves tend to entrain the surface oil into water column, and then affects the vertical distribution of spilled oil. Furthermore, sensitivity study shows that using different parameterizations of wave entrainment can make some difference to the model output, but the effect is limited. Besides, the impact of input wave errors varies on different model outputs. The water-sediment interface of lakes is an important and unique area of the water environment; the geochemical behavior of nutrients in this area has a significant impact on the quality of the water environment and ecosystems, especially in shallow lakes. However, most studies do not provide direct in situ evidence for this in shallow lakes in arid regions; in order to explore the coupling relationship between phosphorus (P) and iron (Fe) in a sediment profile, we conducted a high-resolution analysis of liable Fe and P in sediments taken from the Chaiwopu Lake using ZrO-Chelex thin film diffusion gradient technology (ZrO-Chelex DGT). The results show that (1) the vertical spatial distribution trend of the liable P and Fe in the sediments from each sampling site is essentially similar. The contents of the liable P and Fe ranged from 0.004-0.125 mg/L and 0.050-0.190 mg/L, respectively, and the synchronous distribution of the micro-interface concentration reflects the coupling relationship between them. (2) The correlation analysis of the liable P and Fe concentrations showed that there were significant linear correlations between them (P < 0.05, bilateral). (3) The diffusion fluxes of P and Fe were - 51.76~65.12 μg (m 2  d) -1 and - 451.27~457.06 μg (m 2  d) -1 , respectively, and were shown to be negative at the sediment-water interface for most of the samples, which showed that P and Fe were released from the overlying water into the sediments. (4) This research showed that the diffusive fluxes at the different sites are quite different, which indicates that the phosphorus and iron pollution in the sediments of the Chaiwopu Lake is affected by exogenous inputs. There was no significant correlation between P release flux and pH, ORP, conductivity (EC), the TDS of the overlying water, or the pH, salinity (Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ ), and nutrient (organic matter) content of the sediment. The release flux of Fe is affected by the pH of the sediment. The results of this study provide references for the research of elements in the water-sediment interface of shallow lakes in arid regions, as well as other areas.

Nitrate (NO 3 - ) dual isotope analysis was performed in Zhanjiang Bay, which is a closed bay with intensive human activities in South China, to investigate seasonal changes in the main NO 3 - sources and their biogeochemical processes in the monsoon-controlled climate. The relatively low N/P ratios in Zhanjiang Bay suggests that nitrogen (N) is a limiting nutrient, which indicates that the increase of N is favorable for phytoplankton proliferation. However, a sufficient amount of ammonium was found in our study area owing to intensive human activities, which can support biological processes. Thus, less NO 3 - biological processes were found, indicating that NO 3 - isotopic characteristics may reveal details of the mixing from various sources. The Bayesian mixing model showed that NO 3 - in the upper bay originated from manure (43%), soil N (30%), N fertilizer (17%), and N precipitation (10%) during winter, which reflects the local human activities; while NO 3 - sources during summer were mainly N fertilizer (36%), soil N (32%), and manure (31%), indicating the source as the runoff from the upper river basin. Our results suggest that nitrate dual-isotope was very useful for tracing the main NO 3 - sources in the condition of the sufficient ammonium, and runoff exerted an important impact on the shift in NO 3 - sources between both the local source and the source from the upper river basin during the two seasons in this monsoon-controlled bay.

An imidazolium-functionalized mesoporous cationic Cr-based metal-organic framework (MOF) with high densities of positive charges was synthesized for the first time via a mixed-solvent strategy. The cationic mesoporous Cr-based MOF showed excellent adsorption performances in the removal of dichromate Cr 2 O 7 2- from water with a large uptake of 321 mg g -1 and good regeneration ability.

Ocean acidification (OA) has been found to increase the release of free Cu 2+ in seawater. However, only a handful of studies have investigated the influence of OA on Cu accumulation and cellular toxicity in bivalve species. In this study, Pacific oysters, Crassostrea gigas, were exposed to 25 μg/L Cu 2+ at three pH levels (8.1, 7.8 and 7.6) for 14 and 28 days. Physiological and histopathological parameters [(clearance rate (CR), respiration rate (RR), histopathological damage and condition index (CI)), oxidative stress and neurotoxicity biomarkers [superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione transferase (GST) activities, lipid peroxidation (LPO) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity], combined with glycolytic enzyme activities [pyruvate kinase (PK) and hexokinase (HK)] were investigated in C. gigas. The bioconcentration of Cu was increased in soft tissues of Cu-exposed oysters under OA. Our results suggest that both OA and Cu could lead to physiological disturbance, oxidative stress, cellular damage, disturbance in energy metabolism and neurotoxicity in oysters. The inhibited CR, increased glycolytic enzymes activities and decreased CI suggested that the energy metabolism strategy adopted by oysters was not sustainable in the long term. Furthermore, integrated biomarker response (IBR) results found that OA and Cu exposure lead to severe stress to oysters, and co-exposure was the most stressful condition. Microplastics are an emerging concern in the marine environment due to their small size; they can be ingested by aquatic organisms, especially filter-feeding organisms, such as oysters. The presence of microplastics in seafood may pose a threat to food safety, and there is an urgent need to evaluate the potential risks of microplastics to human health. This study quantified the microplastics in oysters from 17 sites along the coastline of China. Qualitative attributes, such as shape and size, were also determined under a microscope. Additionally, the polymer types were identified using Fourier-Transform Infrared Micro-Spectroscopy (μ-FT-IR). The results showed that the average abundance of microplastics in oyster was 0.62 items/g (wet weight) or 2.93 items/individual. Additionally, 84% of the sampled oysters had inhaled microplastics, indicating the high prevalence of microplastic pollution in different coastal areas of China. Fibers were the most common shape (60.67%), and the most common size was <1500 μm, accounting for 81.89% of the total microplastics. The μ-FT-IR analysis identified eight different polymers, and the main polymeric types of microplastics were cellophane (CP), polyethylene (PE) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Our results suggest the widespread prevalence of microplastics in cultured oysters from different coastal areas of China with similar or lower abundances than other countries. In addition, our results exhibited regional characteristics of high microplastics abundance in southern coastal area of China and low microplastics abundance in northern China. Mounting evidence has demonstrated the combined effects of ocean acidification (OA) and other environmental stressors on marine organisms. Although metal pollution is widely distributed in coasts and estuaries, the combined effects of OA and metal pollution have received little attention until recent years. In this study, the accumulation and subcellular distribution of cadmium (Cd) and the physiological responses of the oyster Crassostrea gigas were investigated after 31 days of exposure to OA and Cd, either alone or in combination. Increased Cd accumulation was found both in gills (about 57% increase at pH 7.8, 22% increase at pH 7.6) and digestive glands (about 38% increase at pH 7.8, 22% increase at pH 7.6) of C. gigas under elevated pCO 2 exposure. Although a similar total Cd accumulation pattern was seen in oyster gills and digestive glands, a higher partition of Cd in the BIM (biologically inactive metal) fractions of gills (about 60%) was found in Cd-exposed treatments compared to the digestive glands (about 45%), which might correspond to the generally lower toxicity in gills. Moreover, synergetic effects of Cd and OA on the oxidative stresses, histopathological damage, and apoptosis of exposed oysters were observed in this study, which might be explained by significant interactions of these two factors on increased generation of ROS. These findings demonstrated that OA could aggravate the toxicity of metals in marine organisms, with significant implications for coastal benthic ecosystems regarding the widespread metal contamination and the concurrent increase of acidified seawater., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier B.V. Seawater acidification (OA) and cadmium (Cd) has the potential to lead to immunosuppression effect on marine bivalves. However, the interaction between these two environmental stressors on immune system of marine bivalves has received limited attention. In order to evaluate the defense responses of oysters under the combined exposure to OA and cadmium, the oysters Crassostrea gigas were exposed to 10 μg/L Cd at three pH levels (8.1, 7.8 and 7.6) for 31 days. Results showed that OA exposure alone led to increased DNA damage, apoptosis rate and ROS production of hemocytes. However, inhibited phagocytosis rate, combined with increased DNA damage, apoptosis rate and ROS production of hemocytes were observed in oysters under exposure to Cd exposure alone or combined with OA. Significant interactive effects between OA and Cd were observed on ROS production and DNA damage of hemocytes. In addition, there is generally significant increase in the mRNA expression of genes related to immune-related TLR pathway and two immune factors (TNF and integrin beta-1B) in Cd-exposed oysters at pH 7.6. The results revealed that even though the mRNA expression of genes related to immune responses (TLR pathway and immune factors) was stimulated to counteract the immunosuppression caused by acidified seawater and Cd, depressed hemocyte function perhaps sensitized oysters to potential pathogen infection., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are ubiquitous and coexisted in the aquatic environment. Individual and combined toxic effects of benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) and 2,2',4,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47) on embryogenesis, and larval survival of the Pacific oyster were investigated. The EC 50 values of BaP, BDE-47 and their mixture on embryogenesis were 18.4, 203.3 and 72.0 µg/L respectively, while the LC 50 values for 96 h larval mortality were 26.8, 244.5 and 108.9 µg/L respectively. The Marking-Dawson additive toxicity indices were -0.02 and -0.19, indicating an additive effect with a trend to antagonism. In addition, DNA strand breaks were also observed in oyster embryos after exposure. Our study suggests that BaP and BDE-47 exposure can cause developmental abnormalities, DNA damage and larval mortality. Furthermore, the toxicity of the mixture is slightly lower than individual pollutant. These data will be helpful to predict the toxicity of organic pollutants, and provide criteria for marine water quality standards.

An integrative biomarker approach was employed to evaluate the environmental quality of the north coast of Shandong Peninsula along the southern Bohai Sea of China, where pollution is an imminent threat due to rapid urbanization and industrialization. A battery of biomarkers and the metal bioaccumulation in tissues of native oyster Crassostrea gigas were measured under field conditions. Integrative biomarker index (IBR) and metal body burden were calculated to differentiate the pollution status of seven sampling sites. According to our results, Xinzhuang (XZ) site was the most severely contaminated, with the highest IBR value of 3.58, while the lowest IBR value (0.04) was obtained at Penglai (PL). Hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) and tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) are two kinds of brominated flame retardants and widely present in the environment and biota. The levels, spatial distributions and mass inventories of HBCD and TBBPA were investigated in sediments and paddy soils from the Liaohe River Basin in northeast China. The concentrations of ΣHBCD and TBBPA were in the range of not detected (nd) to 4.02ng/g dry weight (dw) and 0.03 to 4.06ng/g dw, respectively. γ-HBCD was dominated in sediments, while the abundance of α-HBCD was relatively high in paddy soils. The spatial distributions of HBCD and TBBPA in surface sediments and paddy soils indicated that the local point-input was their major source. The significant correlation between total organic carbon (TOC) contents and the HBCD levels suggested that TOC content also exerted an influence on the distribution of HBCD in sediments. Meanwhile, it was found that the irrigation with river water was not the major transportation pathway of HBCD and TBBPA in paddy soils. Based on the study, it was estimated that there were about 1.67tons HBCD and 2.20tons TBBPA deposited into sediments of the Liaohe River system every year. Ocean acidification (OA), caused by anthropogenic CO2emissions, has been proposed as one of the greatest threats in marine ecosystems. A growing body of evidence shows that ocean acidification can impact development, survival, growth and physiology of marine calcifiers. In this study, the immune responses of the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas were investigated after elevated pCO2 exposure for 28 days. The results demonstrated that OA caused an increase of apoptosis and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in hemocytes. Moreover, elevated pCO2 had an inhibitory effect on some antioxidant enzyme activities and decreased the GSH level in digestive gland. However, the mRNA expression pattern of several immune related genes varied depending on the exposure time and tissues. After exposure to pCO2 at ∼2000 ppm for 28 days, the mRNA expressions of almost all tested genes were significantly suppressed in gills and stimulated in hemocytes. Above all, our study demonstrated that elevated pCO2 have a significant impact on the immune systems of the Pacific oyster, which may constitute as a potential threat to increased susceptibility of bivalves to diseases., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Multilayer films (PW(12)-TH)(n) (PW(12)=PW(12)O(40)(3-), TH=thionine) were immobilized on porous anatase TiO(2) microspheres by layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly method. The porous structure of TiO(2) was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that TiO(2) template particles had a round shape with an average diameter of 250 nm. The composite films were characterized by FTIR spectroscopy, UV diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and XRD spectroscopy. The results confirmed the successful immobilization of (PW(12)-TH)(n) composite films onto TiO(2) microspheres, and the growth of PW(12)-TH layer pair was uniform. SEM and TEM were also used to characterize the morphology. When PW(12)-TH composite films were assembled on the template, the surface became rougher with the increasing number of layer pair. The lattice fringe of TiO(2) became weaker when immobilized (PW(12)-TH)(n). The photocatalytic properties of the microspheres toward a rhodamine B (RhB) solution were investigated under visible light irradiation. The combination of TiO(2) and PW(12) showed an excellent photocatalytic performance. Both TH sensitization and PW(12) adsorption played important roles during the process of photocatalysis. Moreover, the catalytic property and reusability of as-prepared catalyst were relevant to the number of PW(12)-TH bilayer.
