Coastal marine ecosystems, such as coral reefs, are severely threatened by climate changes, overexploitation, and marine pollution. Particularly, environmental pollution caused by petroleum-derived substances is poorly studied in coral reefs in tropical developing countries, with a total absence of data about these contaminants in some regions. In this work, we determined the levels of conventional and unconventional PAHs in the tissue and skeleton of the coral Montastraea cavernosa in a seascape scale of the Southwest Atlantic. We sampled in 12 coral reefs adjacent to the coast along approximately 200 km. We found 14 PAHs, 2 Oxy-PAHs, and 15 Nitro-PAHs in the samples, and among them, benzo[a]pyrene, chrysene, benzo[a]anthracene, benzo[k]fluoranthene, indeno[1,2,3-c,d]pyrene and dibenz[a,h]anthracene, which are mutagenic, teratogenic and carcinogenic substances. Skeletons presented predominantly lower quantities of ∑PAHs than the respective tissue, except for the skeletons from one reef severely impacted by oil spills. The ∑PAHs levels were lower in a bay near an urbanized region than in open sea reefs. Diagnostic ratios indicate mixogenic sources, with the predominance of petrogenic origin. Metals and metalloids are persistent environmental pollutants with the potential for bioaccumulation, posing significant health risks, including genotoxicity. These contaminants are prevalent in industrial and agricultural runoff. This study utilizes Trachemys dorbigni, an aquatic reptile, as a bioindicator to assess environmental contamination by metals and metalloids in both rural and urban settings in Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. We captured specimens using pit-type traps with barriers (fyke nets), dividing them into two groups: 15 from a rural area and 15 from an urban area. Each animal underwent physical evaluations, and biometric data (weight, total carapace length and width) were recorded to calculate body condition indices. Biological samples were collected via manual restraint, with blood samples drawn from the supraoccipital venous sinus and linear carapace fragments obtained through manual scraping. Water samples from each location were also analyzed. Using atomic absorption spectrophotometry, concentrations of Al, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn were measured in the water, carapace fragments, and blood samples. Cellular damage was assessed through flow cytometry and microscopy, examining erythrocyte disruption, reactive oxygen species, membrane fluidity, DNA fragmentation and micronucleus formation. Urban area samples showed concentrations of As, Cd, Cu, Fe, Hg and Ni exceeding national standards set by the Conselho Nacional do Meio Ambiente (CONAMA), with rural areas also showing elevated levels of As, Cd, Hg and Ni. Biometric analysis revealed that rural reptiles had significantly higher weight and carapace dimensions, whereas urban tortoises displayed a higher body condition index and significantly elevated blood levels of Al, Cr, Ni, Pb and Zn. The urban tortoises also exhibited higher concentrations of all tested metal(loid) in carapace samples (p < 0.05) and more pronounced cellular damage (p < 0.05), highlighting severe bioaccumulation and associated deleterious effects. Elevated reactive oxygen species levels were noted in rural specimens. In the pursuit of advancing sustainable wastewater treatment solutions in the industry, this study investigates the effect of chemical and thermal modifications on adsorbent geopolymer (GP) structure. Optimal conditions of sulfuric acid treatment and calcination temperature were determined to enhance the adsorption of the direct red dye 28 (DR28). Functional groups (FTIR), mineralogical composition (DRX), morphology (SEM-EDS), and physical properties (BET/BJH) were employed to study the effect of attack with H 2 SO 4 and calcination on GP characteristics. The modified GP exhibited a high specific area (190 m 2  g -1 ). Adsorption tests indicated that the Elovich model satisfactorily describes the kinetics, while the Sips model represents the isotherms. The maximum adsorption capacity achieved was 107.5 mg g -1 . Remarkably, the adsorption capacity was doubled with GP regeneration, allowing reuse for three cycles. Furthermore, the selectivity profile uncovers a pronounced affinity hierarchy for dyes, with direct dyes manifesting a superior attraction, followed by acid, reactive, and disperse dye categories. Analyzing the efficiency of GPAT and comparing it with other GPs, it is evident that GPAT is an efficient and versatile adsorbent, featuring a simplified production process and requiring milder temperatures than those needed for activated carbon. Mercury, a toxic metal released by various human activities, exerts environmental stress through its bioaccumulation and biomagnification, particularly in marine habitats. South American fur seals (Arctocephalus australis) and sea lions (Otaria flavescens) reproduce on the Atlantic coast of Uruguay. As top predators, they can accumulate toxic levels of mercury and are often used as sentinel species for monitoring ecosystem health. Fur seals prey on pelagic species, such as fish and squid, while sea lions consume coastal-benthic prey. We analyzed the total mercury concentration (THg) in hair and the trophic habits (δ 13 C and δ 15 N) of females from both species. The average THg concentration in adult female sea lions (30.5 ± 9.3 μg/g dry weight) was significantly higher than in fur seals (6.3 ± 2.5 μg/g dry weight). Additionally, the mean δ 15 N and δ 13 C values were significantly higher in sea lion (δ 15 N: 19.2 ± 0.6‰, δ 13 C: -13.8 ± 0.2‰) compared to fur seals (δ 15 N: 16.5 ± 0.5‰, δ 13 C: -15.5 ± 0.6‰). Our results suggest that different trophic levels and feedings areas affect the THg concentration in Uruguayan Otariids. Notably, at the intraspecific level, the THg concentration in sea lions increased with δ 13 C values, suggesting a link to coastal feeding habits. This indicates that coastal feeding behaviors, compared to feeding in pelagic environments, enhance mercury bioaccumulation in Otariids along the Uruguayan coast, with the discharge of freshwater from the Río de la Plata (one of the largest estuaries in South America) basin identified as a potential mercury source. THg concentrations found in female sea lion hair are the highest reported in Otariids globally. Mercury levels exceeded toxic thresholds observed in other mammals and could pose significant health risks. Our findings may explain why sea lions were particularly affected by the avian influenza outbreak in Uruguay compared to fur seals. Facial masks are a source of plastic microfibres (PMFs) in the aquatic environment, an emerging risk factor for aquatic organisms. However, little is known concerning its impact during the early developmental stages of fish. Thus, the current study aimed to evaluate the potential interaction and developmental toxicity of PMFs derived from leachate of surgical masks (SC-Msk) and N-95 facial masks (N95-Msk) using a multi-biomarker approach in developing zebrafish (Danio rerio). PMFs from both facial masks were obtained and characterized by multiple techniques. Zebrafish embryos were exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations of PMFs from both facial masks (1000, 10,000, and 100,000 particle L -1 ), and the toxicity was analysed in terms of mortality, hatching rate, neurotoxicity, cardiotoxicity, morphological changes, reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, cell viability, and behavioural impairments. The results showed that both facial masks can release PMFs, but the N95-Msk produced a higher concentration of PMFs than SC-Msk. Both PMFs can interact with zebrafish chorion and don't cause effects on embryo mortality and hatching; however, zebrafish embryos showed cardiotoxic effects, and larvae showed increased agitation, average speed, and distance travelled, indicating the behavioural impairments induced by PMFs derived from facial masks. Chlorine is a common disinfectant used in water treatment. However, its reaction with organic matter can lead to the formation of harmful byproducts, such as trihalomethanes (THMs), which are potentially carcinogenic. To address this issue, the aim of this work was to enhance a colorimetric method capable of quantifying THMs in drinking water through UV/Vis Spectrophotometry, using cost-effective equipment, and validate this methodology for the first time according to established validation protocols. The method's innovation involved replacing the solvent pentane with the more common hexane, along with adjusting the heating ramp, elucidating the mechanisms involved in the process. This method involves the reaction between THMs, pyridine, and NaOH to produce a colored compound, which is then monitored through molecular absorption spectroscopy in the visible region. The method was thoroughly validated, achieving a limit of detection of 13.41 μg L -1 and a limit of quantification of 40.65 μg L -1 . Recovery assays ranged from 86.1 % to 90.7 %, demonstrating high accuracy. The quality of the linear fit for the analytical curve exceeded R 2  > 0.98. The method was applied to real samples, revealing concentrations ranging from 13.58 to 55.46 μg L -1 , all way below the legal limit in Brazil (Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCL) = 100 μg L -1 ). The Water Quality Surveillance Information System for Human Consumption (SISÁGUA) is designed to manage the risks of water contamination for human consumption. This short communication focuses on data from the 2022 Report regarding pesticide analysis. The data centers on 27 active pesticide ingredients found in drinking water samples exceeding the maximum residual limits (MRLs) established by Brazilian legislation. Results indicate that 1609 municipalities (60 %) found at least one pesticide in their water. Two hundred ten municipalities detected all 27 pesticides tested, with 11 of these pesticides reported to have some carcinogenic potential. Nearly one and a half million people were exposed to levels above the Brazilian MRL, with the sum of maximum detected residues exceeding 80,000 ppb. Additionally, the report highlights that 53 % of Brazilian municipalities did not submit water monitoring data for human consumption. Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are halogenated contaminants found globally. Cetaceans are impacted by these pollutants, and nowadays, it is essential to understand their presence to mitigate their impacts. This study aimed to establish baseline levels of POPs in the blubber of Commerson's dolphins (Cephalorhynchus commersonii) within the Subantarctic ecosystem. A wide range of POPs concentrations were measured among individuals: ΣPCBs from 289.5 to 15264 ng g -1 lw and ΣDDTs from 540.4 to 17657 ng g -1 lw. Levels of HCB and mirex ranged from 48 to 1703.7 ng g -1 lw and 5.1-1917.4 ng g -1 lw, respectively. The predominant POPs were mid-to high molecular weight PCBs (hexa-PCBs), consistent with other findings in cetaceans of the southern hemisphere. The mean ratio of ΣDDT/ΣPCB was 0.44, with p,p'-DDE/ΣDDT at 0.56, indicating p,p'-DDE as the dominant DDT isomer. Furthermore, differences in POP concentrations were observed based on sexual maturity, with mature males exhibiting higher levels of ƩPCBs, HCB, ƩDDT, and mirex. Age and total body length of animals were strongly correlated with POP concentrations. Sperm quality is defined as the sperm cell ability to successfully fertilize eggs and allow normal embryo development⁠. Few studies explore sperm quality using aquatic invertebrates. Parhyale hawaiensis is a marine amphipod with a circumtropical distribution and considered a model for evolution, development, and ecotoxicological studies. We aimed to develop a methodology to collect sperm cells of P. hawaiensis and evaluate their viability and DNA damage (comet assay). We directly exposed the sperm cells to different mutagenic agents to optimize/develop the protocols. Then, as a proof of concept, we exposed the males to mutagenic compounds (EMS, benzo[a]pyrene (BaP), azo and anthraquinone dyes) at non-lethal concentrations verified by the proposed viability test and analyzed their sperm cells for DNA damage (comet assay). Organisms exposed to EMS presented a clear concentration response in the DNA damage response. We also showed that BaP was able to induce a statistically significant increase in DNA damage of the sperm cells. For the two dyes, although DNA damage increased, statistically differences were not observed. We believe we successfully developed a test to detect genotoxicity of chemicals in sperm cells using an invertebrate model. The protocol for sperm cell viability needs to be further explored with different chemicals to verify its utility as a toxicity endpoint. The developed genotoxicity test has the advantages to employ organisms that are easily cultivated in reduced space, use simple laboratory resources and reduced amount of material and reagents. This study aimed to evaluate the combined treatment system of domestic sewage and leachate by serial stabilization ponds in a Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP). The WWTP had two parallel pond modules, one receiving (module II-pond M10) and the other not receiving leachate (module I-pond M5). Physical, chemical, and biological monitoring parameters collected from January 2017 to December 2021 were evaluated. High reducing efficiency for ammonium nitrogen was found, with an average of 95.7 ± 2.5%. BOD5 and COD can be considered statistically different for a 95% confidence level in the two pond modules. The phytoplankton community was composed of 46 taxa distributed in four taxonomic classes: 6 belonging to the Cyanobacteria group (13%), 22 to the Green Algae group (48%), 4 to the Diatoms group (9%), and 14 to the Phytoflagellate group (30%). No ecotoxicity was detected for the evaluated pond effluent samples. Thus, although the insertion of leachate impacted the quality of the final effluent of the ponds and the organic matter, it may not have affected the effluents' ecotoxicity. This research helps to understand the impacts of long-term leachate insertion in a real treatment system using stabilization ponds for combined treatment. Heavy metals (HMs) are ubiquitous in terrestrial and aquatic environments due to unplanned industrial waste discharge, the release of untreated wastewater, and improper mining activities. In particular, the concentrations of HMs are found to be higher in aquatic environments. As a result, the aquatic biota was heavily affected by HM contamination. This critical review aims to understand the sources and toxicity of HMs in commercial fish species, explore their ecological exchange, and examine the related human health challenges in Bangladesh. A modified PRISMA review technique is used in this paper to analyze the current status and research limitations of HM studies in Bangladesh fish species and their toxicity within aquatic food webs. Briefly, we searched several keywords to explore the research trend of HM concentrations and toxicity in fish species. Furthermore, potential toxicity and risk assessment of HMs through the aquatic food chain in Bangladesh were explored. On the other hand, a cross-tabulation approach was used to process the toxicity findings of HMs. Previous studies indicate that fish species can possess comparatively higher HMs than river water due to ecological exchange factors, including bioaccumulation and biotransformation. This review paper focuses on the joint toxicity and interaction of carbon-based nanomaterials (CNMs) with co-existing pollutants in aquatic environments. It explores the potential harmful effects of chemical mixtures with CNMs on aquatic organisms, emphasizing the importance of scientific modeling to predict mixed toxic effects. The study involved a systematic literature review to gather information on the joint toxicity and interaction between CNMs and various co-contaminants in aquatic settings. A total of 53 publications were chosen and analyzed, categorizing the studies based on the tested CNMs, types of co-contaminants, and the used species. Common test models included fish and microalgae, with zebrafish being the most studied species. The review underscores the necessity of conducting mixture toxicity testing to assess whether the combined effects of CNMs and co-existing pollutants are additive, synergistic, or antagonistic. The development of in silico models based on the solid foundation of research data represents the best opportunity for joint toxicity prediction, eliminating the need for a great quantity of experimental studies.

Microplastics (MPs) are ubiquitously found in environmental matrices, particularly affecting aquatic systems. While several marine species have been widely used to assess MP contamination, sponges (Porifera) are less used. The MPs contamination was assessed in the sun sponge (Hymeniacidon heliophila) along a gradient at the Santos Estuarine System (Brazil). A 14-fold difference between concentrations (particles g -1 ) was verified between the most (1.40 ± 0.81) and least (0.10 ± 0.12) contaminated sites, confirming the local contamination gradient. The MPs found were primarily polypropylene, small (1.2-1000 μm), fibrous, and colored. Considering total concentrations, sizes and shapes these spatial patterns were similar those previously detected in molluscs obtained in the same sites. On the other hand, they differed in polymeric composition and color categories. Polypropylene microplastics (PPMPs) are one of the major emerging contaminants in the ecosystem due to their frequent usage and improper disposal practices. These PPMPs enter ecosystems via wastewater effluent plants and cause severe environmental health issues. In addition, quantifying PPMPs smaller than 50 μm in wastewater plant extraction is very difficult. Thus, the current study was designed to mitigate the PPMPs using zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) as a photocatalyst under sunlight. The photocatalytic reaction was examined using spectroscopic techniques and microscopic imaging. The findings indicated that the weight loss percentage of PPMPs increased, and a decrease in UV-Vis DRS peak intensities was observed. The spectroscopic results elucidated the formation of free radicals, which affect the PPMPs and lead to the formation of carbonyl, allylic, and unsaturated groups. Further, EDS reports clarified that there is increased oxygen content due to the photooxidation process and the disintegration of the polymer chain owing to decreased carbon levels. Overall, ZnO photocatalyst absorbs photons from the visible spectrum of sunlight and forms free radicals, which affect the PPMPs to initiate polymer deterioration. Cocaine and its primary metabolite, benzoylecgonine, have been recently detected in sharks, indicating a growing concern over marine drug pollution. The presence of this drug in marine fauna poses risks such as physiological stress, impaired growth, reproduction, and altered behaviors, potentially leading to biodiversity loss and disrupted ecological interactions. Biomagnification may further affect higher trophic levels, including humans. Addressing this issue requires continuous monitoring, studies on physiological effects, understanding contamination routes, and improving wastewater treatment. Among the various types of plastics present in the marine environment, pellets stand out due to their wide dispersion. This study aims to assess the trajectory of plastic pellets reaching Santa Catarina Island (southern Brazil) from nearby port regions, and to investigate their distribution and fate. Using a Lagrangian particle tracking model and outputs from a hydrodynamic model, we evaluated particle transport and sources. The results indicate a predominant southward flow from Itajaí harbor, suggesting this port region as the most likely source of microplastics. From this source, particles reach the island in only 2 days, with their pathways following seasonal oceanographic conditions in the region. This study assessed the occurrence and ecological potential risk of nine selected pharmaceuticals in water samples from the Juquehy River. The river flows continuously to Juquehy Beach, known as "the jewel of the north coast" of São Paulo, Brazil. Samples were collected during Christmas and the New Year (period of December 2023-January 2024), in addition to a previous baseline weekend, to compare the loads during "celebratory parties" versus "normal operational conditions." The findings indicated that the "mass gathering" during Christmas and New Year holidays contributed significantly to an increase of the mass load of the nine pharmaceuticals flowing along to the Juquehy River, i.e., caffeine (14.40-633.00 ng/L) > losartan ( furosemide (< LOQ to 9.16 ng/L) > diclofenac (0.61-4.55 ng/L) > carbamazepine (< LOQ to 0.73 ng/L) > orphenadrine (< LOQ to 0.11 ng/L) showed higher concentrations during the New Year holiday. Conversely, atenolol (< LOQ to 13.10 ng/L) > benzoylecgonine (0.33-7.23 ng/L) > cocaine (0.12-6.59 ng/L) showed higher concentrations during the Christmas day. The individual ecological risk assessment in the Juquehy River revealed a clear environmental concern for the aquatic ecosystem. The threat to the aquatic biota is significant, with caffeine and losartan presenting a moderate level of risk. Sunken oil mats (SOMs) pose a significant threat to marine ecosystems, yet their long-term fate and weathering processes remain poorly understood. This study investigates the degradation of biomarkers in a SOM sample collected from the Brazilian coast following the long-lasting 2019 oil spill. The SOM clearly distinguished from spilt oil and were attributed to tanker-washing residues. Analysis of its sections revealed a consistent depletion pattern, associated with losses of volatile and photooxidation-sensitive compounds, even in the most preserved inner fractions, this suggests weathering of the oil prior SOM formation. While biodegradation was minor, photooxidation revealed a significant weathering factor, especially for aromatic compounds as indicated by preferential degradation of highly-alkylated tricyclic aromatic sulfur heterocycles, and specific methylpyrenes and benzofluorenes. Microplastics (MP) are omnipresent in aquaculture and can induce several toxic effects, mainly oxidative stress. Therefore, alternatives to minimize these effects are welcome. In this study, chitosan (1 and 3 g/kg) was supplemented through the feed of farmed shrimp P. vannamei for 30 days. After this period, the shrimp were exposed to MP (0.5 mg/L) for 7 days. The results showed the presence of MP in hepatopancreas, gills and muscle. The crude oil contamination along the Brazilian Northeast coast significantly impacted reef ecosystems. This study assessed polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in seawater, fluorescence of bile PAHs, and biochemical biomarkers in damselfish Stegastes fuscus across four coral reef areas pre- and post-oil contamination. Serrambi (SE) and Japaratinga (JP1) were identified as suitable reference areas. PAH concentrations significantly increased in water post-contamination, predominantly 2 to 3 ring parent and alkylated PAHs. Biliary PAHs naphthalene, phenanthrene, chrysene, pyrene and benzo(a)pyrene increased on Paiva post-spill versus pre-spill to 173 %, 449 %, 334 %, 331 % and 131 %, respectively. Significant increases in ethoxy-resorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) (852 %), catalase (CAT) (139 %) and decrease in lipid peroxidation (LPO) (40 %) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) (75 %) were verified in Paiva samples. Biliary PAHs and biochemical biomarkers were altered in S. fuscus after exposure to PAHs dissolved from the oil. New evidence regarding the risks that microplastics (MP) ingestion pose to human and wildlife health are being revealed with progress made in ecotoxicological research. However, comprehensive and realistic approaches that evaluate multiple physiological responses simultaneously are still scarce despite their relevance to understand whole-organism effects. To address this information gap, we performed an experiment to assess the effects of MP on freshwater fish physiology from the molecular to the organismal level. Using a model species of global commercial importance (Cyprinus carpio) and MP type (recycling industry fragments), size (range between 125-1000 µm), and two concentrations of environmental relevance (0.75 and 8.25 µg/L). Experimental design included 5 blocks containing 3 treatment levels each one: control, low, and high MP concentration, with 6 fish each aquarium (5 blocks x 3 treatments x 6 fish per aquarium = 90 fish). Our results suggest that, under the experimental conditions applied, MP exposure did not cause adverse effects at the morphological (variation in size of gut), metabolic (variation of standard metabolic rate), or ecological (growth performance) levels. Nonetheless, we observed an increased frequency of micronucleated cells with increasing MP concentration (df = 42, t-value = 3.68, p-value < 0.001), showing the potential genotoxicity of MP, which can clearly harm fish health in long-term. Thus, despite being a highly resistant species, exposure to MP may generate negative effects in juvenile C. carpio at cellular or subcellular levels. In recent decades the Amazonian ecosystem has received large amounts of domestic and industrial effluents, as well as mining-related waste contributing significant quantities of metal to water bodies. Thus, the main objective of the study was to verify the sensitivity of a native Amazonian ostracod (Strandesia rondoniensis) species to isolated and mixed metal salts (CuSO 4 ; ZnCl 2 ; CdCl 2 and HgCl 2 ). The sensitivity will be compared to other species using species sensitivity distributions (SSDs) for an ecological risk assessment (ERA). The experiment consisted of simultaneously exposing each metal alone and in mixture, through a factorial design for toxicity with 25 different combinations for 48 h. For the ERA, metal concentrations measured in the water of various aquatic environments in the Amazon basin were considered based on the risk quotient values. The results showed that the metal toxicity gradient was Cd>Hg>Cu>Zn, respectively. The toxicity in the mixture showed that the combination of Cu-Cd and Cu-Zn better fit the model (CA), indicating mainly synergism when copper predominated in the mixture. Meanwhile, the Cu-Hg interaction fit the model better (IA), again indicating synergism when copper was at a higher concentration. Purification methods such as membrane technology and adsorption have been studied for the purification of textile effluents. This article aimed to evaluate the membrane separation process and adsorption on pine nut shell, separately and sequentially, for reactive dye blue 5G removal from a synthetic effluent. The membrane separation process was carried out in a front filtration module using polymeric membranes. The maximum dye retention was 35.9% using a regenerated cellulose membrane, with agitation and a pressure of 0.5 bar. The permeate flux was fully restored after cleaning the membrane. In the adsorption using pine nut shell, the best results were at pH 2, 50°C, and 50 ppm, with 85% dye removal. The Freundlich isotherm showed the best fit to the data, as did the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The thermodynamic parameters indicated that the adsorption is of the physical type, with the process being endothermic and spontaneous. In the combined process, the permeate from the membrane separation process was subjected to adsorption on pine nut shell, achieving a removal rate of 98.7 for the initial concentration of 50 ppm. Therefore, this work shows the potential of pine nut shell as an adsorbent, not only to purify textile effluents but also to add value to a waste product, indicating that the combination of membrane technology and adsorption on pine nut shell could be an alternative for the treatment of textile effluents containing the reactive dye 5G blue.

The potential negative impacts of Technology-Critical Elements (TCEs) on the environment and wildlife, despite increasingly recognized, remain largely overlooked. In this sense, this study aimed to investigate the concentrations of several TCEs, including rubidium (Rb), titanium (Ti) and various Rare Earth Elements (REEs), in different tissues of tiger sharks. Sharks incidentally caught by artisanal fleets in southern Brazil were opportunistically sampled and liver, gills, kidneys, heart, muscle, eyes, brain, skin, and teeth were analyzed by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS). Significant Rb concentration variations were observed across different tissues, with higher levels detected in kidneys and lower levels in the liver. Titanium concentrations also exhibited significant differences, with higher levels detected in teeth and lower levels in liver. Although no statistical differences were observed for the analyzed REEs, a trend of higher accumulation in the liver, gills, and skin was noted. Light Rare Earth Elements (LREEs) were found predominantly in all organs, with neodymium, lanthanum, and cerium as the most significant REEs detected. Several statistically significant correlations were identified between Rb and REEs, as well as between Ti and REEs, indicating systemic transport of these elements across different tissues. These findings indicate that the growing extraction and disposal of metallic elements, driven by technological advancements, may lead to their assimilation by marine fauna, particularly at higher trophic levels. The potential harmful effects on these organisms remain unknown and require urgent investigation. Ciprofloxacin hydrochloride (CIP) is a broad-spectrum synthetic antibiotic often found in domestic sewage and industrial waste due to the inefficiency of conventional treatments. Given the potential risk of drug accumulation, this study presents coatings of titanium dioxide nanotubes (TiO 2 ) doped with different bismuth (Bi) concentrations to degrade CIP through photocatalytic and photoelectrochemical processes. Characterization studies revealed that bismuth (Bi) doping affected the morphology of the materials, with concentrations of 0.01 and 0.05 mol L -1 , resulting in collapsed materials with a smaller active surface area. Photocatalysis tests for all the materials exhibited a similar degree of efficiency to photolysis, approximately 33%. Ecotoxicity tests using the biomarkers Lactuca sativa L ., Lemna minor , and Artemia salina indicated that, although they were similar to photolysis in terms of efficiency, the effluents generated when employing the doped catalysts showed lower levels of toxicity, with the best results achieved for the material doped with 0.005 mol L -1 of Bi, with a toxicity level approximately 40% lower. Photoelectrocatalysis proved to be the most efficient CIP degradation technique. The highest degradation rate was observed for materials doped with 0.005 mol L -1 of Bi, with an efficiency of 46%, which is 1.4 times more efficient than photolysis. These results demonstrate that materials doped with low amounts of Bi can be effectively used as photoanodes for drug degradation, as their performance is superior, and the final product generated exhibits low toxicity to living organisms.

Microplastics (MPs) and glyphosate-based herbicides (GBH) are among the most common contaminants in aquatic environments. In Brazilian rivers, both contaminants were found in elevated levels, leading to a high probability of their association, which can alter their individual effects and potentially intensify their toxicity. This study evaluated the isolated and combined effects of polyethylene microplastics (PE-MPs) and GBH on Oreochromis niloticus using multi-biomarkers of toxicity. The fish were subjected to a 96-h exposure period, with concentrations set based either isolated, PE-MPs group (5 mg L -1 ), GBH group (5 mg L -1 ), or in a group of associated contaminants (GAC), PE-MP + GBH (5 mg L -1  + 5 mg L -1 ). Toxicity effects were evaluated using biochemical, cytogenetic, hematological, and histopathological biomarkers. We observed change in erythrocyte parameters leading to macrocytic normochromic anemia in GAC. Leukocyte parameters indicate a nonspecific immunosuppression caused by the exposure of associated contaminants, besides the attempts to repair damage caused by PE-MPs. Histopathological markers indicate damage to tissues exposed to contaminants. Besides, there were morphophysiological adjustments on gills, with proliferation and hypertrophy of mitochondria-rich cells on GBH and GAC, besides epithelium ruptures, which were mostly present in the exposed groups. Therefore, this study indicates that PE-MPs and GBHs present toxic effects in O. niloticus with the used concentrations, intensified by the association of contaminants. Pentachlorophenol (PCP) is a highly toxic and carcinogenic compound with significant environmental impact, necessitating effective treatment technologies. This study evaluates PCP removal mechanisms, including adsorption and biodegradation, during the startup of a horizontal-flow anaerobic immobilized biomass reactor (HAIB), and examines the impact of PCP concentration on microbial diversity using denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE). The primary mechanism for PCP removal in the HAIB was adsorption, effectively described by the Freundlich isotherm model. Adsorption efficiency ranged from 86 to 104% for PCP concentrations between 0.2 and 5.0 mg/L, and 46% to 64% for concentrations between 0.098 and 0.05 mg/L. Additionally, PCP degradation intermediates such as 2,3-DCP and 2,6-DCP were detected, indicating that biodegradation also occurred in the HAIB. Organic matter degradation averaged 81 ± 9%, and methane content in the biogas averaged 46 ± 9%, confirming the anaerobic process. No inhibition of microbial activity was observed due to PCP toxicity, even at a PCP load of 5 mg PCP/g STV per day. While the archaeal community showed only slight changes, with similarity coefficients ranging from 88 to 95%, the bacterial community was significantly affected by PCP, with similarity coefficients ranging from 18 to 50%. Bacterial groups were responsible for the initial PCP degradation, while the archaeal community was involved in metabolizing the resulting byproducts. The use of indigenous inoculum from the Santos-São Vicente estuary demonstrated its potential for effective PCP removal. Polyurethane foam proved to be an effective support material, enhancing the adsorption process and reducing PCP toxicity to the microbial consortium. The increase of mercury (Hg) concentrations in abiotic and biotic compartments of aquatic ecosystems following the river impoundment for building a hydroelectric reservoir is one of many environmental and social impacts that the construction of hydroelectric plants can trigger. Yet, long-term studies in Amazon reservoirs are still scarce. The present study aimed to understand the effects of dam impoundment in THg concentrations in an Amazon reservoir up to 35 years of its creation. On March 2019 (35th year after filling), samples of fish, soil, and sediments were collected in the Tucuruí reservoir. Total mercury (THg) concentrations were determinate in those samples and compared with data extract from previous studies referring to the 6 th , 16 th and 18 th years after the reservoir filling. Fish from different guilds at the 6th year after filling the Tucuruí reservoir had high THg concentrations, and those decreased in the 16 th and 18 th years, then the concentrations increased again in the 35 th year after filling. For soils and sediments, a decline in THg concentrations was observed. These results differ from previous studies that predicted that Hg concentrations in fish would return to natural concentrations within 30 years in temperate zones and no decline of THg concentrations would be observed for Amazonian reservoirs. The Tocantins river drainage basin has been subjected to multiple anthropic disturbances and land use changes over the past decades, such as the implementation of new hydroelectric plants, deforestation, and fires, which can explain our observations. Studies on the occurrence of POPs and other persistent compounds in pristine areas are extremely valuable, as they offer insights on the long-range transportation of POPs and the occurrence of natural compound producers' areas. In this regard, this study aimed to report data of both anthropogenic (polychlorinated biphenyls, PCBs, and polybrominated diphenyl ethers, PBDEs) and natural (methoxylated PBDEs, MeO-BDEs) compounds in tissues of the black triggerfish, Melichthys niger (Tetraodontiformes, Balistidae), specimens (n = 30) sampled in 2018 during a scientific expedition conducted at Trindade Island. Concentrations of ∑ 28 PCBs ranged from 73 to 1052 ng g -1 lw in liver, 334 to 1981 ng g -1 lw in gonads, and 20 to 257 ng g -1 lw in muscle, with the predominance of PCB-180 in liver and PCB-52 in gonad and muscle. Concentrations of ∑ 7 PBDEs ranged from -1 lw in liver, -1 lw in muscle, and they were < LOD in gonads. The BDE-47 was the most representative congener detected in liver and muscle. Mean concentrations of ∑ 8 MeO-BDEs were 270 ng g -1 lw, 442 ng g -1 lw, and 70 ng g -1 lw in liver, gonad, and muscle, respectively. The 2-MeO-BDE-68 was the most representative congener among MeO-BDEs. The mobilization of lower chlorinated PCBs from liver to other tissues, with possible retention of higher chlorinated PCBs in liver, can be a factor of concern considering the chronic exposure of those fish. PBDEs and MeO-BDEs in fish from remote environments were reported in a low number of studies worldwide. Coastal areas are affected by urban, industrial and agriculture pollutants runoff, wastewater and stormwater discharges, making this environment the final repository of chemical contaminants. These contaminants have the potential to spread out to the entire food chain, impacting marine life and the quality of their habitat. In this aspect, the concept of marine mammals as bioindicators provides an approach to the degree of contamination in the environment and to the identification and management of multiple sources of contaminants. The present study analyzed several elements like As, Ba, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, V and Zn in liver tissue from two dolphin species: Sotalia guianensis, a near-threatened species, and the vulnerable Pontoporia blainvillei. In the study, we also investigated if dolphins (population) recorded using the heaviest urban areas have higher concentrations of contaminants in their tissues. Dolphin samples (n = 40 S. guianensis; n = 97 P. blainvillei) were collected by daily monitoring carried out by Santos Basin Beach Monitoring Project (PMP-BS), from stranded individuals found in São Paulo state. The Spearman's rank correlation showed distinct correlations in the accumulation of trace elements by both species, indicating different sources of exposure to the elements studied or distinct biochemical processes between species. Interspecific and intraspecific variations were observed, possibly related to the individual distribution and feeding habits. Correlations were observed between age and concentrations of trace elements, positive for Cd, Hg and Mo. Cocaine (COC) and benzoylecgonine (BE), the main COC metabolite, have been detected in aquatic ecosystems. Studies focusing on wild fish are, however, very limited, and no reports concerning elasmobranchs are available. This study investigated COC and BE levels in Brazilian Sharpnose sharks (Rhizoprionodon lalandii) (n = 13) using LC-MS/MS. All samples (13/13) tested positive for COC, with 92 % (12/13) testing positive for BE. COC concentrations (23.0 μg kg -1 ) were over 3-fold higher than BE (7.0 μg kg -1 ). COC levels were about three-fold significantly higher in muscle (33.8 ± 33.4 g kg -1 ) compared to liver (12.2 ± 14.2 μg kg -1 ). Females presented higher COC concentrations in muscle (40.2 ± 35.8 μg kg -1 ) compared to males (12.4 ± 5.9 μg kg -1 ). Several positive statistical correlations were noted between COC and BE (rho = 0.84) in females, indicating systemic COC transport and metabolization, as well as between BE and weight (rho = 0.62), and between COC and the Condition Factor (rho = 0.73). A strong correlation was noted between BE and COC in the muscle of non-pregnant females (rho = 1.00). Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) comprise >4000 synthetic substances used in industrial applications and consumer products. PFAS used daily in households and manufacturing plants end up in domestic sewage, and industrial effluents can be discharged to surface water. Urban watersheds located in low and middle-income countries (LMIC), which lack sanitation infrastructure, are potential recipients of waste containing PFAS. Yet, only a few studies report PFAS occurrence in urban reservoirs and lakes, especially those located in the Global South due to resource limitations. This is the first study aimed to assess PFAS occurrence and ecological risks in Pampulha Lake, Brazil, a site which represents the reality of many other urban watersheds in LMIC as it is surrounded by densely populated areas and manufacturing plants. Surface water samples were collected monthly for 1 year from four sampling points at Pampulha Lake. Sample analysis was based on US Environmental Protection Agency Method 1633, which employs solid phase extraction followed by liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Species sensitivity distribution (SSD) curves were built to identify potentially susceptible species based on detected water concentrations. Bioaccumulation was estimated for fish tissue. Short-chain (perfluorobutanesulfonic acid, PFBS and perfluorohexanoic acid, PFHxA) and long-chain PFAS (perfluorodecanoic acid, PFDA; perfluorooctanoic acid, PFOA; perfluorododecanoic acid, PFDoA; and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid, PFOS) were detected at the μg L -1 range. Total PFAS concentrations in the wet season were generally higher than in the dry season, likely due to limited capacity of the treatment plant processing water from tributaries which receive raw sewage. More than 5 % of aquatic species are potentially susceptible to chronic effects of PFOS at detected concentrations (0.2-2.2 μg L -1 ). Predicted bioaccumulation of PFOS in fish was above advisory diet intake levels for humans. Aquatic biota are exposed to toxic substances resulting from human activities, reducing environmental quality and can compromise the health of the organisms. This study aimed to employ Danio rerio as an environmental bioindicator, analyzing the effects of water from distinct urban aquatic environments. An active biomonitoring system was set up to compare the temporal dynamics of histological biomarkers for gill and liver and the patterns of non-protein thiols (NPSH) in muscle in specimens exposed for 3, 6, and 12 days. Three large urban basins in the city of Campo Grande (Midwest of Brazil) were selected. Two sites are in a very populous area (i.e Lagoa and Bandeira) and another on in an area with agricultural activities (i.e Anhanduí). All the streams displayed distinct qualitative characteristics. The presence of metals, including Mn, Zn, Fe, and Al, as well as pH, temperature, and dissolved oxygen, accounted for 38% of the variability (PC1), while total solids, conductivity, ammonia, nitrite, and explained 24 % (PC2). Degree tissue changes index (DTC) in gill and the concentration of NPSH increased in all streams during 3, 6 and 12 days of exposure. DTC in liver increases in all exposure times in most populous stream (i.e Lagoa and Bandeira). Histopathological evidence in the gill, including proliferation, desquamation, and necrosis of the primary lamellar epithelium; fusion and aneurysms in the secondary lamellar epithelium were observed after three days of exposure. Degenerative nuclear figures were noted in the liver after three days of exposure, followed by hepatocellular hypertrophy, lipidosis, and necrosis at twelve days. Our findings showing time-dependent effects of urban aquatic environments in histopathological (i.e DTC) and biochemical biomarkers in zebrafish. The biomonitoring model enabled a comparison of the temporal dynamics of various health markers, using zebrafish as bioindicator. The use of effect biomarkers has contributed to the understanding of the sublethal effects of contaminants on different organisms. However, the analysis of genotoxic markers as an indicator of organism and environmental health in sharks is underexplored. Thus, the present study investigated the relationship between the genomic damage frequency in erythrocytes and metal(loid) concentrations in whole blood of three shark species (Galeocerdo cuvier, Negaprion brevirostris and Ginglymostoma cirratum), taking into account climatic seasonality. The results showed that G. cuvier, an apex predator, presented the highest total erythrocyte genomic damage frequencies together with the highest mean whole blood concentrations of Al, Cd, Cr, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn. The shark N. brevirostris also presented high levels of metal(loid), indicating a greater susceptibility to these contaminants in species that preferentially feed on fish. In contrast, G. cirratum, a mesopredator, presented the lowest erythrocyte damage frequencies and whole blood metal(loid) concentrations. The presence of micronuclei was the most responsive biomarker, and Al, As and Zn had an important effect on the genomic damage frequencies for all species evaluated. Zn concentration influenced the binucleated cells frequencies and Al concentration had an effect on the total damage and micronuclei frequencies in G. cuvier and N. brevirostris. Binucleated cells and blebbed nuclei frequencies were affected by As concentration, especially in G. cirratum, while showing a strong and positive correlation with most of the metals analyzed. Beneath the surface of our ecosystems, microplastics (MPs) silently loom as a significant threat. These minuscule pollutants, invisible to the naked eye, wreak havoc on living organisms and disrupt the delicate balance of our environment. As we delve into a trove of data and reports, a troubling narrative unfolds: MPs pose a grave risk to both health and food chains with their diverse compositions and chemical characteristics. Nevertheless, the peril extends further. MPs infiltrate the environment and intertwine with other pollutants. Worldwide, microplastic levels fluctuate dramatically, ranging from 0.001 to 140 particles.m -3 in water and 0.2 to 8766 particles.g -1 in sediment, painting a stark picture of pervasive pollution. Microplastics (MPs) are particles with sizes of ≤5 mm formed when plastic materials break down. These contaminants are often found in marine environments, making it easy for sea turtles to ingest them and for their microbiome to be exposed. MPs can disrupt microbiome balance, leading to dysbiosis and making organisms more susceptible to diseases. Owing to the significance of these processes, it is crucial to dedicate research to studying the metabolic and genetic analysis of the gut microbiome in sea turtles. The objective of this study was to describe the effects of exposure to MPs on the gut microbiome of sea turtles, based on current knowledge. This review also aimed to explore the potential link between MP exposure and disease susceptibility in these animals. We show that the metabolites produced by the gut microbiome, such as short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), polyamines, and polysaccharide A, can regulate the expression of host genes. Regulation occurs through various mechanisms, including histone acetylation, DNA methylation, and the modulation of cytokine gene expression. These processes are essential for preserving the integrity of the gut mucosa and enhancing the functionality of immune cells. Exposure to MPs disrupts the gut microbiome and alters gene expression, leading to immune system disturbances in sea turtles. This vulnerability makes turtles more susceptible to opportunistic microorganisms such as chelonid alphaherpesvirus 5 (ChAHV5), which is linked to the development of fibropapillomatosis (FP). Additionally, targeted dietary interventions or the use of live microorganisms such as probiotics can help restore microbial biodiversity and recover lost metabolic pathways. Elements that interfere with reproductive processes can have profound impacts on population and the equilibrium of ecosystems. Global warming represents the major environmental challenge of the 21st century, as it will affect all forms of life in the coming decades. Another coexisting concern is the persistent pollution by pesticides, particularly the herbicide Atrazine (ATZ), which is responsible for a significant number of contamination incidents in surface waters worldwide. While it is hypothesized that climate changes will significantly enhance the toxic effects of pesticides, the actual impact of these phenomena remain largely unexplored. Here, we conducted a climate-controlled room experiment to assess the interactive effects of the projected 2100 climate scenario and environmentally realistic ATZ exposures on the reproductive function of male zebrafish. The gonadosomatic index significantly decreased in fish kept in the extreme scenario. Cellular alterations across spermatogenesis phases led to synergic decreased sperm production and increased germ cell sloughing and death. ATZ exposure alone or combined with climate change effects, disrupted the transcription levels of key genes involved in steroidogenesis, hormone signaling and spermatogenesis regulation. An additive modulation with decreased 11-KT production and increased E2 levels was also evidenced, intensifying the effects of androgen/estrogen imbalance. Moreover, climate change and ATZ independently induced oxidative stress, upregulation of proapoptotic gene and DNA damage in post-meiotic germ cell, but the negative effects of ATZ were greater at extreme scenario. Ultimately, exposure to simulated climate changes severely impaired fertilization capacity, due to a drastic reduction in sperm motility and/or viability. These findings indicate that the future climate conditions have the potential to considerably enhance the toxicity of ATZ at low concentrations, leading to significant deleterious consequences for fish reproductive function and fertility. The study was conducted in Cerritos, San Luis Potosí, México, near the Guaxcama mine, focused on environmental contamination (groundwater and agricultural soil) from antimony (Sb), arsenic (As), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and mercury (Hg). In March 2022, 20 agricultural soil and 16 groundwater samples were collected near the historically cinnabar (HgS)- and arsenopyrite (FeAsS)-rich Guaxcama mine. Hydride generation atomic fluorescence spectrometry (HG-AFS) for As, cold vapor atomic fluorescence spectrometry (CV-AFS) for Hg, and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) for Cd, Pb, and Sb were used for the determinations of potentially toxic elements (PTEs). While concentrations of Cd, Hg, Pb, and Sb in groundwater were below detection limits, As levels exhibited a range from 40.9 ± 1.4 to 576.0 ± 1.0 µg/L, exceeding permissible limits for drinking water (10 µg/L). In agricultural soil, As was between 7.67 ± 0.16 and 24.1 ± 0.4 µg/g, Hg ranged from 0.203 ± 0.018 to 2.33 ± 0.19 µg/g, Cd from 2.53 ± 0.90 to 2.78 ± 0.01 µg/g, and Pb from 11.7 ± 1.2 to 34.3 ± 4.1 µg/g. Only one study area surpassed the Mexican As soil limit of 22 µg/g. Sequential extraction (four-step BCR procedure) indicated significant As bioavailability in soil (fractions 1 and 2) ranging from 3.66 to 10.36%, heightening the risk of crop transfer, in contrast to the low bioavailability of Hg, showing that fractions 1, 2, and 3 were below the limit of quantification (LOQ). Crucial physicochemical parameters in soil, including nitrate levels, pH, and organic matter, were pivotal in understanding contamination dynamics. Principal component analysis highlighted the influence of elements like Fe and Ca on phytoavailable As, while Pb and Cd likely originated from a common source. Ecological risk assessments underscored the significant impact of pollution, primarily due to the concentrations of Cd and Hg. Non-cancer and cancer risks to residents through As poisoning via contaminated water ingestion also were found. The hazard index (HI) values varied between 4.0 and 82.2 for adults and children. Numerous studies reveal pollutants like clindamycin (CLD) in the environment, posing environmental and health risks. Conventional water treatment methods are ineffective at removing these contaminants, typically found in low concentrations. An innovative treatment approach is introduced through pre-concentration via adsorption, which is highly efficient, energy-saving, and reusable. The innovation uses solvents like methanol or ethanol to desorb pollutants, creating concentrated CLD solutions for more effective electrochemical degradation than conventional methods. Thus, this study explores, for the first time, the behavior of CLD electro-oxidation in different media-water, methanol, and ethanol-using a Dimensionally Stable Anode (DSA®-Cl₂). The study reveals distinct degradation mechanisms and offers new insights into solvent-assisted electrochemical treatments. After 30 min of electrolysis, all the current densities evaluated promoted significant degradation, ranging from 90 to 92%. The energy consumption was 2.9 Wh m⁻³ per percentage point at current densities of 2 and 3.5 mA cm⁻ 2 . This demonstrates that using higher current densities over shorter electrolysis times is feasible, achieving removal rates of approximately 90%.The performance of chloride-based electrolytes was superior to that of sulfate-based electrolytes due to the ability of DSA®-Cl 2 electrodes to generate reactive chlorine species more efficiently. A higher concentration of supporting electrolytes initially improved CLD removal, but no significant changes were observed after 1 h. Neutral pH conditions optimized CLD degradation, achieving up to 91% removal. Higher pollutant concentrations were associated with lower kinetic constants and decreased removal percentages. Methanol and ethanol enhanced removal rates to 98.3% and 92.3%, respectively, by generating oxidizing species such as methoxy, hydroxymethyl, and ethoxy radicals. The degradation by-products differed across the three media, with each solvent exhibiting distinct oxidation mechanisms. Treating emerging pollutants at low concentrations presents significant challenges in terms of degradation efficiency. Anodic oxidation using active and non-active electrodes shows great potential for wastewater treatment. Thus, this study compared the efficiency of a commercial mixed metal oxide anode (MMO: Ti/Ti 0.7 Ru 0.3 O 2 ) and a boron-doped diamond anode (BDD) for the electrochemical oxidation of diuron in methanol, in chloride and sulfate media. The MMO anode achieved diuron removal rates of 94.9% and 92.8% in chloride and sulfate media, respectively, with pseudo-first-order kinetic constants of 0.0177 and 0.0143 min -1 . The BDD anode demonstrated slightly higher removal rates, achieving 96.2% in sulfate medium and 96.9% in chloride medium, with respective kinetic constants of 0.0193 min⁻ 1 and 0.0177 min⁻ 1 . Increasing the current density enhanced diuron removal by up to 15% for both electrodes; however, excessively high current densities led to increased energy consumption due to side reactions. The present of water had antagonistic effects, resulting in removal rates of 91.1% for chloride media using the BDD anode; and 87.4% and 90.4% in sulfate media with MMO and BDD anodes, respectively. The MMO anode in chloride medium did not show significant difference in the degradation percentage, reaching 96% of diuron removals. The degradation mechanism was proposed based on the detection of various by-products. The primary reactions observed during the oxidation of diuron in methanol involved chlorine substitution in the aromatic ring and dealkylation. This work developed a novel sustainable adsorbent (PF-Aq) prepared by the amino-functionalization of palm oil fibers (PF). XPS, SEM/EDS, TGA/DSC, and FT-IR techniques proved the successful functionalization of the PF with the amino group. The PF-Aq adsorbent presents a high adsorption capacity for phosphate and Cr(VI) ions. Adsorption kinetics of the ions onto the PF-Aq followed the general-order models, with 240- and 300-min equilibrium times for phosphate and Cr(VI), respectively. The Freundlich equilibrium model can explain the adsorption of phosphate and Cr(VI) on the PF-Aq. Besides, the maximum adsorption capacities were 151.07 mg g -1 for phosphate and 206.08 mg g -1 for Cr(VI). The best pH for the adsorption of both ions on PF-Aq was 4.0. Interestingly, adsorption was exothermic for phosphate and endothermic for Cr(VI). The adsorption capacities were reduced by 16% for phosphate and 10% for Cr(VI) after 5 adsorption-desorption cycles, demonstrating the good recyclability of the PF-Aq. It can be concluded that PF-Aq is a relevant adsorbent to uptake phosphate and Cr(VI) from water due to its high adsorption capacity, low cost, recyclability, availability, and fast kinetics. Continental aquatic environments have undergone chemical pollution due to increased anthropogenic activities. Among those substances, petroleum hydrocarbons are a potential hazard for the aquatic animals. Additionally, alterations in the abiotic characteristics of the water, such as temperature and pH, can impose additional stress when those substances are present. We evaluate how alterations in water temperature and pH modified the acute (96 h) toxicity of the water-soluble fraction of gasoline (WSF G ) to Astyanax altiparanae through physiological analysis. We also investigated the physiological responses after the fish recovery from exposure (96 h) in clean water. Both isolated and combined exposures to WSF G resulted in significant physiological changes. Alone, WSF G altered energetic metabolism and haematopoietic functions, potentially due to metabolic hypoxia. When combined with changes in water temperature (30 °C) and pH (4.0), A. altiparanae activated additional physiological mechanisms to counterbalance osmoregulatory and acid-base imbalances, likely exacerbated by severe metabolic hypoxia. In both isolated and combined exposure scenarios, A. altiparanae maintained cellular hydration, suggesting a robust capacity to uphold homeostasis under environmental stress conditions. Following a recovery in clean water, energetic metabolism returned to control levels. Nevertheless, plasmatic Na + and Cl - levels and haematological parameters remained affected by WSF G exposure. The Sepetiba Bay (SB, SE Brazil) is a highly anthropized and industrialized area that has experienced severe environmental degradation in recent decades. This study applies a multiproxy approach to document the response of living benthic foraminifera to environmental stress and to infer the Ecological Quality Status (EcoQS) in SB. Our methodology involved a comprehensive comparison of the density and percentage of benthic foraminiferal species with physicochemical, textural, and geochemical data, specifically the concentrations of potentially toxic elements (PTEs). We also statistically compared two geochemical indices, the pollution load index (PLI) and the potential ecological risk index (PERI), with two ecological indices, the Tolerant Species Index (TSI) and the Exp(H'bc). The TSI and the Exp(H'bc) indices are significantly correlated with the environmental stressors in Sepetiba Bay, namely the PTEs concentrations (As, Cd, Pb, and Zn). The most tolerant species to the enrichment of PTEs and organic matter are Ammonia tepida (Cushman, 1926), Elphidium excavatum (Terquem, 1875), Ammonia buzasi Hayward and Holzmann, 2021 and Ammonia rolshauseni (Cushman and Bermúdez, 1946). The Exp(H'bc) and TSI reveal that most stations located in the inner zone and near the margins of the bay have poor and bad EcoQS, which agrees with the distribution of the environmental stressors. Thus, the current environmental conditions of the inner area of Sepetiba Bay are of great concern. This work also shows that using the TSI and the Exp(H'bc) indices, it is possible to classify EcoQS in transitional coastal environments in the North and South Atlantic transitional waters. Industrial effluents, especially those containing dyes, have become the main cause of contamination of water resources. In this context, Brazilian bentonite/MgO composites, with excellent adsorptive properties, were prepared and investigated for their effectiveness in removing cationic and anionic dyes from aqueous solutions. The new adsorbents were obtained using Brazilian bentonites and MgO using the mechanochemical method followed by heat treatment (at 700 °C for 4 h). Different characterization techniques were used for the chemical, mineralogical, thermal, surface, and morphological analysis of the raw clays and the composites. The experimental adsorption isotherms were quantified under different conditions of initial concentration, contact time, pH, adsorbent dosage, and temperature variation to interpret the adsorption mechanism of the crystal violet (CV) and Congo red (CR) dyes. The modeling results were obtained from the empirical Sips equation and Pseudo Second Order (PSO) kinetics, indicating that the adsorption of molecules is a heterogeneous phenomenon that occurs in a monolayer on the surface (n s  > 1), with the adsorption rate determined by chemisorption. The composites showed the best removal efficiency performance compared to the raw bentonites, with an increase of 12% for the CV dye and 46% for the CR dye. In addition, the q max values obtained were 423.02 mg/g and 479.86 mg/g (AM01). A novel biocomposite (FPPW-β-CD) was prepared by a simple and sustainable method involving fine potato peel waste, β-cyclodextrin (β-CD), and green citric acid through the crosslinking reaction. The polymer was characterized using SEM, FTIR, XRD, TGA, and DSC analyses. The adsorbent performance was evaluated about the glyphosate and diuron adsorption from the aqueous solution. Pesticide removal was investigated regarding the influence of solution pH, temperature, and initial concentration of contaminants. Also, it highlights the main interactions involved in the adsorption phenomenon based on the pH effect and characteristics of adsorbent and adsorbate molecules. The maximum adsorption capacity values according to the Sips model were higher than 2000 µg g -1 . The pseudo-second-order and general-order models described the kinetic data well. Thermodynamic parameters indicated that pesticide removal was spontaneous and favorable. The magnitude of enthalpy variation values (27.37 kJ mol -1 and - 100.79 kJ mol -1 ) revealed that the glyphosate and diuron adsorption occurred through the physisorption and chemisorption, respectively. TiO 2 /expanded graphite (TiO 2 /EG) composite films were applied to water treatment for sulfadiazine (SDZ) degradation in a continuous flat plate photochemical reactor. The films were synthesized by sol-gel method and deposited on borosilicate glass by airbrush spray coating technique, forming a TiO 2 /C heterojunction. Increasing the amount of carbon promoted more efficient photocatalytic removal of SDZ under simulated sunlight, which increased from 9.1% in the absence of carbon to 49.8% for the material containing 7.5% C. From the formation of the TiO 2 /C heterojunction, morphological modifications, changes in the electronic structure and reduction of the band gap energy were observed. Type-II heterojunction formation was observed. Foreground and background irradiation modes were investigated, and a possible photocatalytic mechanism was proposed. TiO 2 /7.5 %-EG exhibited the best photocatalytic performance, with the possibility of reuse. The films showed good reusability in the SDZ degradation over 4 photocatalytic cycles. The influence of irradiation modes and the role of oxidizing species were discussed. The wide range of applications of nanomaterials (NM) in different fields has led to both uncontrolled production and release into environmental compartments, such as aquatic systems, where final disposal occurs. Some efforts have been made to estimate their concentrations in environmental matrices; however, little is known about the actual effects of environmental NM concentrations on biota. The aims of the present review are to (i) expose the state of the art of the most applied NM and their actual concentrations regarding how much is being released to the aquatic environment and which are the predicted ones; (ii) analyze the current literature to elucidate if the aforementioned conditions were proven to cause deleterious effects on the associated organisms; and (iii) identify gaps in the knowledge regarding whether the actual NM concentrations are harmful to aquatic biota. These novel materials are expected to being released into the environment in the range of hundreds to thousands of tons per year, with Si- and Ti-based NM being the two most important. The estimated environmental NM concentrations are in the low range of ng to µg/L, except for Ti-based ones, which concentrations reach values on the order of mg/L. Empirical information regarding the ecotoxicity of environmental NM concentrations mainly focused on metal-based NM, however, it resulted poor and unbalanced in terms of materials and test species. Given its high predicted environmental concentration in comparison with the others, the ecotoxicity of Ti-based NM has been well assessed in algae and fish, while little is known regarding other NM types. While only a few marine species were addressed, the freshwater species Daphnia magna and Danio rerio accounted for the majority of studies on invertebrate and fish groups, respectively. Most of the reported responses are related to oxidative stress. Overall, we consider that invertebrate groups are the most vulnerable, with emphasis on microcrustaceans, as environmentally realistic metal-based NM concentration even caused mortality in some species. In the case of fish, we assumed that environmental concentrations of Ti-based NM represent a growing concern and threat; however, further studies should be carried out by employing other kinds of NM. The coastal areas of Montevideo-Canelones, Uruguay, are strongly affected by anthropogenic activities. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are of especial ecological concern due to their acute toxicity. The study aimed to evaluate the relationship between different pollution levels and the ecological structure of macrobenthic communities of the subtidal coastal zone and to assess the ecological risk of the 16 PAHs identified by US EPA for these communities. Communities in Montevideo Bay are under the influence of combined effects of natural oscillations and anthropic pollution, while the adjacent coastal areas communities are strongly influenced by El Niño Southern Oscillation. Toxicity assessments classified two sites in Montevideo Bay as medium to low risk. Pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) have been detected in several aquatic compartments, which has been of environmental concern since PhACs can cause adverse effects on the aquatic ecosystem at low concentrations. Despite the variety of PhACs detected in surface water, ecotoxicological studies are non-existent for many of them, mainly regarding their mixture. In addition, water bodies can continuously receive the discharge of raw or treated wastewater with micropollutants. Thus, PhACs are subject to mixture and interactions, potentiating or reducing their toxicity. Therefore, the present study evaluated the toxicity on Aliivibrio fischeri of seven PhACs, which still needs to be explored in the literature. The effects were evaluated for the PhACs individually and for their binary and tertiary mixture. Also, the experimental effects were compared with the concentration addition (CA) and independent action (IA) models. Finally, an environmental risk assessment was carried out. Fenofibrate (FEN), loratadine (LOR), and ketoprofen (KET) were the most toxic, with EC 50 of 0.32 mg L -1 , 6.15 mg L -1 and 36.8 mg L -1 , respectively. Synergistic effects were observed for FEN + LOR, KET + LOR, and KET + FEN + LOR, showing that the CA and IA may underestimate the toxicity. Environmental risks for KET concerning algae, and LOR e 17α-ethynylestradiol (EE2) for crustaceans and fish were high for several locations. Besides, high removals by wastewater treatment technologies are required to achieve the concentrations necessary for reducing KET and LOR risk quotients. Microbiota exposed to pollution provide insights into host physiology and ecosystem disruption. This study evaluated Enterococcus spp. tolerant to arsenic (As), copper (Cu), and mercury (Hg) from red-billed tropicbirds (Phaethon aethereus) and brown boobies (Sula leucogaster), which previously showed these metals in their blood and feathers, and their potential use as bioindicators of metal contamination. Enterococcus casseliflavus (47.9 %), E. faecalis (34.1 %), E. hirae (11.7 %), and E. faecium (5.3 %) were identified. Both seabird species had a high incidence of As-tolerant bacteria (84.0 %), with 40.4 % of these strains containing As efflux system genes (arsA&#95;I and arsA&#95;II). Cu efflux pump gene (tcrB) was detected in 30.9 % of strains, while Hg reductase genes (mer) were not found. As- and Cu-tolerance in enterococci observed in this study underlines their potential as bioindicators in metal-polluted marine environments.
