CONSTRUCTION materials , *WASTE management , *LABOR costs , *DRYWALL , *MACHINERY - Abstract
A study was prepared, which consists of the economic evaluation of two important materials in the construction of the interior partitions of the 3rd floor in a 21-floor building located in the city of Concepción. These materials are plasterboard and metalcon profiles. Within this study, the acquisition cost of these two materials was evaluated, as well as the cost associated with labor and machinery involved in the transportation process on site. In addition, the waste generated by both materials was accounted for, to quantify the costs related to waste management. Finally, a proposal is presented to achieve the optimization of these materials within the work, with the aim of achieving a better use of both. This entails great benefits for the company, since it is possible to reduce the number of materials that are currently used, and the amount of waste generated within the work. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Decree-Law No. 11/2023, published on February 10, 2023, reforms and simplifies environmental procedures in Portugal. The objective of this reform is to reduce burdens, eliminate licenses, and simplify administrative procedures for companies operating in the environmental sector. The aim is to promote competitiveness, investment, and growth, as well as energy transition and the circular economy. The decree includes 30 measures divided into five groups: streamlining the environmental impact assessment (EIA) procedure, environmental licensing, water resource utilization, waste management, and cross-cutting measures. The goal is to reduce the need for EIA in projects considered to have little impact, avoid duplications of procedures, and simplify the obtaining of environmental licenses. Additionally, the "Single Environmental Report" is created to simplify and digitize information obligations. [Extracted from the article]

CIRCULAR economy , *UNPAID labor , *WASTE management , *ECOFEMINISM , *CAPITALISM - Abstract
Ambitions for a European "circular economy" imply waste is becoming an important "commodity frontier". Increased recycling in Europe has been accompanied by a proliferation of informal waste work. "Southern" geographies of informal recyclers provide resources for interpreting this phenomenon but studies of a commodity frontier in urban waste have tended to focus on moments when informal waste workers are displaced by capital intensive waste management systems. I draw on concepts in world‐ecology and materialist ecofeminism to explore the proliferation of informal waste workers in Barcelona and the way their (re)production produces "Metabolic Value". Informal waste work is shown to emerge and persist as part of a commodity frontier process—where the appropriation of unpaid work from non‐commodified spaces is the hallmark of how capitalism secures "Cheap Nature". The study suggests that, rather than internalising ecological costs, recycling often rests on the appropriation of value from uncommodified spaces. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Royal Decree 1055/2022 establishes the minimum requirements for extended producer responsibility in the management of packaging waste, in compliance with Directive (EU) 2018/851. Existing waste management systems must adapt to this law within one year. The objective is to adapt Spanish packaging regulations to the new extended producer responsibility regime established by the European Union, promoting prevention, reuse, recycling, and recovery of packaging waste. In addition, provisions are established regarding the deposit, return, and refund system for reusable packaging and certain single-use beverage containers, as well as information obligations and control and sanction regulations. How waste should flow and who should pay for and benefit from these flows have never been easy questions. Recent efforts to recognize and capture value from (some) waste has led to new flows and new conflicts. In this article, we explore ongoing ideas and initiatives about reworking the wastescape in three South African cities. Various actors seek to capture more waste, make the wastescape more legible, and shift the costs of work. Despite ongoing rhetoric that frames waste as a new resource, interviewees note that much easily accessed waste is already claimed, and there are underemphasized costs associated with increasing the volume of collected waste. In this context, we consider efforts to change the wastescape as ways of reconfiguring existing flows and reworking ongoing arrangements of the state, industry, reclaimers, and workers. This includes changing who is permitted to access waste and create value. Across our interviewees, we find many contrasting ideas about what more desirable infrastructure might entail. We suggest that contestations over waste are not just about permission to create value but are underwritten by different visions of what infrastructure is and ought to be, who ought to know and govern it, and in whose interest waste flows. Medical waste constitutes a complex legal reality. This is the consequence of a disperse and heterogeneous regulatory group that is structured mainly through regional regulation. Although matters related to medical waste have been part of the sectoral legislation on waste, their prominence has been less, as evidenced in the latest regulatory updates that, influenced by the principle of waste hierarchy and under the inspiration of economics circular, have given a secondary space to sanitary waste. However, the health crisis caused by COVID-19 has revealed the effects that incorrect treatment and management of this waste can have on the population and in relation to public health. This article aims to address the changing relationship between waste and urban space in Buenos Aires. Specifically, based on an analysis of the period between 1976 and 2019, it seeks to understand the way in which cartoneros (waste pickers) are inscribed today. By studying the productive role played by frontiers as sites of conflict, this paper presents three movements in which borders trace over waste. This mapping reveals the place of the cartoneros as important actors in a network that links waste management, the production of urban space, and a certain way of organizing the labor force. WASTE disposal sites , *SEWAGE disposal plants , *INDUSTRIAL wastes , *WASTE management , *ENVIRONMENTAL impact statements , *DISTILLERY by-products - Abstract
The article summarizes a sentence from the Superior Court of Justice of Castilla-León (Burgos) dated July 9, 2011, in which the Environmental Authorization granted to the company "Distiller, S.A." for the installation of a waste management and treatment plant in Ólvega (Soria) was challenged. The court determined that the activity required environmental authorization and that the competence to issue the Environmental Impact Statement corresponded to the Territorial Delegation of the Junta de Castilla y León. Furthermore, it was concluded that the Industrial Waste Plan of Castilla y León did not comply with the determinations established in community and national legislation, which compromised waste disposal. The author comments that the lack of waste disposal sites and the lack of adequate plans make it difficult to grant authorizations. [Extracted from the article]

PLASTICS in packaging , *LANDSCAPE assessment , *COVID-19 , *WASTE management , *PLASTICS - Abstract
Waste has been generating environmental problems for a long time, but some, such as packaging and plastics, have a proven utility (as we are verifying during the coronavirus epidemic); justifying the intervention of the Law. This regulation has evolved according to the perception of the environmental problems posed by waste, packaging and plastics; specifically, from the idea of "produce, use and throw away" it has moved to the circular economy. The work analyzes this normative evolution in the European Union and in Spain, from the original regulation to the current one, which already incorporates the philosophy of the circular economy, mainly in relation to plastics, and particularly at the national level, with projects and standards new in this matter. Estimate waste generated in civil construction accurately is vital for minimizing them in the project stage. This vision allows designers to visualize and explore possible corrective measures in order to increase construction efficiency. In addition, it can enable contractors to identify critical processes in waste generation and plan control strategies. By integrating several projects into a single model, Building Information Modeling (BIM) can assist the solution of this challenge. The main goal of this work was to develop an integrated BIM API to optimize construction waste management. The chosen method for this research was Design Science Research (DSR). Throughout the development, one building, built with 3 (three) construction methods was evaluated. The result was a construction waste index in order to classify buildings according to their construction waste generation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Industrial production operations generate waste that impacts on soils, water and atmosphere. In Brazil, industrial operation of production of orange juice, frozen and concentrated (FCOJ) have impact upon the environment due to millions of tons of waste and by-products generated. The objective of this research is to propose a methodological framework to evaluate the environmental performance of the disposal of waste and by-products generated in the industrial stage of FCOJ production. A construct based on 37 residues/by-products from FCOJ production, weighted through the analytic hierarchy process method, was elaborated. The main contributions of the proposal are: specificities of the productive process have been considered; it is based on the waste and by-products generated; it weighs the impact on water, soil and atmosphere for each waste and by-product, according its composition and quantity generated; it shows the adequate shedding for each element considered. The Municipality of Santa Vitória, located in the state of Minas Gerais, is one of the Brazilian municipalities that has adhered to the idea of development in recent decades, thanks to the implementation of sugar and ethanol plants and, in parallel with this increase in population, the generation of a greater amount of trash. In this sense, due attention must be given to the destination and disposal of these residues, which will allow a good quality of life and the conservation of the environment. Thus, this study results in a description of the destination of garbage and all urban waste in the municipality of Santa Vitória. Its objective was to know the destination of urban waste in the city of Santa Vitória, through public and legal documents and information on waste management in the municipality, visit and observation in addition to bibliographic research in scientific literature in order to contribute to the reflection on the impact of the generation of waste discarded daily in the environment, as well as discussing ways to face this issue. An analysis of documents, legislation and literature on the subject was carried out, and observation and photographic record of the activities and places involving the destination of urban waste in the municipality. Through the research carried out, it is clear that there are still many improvements to be made, since there is no selective collection implemented, which would promote the generation of employment and income. It is important to adopt these measures as a way to reduce the volume of material that goes to the local landfill, increase its useful life and reduce the demand for natural resources. It is worth mentioning the importance of the measures already taken, such as turning the controlled landfill into a sanitary landfill, as it is a method of final disposal with greater advantages, considering the reduction of negative environmental impacts and risks to the health of the population.

[EN] The European Directive 2018/851, which modifies the European Directive 2008/98/EC on waste, determines that by the year 2025 the preparation for reuse and recycling should account for at least 55% by weight in the case of municipal waste. Today, Spain stands at 35%, far from the minimum established by Europe, however, many municipalities and cities are taking measures to correct the situation. One of these measures is the implementation of the Door-to-Door selective waste collection system. It has been shown, especially in Catalonia and the Basque Country, that the door-to-door collection system allows a greater recovery of urban waste compared to traditional collection systems, reaching percentages of recycled material in waste ranging from 60 % to 90% Meliana is a municipality with a population of 10,926 inhabitants. It currently has a traditional urban waste collection system in place with rear-loading containers located on public roads. The objective of this work will be the implementation of the door-to-door selective waste collection system in Meliana. For this it will be necessary to know the current situation through a field study, later, with the starting data obtained, the dimensioning of the service will be carried out, proposing some routes and service itineraries with certain frequencies for each fraction and calculating the necessary equipment for the provision of the service in the entire municipality. The final solution adopted will be justified and a final budget will be made.

The residues from agricultural and agroindustrial activities are not adequately valorised and at best they are destined for animal consumption or else they are inadequately disposed of. The objective of the present work was to estimate and highlight the energy (calorific and electric) potential of second-generation bioethanol production using lignocellulosic waste from the most important crops in Peru. In addition, the reduction of CO2 emissions by using bioethanol produced from those lignocellulosic wastes was estimated. The biomass considered in this study was from the harvest and processing of sugarcane, rice, banana, yellow corn, oil palm and asparagus. It was determined that the annual lignocellulosic biomass availability was ~22 million tons, from which, 33.03% correspond to banana waste, 28.56% correspond to sugarcane waste. The potential of bioethanol production and energy generation was obtained using a theory conversion of cellulose, hemicellulose of each biomass. It was calculated 3.51 million tons of bioethanol/year, which total energy corresponds to 2.16 million toe/year with an electric energy potential of 8.81 GWh/year. This quantity could be enough to supply 9.11% and the total national energy demand and 0.02% of the electric energy demand, besides, it could help reduce in about 19.86% the CO2 emissions. Objective: To evaluate the association between living near waste recycling sites and emotional or behavioral difficulties in schoolchildren. Methodology: A cross-sectional study with schoolchildren aged 6-13 years old from disadvantaged communities in a Brazilian city, divided between those who live less than 100 m away from the central point of the recycling site and those that live more than 150 m away from the site, as a control group and classified through georeferencing. The emotional and behavioral difficulties were investigated using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire tool. Other variables were analyzed through logistic regression to determine their contribution to the outcomes. Results: Children living near waste recycling sites had a higher prevalence of emotional and behavioral problems than children living farther away. In the logistic regression model, no other covariates had a significant impact on the results, except for attending preschool. As expected, the families of the exposed group had lower income and lower levels of schooling, thus being characterized as a highly vulnerable population. Conclusion: The association between living near waste recycling sites and lower test performance raises concerns about the impact of inappropriate waste management in urban centers on children's health.

The objective of this study was to analyze the management and use of organic solid waste through generation rates by type of waste in the sodas of the Campus Omar Dengo of the National University of Costa Rica. The raw and cooked residues were collected in five sodas, weighed and based on this data, daily waste generation rates were calculated. In addition, a survey was conducted in order to determine the perception of users about this problem. It was evidenced that the amount of waste varied significantly during the sampling period and it varies in each soda. Social aspects, as well as quality and proximity, induce greater user assistance; therefore, the generation of waste is increased. It is concluded that it is necessary deeper studies that allow the reduction of waste, as well as the awareness of the users of the sodas El objetivo de este estudio fue analizar la gestión y el aprovechamiento de los residuos sólidos orgánicos mediante tasas de generación, por tipo de residuos, en las sodas del Campus Omar Dengo. [EN] In the following document, a complete compilation about all the possible information about waste recovery related technologies will be carried out, technologies that nowadays are used in the Spanish thermic treatment recovery plants. Insofar, a comparative study will be done, seeking the similarities and pinpointing the differences found between them. The aim of this study is the increasing need for the use of cleaner energetic related technologies. The use of these kind of processes for energy production, its harness of waste, and later, the comparison in our country. By those means, the document will result as a guide of the actual situation of this sector in Spain. In order to do so, the used technologies in different Spanish recovery plants will be analysed. The way in which those wastes arrive to the recovery plants, how easy is to follow them up, the technologies and machineries that are used, and finally, the emissions that are related to this type of plants.

This study evaluates the relationship of the bentonite content and hydraulic conductivity coefficient (k) of waste foundry sands in tests of hydraulic conductivity in a flexible wall permeameter. The test samples had concentrations of activated sodium bentonite and natural sodium bentonite between 4% and 15%. It was also analyzed chemically the liquid leachate (aluminum, barium, chromium, cadmium, lead, phenols, iron, fluoride, and manganese, following de standard tests of Standard Methods 3111 B e D for the determination of this components in liquid samples). The experiments were supplemented with cation exchange capacity analysis. The results indicate that the values of are is related to the content of bentonite in waste foundry sand and the percolation from this waste disposal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
