This research determines the optimal rotary dryer design for banana waste drying with Biot number. When banana waste is adequately dried, it can be repurposed into valuable resources. Based on the proposed banana plant waste rotary dryer, drying efficiency is significantly improved compared to conventional dryers as attributed to design calculations and simulation. Here, the design process involves the three-dimensional (3D) computer-aided design of individual parts, subassemblies, and main assembly, accompanied by detailed illustration drawings, and optimization of rotary dryer flight design. Biot number is crucial in the design calculations of the diameter and length of the dryer. The Design of Experiments (DoE) and computational fluid dynamics simulations are also used. Proper drying, facilitated by the proposed rotary dryer, enables efficient repurposing of banana waste into animal feed, biofuel, bioplastics, and other nanotechnology applications, contributing to sustainable waste management practices and a promising solution to environmental challenges. Composting is widely adopted in livestock waste management, and the ventilation system control is essential for composting efficiency. For ventilation system, the airflow resistance is a major factor influencing the ventilation intensity and oxygen supply capacity. This study explored the variation law of airflow resistance, bulk density, specific gravity, particle size and total pressure throughout composting with cattle manure. The airflow resistance was calculated with Ergun equation, and contribution coefficients of different components were analyzed with principal component analysis (PCA). Results showed that the viscous airflow resistance was dominant throughout cattle manure composting. The average airflow resistance was 0.146 Pa/m, and resistance of pile at lower layer was higher than that at the upper layer by 18.1 %. For contribution coefficient affecting airflow resistance, the ranks were bulk density, average particle size and specific gravity. During composting process, the average airflow resistance decreased by 40.1 % and the total pressure reduced by 3.47 %. All parameters had the greatest variation at thermophilic phase, which accounted for more than 60 % of the total variation amplitude. Meanwhile, less than 10 % of the total pressure was used to overcome the airflow resistance. Therefore, reducing bulk density of pile should be considered preferentially to decrease the airflow resistance. During cattle manure composting process, the total pressure of ventilation system ought to be adjusted with the aerobic reaction to a lower level, especially at thermophilic phase with the most rapid descent rate. Bioconversion of livestock wastes using insect larvae represents an emerging and effective strategy for waste management. However, knowledge on the role of the garden fruit chafer (Pachnoda sinuata L.) in waste recycling and influence on the diversity of microbial community in frass fertilizer is limited. Here, we determined whether and to what extent the conversion of cattle dung into insect frass fertilizer by P. sinuata influences the frass' microbial community and its associated antibiotic resistance genes abundance. Pachnoda sinuata larvae were used to valorise cattle dung into frass fertilizer; samples were collected weekly to determine the composition of bacteria and fungi, and antibiotic resistant genes using molecular tools. Results revealed that bioconversion of cattle dung by P. sinuata larvae significantly increased the richness of beneficial bacteria in the frass fertilizer by 2.5-folds within 28 days, but fungal richness did not vary during the study. Treatment of cattle dung with P. sinuata larvae caused 2 – 3-folds decrease in the genes conferring resistance to commonly used antibiotics such as aminoglycoside, diaminopyrimidine, multidrug, sulfonamide and tetracycline within 14 days. Furthermore, the recycling cattle dung using considerably reduced the abundance of mobile genetic elements known to play critical roles in the horizontal transfer of antibiotic resistance genes between organisms. This study highlights the efficiency of saprohytic insects in recycling animal manure and suppressing manure-borne pathogens in the organic fertilizer products, opening new market opportunities for innovative and safe bio-based products and achieving efficient resource utilization in a circular and green economy. Steam explosion (SE) technology has been widely used to treat lignocellulosic materials for a long time. However, the investigation regarding SE applied for animal waste treatment is limited. With an increase in the demand for and consumption of meat, the annual production of various animal by-products, such as animal keratinous waste and bone waste, is also increasing in slaughterhouses. Therefore, a green method for disposing of these by-products is needed. In this article, the current SE devices, together with their characteristics and applications in wool, feather, hoof, and animal bone, are reviewed systematically. Different SE conditions result in the production of varying final products, from which keratin and other constituents (protein, lipid, or carbohydrate) can be extracted. Additionally, under proper conditions, SE can induce the liquefaction of animal wastes, such as porcine hoof shells, bovine bone, and even the whole chicken carcass. The advantages and limitations of the SE technology employed for treating animal waste were analyzed. Simultaneously, the reasons SE is used to treat animal keratin and bone wastes were also discussed. Animal wastes (AWs) are excreta or discarded materials associated with animal production industries. It could be in solid, liquid, or gaseous form, such as animal dung or droppings, discarded feed, feathers, fur, decayed bodies of dead animals, blood waste, effluent from animal farms, milk wastes, urine, and fart. Animal wastes are generated in high quantity, even beyond the control of animal farmers, due to the increase in animal production globally. These wastes pollute the ecosystem. They release greenhouse gases (GHGs) such as methane (CH4), carbon dioxide (CO2), and nitrous oxide (N2O) into the atmosphere through anaerobic fermentation which deplete ozone layer. Nitrogen and phosphorus constituents of Aws alter soil texture and pollute water bodies through run-off and direct disposal into water systems. The resultant effects of the pollution include climate change, degradation of soil and burning of crops, death of aquatic biota, release of offensive odour, especially ammonia (NH3) and hydrogen sulphide (H2S), and cause diseases of public health concern to human beings and animals. These consequences are due to the emission of harmful gases and compounds and the presence of pathogens in the waste. Animal wastes are potential sources of income and resources, and their environmental consequences could be reduced if farmers could use innovative approaches such as vermicomposting, production of biogas using wastes, membrane filtration, liquid – solid separation, thermal treatment and chemical treatment approaches to manage animal wastes. Government regulation and policies against indiscriminate disposal and application of animal wastes, coupled with the sensitization of people to the benefits and dangers associated with animal waste, could also prevent environmental challenges. The collection is dedicated to the conversion of biomass wastes into value-added bioproducts and bioactive compounds, with a focus on their applications in the agro-energy sector. Of particular relevance were three studies evaluating the effects of livestock waste, rice straw and biochar on soil properties, crops and productivity. Of note were two articles on the bioconversion of aquaculture sludge by insects and the production of biofuel from seed oil as an alternative to overcoming the depletion of fossil fuels. Finally, one article analysed the potential for recovering organic and mineral compounds from gastropod shells. Background: Utilization of livestock waste and by products are always considered to be an important source of livelihood for environment protection and agricultural development. The study explores the prospective scope of livestock waste utilization by dwelling into the livestock holdings and their health profile, waste management and bio-security practices for sustainable livelihoods of small and marginal livestock farmers of tribal belts. Methods: With an empirical survey, an analysis is made on the waste management practices in selective states of North East India (Assam, Meghalaya and Nagaland). The percentage and average method were applied to understand the management practices of pig production system. In the qualitative tools mainly Focused Group Discussion (FGD) and Interview methods were used to understand the perception of people on waste management. Result: It is found that the untreated waste is utilized in field and only 2% of farmers use the manure in pisciculture where waste is used in its integrated form. A comprehensive model of treating and marketing the livestock waste and by products with the application of modern technology can not only contribute in augmenting the income but will also help in quality restoration of natural resources in rural areas. Agricultural wastes as an additive within raw earth materials could improve the mechanical and physical properties of new sustainable construction materials and enhance waste management from a circular economy perspective. This study intends to fill the lack of knowledge considering the mechanical effects of animal fibres on rammed-earth materials. The effects of livestock waste, i.e., sheep wool fibre (SWF), as a reinforcing element in building components produced using raw earth and lime-free mortars have been evaluated. The samples were made by varying the wool content (0.25% or 0.50% weight) and the length of the fibres (from 10 mm to 40 mm). Linear shrinkage, flexural strength, compressive strength, and fracture energy were evaluated on samples incorporating SWF, to assess the effects of this waste addition on the mechanical performances of new bio-composite material. The best result of the flexural strength was 1.06 MPa, exhibited by samples made with the longest and highest percentage of fibres, 40 mm, and 0.50%, respectively. Depleting fossil fuel resources such as crude oil and coal are responsible for greenhouse gas emissions and global warming. Hence, converting biogenic waste such as animal waste and agricultural and industrial residues to biogas (CH4 and CO2) using anaerobic digestion (AD) is a sustainable, renewable, and environmentally friendly way of producing fuel. This nature-derived bioconversion process provides energy security and additional environmental services such as waste management. Furthermore, the liquid and solid waste generated through the AD process could be used as soil amendments to increase fertility. However, natural recalcitrance of biomass pertaining to the intricate network of polysaccharides and lignin, high crystallinity of cellulose, and reduced accessible surface area are some of the major bottlenecks to utilizing these resources as received. Pretreatment helps open up the plant cell wall by disrupting the lignin carbohydrate complex, de-lignifying the biomass, aiding the enzymes to access the polysaccharides due to higher surface area efficiently, and hydrolyze them into simple sugars with the help of bacterial consortium during AD process. This review gives an overview of physical, chemical, biological, and combinatorial pretreatment methods of lignocellulosic substrates and their effect on AD process. Biological pretreatment has emerged as a more desirable pretreatment method in terms of environment safety and efficiency for lignin degradation. Though the higher pretreatment duration has been observed as the most significant challenge that need to be addressed for its adoption on commercial scale. Phosphorous and Nitrogen are key nutrients for plants growth, usually supplemented by in the form of fertilizers. Therefore, management and utilization of these compounds in a sustainable manner for agriculture is of importance to serve the rising global demand of food. One way is to valorize agricultural wastes in many different ways like anaerobic digestion, struvite production and so on to maximize nutrient recovery and reduce wastage. Struvite recovery is one of the green marketing tools in the fertilizer industry, given the high amount of agriculture and livestock wastes produced. While struvite can be produced from a wide range of wastewater, this article provides an overview about struvite with an emphasis about its production from anaerobic digestates, manure and livestock wastewater and its prospective as a source of fertilizer. Furthermore, discussions about integration with anaerobic digestion, cost benefits and post application plant yields are reviewed to show its practicality and commercial potential. Despite constraints, struvite production promotes circular bioeconomic, sustainable process with a high nutrient recovery and this review will aid to take decisions in implementing this method in the near future. Agriculture is the economic backbone of Pakistan. 67% of country's population resides in rural areas and primarily depends on agriculture. Pakistan's soils are poor in OM and have a low C : N ratio, and the overall fertility status is insufficient to support increased crop yields. Compost is an excellent alternative solution for improving soil OM content. However, this excellent alternative supply in Pakistan has yet to be used. Mass volumes of leaves, grass clippings, plant stalks, vines, weeds, twigs, and branches are burned daily. In this study, different compost piles (P1, P2, and P3) of compost were made using different agricultural and animal waste combinations to assess temperature, pH, and NPK. Results revealed that P3 demonstrated the most successful composting procedure. The temperature and pH levels throughout the composting process were determined in a specified range of 42–45oC and 6.1–8.3, respectively. Total nitrogen content ranged from 81.5 to 2175 ppm in farm compost. Total phosphorus concentrations range from 1.33 to 13.98 ppm, and potassium levels, on the other hand, range from 91.53 to 640 ppm in farm compost. The overall nitrogen concentration grew progressively between each pile at the end of a week. The varied concentrations revealed that adding various forms of agricultural waste would result in a variation in the quantity of NPK owing to microbial activity. On-farm composting has emerged as an effective technique for the sustainability of agricultural activities, capable of resolving crucial problems like crop residues and livestock waste disposal. Simple Summary: This study evaluated the impacts of incentive and disincentive mechanisms in ensuring environmentally friendly livestock waste management, drawing on a survey of 499 pig farmers from China. An assessment framework was developed and empirically tested using partial least squares structural equation modeling. The findings suggest incentives and disincentives can be effective in ensuring adoption of environmentally friendly livestock waste management practices. However, the disincentive mechanism demonstrated relatively lower interaction values than the incentive mechanism. The survey results indicated that discounts, subsidies, and training provision were the most impactful factors. In summary, the balance and interactions between incentives and disincentives need to be well-planned and managed to strengthen farmers' adoption of environmentally friendly livestock waste management practices. Environmentally friendly waste management (EFWM) is a safer way of waste disposal that can foster a cleaner environment for both farms and their surroundings. It may lessen land, air, and water pollution, as well as moderate ecological footprints, and aid in sustainable agricultural development, which has become one of the major concerns of the modern era. To achieve these outcomes, incentives and control mechanisms initiated by the government may alter farmers' behavior. The study involved a review of relevant literature and the conduct of interviews with 499 pig breeders to evaluate the impacts of government incentives and control mechanisms on fostering the adoption of environmentally friendly waste management practices by farmers. A theoretical framework based on existing studies is proposed, utilizing a structural equation modeling (SEM) approach to analyze the data and illustrate the relationships among incentives and control mechanisms. The results show that: (i) overall the impacts of incentive mechanisms were stronger and more effective than those of control mechanisms. Among them, subsidy policy and discount policy were the most influential for farmers' adoption behavior. However, penalty and disincentive policy also impacted the outcome variables; (ii) a significant relationship was observed among regulatory, disincentive, and subsidy policies and a moderate relationship among penalty, insurance, and discount policies. However, bonus-community service and social critic policies did not show any significant relationship with any other variables. The research findings can assist the Chinese government in gaining a comprehensive understanding of the impacts of two crucial mechanisms and promoting the adoption of environmentally friendly practices by farmers. The government should highlight and strengthen the importance of social obligations and orientation, as well as providing monetary support at the rural level to improve farmers' ability to adapt to environmentally friendly waste management practices. Existing fossil-based commercial products present a significant threat to the depletion of global natural resources and the conservation of the natural environment. Also, the ongoing generation of waste is giving rise to challenges in waste management. Conventional practices for the management of waste, for instance, incineration and landfilling, emit gases that contribute to global warming. Additionally, the need for energy is escalating rapidly due to the growing populace and industrialization. To address this escalating desire in a sustainable manner, access to clean and renewable sources of energy is imperative for long-term development of mankind. These interrelated challenges can be effectively tackled through the scientific application of biowaste-to-bioenergy technologies. The current article states an overview of the strategies and current status of these technologies, including anaerobic digestion, transesterification, photobiological hydrogen production, and alcoholic fermentation which are utilized to convert diverse biowastes such as agricultural and forest residues, animal waste, and municipal waste into bioenergy forms like bioelectricity, biodiesel, bio alcohol, and biogas. Biological conversion of agricultural wastes into animal feed ingredients using larvae of black soldier fly, (Hermetia illucens) is a promising technology that improves the sustainability of agriculture. We designed and tested a prototype automated incubation system for producing black soldier fly larvae. The system consisted of six 50 L plastic bins enclosed on a ventilated metal rack (178 cm high, 66 cm wide). Water was supplied to maintain a moisture level of about 60% in each bin via soaker hoses connected to sensor-activated solenoid valves. The system was successful in maintaining moisture and temperature suitable for larval development and for growing larvae to harvestable size with minimal labor and energy consumption. Biological activity in the bins generated a considerable amount of metabolic heat, most of which was trapped in the substrate in each bin. This heat may be valuable for rearing black soldier fly larvae in areas with cool climates because this species has low tolerance of cold temperatures but challenging in areas with warm climates. In recent years, public attention has been increasingly attracted to solving two inextricably linked problems - preventing the depletion of natural resources and protecting the environment from anthropogenic pollution. The annual consumption of livestock waste for biogas production is about 240 thousand m3 per year, which is 0.17% of the total manure produced at Russian agricultural enterprises. At present, the actual use of organic waste potentially suitable for biogas production is 2–3 orders of magnitude lower than the existing potential for organic waste. Currently, hydrogen energy is gaining immense popularity in the world due to the problem of depletion of non-renewable energy sources - hydrocarbons, and environmental pollution caused by their increasing consumption. Of particular interest is the dark process of producing hydrogen-containing biogas in the processing of organic waste under anaerobic conditions, which allows you to take advantage of both energy production and solving the problem of organic waste disposal. An energy analysis of a two-stage anaerobic liquid organic waste processing system with the production of hydrogen- and methane-containing biogases based on experimental data obtained in a laboratory plant with increased volume reactors was performed. The energy efficiency of the system is in the range of 1.91–2.74. Maximum energy efficiency was observed with a hydraulic retention time of 2.5 days in a dark fermentation reactor. The cost of electricity to produce 1 m3 of hydrogen was 1.093 kW·h with a hydraulic retention time of 2.5 days in the dark fermentation reactor. When the hydraulic retention time in the dark fermentation reactor was 1 day, the specific (in ratio to the processing rate of organic waste) energy costs to produce of 1 m3 of hydrogen were minimal in the considered hrt range, and amounted to 26 (W/m3 of hydrogen)/(m3 of waste/day). Thus, the system of two-stage anaerobic processing of liquid organic waste to produce hydrogen and methane-containing biogases is an energy-efficient way to both produce hydrogen and process organic waste. This paper evaluates the anaerobic digestion of agricultural waste, manure and slaughterhouse residues of species typical of the Andes, such as llama, vicuña and guinea pig; quinoa, amaranth and wheat straw in order to be able to use them as a renewable energy source and boost rural development in the region. Has been used sludge from a WWTP as inoculum, evaluating the effect of two relationships between the substrate and inoculum (RSI) for both livestock and agricultural waste. The highest cumulative maximum methane production rate was obtained for the residues of flame manure and quinoa straw for an RSI of 1:2 with productions of 376.08 ml CH 4 /g SV and 377.02 ml CH 4 /g SV respectively. In these materials an RSI of 1:2 obtained increases of 22.56% and 37.54% compared to the RSI 1:1. Also, the kinetic analysis showed that the modified Gompertz model is the one that best fits performance, with constant differences of 7.06% between the experimental and predicted values. On the other hand, the modified Gompertz model was adjusted to the experimental results with an r2 of (0.998) and an RMSE of 4.09 ml/g SV at 17.12 ml/g SV. • The addition of an inoculum increased the rate of methane and biogas production. • The camelid manure generated methane yields between 235.49 and 377.02 ml CH 4 /g VS. • The three and four parameter sigmoid prediction models better estimated the BMP tests. • Flame manure residues provided 70.74% biodegradability results. Humans increase the limited number of daylight hours available to them by using artificial light at night (ALAN) to improve their ability to continue functioning under light conditions. Several studies found that ALAN has multiple impacts on wildlife, and even humans. We examined whether the prey of striped hyenas (Hyaena hyaena), a commensal of human-altered areas, has adapted to this change in the natural environment. We collected prey remains in 12 different dens during 20 breeding attempts between 1993 and 2022. Our analysis shows that ALAN had no impact on diet or den distribution in central Israel. We were able to identify 654 prey items from 49 species in the dens. We divided the species into five main groups: domestic animals (11 species), wild mammals (19), reptiles (3), and birds (17). Domestic animals were the most numerous in the diet. We also found vegetative species, mainly fruits and vegetables, of 10 species in the dens. In conclusion, our study shows that the plasticity of striped hyena feeding behavior, which may vary depending on geographical region and habitat, and is influenced by human and livestock waste disposal. Their respectful behavior and tolerance of human disturbance make the striped hyena an exceptional carnivore, providing ecosystem services. Anaerobic biodigesters play a crucial role in enhancing animal waste management. However, the presence of pathogens in the biodigestion process poses a significant concern. Candida spp., a widespread fungus known for its opportunistic nature and adaptability to diverse environmental conditions, including reciprocal transmission between humans and animals, is one such pathogen of concern. Therefore, it is imperative to assess the virulence profile of Candida spp. originating from anaerobic biodigestion processes. Here we demonstrate that strains isolated from the biodigestion process of dairy cattle waste exhibit noteworthy virulence mechanisms, surpassing the virulence of clinical control strains. After we identified strains from affluent, effluent, and biofertilizer, we observed that all analyzed isolates produced biofilm. Additionally, a substantial proportion of these isolates demonstrated phospholipase production, while only a few strains exhibited protease production. Furthermore, all strains exhibited resistance or dose-dependent responses to amphotericin B and itraconazole, with the majority displaying resistance to fluconazole. In the in vivo test, we observed a significant correlation (p < 0.05) between the LT50 and biofilm formation as well as hyphae/pseudohyphae production. Additionally, some isolates demonstrated a quicker nematode-killing capacity compared to clinical controls. Our findings underscore the considerable pathogenic potential of certain Candida species present in the dynamics of anaerobic biodigestion. Importantly, the anaerobic biodigester system did not eliminate Candida strains from dairy cattle waste, highlighting the need for caution in utilizing biodigester products. We advocate for further studies to explore the virulence of other microorganisms in various animal production contexts. The attempt to improve protein consumption among Nigerians through increase in livestock production has led to an upward trend in the quantity of waste generated in recent years. In this study we examined the perceived effect of livestock waste on the wellbeing of farm workers and residents within farm catchment area in Oyo State. A multistage sampling technique was used to select 148 respondents for the study. Data were obtained using a structured interview schedule and analysed using descriptive statistics, namely frequency, percentages and t-test. The data revealed that 34.5 % of respondents fell in the age range of 21–30 years. Most (68.9 %) of them were males and 56.8 % had tertiary education. Majority (56.1 %) had a poultry flock size ranging from 1,001 to 10,000 birds, 67 % had piggery herd size ranging between 101 and 500 with 57.3 % of livestock farms situated within farm settlements. The respondents generated more of cracked eggs, manure and litters as wastes. Forty-seven percent of the respondents utilised disinfection and 40.0 % used treatment of feeds as the major waste management practices whereas biomass production was least used (5 %). Closing of windows early was the major indicated coping strategy for disturbances from waste. Significant difference exists between residents' and farm workers' perception of livestock wastes on their wellbeing in the study area (t = 3.693, P = 0.000). Farm workers and residents perceived the effect of livestock waste on their wellbeing to be low. Wellbeing of residents was more affected with livestock waste than that of workers. The nitrogen isotope compositions of charred wheat and barley grains reflect manuring intensity and have been used to reconstruct past manuring practices at archaeological sites across Europe and western Asia. To assess whether this analytical method can be applied to a staple crop in the West African Sahel, the nitrogen isotope values of Pennisetum glaucum grains in this region were determined and the effect of charring ascertained. Pennisetum glaucum ears were collected from fields in northeast Senegal, where the fertilisation histories of the plots (manure and/or household waste) were known. The nitrogen isotope values of these millet grains provide an insight into the values to expect for P. glaucum grains grown with low to moderate addition of manure/household waste in a semi-arid climate. Charring of P. glaucum grains by heating at 215–260 °C for 4–24 h increases their nitrogen isotope values by a maximum of 0.34‰. In light of these modern data, the nitrogen isotope values of millet grains recovered from the archaeological settlement mound of Tongo Maaré Diabal, Mali, can be interpreted as evidence for modest levels of manure/household waste input throughout the occupation of the site from cal ad 500–1150. The insufficiency of waste treatment capacity is a considerable challenge that must be solved by cultivating concern for waste problems. Correspondingly, this research investigated waste separation behavior (WSB) in rural Vietnam, specifically among 298 rural and semi-rural households, which were divided into livestock and non-livestock groups on the basis of livelihood. The study's objectives were to identify differences in WSB and waste separation performance between these groups using an independent samples t -test and to introduce new WSB-related constructs associated with the theory of planned behavior (TPB). The constructs, namely, awareness, perception, and socioeconomic factors (the ownership of a garden, the number of pigs and chickens raised, and the money saved from using waste), were incorporated into multiple regression models of the household groups. Results showed that the livestock group exhibits more positive attitudes toward waste separation, greater concern for subjective norms, a stronger awareness of the negative effects of waste, a more well-developed perception of the encouragement of waste separation, and higher waste separation performance than does the non-livestock group (p < 0.01). The multiple regression analyses indicated that the presence of a garden—a feature characteristic of rural areas in Vietnam—is a very significant and powerful factor that affects the locals' waste separation habits (p < 0.01). This finding is attributed to the fact that gardens are convenient places for disposing of waste. Another determinant of waste separation performance in the entire community is trust in the waste management capabilities and policies of local authorities. In the livestock group, all the proposed socioeconomic factors are significantly correlated with WSB (p < 0.01). In particular, households engaged in small-scale livestock farming present potential to initiate waste separation given the tendency of families who rear a few chickens to use waste as animal feed (β = −0.157, p < 0.01). Win–win outcomes are achieved by the livestock group when they segregate waste and use it as livestock feed. Thousands of marabou storks occupy Kampala, nesting in the city's green spaces and eating up to 2 kilos of organic matter daily, mostly rotting garbage found in the city's open dumps. Weedy birds, they flourish amid Kampala's garbage crisis. Storks are both waste infrastructure and waste themselves, rendered disposable by the same state-centric views of infrastructure that make informal waste pickers precarious, and cast out from the imaginary of a clean, green, urban future. Theorizing animal and informal infrastructures together as "para-sites," this paper follows marabou storks through Kampala's ever-shifting waste frontier: the postconsumer equivalent to the extractive frontier that subtends the capitalist fantasy of endless growth. Kampala's topography, hydrology, and class structure ensure that trash flows downhill, accumulating in slums where it leads to flooding and outbreaks of cholera, typhoid, and other waterborne illnesses as well as to endemic malaria. Waste with wings, marabou storks remake the urban waste landscape, undermining efforts to stabilize the city's ultimate sinks in landfills, slums, and wetlands as they flourish in filth and defecate in the heart of greenness. Sustainable development depends on the availability of energy resources and their impact on environment. Biogas is a carbon neutral renewable energy option and one of the leading solutions to the climate change combat. As Turkey is an energy importer country, using indigenous energy sources is vital to meet future energy demand. Agricultural activities and livestock potential have high contribution to economy in Turkey. Biogas production from organic wastes such as livestock manure in this context, gain more importance to contribute both renewable energy production and waste management strategies. Livestock farming has important economic value in Burdur. In this regard, the animal manure based biogas potential, energy value, electricity and organic fertilizer generation capacity of Burdur Province were determined in this study. The results revealed that Burdur has annually 1.45 million tons of available animal manure potential to be used for biogas production of 27.1 million m³/year. This potential corresponds to 135.4 GWh annual energy generation that could be converted to heat and electricity. Considerable amount of the biogas production capacity has accumulated in the Center and, Bucak, Yeşilova, Gölhisar and Karamanlı districts of Burdur. Abstract The implementation of waste to energy technology such as the production of biogas from animal waste has been considered as one of the best means to achieve sustainable energy development goals in many developing countries including Indonesia. In the past several years, the rapid increment in the number of animal husbandries in Indonesia could potentially provide a considerable amount of feedstock for the generation of biogas. Therefore, this article is aimed at highlighting the potential application of waste to energy technology via the production of biogas from animal waste as an alternative source of power generation in Indonesia. Here, Indonesia's energy mix and several issues regarding waste management is comprehensively reviewed. Additionally, this article also discusses the current status in Indonesia's energy generation from new and renewable resources, especially from waste. Hence, several key technologies on how to utilize waste for power generation are presented. Based on the analyses, numerous opportunities could be explored in terms of turning animal waste to energy by biogas production in Indonesia. It is estimated that about 9597.4 Mm3/year of biogas could potentially be generated from animal waste in Indonesia. This large amount of biogas production could be utilized to generate electric power up to 1.7 × 106 KWh/year. Finally, this paper also highlights several main challenges faced in the implementation of large-scale biogas production in Indonesia. This study explored dog guardian behaviors and self-reported perceptions regarding the disposal of dog waste on Open Space and Mountain Parks (OSMP) lands in Boulder, Colorado, in an effort to increase compliance with proper disposal practices. We utilized direct observations of dog owners and their behaviors regarding pet waste, and separate self-reported surveys to examine dog owners' perceptions of waste disposal on OSMP lands. The Theory of Planned Behavior served as a framework to explore how dog owners' attitudes, norms, and perceived behavioral control might influence behavioral intentions, as well as self-reported current behavior, regarding the disposal of pet waste on OSMP lands. Finally, this study explored potential management techniques that may influence dog owners to properly dispose of waste on OSMP lands in the future. Data were collected across 10 sites, for total of n=541 observations and n=386 surveys. Canine defecation and human behavioral response occurred n=102 times during the n=541 observations, and overall 73.5% of dog owners properly (i.e., bag waste and immediately take all bags) disposed of waste. Without considering immediate disposal in a trash or compost receptacle, owners with dogs on-leash were significantly more likely to bag their pets' waste than owners with dogs off-leash. When both bagging waste and immediately disposing of waste in a waste or compost receptacle are considered, owners with dogs on-leash had a tendency (~11% more likely) to bag and immediately take pet waste for disposal. Perceived behavioral control was the construct that most significantly correlated with behavioral intent regarding proper disposal of dog waste. Many respondents reported that additional trash or compost receptacles and bag dispensers along trails would make them more likely to follow recommended practices related to the disposal of pet waste in the future. These results suggest that management should consider the following: designating more on-leash-only sites because compliance is substantially higher when dogs are on-leash; establishing on-leash segments along the first quarter of a mile from all trailheads; installing an additional trash and/or compost receptacle and bag dispenser, specifically one quarter of a mile from the trailheads. Pairing these with educational strategies that inform pet owners to not leave bagged pet waste for later disposal, while highlighting the ease of immediately bagging waste and carrying it to a trash or compost receptacle may further increase compliance. Agricultural intensification can lead to high volumes of livestock faeces being applied to land, either as solid or liquid manures or via direct defecation, and can result in reservoirs of faecal indicator organisms (FIOs) persisting within farmland. Understanding the survival of FIOs, e.g. E. coli , in agricultural environments, and in particular within different livestock faeces, is key to developing catchment management practices for the protection of ecosystem services provided by clean water. Frequently, controlled laboratory studies, under constant temperature regimes, are used to determine the impact of environmental factors on E. coli persistence in livestock faeces; however, such studies oversimplify the diurnal variations and interactions of real world conditions. The aim of this study was to investigate the survival of E. coli using a controlled environment facility, which simulated diurnal variation of temperatures typically experienced during a British spring and summer. The approach provided a comparison of E. coli persistence profiles within faeces of sheep, beef cattle and dairy cattle to allow novel interpretations of E. coli regrowth patterns in contrasting livestock faeces in the period immediately post-defecation. Thus, the coupling of a tightly controlled environment facility with high resolution monitoring enabled the development of a new non-linear, asymptotic description of E. coli proliferation in livestock faeces, with increased potential for E. coli growth observed during warmer temperatures for all livestock types. Diarrhea is still one of community health problems in the world, especially in developing countries such as Indonesia, because of its high morbidity and mortality rates. This study aimed to know the relationship between the density of flies and livestock waste management with the incidence of diarrhea in the community dairy farmers. This study used a descriptive analytic with cross sectional study design. Data was collected using questionnaires, observation sheets, and measurements of the density of flies with a fly method grill and hand counter. Sample research used is as many as 177 family dairy farmers with the sampling method of cluster random sampling. The results of Chi Square test showed a significant relationship between the density of flies with the incidence of diarrhea (p= 0.00) and the existence of a significant relationship between livestock waste management with the incidence of diarrhea (p= 0.00). The aim of this study was to assess the biogas production generated by the anaerobic co-digestion of two co-substrates—liquid cheese whey (LCW) and beef cattle waste (BCW)—mixed with the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) and inoculated with either granular or suspended sludge. At the end of co-digestion, a high biogas yield was observed for the granular sludge mixture of OFMSW and BCW, which provides support for beef cattle waste as a promising substrate for biogas production. The mixture of OFMSW and LCW resulted in an enhancement of biogas production compared to OFMSW alone; however, the characteristics of LCW led to instability during the process. The key finding was that the type of sludge used influences the biogas production of the mixture. For the two sludges tested, the reactors containing granular sludge produced more biogas than those with suspended sludge. Reactors inoculated with a granular sludge produced 70% more biogas with the mixture of OFMSW and BCW compared to those with the suspended sludge. Abstract The irradiation of rumen fluid (RF) with laser source was hypothesized to enhance the anaerobic process and accelerate the manure digestion, which increases the biogas and methane production. The photobiostimulating effects of laser irradiation on biogas and methane production were investigated by irradiating the RF for 0.5, 1 and 2 h with 532 nm laser source compared with 1 h incandescent light, non-irradiated RF and the control. The highest significant values of the biogas and methane production were found to be 583 ml Biogas g−1 VS and 367.9 ml CH 4 g−1 VS when RF was irradiated for 0.5 h with 532 nm laser source (p < 0.05) compared with the other irradiation times with laser, incandescent light source, non-irradiated RF, and the control which yielded only 357 ml Biogas g−1 VS and 196 ml CH 4 g−1 VS, respectively. Moreover, the biogas and methane production rates were found to be inversely proportional with the irradiation time using laser source. The results showed that the lag phase was reduced from 4 days to 1 day. Additionally, the time to achieve the highest biogas production (peak) was reduced from day 28 to day 16 of the Hydraulic Retention Time (HRT) compared with the control. Continuous growth in global energy demand, depletion of fossil resources and climate change concerns associated with fossil fuel combustion have increased the motivation on utilization of renewable energy sources. Utilization of renewable sources is vital in Turkey as the country highly depends on imported energy. Biogas is a renewable energy resource produced from decomposing organic waste under anaerobic conditions. Production of biogas from organic wastes such as animal manure is advantageous to contribute renewable energy production and waste management strategies for health and environmental protection. In this study, the animal manure based biogas energy potential of the Mediterranean Region of Turkey is determined. The region is composed of eight provinces including Antalya, Burdur, Isparta, Mersin, Adana, Hatay, Osmaniye and Kahramanmaraş. The results revealed that Mediterranean Region has 183 Mm3 annual biogas potential corresponding to 0.08 MTOE/year energy generation capacity. Codigestion of agricultural residues can contribute to about 0.208 MTOE/year energy generation. It is determined that biogas production can contribute reduction of carbon footprint by 1.7 million tons of annual CO2 emissions. Mersin Province has shown the highest biogas potential in the region. Biochemical quantitative characterization of biomass is becoming of key importance with the awareness and implementation of the fourth industrial revolution (FIR) and specifically in waste to energy recovery technologies. In this study, we investigated the quantification, characterization and anaerobic digestion of organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW), sewage sludge, animal manure and agricultural waste as a substrate for potential alternative clean fuel production to meet the ever-rising energy demand. The basis of comparison included ultimate analysis and proximate analysis for better understanding of the characteristic of biomass for waste to energy application. Existing quantitative and characterization methods for physical and chemical properties were analyzed and reviewed using collected samples. The substrates analysis showed physio-chemical properties of significant energy value, like that of natural gas. Biochemical methane potential test (BMP) showed high feasibility for methane production with mono and co-digestion of animal waste, sewage sludge, OFMSW and agriculture waste. The results of the quantitative characterization and BMP test would contribute to affordable, sustainable, reliable, carbon-neutral form of modern energy and development of adequate waste to energy recovery management strategies. The amount of organic residue and waste in China and their uncertainties have not been quantitatively analysed, due to the lack of reliable data and proper quantification tools. Here we quantified the changes of crop residue and livestock manure in Chinese agriculture from 1978 to 2014, using coefficients collected from literature and a large statistical dataset. The uncertainties were tested using Monte Carlo model. The results showed that 819 megatons (Mt) of crop residue and 551 Mt of manure (dry weight base) were generated in 2014, which contained 25.3, 5.2 and 19.4 Mt of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K), respectively. Of these total amounts, 179.7 Mt of manure (32.9% of the total manure) and 212.9 Mt of crop residue (26.0% of the total residue) could be possibly used as composting feedstock. Our scenario analysis showed that up to 38% of manure from pig and dairy farm could be directly recycled to the field in 2020. Meanwhile, 85% of crop residue would be recycled to use, which implied that the proportion of agricultural organic residue and waste as compost feedstock could decline. Future recycling for organic waste through composting industry should be strengthened in the regions with high manure load, together with commercial regulation to redistribute compost product, with the sustainable and environmental aims. Volatile emissions from decomposing animal waste are known environmental pollutants. The black soldier fly, Hermetia illucens (L.), is being evaluated for industrialization as a means to recycle wastes and produce protein for use as food and feed. We examined the ability of black soldier fly larvae to reduce odorous compounds associated with animal wastes. Black soldier fly larvae were reared under laboratory conditions on poultry, swine, and dairy manure at feed rates of 18.0 and 27.0 g every other day until 40% reached the prepupal stage. Volatile emissions were collected and analyzed from freshly thawed as well as the digested waste when 90% of the black soldier fly larvae reached the prepupal stage. Volatiles were also collected simultaneously from manure not inoculated with black soldier fly larvae (non-digested) and held under similar conditions. Manure samples were analyzed for relative amounts of nine select odorous volatile organic compounds: phenol, 4-methylphenol, indole, 3-methylindole, propanoic acid, 2-methylpropanoic acid, butanoic acid, 3-methylbutanoic acid and pentanoic acid. Black soldier fly larvae reduced emissions of all volatile organic compounds by 87% or greater. Complete reductions were observed for 2-methly propanoic acid in digested poultry manure, phenol, 4-methylphenol, indole and all five fatty acids in digested swine manure, and 4-methylphenol, indole, 3-methylindole and all five acids in digested dairy manure. This study is the first to identify volatile emissions from manure digested by black soldier fly larvae and compare to those found in non-digested manure. These data demonstrate additional benefits of using black soldier fly larvae as a cost-effective and environmentally friendly means of livestock manure management in comparison to current methods. The different organic matter fractions of residues significantly impact the degradability of organic material in composting windrows. Based on that, this study aimed to find out the organic matter fractions that most impact the breakdown rate during composting, besides proposing models to estimate the solids reductions in sheep bedding composting windrows. To that end, 24 sheep beddings from different locations and varied composition were composted so as to ensure the representativeness of the sample. The models found for reduction in total (TS) and volatile (VS) solids as a function of compostable organic matter (COM) and organic matter resistant to composting (OMRC) were not significant. Lignin had correlation coefficients of −0.6, −0.89, and −0.84 in relation to temperature, TS reduction, and VS reduction, respectively. The hemicellulose:lignin ratio was the parameter most correlated with temperature (0.69), TS reduction (0.91), VS reduction (0.92), and nitrogen (0.5), which led to more significant predictive models. It can be concluded that the hemicellulose:lignin ratio is the parameter that most impacts the breakdown of organic matter and nitrogen losses in sheep bedding composting windrows. Increasing pressures on the animal and cropland agriculture sectors have led to the realization of problems with animal waste management and ammonia-based fertilizer supply. Bioelectrochemical systems (BES) are a new-age technology that offer a way to address these problems. Microbial fuel cells (MFCs), one type of BES, are traditionally used for electricity generation from microbial degradation of organic matters, but can also be used to recover nutrients from wastes simultaneous with treatment. This research investigated an MFC for ammonia recovery from the organic nitrogen (orgN) fraction of synthetic dairy manure, using the simple amino acid glycine as the orgN source. We used five different synthetic manure compositions to determine their effects on MFC performance, and found minimal sacrifices in performance under orgN conditions when compared to the base condition without orgN. The MFC achieved greater than 90% COD removal in all orgN conditions. Nitrogen (N) removal efficiencies of between 40% and 60% were achieved in orgN conditions, indicating that organic nitrogen can be used as the substrate for ammonia mineralization and further recovery as fertilizer. In addition, we found the MFC was largely populated by electrogenic organisms from the phyla Bacteroidota, Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, and Halobacterota, with organisms in both Bacteroidota and Firmicutes capable of N mineralization present. Lastly, we found that in conditions where orgN is scarce and the only N source provided, microbes preferentially degraded organic matter from other dead organisms, especially as an N source. This increases the concentration of N in the MFC system and introduces important operational constraints for MFCs operated for ammonia recovery from orgN. The mother earth is a source of natural resources that, in conjunction with anthropogenic activities, generates a wide spectrum of different biowastes. These biomaterials can be used as low-cost raw feedstock to produce bioenergy, value-added products, and other commodities. However, the improper management and disposal of these biowastes can generate relevant environmental impacts. Consequently, it is imperative to explore alternative technologies for the valorization and exploitation of these wastes to obtain benefits for the society. This review covers different aspects related to valorization of biowastes and their applications in water pollution, soil fertility and green energy generation. The classification and characteristics of different biowastes (biosolids, animal wastes and effluents, plant biomass, wood and green wastes) including their main generation sources are discussed. Different technologies (e.g., pyrolysis, hydrothermal carbonization, anaerobic digestion, gasification, biodrying) for the transformation and valorization of these residues are also analyzed. The application of biowastes in soil fertility, environmental pollution and energy production are described and illustrative examples are provided. Finally, the challenges related to implement low-cost and sustainable biowaste management strategies are highlighted. It was concluded that reliable simulation studies are required to optimize all the logistic stages of management chain of these residues considering the constraints generated from the economic, environmental and social aspects of the biowaste generation sources and their locations. The recollection and sorting of biowastes are key parameters to minimize the costs associated to their management and valorization. Also, the concepts of Industry 4.0 can contribute to achieve a successful commercial production of the value-added products obtained from the biowaste valorization. The utilization of industrial waste streams as input materials for bio-mediated production processes constitutes a current R&D objective not only to reduce process costs at the input side but in parallel, to minimize hazardous environmental emissions. In this context, the EU-funded project ANIMPOL elaborated a process for the production of polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) biopolymers starting from diverse waste streams of the animal processing industry. This article provides a detailed economic analysis of PHA production from this waste biorefinery concept, encompassing the utilization of low-quality biodiesel, offal material and meat and bone meal (MBM). Techno-economic analysis reveals that PHA production cost varies from 1.41 €/kg to 1.64 €/kg when considering offal on the one hand as waste, or, on the other hand, accounting its market price, while calculating with fixed costs for the co-products biodiesel (0.97 €/L) and MBM (350 €/t), respectively. The effect of fluctuating market prices for offal materials, biodiesel, and MBM on the final PHA production cost as well as the investment payback time have been evaluated. Aim: Present investigation was conducted to isolate and characterize bacteriophages with lytic activity against common bacterial pathogens. Materials and Methods: A total of 60 samples of animal waste disposal from cattle (42) and buffalo (18) farms were collected from three different strata, i.e., top, mid and bottom of collection tank. Samples were primarily subjected to rapid detection methods and then isolation of phage was done by double agar layer method using Bacillus subtilis (BsH) and Escherichia coli (EH) as host system. Phages were characterized on the basis of plaque morphology, temperature, pH susceptibility and host range. Results: Recovery of phages was higher from dairy cattle farm waste (78.57%) as compared to buffalo farm waste (72.22%) and bottom layer of tank showed maximum recovery. Bacillus subtilis (91%) supported the growth of more phages as compared to E. coli (9%). Three different phage morphotypes were observed each against Bacillus subtilis (BsHR1, BsHR2 and BsHR3) and E. coli (EHR1, EHR2 and EHR3). Mean phage titer of above six phage isolates ranged between 3x1010 and 5x1012 plaque forming units/ml. Viability of phages was by, and large unaffected at 70°C within 2-3 min and phage isolates were completely inactivated below pH 3 and above 11. Coliphage EHR1 had widest host range followed by BsHR1 and BsHR2 while EHR2, EHR3 and BsHR3 had low lytic activity. Conclusion: It could be concluded from the present study that the Bacillus and Coli phage has wide host range and thus exhibits the potential to be used as drug substitute tool against common bacterial pathogens. This paper aims to study the impact of biogas technology adoption as a livestock waste technology to support Mixed Crop and Livestock (MCL) farming among smallholder farmers in Indonesia. A cross sectional survey was conducted to collect data from 351 farm households (171 biogas adopters and 180 non-adopters) in the province of Yogyakarta. This study employed treatment effects analysis based on propensity score matching techniques to evaluate the impacts of biogas technology adoption among the farm households. The results showed that the adoption of the biogas technology reduces firewood consumption of smallholder farm households in Indonesia. Unfortunately, the impact on the use of slurry for organic fertilizers and the use of gas ( Liquid Petroleum Gas , LPG ) as another household cooking energy could not be evaluated. This study empirically showed that the benefits of the biogas technology had not yet been optimized at the household level which may partly explain the slow rate of biogas technology diffusion among farmers. However, the consumption reduction of firewood as a benefit of using biogas contributed to behavioral changes of the women in the households especially with respect to firewood collection and cooking activities. Information regarding the disposal of on-farm poultry wastes (manure, litter and dead birds) and the effects of poultry waste disposal on environmental quality was investigated in this study. Variability in the Physico-chemical properties of soils affected by poultry wastes were investigated on disposal area is 7m X 7m. Six soil sample were collected near and away from the poultry waste disposal site and the each soil sampling pit is divided into three layers of size vertical depth 0-30cm, 30-60cm, and 60-90cm respectively. Using standard methods the variations in quality of soil samples i.e., Physico-Chemical properties such as bulk density, moisture content, pH value, hydraulic conductivity, temperature and porosity has been analyzed. The bulk density is between 1.5 to 1.7g/cm³ and the porosity is between 0.43 to 0.36 which conclude the soil type is sandy soil. The variations in quality of soil samples are good and safe when compared with standard values. Global meat consumption is on a rise with around 253 million metric tons of meat produced globally in the year 2020. Because of the rise in population and change in food preferences, meat consumption trend is likely to continue. Meat production by animal slaughtering increases the slaughterhouse wastes in the form of both solid and liquid wastes. Although various technologies for slaughterhouse waste management are available in developed countries, the effective utilization of slaughterhouse waste management is still missing in developing countries like India. India plays an active role in the meat export business globally and stood 2nd in the world with a total export valuation of 2.89 billion US $ in the year 2020. In this context, this study presents a critical overview of the current technological advancements in the global slaughterhouse waste management including utilization of by-products and further, the prevailing slaughterhouse waste management of India is discussed. Next generation of waste management systems should apply product-oriented bioconversion processes that produce composts or biofertilisers of desired quality that can be sold in high priced markets such as horticulture. Natural acidification linked to nitrification can be promoted during composting. If nitrification is enhanced, suitable compost in terms of pH can be obtained for use in horticultural substrates. Green waste compost (GW) represents a potential suitable product for use in growing medium mixtures. However its low N provides very limited slow-release nitrogen fertilization for suitable plant growth; and GW should be composted with a complementary N-rich raw material such as the solid fraction of cattle slurry (SFCS). Therefore, it is important to determine how very different or extreme proportions of the two materials in the mixture can limit or otherwise affect the nitrification process. The objectives of this work were two-fold: (a) To assess the changes in chemical and physicochemical parameters during the prolonged composting of extreme mixtures of green waste (GW) and separated cattle slurry (SFCS) and the feasibility of using the composts as growing media. (b) To check for nitrification during composting in two different extreme mixtures of GW and SFCS and to describe the conditions under which this process can be maintained and its consequences. The physical and physicochemical properties of both composts obtained indicated that they were appropriate for use as ingredients in horticultural substrates. The nitrification process occurred in both mixtures in the medium-late thermophilic stage of the composting process. In particular, its feasibility has been demonstrated in the mixtures with a low N content. Nitrification led to the inversion of each mixture’s initial pH. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Land application of swine manure in commercial hog farms is an integral part of their waste management system which recycles the nutrients back to the soil. However, manure application can lead to the dissemination of bacterial pathogens in the environment and pose a serious public health threat. The aim of this study was to determine the dissemination of antimicrobial resistant Salmonella in the environment due to manure application in commercial swine farms in North Carolina (n = 6) and Iowa (n = 7), two leading pork producing states in the US. We collected manure and soil samples twice on day 0 (before and after manure application) from four distinct plots of lands (5 soil samples/plot) located at 20 feet away from each other in the field. Subsequent soil samples were collected again on days 7, 14, 21 from the same plots. A total of 1,300 soil samples (NC = 600; IA = 700) and 130 manure samples (NC = 60; IA = 70) were collected and analyzed in this study. The overall Salmonella prevalence was 13.22% (189/1,430), represented by 10.69% and 38.46% prevalence in soil and manure, respectively. The prevalence in NC (25.45%) was significantly higher than in IA (2.73%) (P<0.001) and a consistent decrease in Salmonella prevalence was detected from Day 0-Day 21 in all the farms that tested positive. Salmonella serotypes detected in NC were not detected in IA, thereby highlighting serotype association based on manure storage and soil application method used in the two regions. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was done by the broth microdilution method to a panel of 15 antimicrobial drugs. A high frequency of isolates (58.73%) were multidrug resistant (resistance to three or more class of antimicrobials) and the most frequent resistance was detected against streptomycin (88.36%), sulfisoxazole (67.2%), and tetracycline (57.67%). Genotypic characterization by pulse field gel electrophoresis revealed clonally related Salmonella in both manure and soil at multiple time points in the positive farms. Mink farming is a well-established economic activity with a significant environmental footprint. In this work mink farming derived organic waste was assessed, for the first time, as substrate to anaerobic digestion plants. The substrates assessed were; (a)fresh mink manures, (b)weathered mink manures, (c)waste feed and (d)mink derived meat and bone meal. Substrates with in inoculum to substrate ratio of 2 offered specific methane productions ranging between 368 and 591 mLCH 4 /gVS added corresponding to 67.4 and 91.1% of their theoretical methane potential. In the second phase of the experiments three organic loading rates and three inoculum to substrate ratios were assessed. Substrate/inoculum ratios, in batch mode, lower than 1 seem to affect negatively the process, due to slow hydrolysis and acetogenesis of the macromolecules. In addition, initial organic loading rates of up to 50 gVS/L can be applied in batch systems when manure is utilized as substrate. In contrast to this, when mink derived byproducts are used the same loading rate will result into an irreversible process inhibition due to the accumulation of intermediate products. Ammonia (NH3) emissions from animal manure are a significant environmental and public concern. Despite the numerous studies regarding NH3 emissions from manure, few of them have considered microbial nitrification approaches, especially fungal nitrification. In this study, a filamentous fungus was isolated from chicken manure and was used for nitrification. The species was Paecilomyces variotii by morphological characteristics and 18S rDNA gene sequencing. It played the biggest role in the removal of ammonium at pH 4.0–7.0, C/N ratio of 10–40, temperature of 25–37°C, shaking speed of 150 rpm, and with glucose as the available carbon source. Further analysis revealed that all ammonium was removed when the initial ammonium concentration was less than 100 mg/L; 40% ammonium was removed when the initial ammonium concentration was 1100 mg/L. The results showed that the concentration of ammonia from chicken manure with strain Paecilomyces variotii was significantly lower than that in the control group. We concluded that Paecilomyces variotii has good potential for future applications in in situ ammonium removal as well as ammonia emissions control from poultry manure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
