Volcanic islands represent the later stage of an early submarine volcanic activity and show different morphologies reflecting the geometry of shallow plumbing systems, magma output rate, gravitational instability, and erosive phases. Two end‐member morphologies may be recognized: (a) rift‐like elongated edifices and 'stellate' volcanoes and (b) cone‐shaped, central‐type volcanoes. While the evolution from early conical shapes to stellate shapes is relatively well known, the reverse is less constrained, commonly lacking geophysical and geological data to support it. We present magnetic forward and 3‐D inverse models of the volcanic island of Salina (244‐15 ka; Aeolian Arc, Southern Tyrrhenian Sea) to characterize its shallow plumbing system. The detected magnetic sources are interpreted as the crystallized portions of dykes and vertical conduits. The dykes mainly characterize the offshore of Salina Island, whereas subcircular conduits are located onshore. The results show that the early, mainly submarine phases of Salina concentrated along dykes following weakness zones of tectonic significance. As the volcanism proceeded, the subaerial activity focused on two main cone‐shaped stratovolcanoes (Monte Fossa delle Felci and Monte dei Porri). The intersections among dykes and the progressive loading of volcanic products during the early growth of Salina are responsible for the transition from an early fissural basaltic activity to a later, basaltic to a last, more evolved central‐type volcanism. We conclude that intrusions along pre‐existing tectonic structures, dyke intersections, and loading processes related to the formation of a volcanic pile regulate the morphology and structural evolution of volcanic islands from the early, submarine phase to the later subaerial activity. The volcanic activity that built up the Monte dei Porri stratocone (Salina Island) was reconstructed using new stratigraphic data, which allowed seven eruption units to be distinguished. Alternating Strombolian/Vulcanian to sub-Plinian/Plinian explosive and effusive activity emplaced fall and pyroclastic density current deposits and lava flows that formed the volcanic cone. The minimum erupted bulk volumes were assessed at 100 × 10 6 m 3 each for EU1, EU2, EU3 and EU6, while that of EU4 is ca. 200 × 10 6 m 3 . Rough estimation of EU7 volume yields values around 150 × 10 6 m 3 . The calculation of volume was not possible for the EU5 deposits. The magmas that fed the different eruption units of the Monte dei Porri succession range in composition from basalt to andesite, with the exception of dacites erupted in the initial phase of activity. SEM image analyses on coarse ash from the different pyroclastic units suggest that hydromagmatic fragmentation cannot be the cause of the large variations in explosivity observed throughout the stratigraphic succession. Based on the lithic component of pyroclastic deposits and xenolith contents of lava flows, the plumbing system that fed the different eruption units of Monte dei Porri was split into a deep magma storage level (15–20 km) and shallower magma batches (3–5 km). Our calculations indicate that the volumes of erupted material can account for magmatic triggering (injection of new magma) of eruptive units from the shallower feeding system, but they are not sufficient for suggesting magmatic initiation of the eruption units from the deeper feeding system. It is therefore assumed that the eruptions from the deep magma reservoir necessitate a favourable lithostatic stress, likely calling for a reduction of the local tectonic forces. A qualitative model explaining the eruptive style transitions among and within the different eruption units is presented, taking into account the relation between magmatic overpressure and lithostatic stress. Abstract: A rock-magnetic investigation was carried out on the nonwelded ash deposits of the Brown Tuffs (Aeolian Islands, southern Tyrrhenian Sea) to improve the stratigraphic correlation between the deposits cropping out on Lipari and Vulcano islands and locate their source area. The study was supplemented by petrographical and geochemical analyses on selected strata, with the intent to compare the Brown Tuffs to other rocks emplaced at Vulcano in the same time span. More than 30 levels were sampled in the intermediate (56±4ka>IBT>21–22ka) and upper (21–22ka>UBT) parts of the Brown Tuffs sequences on the two islands. Their characteristic remanent magnetization (ChRM) directions were derived from stepwise thermal demagnetization, and the magnetic fabric from measurements of the anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility. The levels with indistinguishable ChRM directions were regarded as coeval and to form an individual stratigraphic unit. The units were referred to the Brown Tuffs sequence of on the grounds of their emplacement age, provided by comparison of their mean paleomagnetic direction with the paleosecular variation curves of the southern Tyrrhenian region, as well as the field constraints. The closer correlation between the sequences of Lipari and Vulcano contributes to a better understanding of the volcanic activity that produced the Brown Tuffs, and shows that most of the IBT and the oldest UBT levels were emplaced in a short time span, between ≈24 and 20–17ka. The magnetic fabric is typically well developed, but at most sites the magnetic foliation is very close to horizontal and no imbrication is defined. The source area of the Brown Tuffs parent pyroclastic flows, as constrained from the intersection of the magnetic lineations, falls in the northeastern part of La Fossa Caldera structure. Although limited to major elements, compositional data provide further indication about the parent plumbing system and its behaviour. Magma batch(es) involved in the IBT eruptions have homogeneous features and underwent frequent refilling and tapping processes. Conversely, those involved in the early UBT eruptions are compositionally more variable. This suggests more complex evolution and plumbing system activity: the UBT eruptions represent either residual mafic magmas from the previous eruptions or the arrival of new, fresh shoshonitic magma in the system.
