The interaction between volcanic activity and flank instability during the Christmas Eve eruption at Mount Etna in 2018 is explored, using a mechanically consistent inverse model fitting high spatial resolution SAR data. Inversions search for fractures that may be curved and can accommodate co‐eval pressure and shear stress changes. Displacements associated with the eruption result from the interaction between two intrusion sources: a buried dyke and a curved sheared intrusion that fed the eruption. Moreover, we identify that the sheared magmatic intrusion induced the observed eastward slip on the Pernicana fault, while the Fiandaca fault was undergoing stress accumulation, which was suddenly released during a M5.0 seismic event. The Fiandaca fault is determined to be listric, rooting beneath the mobile eastern flank of the volcano. This study highlights the role of curved fractures, acting as sheared intrusions or as faults, in volcanoes exhibiting flank instabilities. Magma propagation is an unsteady process controlled by magma‐crust interaction. To provide information on its dynamics, we invert complementary ground deformation data spanning the 8 hr preceding the 26 May 2016 eruption at Piton de la Fournaise (PdF) volcano (La Réunion, France). Data are inverted using 3‐D boundary element models combined with a Monte Carlo inversion method. The final geometry of the displacement source is determined based on four interferograms spanning the whole propagation phase while the dynamics of the propagation is inferred from temporal inversion of continuous Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) data, using the final geometry as an a priori to constrain the source. The best modeled magma path consists in a 2,700‐m‐long sill located 800 m above sea level and connected to the eruptive fissure by a subvertical dike. The quick opening of the horizontal part of the intrusion could have been favored by limited flank sliding during the early stage of propagation. The intrusion then stalled for ∼5 hr, while pressure increased slightly, until final upward propagation and eruption. Volume budget suggests that the eruption was fed by a single batch of magma quickly disconnected from its source. The delay prior to the eruption may reflect a limited magma supply. Finally, two mechanisms, potentially acting together, might have favored the eruption: a driving role of magmatic gas and/or, as often observed at Piton de la Fournaise, an eastward flank slip. During the 26 May 2016 eruption of Piton de la Fournaise, Réunion Island,the preeruptive crisis spanned 8hr25min from the first signal recorded by the observatory to the eruption onset.We determine the magma paths and propagation timing, which led to this eruption using complementary satellite data of ground surface displacement, combining radar interferometry, which provides high spatial resolution, with GPS, which provides high temporal resolution. We highlight complex magma propagation within the subareal volcano, showing two direction changes, an arrest and an acceleration. Flank slip and magma degassing seem to play a key role in controlling both the geometry and the timing. Based on this scenario, this event was close to turn into a failed eruption as there was a 5‐hr pause in propagation before magma finally reached the surface. On 21 May 2023, a hidden eruption occurred at the Southeast Crater (SEC) of Etna (Italy); indeed, bad weather prevented its direct and remote observation. Tephra fell toward the southwest, and two lava flows propagated along the SEC's southern and eastern flanks. The monitoring system of the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia testified to its occurrence. We analyzed the seismic and infrasound signals to constrain the temporal evolution of the fountain, which lasted about 5 h. We finally reached Etna's summit two weeks later and found an unexpected pyroclastic density current (PDC) deposit covering the southern lava flow at its middle portion. We performed unoccupied aerial system and field surveys to reconstruct in 3D the SEC, lava flows, and PDC deposits and to collect some samples. The data allowed for detailed mapping, quantification, and characterization of the products. The resulting lava flows and PDC deposit volumes were (1.54 ± 0.47) × 106 m3 and (1.30 ± 0.26) × 105 m3, respectively. We also analyzed ground-radar and satellite data to evaluate that the plume height ranges between 10 and 15 km. This work is a comprehensive analysis of the fieldwork, UAS, volcanic tremor, infrasound, radar, and satellite data. The 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens was instrumental in advancing understanding of how volcanoes work. Lateral edifice collapses and the generation of volcanic debris avalanches were not widely recognized prior to that eruption, making assessment of their hazards and risks challenging. The proliferation of studies since 1980 on resulting deposits and evaluation of processes leading to their generation has built on the insights from the 1980 eruption. Volcano-related destabilizing phenomena, such as strength reduction by hydrothermal alteration, deformation and structural modifications from shallow magma intrusion, and thermal pressurization of pore fluids supplement those factors also affecting nonvolcanic slopes and can lead to larger failures. Remote and ground-based monitoring techniques can aid in detecting potentially destabilizing dynamic processes and in forecasting the size and location of future large lateral collapses, although forecasting remains a topic of investigation. More than a thousand large lateral collapse events likely ≥ 0.01 km3 in volume have now been identified from deposits or inferred from source area morphology, leading to a recognition of their importance in the evolution of volcanoes and the hazards they pose. Criteria for recognition of debris-avalanche deposits include morphological factors and textural characteristics from outcrop to microscopic scale, allowing discrimination from other volcaniclastic deposits. Lateral edifice failure impacts a broad spectrum of volcanic structures in diverse tectonic settings and can occur multiple times during the evolution of individual volcanoes. Globally, collapses ≥ 0.1 km3 in volume have been documented 5–6 times per century since 1500 CE, with about one per century having a volume ≥ 1 km3. The 6-month-long effusive eruption at the Fagradalsfjall volcano in 2021 is the most visited eruption site in Iceland to date (June 2023), and it needed intense lava flow hazard assessment. In this study we document how strategies for lava flow modeling were implemented using the stochastic model MrLavaLoba to evaluate hazards during this effusive event. Overall, the purposes were threefold: (a) pre-eruption simulations to investigate potential lava inundation of critical infrastructure, (b) syn-eruption simulations for short-term (2-week time frame) lava flow hazard assessment and (c) syn-eruption simulations for long-term (months to years) hazard assessments. Additionally, strategies for lava barrier testing were developed, and syn-eruption topographic models were incorporated into simulations in near real time. The model provided promising results that were shared regularly at stakeholder meetings with the monitoring personnel, scientists and civil-protection representatives helping to identify potential short-term and long-term lava hazards. This included evaluation of the timing of barrier overflow and the filling and spilling of lava from one valley to another. During the crisis the MrLavaLoba model was updated to increase functionality such as by considering multiple active vents. Following the eruption, the model was optimized substantially, decreasing the computational time required for the simulations and speeding up the delivery of final products. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Previous work at Fernandina, the most active volcano of the Western Galápagos (Ecuador), revealed evidence for both a shallow and a deep magma reservoir, but the relative contribution of the two reservoirs to eruptions remains unclear. Here we investigate the September 2017 circumferential eruption and the June 2018 radial eruption using interferometric synthetic aperture radar data and geodetic modeling. Our results show that during the 2017 eruption magma was simultaneously withdrawn from the deep reservoir, injected upwards through the shallow reservoir, and then fed the circumferential feeder dike to the SW of the caldera. Two episodes of inflow of new magma occurred in both the deep and shallow magma reservoirs in the inter‐eruptive period from December 2017 to May 2018. During the 2018 eruption, both reservoirs fed two radial feeder dikes below the north flank, probably interacting with an underlying peripheral melt pocket, and an inclined sheet below the NW sector of the caldera. Our results highlight the primary role of the deeper reservoir which accumulates most of the magma before eruptions. Both eruptions were characterized by rapid magma transfer from the deeper to the shallower reservoir. This is similar to what is observed at the nearby Wolf volcano, but unlike nearby Sierra Negra, where a shallower reservoir accumulates higher volumes of magma before eruptions. These differences in the pre‐eruptive role of the deeper and shallower reservoirs might be related to the different evolutionary stages of Fernandina and Wolf with regard to the more mature Sierra Negra. We report the first detection of unrest at Socompa volcano during our recent survey of Central Andean volcanos in Northern Chile using Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar measurements spanning January 2018 to October 2021. We find that Socompa volcano, whilst initially undeforming and no recorded eruptions for 7.2 kyr, shows a steady uplift (17.5 mm/yr) from November 2019, independently recorded by near‐field continuous Global Positioning System data. The deformation pattern can be fitted with pressure increase in an ellipsoidal source region stretching from 2.1 to 10.5 km, with a volume change rate of ∼6.2 × 106 m3/yr. Our observations of the onset of uplift suggest it is unlikely that a nearby Mw 6.8 deep intraslab earthquake on 3 June 2020 triggered the unrest. The deformation signal we detect indicates the initiation of unrest at Socompa, after at least two decades without measurable deformation, and many thousands of years without volcanic activity. Using radar interferometry technique and differencing radar images from two dates, it is possible to retrieve millimeter‐level surface displacements during this period. Here, we use a time series of multiple images spanning January 2018 to January 2023, over the Central Andean volcanoes in Northern Chile, to estimate the change in ground movement through time. Combined with Global Positioning System data, we find Socompa volcano started to uplift in November 2019 at a relatively stable speed (of 17.5 mm/yr) without any trace of slowing down up to December 2021. Our analysis suggests that this volcanic deformation is unlikely to have been triggered by a nearby 112 km depth, Mw 6.8 earthquake, which occurred in June 2020, and was thus after the onset time. Deformation at Socompa has similarities with other volcanoes in the Central Andes, where low rates of magmatic uplift have been detected at other apparently quiescent volcanoes. Such large‐scale monitoring efforts using remote sensing data are important, as we can better understand the deformation style of these volcanoes in areas that are poorly instrumented. During a volcanic crisis, high‐rate, localized deformation can indicate magma close to the surface, with important implications for eruption forecasting. However, only a few such examples have been reported, because frequent, dense monitoring is needed. High‐resolution Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is capable of achieving <1 m spatial resolution and sub‐weekly revisit times, but is under‐used. Here we use high‐resolution satellite SAR imagery from COSMO‐SkyMed, TerraSAR‐X, and Sentinel‐1 to detect intra‐crater uplift preceding the November 2017 onset of eruptive activity at Agung, Indonesia. Processing the SAR imagery with an up‐to‐date, accurate, high‐resolution digital elevation model was crucial for preventing aliasing of the deformation signal and for accurate georeferencing. We show that >15 cm of line‐of‐sight shortening occurred over a 400‐by‐400 m area on the crater floor in September‐October 2017, accompanying a deep seismic swarm and flank dyke intrusion. We attribute the deformation to the pressurization of a shallow (<200 m deep) hydrothermal system by the injection of magmatic gases and fluids. We also observe a second pulse of intra‐crater deformation of 3–5 cm within 4 days to 11 hr prior to the first phreatomagmatic eruption, which is consistent with interaction between the hydrothermal system and the ascending magma. This phreatomagmatic eruption created the central pathway used during the final stages of magma ascent. Our observations have important implications for understanding unrest and eruption forecasting, and demonstrate the potential of monitoring with high‐resolution SAR. This deformation is a warning sign that can be useful when forecasting volcanic eruptions, especially when the deformation area is small (less than 1–2 km2), indicating that magma or magmatic fluids are close to the surface (less than 1 km deep). High‐resolution satellites such as COSMO‐SkyMed can measure ground deformation several times per week with better than 1 m resolution and are thereby able to detect and monitor rapid small‐area deformation. We use high‐resolution elevation and radar satellite data to detect deformation on the crater floor of Mount Agung, Indonesia, occurring before the November 2017 eruption. We show that the crater floor moved toward the satellites by more than 15 cm in September‐October 2017, accompanying an earthquake swarm, caused by magma intruding into the flank of the volcano. In the 4 days leading up to the eruption, we see another 3–5 cm of deformation. A shallow body of magmatic fluids less than 200 m below the crater floor was probably responsible for this ground deformation. Our research shows the potential of monitoring volcanoes with high‐resolution radar satellites. Simulating magma propagation pathways requires both a well‐calibrated model for the stress state of the volcano and models for dike advance within such a stress field. Here, we establish a framework for calculating computationally efficient and flexible magma propagation scenarios in the presence of caldera structures. We first develop a three‐dimensional (3D) numerical model for the stress state at volcanoes with mild topography, including the stress induced by surface loads and unloading due to the formation of caldera depressions. Then, we introduce a new, simplified 3D model of dike propagation. Such a model captures the complexity of 3D magma trajectories with low running time, and can backtrack dikes from a vent to the magma storage region. We compare the new dike propagation model to a previously published 3D model. Finally, we employ the simplified model to produce shallow dike propagation scenarios for a set of synthetic caldera settings with increasingly complex topographies. The resulting synthetic magma pathways and eruptive vent locations broadly reproduce the variability observed in natural calderas. Near‐real time analysis of magnetization can provide important information for the imaging of volcano systems and their spatiotemporal evolution. This study focuses on the contribution of volcano‐magnetic signals from reiterations of ground magnetic measurements to investigate the evolution of active structures at the Piton de la Fournaise volcano from 2017 to 2020. Changes are demonstrated by magnetic anomalies along a reference profile by means of the reiteration periods. These variations are first modeled qualitatively in 2D using electrical resistivity constraints in order to investigate the evolution of magnetization at depth through time, and the model is subsequently compared with the 3D intrusive activity from depth up to the surface from Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) inverse modeling. The shallow areas of demagnetization modeled from one reiteration to another are consistent with the geometry and location of the underlying intrusions revealed by the 3D InSAR models, suggesting strong thermal, stress, and electrokinetic effects due to magmatic activity not only at the surface but also at depth, along the main magmatic paths. It also raises a question as to the extent of the associated thermal diffusion processes at the scale of individual magma injections. This study confirms that detecting resistivity and magnetization anomalies, and quantifying their spatiotemporal evolution, can provide powerful tools for imaging volcanic systems at various scales and for providing warning of associated hazards. It also highlights the necessity for 4D monitoring of volcanic edifices using this method to provide greater precision, an important issue that is now made possible by the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle measurements. Recent studies have evidenced the potential of magnetic field measurements in imaging thermal anomalies (strong influence of temperature on magnetic measurements) and mechanical heterogeneities (fracturing‐alteration). Piton de la Fournaise (La Réunion Island, Indian Ocean) is an outstanding target to address such issues, being highly active and closely monitored. In this study, we used repeated magnetic measurements conducted over 3 years along a 3,780‐m‐length profile close to the summit of Piton de la Fournaise. We used the complementarities between magnetization and electrical resistivity parameters in a 2D magnetic modeling approach, in order to image the consequence of the eruptive dynamics on the edifice structure at depth. The temporal evolution of the magnetic anomalies appears strongly correlated to the depths and volumes of magmatic intrusions along the main active area. These results open new perspectives in studying the spatiotemporal changes in magmatic, hydrothermal, and mechanical changes and alteration processes within volcanic edifices. We present analog experiments on dike propagation, followed by a numerical model of horizontal and vertical growth, which is partially analytical and partially based on empirical observations. Experimental results show that the growth rates are similar until buoyancy becomes significant and, afterward, vertical growth dominates. The numerical model is defined for different conditions in a homogeneous medium: (a) constant flux, fracture‐limited propagation; (b) constant flux, viscous‐limited propagation; and (c) variable flux dependent on the driving pressure and dike dimensions. These conditions distinguish between cases when the influx depends on the deeper source of magma (e.g., a conduit, independent of the dike geometry) and when it depends on the dike, so the influx can change as it grows. In all cases, the ratio of vertical to horizontal propagation is proportional to the ratio of buoyancy pressure to source pressure, in which buoyancy drives vertical propagation. We test the numerical model on dikes observed at Piton de la Fournaise, in which the dimensions were estimated using geodetic and seismic data. The results show that the final dimensions can be reproduced using magma‐crust density differences of 50–300 kg/m3, viscosities of 30–300 Pa·s, influxes of 50–750 m3/s and shear moduli of ∼10 GPa. The modeled magma and host rock parameters agree with previous studies of the volcano, while the flux is higher than what is typically observed during eruption. This implies a variable injection condition, in which the flux peaks during propagation and diminishes by the onset of eruption. Building reliable models of how they grow is important for forecasting future eruptions. Mathematical models of dike growth commonly consider growth in length only, which allows for simplifications that make it efficient to run simulations. More‐complex 3D simulations tend to require powerful computers and can take a long time to complete. We present a new model that simplifies the dike to an ellipsoidal shape, like a flattened sphere. This model allows dikes to grow in a way that matches experiments and shows that the growth depends on physical forces like buoyancy. When dikes have a low buoyancy, they can grow both vertically and horizontally, but as they become more buoyant, they grow primarily vertically. We test our model against past eruptions at Piton de la Fournaise, a highly active volcano located off the eastern coast of Madagascar. We find that under certain conditions, the model can reproduce the sizes of the dikes. These conditions help us to understand what happens at this volcano specifically, but also how other volcanoes can behave in general. Two of the most widely observed co‐eruptive volcanic phenomena—Ground deformation and volcanic outgassing—Are fundamentally linked via the mechanism of magma degassing and the development of compressibility, which controls how the volume of magma changes in response to a change in pressure. Here we use thermodynamic models—Constrained by petrological data—To reconstruct volatile exsolution and the consequent changes in magma properties. We use the fraction of SO2 exsolved during decompression to predict co‐eruptive SO2 flux and magma compressibility to predict co‐eruptive surface deformation (both normalized by erupted volume). We conduct sensitivity tests using properties of typical basalts to assess how varying magma volatile content, crustal properties, and chamber geometry affect co‐eruptive deformation and degassing. We find that magmatic H2O content has the most impact on both SO2 flux and volume change. Our findings have general implications for typical basaltic systems in arc and ocean island settings. The higher water content of arc magmas makes them more compressible than ocean island magmas and leads to muted or non‐existent deformation being observed during arc eruptions. Our models are consistent with observation: Deformation has been detected during 48% of basaltic eruptions in ocean island settings (16/33) during the satellite era (2005–2020), but only 11% of basaltic eruptions in arc settings (7/61). When magma exsolves volatiles (water, carbon dioxide, sulfur) during storage in the crust prior to eruptions, the fluid bubbles cause the magma to become compressible, and behave like a sponge. The effect of this degassing is that when pressure changes in the magma chamber (due to eruption, or due to recharge), the gas bubbles expand or contract in response, effectively maintaining a near‐constant volume for the magma. Understanding the effect of magmatic gas on volume changes is key to developing integrated, satellite‐based volcano monitoring approaches. Piton de la Fournaise, situated on La Réunion island (France), is one of the most active hot spot basaltic shield volcanoes worldwide, experiencing at least two eruptions per year since the establishment of the volcanological observatory in 1979. Eruptions are typically fissure-fed and form extensive lava flow fields. About 95 % of some ∼ 250 historical events (since the first confidently dated eruption in 1708) have occurred inside an uninhabited horseshoe-shaped caldera (hereafter referred to as the Enclos), which is open to the ocean on its eastern side. Rarely (12 times since the 18th century), fissures have opened outside of the Enclos, where housing units, population centers, and infrastructure are at risk. In such a situation, lava flow hazard maps are a useful way of visualizing lava flow inundation probabilities over large areas. Here, we present the up-to-date lava flow hazard map for Piton de la Fournaise based on (i) vent distribution, (ii) lava flow recurrence times, (iii) statistics of lava flow lengths, and (iv) simulations of lava flow paths using the DOWNFLOW stochastic numerical model. The map of the entire volcano highlights the spatial distribution probability of future lava flow invasion for the medium to long term (years to decades). It shows that the most probable location for future lava flow is within the Enclos (where there are areas with up to 12 % probability), a location visited by more than 100 000 visitors every year. Outside of the Enclos, probabilities reach 0.5 % along the active rift zones. Although lava flow hazard occurrence in inhabited areas is deemed to be very low (< 0.1 %), it may be underestimated as our study is only based on post-18th century records and neglects older events. We also provide a series of lava flow hazard maps inside the Enclos, computed on a multi-temporal (i.e., regularly updated) topography. Although hazard distribution remains broadly the same over time, some changes are noticed throughout the analyzed periods due to improved digital elevation model (DEM) resolution, the high frequency of eruptions that constantly modifies the topography, and the lava flow dimensional characteristics and paths. The lava flow hazard map for Piton de la Fournaise presented here is reliable and trustworthy for long-term hazard assessment and land use planning and management. Specific hazard maps for short-term hazard assessment (e.g., for responding to volcanic crises) or considering the cycles of activity at the volcano and different event scenarios (i.e., events fed by different combinations of temporally evolving superficial and deep sources) are required for further assessment of affected areas in the future – especially by atypical but potentially extremely hazardous large-volume eruptions. At such an active site, our method supports the need for regular updates of DEMs and associated lava flow hazard maps if we are to be effective in keeping up to date with mitigation of the associated risks. Eruptions at shield volcanoes often occur from radially aligned linear fissures fed by blade‐like magma‐filled cracks (dykes). The fissures of the 2018 Sierra Negra eruption were scattered on the flank of the volcano. Space‐borne radar interferometric data (interferometric synthetic aperture radar) revealed that, unexpectedly, part of the eruption was fed by a 15 km long, tortuous and flat‐lying crack (sill). Here we develop a framework that captures the full three‐dimensional (3D) kinematics of non‐planar intrusions. This includes both an analytical and comprehensive numerical scheme. We constrain the models such that they match the observed ground deformation at Sierra Negra. We show that the peculiar sill trajectory is due to the competing stress gradient magnitudes being close to one another throughout its propagation. By accounting for the interaction of all these factors, these 3D models open the possibility to understand and simulate the geometry of magma transport at volcanic systems. Plain Language Summary: Here, we show in unprecedented detail using space‐borne radar interferometric data, a large volume eruption at Sierra Negra volcano, Galápagos Islands fed by a flat‐lying crack (sill). The observations are particularly intriguing as this sill's trajectory was over 15‐km‐long and while it remained flat it was highly curved, which, cannot be explained by existing models. We employ simple fracture mechanics models to show that the sill grew away from the summit due to the stresses induced by the slope of the volcano. Further from the summit, forces caused by the magma/rock weight contrast began to compete with the slope stresses causing the sill's growth direction to turn as observed. We show how parameters such as: magma volume, weight contrast, sill depth and the tectonic stresses, play a role in defining if/where the flank eruption occurs. To summarize, we show a well constrained example of a curved sill‐fed eruption, which has never been observed in such detail before. These observations warranted the use of new three‐dimensional (3D) models to help explain the process. This work shows how to analyze the paths of cracks feeding volcanic flank eruptions efficiently in 3D, and can be used to understand the potential hazard of a particular batch of magma. Surface deformation accompanying dike intrusions is dominated by uplift and horizontal motion directly related to the intrusions. In some cases, it includes subsidence due to associated magma reservoir deflation. When reservoir deflation is large enough, it can form, or reactivate preexisting, caldera ring‐faults. Ring‐fault reactivation, however, is rarely observed during moderate‐sized eruptions. On February 21, 2015 at Ambrym volcano in Vanuatu, a basaltic dike intrusion produced more than 1 m of coeruptive uplift, as measured by InSAR, synthetic aperture radar correlation, and Multiple Aperture Interferometry. Here, we show that an average of ∼40 cm of slip occurred on a normal caldera ring‐fault during this moderate‐sized (VEI < 3) event, which intruded a volume of ∼24 × 106 m3 and erupted ∼9.3 × 106 m3 of lava (DRE). Using the 3D Mixed Boundary Element Method, we explore the stress change imposed by the opening dike and the depressurizing reservoir on a passive, frictionless fault. Normal fault slip is promoted when stress is transferred from a depressurizing reservoir beneath one of Ambrym's main craters. After estimating magma compressibility, we provide an upper bound on the critical fraction (f = 7%) of magma extracted from the reservoir to trigger fault slip. We infer that broad basaltic calderas may form in part by hundreds of subsidence episodes no greater than a few meters, as a result of magma extraction from the reservoir during moderate‐sized dike intrusions. Calderas form when enough magma leaves a deep reservoir, and the solid rock lid above this reservoir can no longer support its own weight. Caldera faults, or cracks surrounding the reservoir which extend from the reservoir to Earth's surface, form as the lid collapses. Ambrym volcano (Vanuatu) has a 12‐km wide caldera, and researchers propose it formed during an explosive eruption 2,000 years ago. However, in 2018, Ambrym's caldera sunk along caldera faults during a nonexplosive eruption. This observation questions whether an explosive eruption was necessary to form Ambrym's caldera in the first place. Furthermore, in February 2015, an eruption 10 times smaller than in 2018 also caused the ground to sink along caldera faults. Utilizing ground motion data obtained from satellite radar systems to model magma reservoir outflow and fault displacement, we conclude that, in 2015, the ground sank along caldera faults. This sinking is explained by the removal of as little as <7% of the stored magma from the reservoir. We therefore propose that Ambrym's wide caldera may have formed as a result of many frequently occurring medium‐sized eruptions. This challenges the thought that wide calderas mainly form as a result of large eruptions. The Holuhraun fissure eruption (Iceland) in 2014–2015, which originated from the Bárðarbunga volcanic system, was exceptional in several respects. It lasted 6 months and, throughout its duration, it released up to 9.6 Mt of SO2 in the atmosphere. The main recorded hazard affecting the entire country over the 6 months was the constant presence of a low-level gas cloud that led to recurrent air pollution episodes. The Icelandic Meteorological Office responded to this human health hazard by (1) setting up a forecasting system to anticipate the distribution of SO2 over Iceland and (2) preparing probabilistic hazard maps to support the decisions taken by the Icelandic Civil Protection in demarcating the accessible area around the eruption site. This paper introduces some technical aspects of the application of the CALPUFF numerical model to this eruption like the SO2 dispersal forecasting setup, the volcanic source numerical description, and the Monte Carlo procedure adopted for the creation of the probabilistic hazard maps. CALPUFF-based maps were created in January 2015, when the eruption was still ongoing, with the assumption that the eruption would be continuing with the same intensity. Maps for the entire country and for a smaller domain were produced, the latter showing the likelihood to exceeding an hourly concentration of 2600 μg/m3 (1 ppm) of SO2 for the spring season, a level chosen by the Icelandic Civil Protection for the delineation of the area of restricted access around the eruption site. As during the eruption there was no time for a rigorous evaluation of the model accuracy, we then undertook a retrospective analysis of CALPUFF model performance comparing the forecasted hourly SO2 concentration with real-time measurements at key-sites. The model did reproduce the hourly observations (the maximum within a 24-running window) with a level of agreement of 50.6% in Mývatn (85 km from the eruption site) and 50.4% in Reykjavík (258 km), when instances of null pairs have been removed. In Mývatn, the model overestimated the concentration more than 22% of the time. In Höfn (104 km), the model accuracy is 81.7% and occurrences of underestimation are higher than 11% of the time. In Reyðarfjörður (at 124 km), the model accuracy is assessed to be 82.7% and the model overestimates occurring 15.1% of the time. Possible explanations for the observed mismatch between model results and measurements include the spatial resolution of meteorological data field, the capability into reproducing chemical reactions of SO2 in atmosphere, and the reduced extension of the numerical domain. In addition, the model performance is strongly dependent on the source descriptors (e.g., strength of the SO2 flux and injection height) that, in this contribution, have been kept constant over long periods—neglecting, in this way, the natural variability of a dynamic emission of SO2. This consideration points toward the need of frequent and high-quality observation data for the initialization of dispersal numerical model. In light of this retrospective analysis, the probabilistic hazard maps possibly over-estimated the area exposed to high level of SO2 concentration. All the same, this paper reports on how quantitative probabilistic hazard mapping can be used for mitigating the health risk of volcanic SO2 emissions during a volcanic crisis to the benefit of operational hazard monitoring in support an effective crisis response. Small-volume proximal-summit eruptions, sometimes with only little precursors, are common at Piton de la Fournaise (La Reunion Island, France). Their eruptive style ranges from Hawaiian to Strombolian, but their eruptive mechanisms are still not completely understood. To gain insight, we combined syn-eruptive field work, textural and geochemical measurements on the short-lived eruption of July 2015 and we compared it with the 2014 eruption, which opened the ongoing eruptive cycle at Piton de la Fournaise. Crystal-poor and moderately vesicular components were predominant at the beginning of the eruptions, during the lava flux peak and the Hawaiian-style activity. Their abundance decreased with time in favour of less vesiculated and crystal-rich components during the decrease of the lava flux and the Strombolian-style activity. Physical, textural and chemical characterization of the pyroclasts, as well as thermometry calculations, permit relating the different texture and chemical features of the eruptive products with the pre- and syn-eruptive processes. Geophysical precursors detected several weeks before the July 2015 eruption, as well as some evidences of magmatic reheating recorded in bulk and crystal compositions highlight that the July 2015 magma results from a pre-eruptive mixing between more and less differentiated magmas. We finally deduced that the observed syn-eruptive textural variations are related to the same batch of magma undergoing different cooling and degassing dynamics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Small steam-driven volcanic explosions are common at volcanoes worldwide but are rarely documented or monitored; therefore, these events still put residents and tourists at risk every year. Steam-driven explosions also occur frequently (once every 2–5 years on average) at Lascar volcano, Chile, where they are often spontaneous and lack any identifiable precursor activity. Here, for the first time at Lascar, we describe the processes culminating in such a sudden volcanic explosion that occurred on 30 October 2015, which was thoroughly monitored by cameras, a seismic network, and gas and temperature sensors. Prior to the eruption, we retrospectively identified unrest manifesting as a gradual increase in the number of long-period (LP) seismic events in 2014, indicating an enhanced level of activity at the volcano. Additionally, sulfur dioxide (SO2) flux and thermal anomalies were detected before the eruption. Then, our weather station reported a precipitation event, followed by an increase in steaming and a sudden volcanic explosion at Lascar. The multidisciplinary data exhibited short-term variations associated with the explosion, including (1) an abrupt eruption onset that was seismically identified in the 1–10 Hz frequency band, (2) the detection of a 1.7 km high white-gray eruption column in camera images, and (3) a pronounced spike in SO2 emission rates reaching 55 kg s -1 during the main pulse of the eruption as measured by a mini-differential optical absorption spectroscopy (DOAS) scanner. Continuous carbon dioxide (CO2) and temperature measurements conducted at a fumarole on the southern rim of the Lascar crater revealed a pronounced change in the trend of the relationship between the CO2 mixing ratio and the gas outlet temperature; we speculate that this change was associated with the prior precipitation event. An increased thermal anomaly inside the active crater as observed in Sentinel-2 images and drone overflights performed after the steam-driven explosion revealed the presence of a ∼50 m long fracture truncating the floor of the active crater, which coincides well with the location of the thermal anomaly. This study presents the chronology of events culminating in a steam-driven explosion but also demonstrates that phreatic explosions are difficult to predict, even if the volcano is thoroughly monitored; these findings emphasize why ascending to the summits of Lascar and similar volcanoes is hazardous, particularly after considerable precipitation. The Miocene Oxaya Formation, exposed along the western Andean slope in northern Chile, represents one of the largest ignimbrite provinces on earth. In this study, magnetic fabric data were acquired from a ~ 1-km-long core drilled vertically through a single cooling unit of the Oxaya Formation the ca.22 Ma Cardones ignimbrite. Samples for magnetic analysis were obtained every 20 m from the fine-grained matrix of the core. Detailed measurements of the variation in bulk magnetic properties, including natural remanent magnetization (NRM), susceptibility, and anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS), were used to monitor changes in magnetic mineralogy as well as changes in the strength and orientation of the magnetic fabric throughout the flow. AMS ellipsoid orientation and shape reflect rapid deposition from a concentrated granular fluidized flow and constrain both the location of the source caldera for this catastrophic eruption and processes of transport and deposition in this large-volume ignimbrite. After utilizing the magnetic remanence to correct for rotation about the core axis, well-grouped and imbricated petrofabric orientations reveal a well-defined SW (247°) transport direction down a proto-Western Andean slope indicating syn- or post-welding flow and confirming the deformed Lauca caldera as the likely source of the eruption. Systematic variations in fabric shape (T) and intensity (P) with depth reveal a predominately oblate fabric toward the top and base of the flow and predominately prolate fabrics in the center. These vertical changes in fabric reveal that this massive, apparently homogeneous, deposit has a systematic layering. This layering reflects depth-dependent temperature variations, temporal changes in the flow boundary zone during deposition and post-depositional processes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Volcano‐tectonic seismicity has been recorded for decades on various volcanoes and is linked with the magma transport and reservoir pressurization. Yet earthquakes often appear broadly distributed such that magma movement is difficult to infer from its analysis. We explore the seismicity that occurred before eruptions at Piton de la Fournaise in the last 5 years. Using template matching and relocation techniques, we produce a refined image of the summit seismicity, demonstrating that most earthquakes are located on a ring structure. However, only a portion of this structure is activated before each eruption, which provides an indication as to the direction of the future eruptive site. Furthermore, we show that the delay between the pre‐eruptive swarm and the eruption onset is proportional to the distance of the eruptive fissures relative to the summit cone. This reveals that the beginning of the intrusion already bears information regarding the future eruption location. The VEI 4 rhyolitic eruption of Cordón Caulle volcano in 2011–2012 was immediately followed by ∼0.77 m of exponentially decaying uplift during 2012–2015. In this study, we present evidence of additional transient pulses of inflation with interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) time series during 2016–2018. We also assess whether the 2012–2015 uplift can be explained by viscoelastic relaxation or not. InSAR detected ∼12 cm of uplift during 2016–2017 and ∼5 cm during 2017–2018. The three inflation episodes have very similar spatial scales and can be modeled with the same inflating sill (z ∼ 6 km), but their time evolution is significantly different. Numerical models of a pressurized reservoir surrounded by a viscoelastic shell do not have a better fit than a magma injection model to the 2012–2015 InSAR time series, indicating that magma injection is the most likely mechanism to explain this uplift signal. The spatial similarities of the three pulses suggest that they are produced by episodic magma injection. These magma injection pulses provide the heat to remobilize the crystal mush beneath the volcano on timescales of a few months, but the end of the uplift is not predicted by existing models. None of these uplift pulses were related to abnormal seismicity, and we speculate that they are mostly aseismic because they caused stresses of lower magnitude than the coeruptive stresses. The meter scale displacement observed at Cordón Caulle between 2007 and 2018 suggests that the volcano undergoes episodic cycles of inflation like those observed in silicic calderas. The Puyehue-Cord'on Caulle Volcanic Complex (PCCVC) is one of the best examples of tectonic control on volcanism at the Southern Volcanic Zone of the Andes (southern Chile). The PCCVC comprises several volcanic centres that erupted dominantly SiO2-rich magmas at the intersection of the trench-parallel Liquiñe-Ofqui Fault Zone (LOFZ) and an inherited NW-SE basement structure. The PCCVC began an explosive and later effusive eruption on 2011 June 4 causing decimetre- to metre-scale surface deformation that was observed by a series of Envisat ASAR satellite scenes. We modelled this data and complemented it with timeseries of two continuous GPS stations and seismicity recorded by a local network. Deformation during the first 3 days of the eruption can be modelled either by two point sources aligned with the NW-SE Cord'on Caulle graben or by a closing dyke with a significant component of leftlateral motion along the graben. These models are discussed with respect to their implications on the estimated rheology and the eruption mechanism. GPS observations near the volcanic complex reveal an additional, more localised effect related to the LOFZ in the south of the complex. Coeruptive deformation at the main geological structures of the PCCVC is further supported by relocated seismicity, which is concentrated along the Cord'on Caulle graben and to the western side of the LOFZ. The 2007 caldera-forming eruption of Piton de la Fournaise (PdF) erupted the largest volume of magma (210 Mm3) recorded at this volcano in at least three centuries. Major and trace element and Sr–Nd isotope data for bulk-rocks, groundmasses and olivine phenocrysts have been combined with melt inclusion data (major, trace and volatile elements) to track magma evolution over the whole eruptive sequence. We show that each eruptive phase had a distinctive geochemical and petrological signature and that caldera collapse on 5 April was preceded by a marked shift in bulk magma composition and crystal content and size. Aphyric basalt erupted at the beginning of the sequence (February 2007) had relatively high Sr isotope ratio (87Sr/86Sr = 0·70420–0·704180) and low Nd isotopic ratio (143Nd/144Nd = 0·51285–0·51286). Olivine-basalts extruded on 2–5 April just before caldera collapse are less enriched in radiogenic Sr (87Sr/86Sr = 0·70412–0·70416), but characterized by the same Nd isotopic composition. This magma is interpreted as a new deep input, which pressurized the shallow PdF plumbing system and triggered the 2007 activity. Post-collapse oceanite lavas represent the main volume of magma extruded in 2007. Their bulk-rocks and groundmasses have 87Sr/86Sr (∼0·70418) intermediate between those of February and 5 April, and similar to those of the March 2007 and 2001–2006 lavas. We show that the Steady State Basalts (SSB) commonly erupted at PdF are hybrid melts, which result from multistep mixing between ‘alkaline’ and ‘transitional’ end-members. Our results lead us to propose a new model of the PdF plumbing system to reconcile the petrological, geochemical and geophysical observations: (1) the shallow portion (above sea level) of the PdF plumbing system hosts several small sills, in which magma experiences variable degrees of degassing, cooling and crystallization; (2) oceanite lavas result from the withdrawal of shallow harrisitic mushes stored at low pressures (<48 MPa; <1800–2400 m depth) below both the volcano summit and its eastern flank; (3) water degassing plays a major role in fast magma crystallization at shallow depths. Multistep ascent and periodic extrusion of the shallow magmas is promoted by injections of deeper and hotter basaltic magma, containing up to 1·3 wt % H2O and 1630 ppm S. In 2007, the new deep input was the ultimate source of the large excess in sulfur degassing detected by satellites. The formation of shallow, caldera-sized reservoirs of crystal-poor silicic magma requires the generation of large volumes of silicic melt, followed by the segregation of that melt and its accumulation in the upper crust. The 21.8 ± 0.4-ka Cape Riva eruption of Santorini discharged >10 km 3 of crystal-poor dacitic magma, along with <<1 km 3 of hybrid andesite, and collapsed a pre-existing lava shield. We have carried out a field, petrological, chemical, and high-resolution 40Ar/ 39Ar chronological study of a sequence of lavas discharged prior to the Cape Riva eruption to constrain the crustal residence time of the Cape Riva magma reservoir. The lavas were erupted between 39 and 25 ka, forming a ∼2-km 3 complex of dacitic flows, coulées and domes up to 200 m thick (Therasia dome complex). The Therasia dacites show little chemical variation with time, suggesting derivation from one or more thermally buffered reservoirs. Minor pyroclastic layers occur intercalated within the lava succession, particularly near the top. A prominent pumice fall deposit correlates with the 26-ka Y-4 ash layer found in deep-sea sediments SE of Santorini. One of the last Therasia lavas to be discharged was a hybrid andesite formed by the mixing of dacite and basalt. The Cape Riva eruption occurred no more than 2,800 ± 1,400 years after the final Therasia activity. The Cape Riva dacite is similar in major element composition to the Therasia dacites, but is poorer in K and most incompatible trace elements (e.g. Rb, Zr and LREE). The same chemical differences are observed between the Cape Riva and Therasia hybrid andesites, and between the calculated basaltic mixing end-members of each series. The Therasia and Cape Riva dacites are distinct silicic magma batches and are not related by shallow processes of crystal fractionation or assimilation. The Therasia lavas were therefore not simply precursory leaks from the growing Cape Riva magma reservoir. The change 21.8 ky ago from a magma series richer in incompatible elements to one poorer in those elements is one step in the well documented decrease with time of incompatibles in Santorini magmas over the last 530 ky. The two dacitic magma batches are interpreted to have been emplaced sequentially into the upper crust beneath the summit of the volcano, the first (Therasia) then being partially, or wholly, flushed out by the arrival of the second (Cape Riva). This constrains the upper-crustal residence time of the Cape Riva reservoir to less than 2,800 ± 1,400 years, and the associated time-averaged magma accumulation rate to >0.004 km 3 year -1. Rapid ascent and accumulation of the Cape Riva dacite may have been caused by an increased flux of mantle-derived basalt into the crust, explaining the occurrence of hybrid andesites (formed by the mixing of olivine basalt and dacite in approximately equal proportions) in the Cape Riva and late Therasia products. Pressurisation of the upper crustal plumbing system by sustained, high-flux injection of dacite and basalt may have triggered the transition from prolonged, largely effusive activity to explosive eruption and caldera collapse. The historically active Nemrut Volcano (2,948 m asl) (Eastern Anatolia), rising close to the western shore of huge alkaline Lake Van, has been the source of intense Plinian eruptions for >530,000 years (drilled lake sediments). About 40 widespread, newly recognized trachytic and less common rhyolitic fallout tephras and ca. 12 interbedded ignimbrites, sourced in Nemrut Volcano, are documented in stratigraphic traverses throughout an area of >6,000 km mostly west of Lake Van. Phenocrysts in the moderately peralkaline trachytes and rarer large-volume comenditic rhyolites comprise anorthoclase, hedenbergite-augite, fayalite and, especially in trachytic units, augite, minor aenigmatite, apatite and quartz, and rare chevkinite and zircon. Dacitic to rhyolitic tephras from nearby calcalkalic Süphan Volcano (4,058 m asl), locally interbedded with Nemrut tephras, are characterized by disequilibrium phenocryst assemblages (biotite, augitic clinopyroxene and hypersthene, minor olivine, common crystal clots and/or, in some deposits, amphibole). The magma volume (DRE) of the largest Nemrut tephra sheet (AP-1) described in detail may exceed 30 km. Extreme facies and systematic compositional changes are documented in the ca. 30 ka Nemrut Formation (NF) deposits formed from one large and complex eruption (thick rhyolitic fallout overlain by ignimbrite, welded agglutinate, overbank surge deposits, and final more mafic fallout deposits). Common evidence of magma mixing in Nemrut ignimbrites reflects eruption from compositionally zoned magma reservoirs. Several young Çekmece Formation trachytes overlying ca. 30 ka old NF deposits and the late trachytes of the NF deposits show compositional affinities to tephra from Süphan Volcano possibly due to temporary influx of Süphan magmas into the Nemrut system following the evacuation of >10 km magma (DRE) during the caldera-forming NF eruption. Axes of large fallout fans are dominantly SW-NE but W-E in the younger sheets resembling the direction of the present dominant wind field. Growth of Nemrut volcanic edifice and its peripheral domes since before 0.5 Ma in the hinge area between the Van and Muş tectonic basins is likely to have been the major factor in isolating Lake Van basin thus initiating the origin and subsequent alkaline evolution of the lake. This alkalinity was later significantly controlled by climate forcing. Volcanic disasters can cause severe loss of human life and damage to property. The main damage is caused during an eruption and from subsequent erosion of deposited materials. Heavy rainfall in volcanic areas erodes volcanic deposits, mainly pyroclastic flows and ash fall deposits, which flow as lahar to the foothill of the mountain and cause drastic damage to economically important areas. This post-eruption disaster becomes complex due to the occurrence of stream captures and watershed breakouts that lead to devastating lahars. Continuous monitoring of such geomorphic and hydrologic changes is necessary to cope with changing hazard conditions. Therefore it is important to update the watershed boundaries in order to study current hazard conditions and develop mitigation plans for future disasters. Changes of geomorphic and watershed boundary have occurred in the Mayon Volcano in the Philippines mainly as a result of a major volcanic eruption of 1993, due to which mitigation structures were constructed and modified in the low lying areas. In this study interferometry was used to develop DEM from SAR data to delineate watershed boundaries. New lava flows, pyroclastic flows and lahar deposits in the watersheds were mapped using elevation changes, coherence and intensity derived from the SAR images. Updating geomorphic features of the watersheds and their boundaries using SAR provides a new weather independent alternative technique for monitoring the effect of volcanic activity. With approximately 800 million people globally living within 100 km of a volcano, it is essential that we build a reliable observation system capable of delivering early warnings to potentially impacted nearby populations. Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and satellite Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) document comprehensive ground motions or ruptures near, and at, the Earth's surface and may be used to detect and analyze natural hazard phenomena. These datasets may also be combined to improve the accuracy of deformation results. Here, we prepare a differential interferometric SAR (DInSAR) time series and integrate it with GNSS data to create a fused dataset with enhanced accuracy of 3D ground motions over Hawaii island from November 2015 to April 2021. We present a comparison of the raw datasets against the fused time series and give a detailed account of observed ground deformation leading to the May 2018 and December 2020 volcanic eruptions. Our results provide important new estimates of the spatial and temporal dynamics of the 2018 Kilauea volcanic eruption. The methodology presented here can be easily repeated over any region of interest where an SAR scene overlaps with GNSS data. The results will contribute to diverse geophysical studies, including but not limited to the classification of precursory movements leading to major eruptions and the advancement of early warning systems. We compare the results obtained from the modelling of EDM, GPS, levelling and tilt data measured in the first part of the 1991–1993 eruption at Etna to the InSAR data acquired during the second part. The geodetic changes are very marked in the first half of the eruption and constrain a deflation source located at a few kilometers of depth (≈ 3 km b.s.l.), in agreement with other independent geophysical evidence. SAR data, available during the second part of the eruption, were analysed for different time intervals in the second part of the eruption. The interpretation of SAR interferograms reveals a large-scale but less marked deflation of the volcano that could be caused by a deeper source. This second source is in accord with a second deeper anomaly revealed by recent seismic investigations. The combination of geodetic data modelling and SAR images suggests a complex plumbing system composed at least of two possible storage regions located at different depths. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) remote sensing plays a significant role in volcano monitoring despite the measurements' non real-time nature. The technique's capability of imaging the spatial extent of ground motion has especially helped to shed light on the location, shape, and dynamics of subsurface magmatic storage and transport as well as the overall state of activity of volcanoes worldwide. A variety of different deformation phenomena are observed at exceptionally active and frequently erupting volcanoes, like Piton de la Fournaise on La Réunion Island. Those offer a powerful means of investigating related geophysical source processes and offer new insights into an active volcano's edifice architecture, stability, and eruptive behavior. Since 1998, Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) has been playing an increasingly important role in developing our present understanding of the Piton de la Fournaise volcanic system. We here collect the most significant scientific results, identify limitations, and summarize the lessons learned from exploring the rich Piton de la Fournaise SAR data archive over the past ~20 years. For instance, the technique has delivered first evidence of the previously long suspected mobility of the volcano's unsupported eastern flank, and it is especially useful for detecting displacements related to eruptions that occur far away from the central cone, where Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) stations are sparse. However, superimposed deformation processes, dense vegetation along the volcano's lower eastern flank, and turbulent atmospheric phase contributions make Piton de la Fournaise a challenging target for applying InSAR. Multitemporal InSAR approaches that have the potential to overcome some of these limitations suffer from frequent eruptions that cause the replacement of scatterers. With increasing data acquisition rates, multisensor complementarity, and advanced processing techniques that resourcefully handle large data repositories, InSAR is progressively evolving into a near-real-time, complementary, operational volcano monitoring tool. We therefore emphasize the importance of InSAR at highly active and well-monitored volcanoes such as Mount Etna, Italy, Kīlauea Volcano, Hawai'i, and Piton de la Fournaise, La Réunion. After a month-long increase in activity at the summit craters, on 24 December 2018, the Etna volcano experienced a short-lived lateral effusive event followed by a rapid resumption of low-level explosive and degassing activity at the summit vents. By combining space (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer; MODIS and SENTINEL-2 images) and ground-based geophysical data, we track, in near real-time, the thermal, seismic and infrasonic changes associated with Etna's activity during the September–December 2018 period. Satellite thermal data reveal that the fissural eruption was preceded by a persistent increase of summit activity, as reflected by overflow episodes in New SouthEast Crater (NSE) sector. This behavior is supported by infrasonic data, which recorded a constant increase both in the occurrence and in the energy of the strombolian activity at the same crater sectors mapped by satellite. The explosive activity trend is poorly constrained by the seismic tremor, which shows instead a sudden increase only since the 08:24 GMT on the 24 December 2018, almost concurrently with the end of the infrasonic detections occurred at 06:00 GMT. The arrays detected the resumption of infrasonic activity at 11:13 GMT of 24 December, when tremors almost reached the maximum amplitude. Infrasound indicates that the explosive activity was shifting from the summit crater along the flank of the Etna volcano, reflecting, with the seismic tremor, the intrusion of a gas-rich magma batch along a ~2.0 km long dyke, which reached the surface generating an intense explosive phase. The dyke propagation lasted for almost 3 h, during which magma migrated from the central conduit system to the lateral vent, at a mean speed of 0.15–0.20 m s−1. Based on MODIS and SENTINEL 2 images, we estimated that the summit outflows erupted a volume of lava of 1.4 Mm3 (±0.5 Mm3), and that the lateral effusive episode erupted a minimum volume of 0.85 Mm3 (±0.3 Mm3). The results presented here outline the support of satellite data on tracking the evolution of volcanic activity and the importance to integrate satellite with ground-based geophysical data in improving assessments of volcanic hazard during eruptive crises. A major goal in volcanology is to be able to constrain the physical properties of a volcanic system using surface observations. The behaviour of a volcanic system following an eruption can provide powerful constraints on these properties and can provide valuable information for understanding future hazard. We use spatially and temporally dense observations of surface deformation following the 12 June 2011 eruption of Nabro (Eritrea) to place constraints on the mechanics of its subsurface volcanic system. Nabro was imaged 129 times by TerraSAR-X and COSMO-SkyMed satellites during a 15-month period following the eruption. We have produced a detailed time series of the line-of-sight (LOS) displacements at Nabro, finding that the volcano subsides during the entire observation period at a decaying rate. We found significant atmospheric artefacts remained in the data set after a standard spatio-temporal filter was applied. Applying an empirical correction using a linear phase-elevation relationship removed artefacts but also removed real topographically correlated deformation. Instead, we were able to correct each SAR acquisition using independent delay estimates derived from the ECMWF ERA-Interim (ERA-I) global atmospheric model. The corrected time series can be modelled with the deflation of a Mogi source at ∼ 6.4 ± 0.3 km depth. Modelling the time series using viscoelastic relaxation of a shell which surrounds a spherical magma chamber can explain the observed subsidence without a source of further volume loss if the magma is compressible. CO2 outgassing is also a possible cause of continued subsidence. Contraction due to cooling and crystallisation, however, is probably minor. If any post-eruptive recharge of the magmatic system at Nabro is occurring, the rate of recharge must be slower than the post-eruptive relaxation processes. Combined with the lack of pre-eruptive inflation, we suggest that recharge of the magmatic system at Nabro either occurs at a rate that is slower than our detection limit, or it occurs episodically. During March, April and May 2007 the local newspaper for the island of La Réunion, “Le Journal de L’Ile de La Réunion” (JIR), published 427 articles relating to natural hazards, with hazard-related articles occupying a total paper area of 21.94 m2 and appearing in all but four of the 90 editions of the newspaper. This high level of coverage was due to the passage of two cyclones in March, the largest historical eruption of Piton de la Fournaise in April, and a major rock fall event in May. The high level of coverage may also be due to the fact that JIR is a tabloid that follows tabloid news values. Cyclones, volcanic eruptions and rock falls fit the news values of a tabloid well, especially when the stories involve the power elite, feature stories of human interest, include surprise elements and rescues, and are of high impact, especially to the local population. Disasters also provide spectacular imagery and the opportunity for eye-catching headlines, which is another element of the tabloid format. These key parameters thus all flag stories about natural hazards and, in particular, volcanic eruptions as being newsworthy for a tabloid.Of the page space devoted to natural hazards, 9.24 m2 (42%) were set aside to reporting of volcanic activity, specifically the April 2007 eruption of Piton de la Fournaise. We completed a content analysis of these reports to understand the quality of information disseminated to the readership and to extract data regarding the impact of the eruption on local communities. We found the information to be of extremely high quality, with lava reporting being the most important issue covered by page area, mostly due to its photogenic nature. If we consider text-dominated reports, and exclude photo-montages, then the order of importance in terms of space set aside to reporting of a particular theme becomes: (i) general eruption details; (ii) summit collapse; (iii) lava flows; (iv) evacuation; (v) gas; (vi) ocean-entry; (v) air fall; (vi) vegetation fires (lit by lava contact); and (vii) volcano-seismicity. As the eruption and the nature of the hazard evolved (from lava flow through air-fall and gas, to summit collapse and ocean-entry) so too did the focus of the reporting. Once the eruption had finished, emphasis shifted from the hardships of the impacted community to sightseeing and tourism. We found that the quality of the reporting resulted from the use of journalists who were specialized in their reporting areas and who therefore knew the background and the correct sources to seek out for information. This shows that a well-informed journalist can be (i) a means to disseminate information and educate an impacted population, and (ii) a source of information for the volcanologist regarding societal impacts of, and population responses to, natural hazards. Global Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) measurements made over the past decades provide insights into the lateral extent of magmatic domains, and capture volcanic process on scales useful for volcano monitoring. Satellite-based SAR imagery has great potential for monitoring topographic change, the distribution of eruptive products and surface displacements (InSAR) at subaerial volcanoes. However, there are challenges in applying it routinely, as would be required for the reliable operational assessment of hazard. The deformation detectable depends upon satellite repeat time and swath widths, relative to the spatial and temporal scales of volcanological processes. We describe the characteristics of InSAR-measured volcano deformation over the past two decades, highlighting both the technique’s capabilities and its limitations as a monitoring tool. To achieve this, we draw on two global datasets of volcano deformation: the Smithsonian Institution Volcanoes of the World database and the Centre for the Observation and Modelling of Earthquakes, Volcanoes and Tectonics volcano deformation catalogue, as well as compiling some measurement characteristics and interpretations from the primary literature.We find that a higher proportion of InSAR observations capture non-eruptive and non-magmatic processes than those from ground-based instrument networks, and that both transient (< month) and long-duration (> 5 years) deformation episodes are under-represented. However, satellite radar is already used to assess the development of extended periods of unrest and long-lasting eruptions, and improved spatial resolution and coverage have resulted in the detection of previously unrecognised deformation at both ends of the spatial scale (~ 10 to > 1000 km2). ‘Baseline’ records of past InSAR measurements, including ‘null’ results, are fundamental for any future interpretation of interferograms in terms of hazard‚ both by providing information about past deformation at an individual volcano, and for assessing the characteristics of deformation that are likely to be detectable (and undetectable) using InSAR.More than half of all InSAR deformation signals attributed to magmatic processes have sources in the shallow crust (< 5 km depth). While the depth distribution of InSAR-derived deformation sources is affected by measurement limitations, their lateral distribution provides information about the extent of active magmatic domains. Deformation is common (24% of all potentially magmatic events) at loci ≥5 km away from the nearest active volcanic vent. This demonstrates that laterally extensive active magmatic domains are not exceptional, but can comprise the shallowest part of trans-crustal magmatic systems in a range of volcanic settings.
