Previous studies have shown that when observers search repeatedly for a target in a particular context, they may develop a target template that is biased for that context. Because the same target may appear in multiple contexts, we wondered whether observers are able to develop multiple templates for the same target, with each template biased for a particular context. In a series of behavioral experiments, we show that observers can learn multiple target templates for a single target and that they can voluntarily switch among these templates depending on the context they expect to see. Our results suggest that these biased templates may coexist with an unbiased representation of the target, provided they are learned first.

When searching for a target object, observers use an internal representation of the target's appearance as a search template. This study used naturalistic stimuli to examine the specificity of this template. Observers first learned several name-image pairs; they then participated in a search experiment in which the names served as cues and the images served as targets. To test whether the observers searched for the targets using an exact image template, we included targets that were transformations of the studied image and targets that belonged to the same subordinate-level category as the studied image. The same stimuli were also used in a search experiment involving image cues. The name cue and image cue experiments produced different patterns of results. Unlike image cues, name cues produced similar benefits for transformations of the studied images as for the studied images themselves. Also unlike image cues, names cues produced no benefit for members of the same subordinate-level category as the studied image. These results suggest that when observers are trained on an image, they develop a search template that is relatively specific for the image but still tolerant to changes in scale and orientation.

Some search tasks involve looking for a category target in clutter. This is the task faced, for example, by a baggage screener looking for weapons in a suitcase. Such tasks presumably involve the segmentation and recognition of the target object, but it is unknown whether they also involve the segmentation and recognition of the distractor objects. To examine the depth of distractor processing in this task, we had observers search through cluttered displays composed of normal and chimerical distractors. The normal distractors were photographs of recognizable objects, while the chimerical distractors were created by interchanging parts between the normal objects. The obsever's task was to identify the display quadrant that contained an animal or a vehicle target. We varied the difficulty of the search task by varying target and distractor discriminability, target uncertainty, and target occlusion. Only when the target was partially occluded did we find an effect of distractor type. In this case, observers may have found the target through a process of mentally eliminating whole distractor objects. When the target was unoccluded, we found no evidence that observers selected and rejected whole distractors during search. This second result supports our previous claim that often the items for search in clutter are not whole objects.

Observers in recognition experiments invariably view objects against a blank background, whereas observers of real scenes sometimes view objects against dense clutter. In this study, we examined whether an object's background affects the information used for recognition. Our stimuli consisted of color photographs of everyday objects. The photographs were organized either as a sparse array, as is typical of a visual search experiment, or as high density clutter, such as might be found in a toy chest, a handbag, or a kitchen drawer. The observer's task was to locate an animal, vehicle, or food target in the stimulus. We varied the information in the stimuli by convolving them with a low-pass filter (blur) or a high-pass filter (edge) or converting them to grayscale. In two experiments, we found that the blur and edge manipulations produced a modest decrement in performance with the sparse arrangement but a severe decrement in performance with the clutter arrangement. These results indicate that the information used for recognition depends on the object's background. Thus, models of recognition that have been developed for isolated objects may not generalize to objects in dense clutter.

When viewing a cluttered scene, observers may not be able to segment whole objects prior to recognition. Instead, they may segment and recognize these objects in a piecemeal way. Here we test whether observers can use the appearance of one object part to predict the location and appearance of other object parts. During several training sessions, observers studied an object against a blank background. They then viewed this object against a background of clutter that camouflaged some parts of the object while leaving other parts salient. The observer's task was to find the camouflaged part. We varied the symmetry of the salient part with the expectation that as this symmetry decreased, the information about the camouflaged part's location and appearance would increase and this would facilitate search. Our results suggest that observers can use the salient part to predict the location, but not the appearance, of the camouflaged part.
