3. Creating a Research Community in Mathematics Education. WCER Working Paper No. 2003-10

Abstract

This paper presents evidence about the emergence of a research community in mathematics education by contrasting work in the field in the 1960s with current work with regard to six features of such communities. Based on this contrast, the claim that a research community in mathematics education has emerged is only partially supported. (a) Today, an alternative standards-based vision of school mathematics is generally agreed to, but the details of how this vision can be realized in actual classrooms are not yet apparent. (b) Since the 1960s, some additional resources have been made available for conducting research, but those resources are still limited. (c) In contrast to the 1960s, scholars now have ample means of sharing information, but they still find it difficult to adequately disseminate their findings to teachers, other educators, and policymakers. (d) Today, there is some agreement among scholars on theoretical constructs, but as yet little use of a common language to situate current research. Nevertheless, today knowledge is seen as constructivist rather than formal; the learner is seen as an active participant rather than a product; and teaching is seen as nonroutine rather than routine. (e) Research in mathematics teaching and learning is currently accepted within the education research community, and some inroads have been made with teacher educators and teachers, but there is still little acceptance of this research in other fields. (e) Finally, the preparation of new researchers is now being carried out in a handful of institutions with strong research traditions, available resources, and capable mentors. Reflecting on the work of the past 30 years, the paper concludes with 12 findings about the teaching and learning of mathematics today. (Contains 1 figure and 3 footnotes.)

Abstract

Designed to address the major conceptual problems associated with light and vision, appearances of surfaces, and color, this module can be used with high school students or college nonscience majors including those in elementary education. It is one in a series developed by the project "Overcoming Critical Barriers to Learning in Nonmajors' Science Courses." The materials offer guidance to teachers in diagnosing student deficiencies, in creating dissatisfaction with misconceptions, and in providing opportunities for application and practice. This module contains: (1) an introduction (specifying the critical barriers to understanding light and vision, appearances of surfaces, and color and explaining how to use the module to overcome these barriers); (2) diagnostic test and commentary (designed to be used as a pretest and/or posttest); (3) materials for lecture or discussion with commentary (consisting of a series of copy-ready masters for use as overhead transparencies and student handouts on light and color); (4) laboratory activities and commentary (including exercises on shadows, diffraction grating, and color shadows); and (5) problem sets (containing a problem set on light and vision and one on color). 12. Health Factors Influencing Education of American Indians. A Position Paper.

Abstract

The resume of health problems facing the American Indian school child emphasized that health, culture, education, and economics are mutually interdependent and must be evaluated and planned for jointly. Specific health problems discussed include general health, nutrition, fever and chronic illness, hearing, sight, and mental health. Recommendations were that health conditions be evaluated on a community-wide basis; that family-oriented nutrition surveys be done to evaluate nutritional status of Indian communities; that medical histories of each child be evaluated as each preschool or school-age child is given a complete medical examination; that hearing problems should be detected as early as possible and audiometric examination should be done to detect any loss of particular pitch; that each child's vision be evaluated not only by a Snellen chart test but also by ocular measurements to determine if eye deformity exists; and that mental health programs be planned in a comprehensive fashion, by treating not only the individual but the social environment from which he comes. Abstract

This paper analyses Pickwick’s and Sam Weller’s superficial observation in Charles Dickens’ The Pickwick Papers. Pickwick’s ‘scientific’ attention focuses only on the surface of life. His immature understanding of the world blinds him to life’s understanding reality. The legal professionals’way of accusing Pickwick is the wicked counterpart to Pickwick’s observation. Analysed in a similar manner to his, Pickwick is punished for his superficiality, and learns the proper way of observation through imprisonment in the Fleet. Conversely, Sam’s superficial observation adds another layer to the novel, as he deconstructs the life lessons Pickwick learns from his painful experiences. Sam’s limited “wision” saves the jovial atmosphere of the novel itself from submitting to the grimness of reality.

Abstract

The diagnosis and treatment of early learning problems and their relation to visual development is the subject of a series of 12 articles. The optometric viewpoint expressed is that vision is learned. A child's method of organizing his world, and manifestations of his disorganized behavior, including poor early academic achievement, probably result in learning to see. Vision is viewed as an emergent from four underlying subsystems: (1) anti-gravity (Where am I in space?), (2) centering (Where is it in space?), (3) identification (What is it?), and (4) speech-auditory (communicates his visual impressions). Poor development in any of these subsystems has disruptive effects on the remaining subsystems and on the child's behavior as a whole, particularly on his performance in early education. Proper development, on the other hand, whether achieved normally or through the methods of remedial therapy outlined in the series, leads to integral functioning of the subsystems and ultimately to visualization, which is described as the supreme process of unconsciously using the sensing modes that bring information to the child for synthesis. 29. Roles and Responsibilities When Learners Have CVI: Perspectives from Vision Professionals

Abstract

Introduction: The roles and responsibilities outlined in a white paper by Mazel et al., outline a scope of practice for vision professionals when learners are diagnosed with cerebral visual impairment (CVI). The goal of the current study was to identify teachers' knowledge and skills to apply these roles and responsibilities in practice. Methods: Participants in this study had to be a certified vision teacher or orientation and mobility specialist and have at least one child with CVI on their caseload. Participants (n = 238) were surveyed and asked to rate their skills and knowledge, agreement, and current practice given seven statements that described their roles and responsibilities. Participants were also asked to rank barriers to their practice. Results: The percentage of respondents who strongly agreed with each statement ranged from 78% to 97%. The percentage of respondents who rated their knowledge and skills at a high level across the seven statements ranged from 64% to 88%. Professionals most commonly identified a need for more training and a lack of time in the professional day as barriers to implementing the seven statements of practice. Discussion: Although most vision professionals reported high knowledge and skills in the identified roles and responsibilities, there continues to be a need for more understanding in their role in providing direct services to CVI learners. Implications for Practitioners: The need for more professional development opportunities, specifically in relation to assessment of students with CVI, was identified through the survey. Although vision professionals rated this task as high in their agreement and practice, it was rated as one of the lowest by respondents in terms of their knowledge and skills.
