In this chapter I discuss the value of video and digital microscopy, how an optical signal is converted to an electrical signal using video and digital cameras, and how the signal can be viewed on an analog or digital monitor. I discuss the characteristics of digital CMOS and CCD sensors as well as video tubes in terms of resolution and dynamic range (contrast). This information lets us know how a point in the specimen is converted to a point (pixel) in a video or digital image.
