This thesis provides a new analysis of negotiations between foreign merchants and Venice's board of trade, the Cinque Savii alla Mercanzia, during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. In the last two decades, historians have paid increasing attention to mobility and migration in the early modern Mediterranean, many emphasising the cultural fluidity of individuals traversing imperial boundaries between the Venetian and Ottoman Empires. Scholars have investigated how certain trans-imperial subjects also engaged in processes of cultural mediation and boundary-making in these empires. However, scholars have not yet fully understood the legal and bureaucratic structures in Venice which allowed this movement between empires to occur. This study rectifies this discrepancy by uncovering how foreign merchants manipulated and shaped Venetian legal processes to secure their presence and importance in the city. The research is based on rich and numerous archival sources of regulations, merchants' petitions, letters, and architectural plans from the Venice State Archive and the Museo Correr Library. The thesis pays particular attention to Armenian, Jewish, and Ottoman Turkish merchants, in a broader comparison with German, Greek, Netherlandish, and Safavid Persian merchants. By using a comparative approach, it illustrates patterns and differences in how immigrant communities interacted with Venetian authorities, thus addressing a significant gap in historical scholarship which has so far focussed on individual immigrant groups. Immigrant merchants negotiated with, and were regulated by, the Cinque Savii alla Mercanzia. The Venetian Senate established this body in 1507 to encourage overseas trade, which had been declining in Venice. By 1630 the Cinque Savii alla Mercanzia had become the preeminent body dealing with international trade and regulated all immigrant mercantile communities in Venice. The first part of this thesis establishes how the Cinque Savii alla Mercanzia functioned in Venice's corporate government bureaucracy. The fragmentary nature of Venice's governance meant that fierce jurisdictional rivalries existed between the multitude of regulatory bodies. To survive this competition and prove their worth, the Cinque Savii needed to encourage trade, which required them to appease the interests of immigrant merchants. Chapters two and three examine how immigrants used two key tools of legal negotiation - petitions and representatives - to establish their rights and privileges. During these legal processes, immigrant merchants effectively transformed Venetian legal structures from the inside and shaped Venetian economic policies towards mercantile migrants and foreign trade. The final two chapters then analyse how the Cinque Savii alla Mercanzia navigated conflicting concerns of piety and pragmatism in their regulation of immigrant spaces and the ways in which immigrant merchants were able to circumvent restrictive measures. This thesis argues that Venice exhibited neither a consistent approach of economic tolerance nor religious hostility to foreign merchants. Rather, economic, cultural, civic, and moral concerns were inextricably linked in the regulation of trade and mobility. Furthermore, this study shifts attention onto detailed negotiation; revealing that immigrant merchants themselves applied pressure to transform the policies of the Venetian government. They achieved this by exploiting the paradoxical position of the Cinque Savii alla Mercanzia as both a representative of foreign merchants, and of Venetian authority. A thorough investigation of Venetian government bureaucracy is integral to these findings and this thesis presents the first in-depth analysis of the Cinque Savii alla Mercanzia magistracy in the last century. An understanding of this body, and how political negotiation took place on an everyday, micro-level basis, allows us to form a broader picture of the complex negotiations, political priorities, and personal ambitions which sustained the movement of people, goods, and ideas across the early modern Mediterranean.

The aim of the article is to update the scientific heritage of the well-known Slavist and prominent representative of late Slavophilism Vladimir Ivanovič Lamanskij (1833-1914). Lamanskij’s biography is insufficiently studied in modern research literature. On the basis of archival documents, the article reconstructs Lamanskij’s work in the archives of Venice in 1868 and 1869, which resulted in the publication of an extensive collection of documents and studies on the Venetian Republic’s relations with the Greeks and Slavs during its heyday (16th-early 18th century), called State Secrets of Venice (1884). Lamanskij himself considered State Secrets of Venice his primary academic contribution, and the preface is one of Lamanskij’s main ideological texts. It reflects the Panslavist ideas that were supported in the Russian academic environment in the last third of the 19th century. Archival materials allow us to trace the genesis of Lamanskij’s historiosophic views to better understand how his concept of civilisation, in which the ideas of Slavophiles were developed, was formed. One of the key concept of Lamanskij’s work is the idea of confrontation between the Greco-Slavic and Romano-Germanic cultures in Europe. As a consequence, the study provides a better understanding of the ideology of late Slavophilism in the form of a theory which, in Lamanskij’s works, claims the status of a scientific programme in the humanities and social sciences.

During most of the lifespan of the Venetian republic, doges (the name their presidents received) were elected for life. However, a long tenure was a rare event, which effectively resulted in term limits, as has already been reported by several authors. In this paper, we examine the length of these tenures and their evolution during the existence of the Venetian republic, following Smith et al.’s claim that specific events in Venetian history caused this shortening, but also the dates and possibly event or events that effectively caused that limitation by design. Finally, we will discuss the causes of this limitation and its effective consequences.

EN: This paper is primarily focused on analyzing the share of the soldiers from Kotor in Venetian infantry units in Eastern Adriatic (Fanti oltramarini) in the 18th century. It is a result of years of research of the unpublished documents from the Archivio di Stato di Venezia (the lists made by the recruitment magistracy – Inquisitori sopra l’amministrazione dei pubblici ruoli). Based on these documents – the lists of infantry troops belonging to individual companies and regiments – the following fundamental aspects are analyzed: the method of entering particulars of the Kotor soldiers; their share in infantry and cavalry units; the timeframe of their military service (their mention in the documents); the share of the members of prominent noble families of Kotor among high-ranking officers (the Bolica, Buća, Paskvali and Vraćen families); the duration of their military service; and the dynamics of promotions in their careers. As the documents are very well preserved, the age structure of the Kotor infantrymen and their physical characteristics can also be analyzed. The final section of the paper analyzes the places where the lists of these infantrymen were made (Venice, Veneto, Dalmatia, Bay of Kotor and Greece) and the commanders of their regiments. And finally, the paper concludes that the Kotor soldiers constituted important part of the regional Eastern Adriatic regiments in the final century of the Serenissima. At the very end of the paper, a table including the names of all the hitherto known overseas infantrymen from that period can be found. Rad završava tabelarnim pregledom svih do sada istraženih kotorskih prekomorskih pješaka u navedenome razdoblju.

The paper analyzes the painting by Josip Lalić Kiss of Perast, created around 1930 for the Associazione Nazionale Dalmata in Rome, according to its copy in the Perast Museum in Montenegro. Il bacio di Perasto summarizes the artist’s complex biography, his oeuvre and ideological strongholds, as well as the tradition of Italian history painting of the 19th century. While contemporary Italian literature to a certain extent presents this painting as a symbol of historical, ideological and cultural continuity, in this paper it is interpreted as a pseudo-history construct based on the political agenda of the time in which it was created.

The central purpose of this paper is to analyze the participation of the people from Sinj and from Cetina Border in the Venetian overseas ground forces (infantry and cavalry units) in the 18th century. It analyzes the original source material kept in Archivio di Stato di Venezia – the lists of members of particular military units made by the competent magistracy (Inquisitori sopra l’amministrazione dei pubblici ruoli). The introduction provides general information on the Venetian overseas troops in Eastern Adriatic, while the central part of the paper analyzes the specific examples of the Sinj and Cetina Border soldiers in the Venetian ground forces. The analysis is focused on their overall numbers in the 18th century, the frequency of their mention in the sources, general information on their unit commanders, places of deployment, and some general characteristics of the soldiers of the period (age, stature etc.). The appendix to the paper contains a complete list of the people from Sinj and Cetina Border (based on the research carried out so far) recorded in the Venetian armed forces.

In the 16th century, since the sovereignty of the Venetian Republic over Verona relegated the local aristocracy to merely administrative duties, these same patricians endeavoured to assert their identity - which they claimed to be distinguished by virtue, wealth and power - in a realm secluded from the theatre of politics. That realm was the Accademia Filarmonica, established in 1543. In compliance with the elevated function ascribed to music in the behaviour manuals for the improvement of the gentleman, the Academy stimulated its fellows to engage in singing and playing and, to that end, also provided itself with a rich music library and an extraordinary collection of musical instruments. The Academy also promoted public musical events, recruited skilled musical personnel and protected the composers by accepting the dedications of their works. These forms of sponsorship subjected the musicians to patron-client ties that were connoted by the social gap between masters and servants, the heterogeneity of the services provided by subordinates, the longevity of the relationships, and the extensibility of the obligations and benefits to the relatives of the two parties. In the early modern period, there were some parts of Europe that tensions never ended. As part of the great Ottoman expansion, skirmishes, robbery, and taking slaves occurred almost on a daily basis in Dalmatia from the 15th to 18th centuries. At the beginning, the Venetian defence of the Dalmatian coastal communities was based on small mercenaries' troops and locally recruited men. The establishment of a complex defence system of Military Border i.e. Krajina based on new human power provided by Morlach immigrants was possible only after few great wars in the 18
th century. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

The article focuses on the understudied role of accounting information in financial fraud in pre-modern historical contexts where specific regulations and standards were absent. Following a systematic literature review, the authors adopt an enriched version of the 'fraud triangle' to correctly identify fraud in such a setting. A microhistorical approach allows them to identify an exceptional case documenting the use of accounting statements to disclose a financial fraud in a ceramic manufacturing partnership in late eighteenth-century Venice. The case is analysed to identify the role of accounting information in determining the purpose (incentive), the technical possibility (opportunity) and the consequences (rationalisation) of the fraud. The results emphasise the authorities' use of accounting statements to assess the situation of the company and fix its crisis, rather than to sanction fraudulent behaviours. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper analyses the manuscript map of central and parts of northern Dalmatia by an unknown author in the first decade of the 16th century. It is the oldest preserved detailed depiction of a Croatian region and is currently housed in the State Archives of Venice (Archivio di Stato di Venezia). The analysis of its geographic and toponymic data and the correlation of this data with archival sources show that its qualitative and quantitative content represents a significant advance in the visualisation of spatial reality. It is therefore a valuable cartographic record essential to historical-geographic research of Croatia and the Adriatic as the arena of centuries of military-political confrontation between the Venetian Republic, the Hungaro-Croatian Kingdom (under the Habsburg Dynasty from 1527) and the Ottoman Empire.

The paper analyses late Gothic and early Renaissance imagery on the reliquary casket of Saint Tryphon kept in the Kotor Cathedral. The iconography of the torture and death scenes of the young martyr Tryphon, as well the representation of the architecture on the model of the town of Kotor in the hand of Saint Tryphon opens up the possibility of interpreting this reliquary in a historical context. The paper proposes an interpretation of the iconography of the scenes on the reliquary casket as part of the constructed memory of the Ottoman siege of Kotor under the command of kapudan pacha Hayreddin Barbarossa (1539) and the Venetian defense of the town. A similar way of creating memories through juxtaposing images of Turks, members of the Holy League and Kotor’s devotees under the protection of Saint Tryphon has been recorded in poetry, chronicles, and epistles. The relations between Russia and the papal state in the first years of the Northern war are analyzed. Describes the background to the trip B. I. Kurakin in Rome in 1707, gives a brief overview of the contacts of the Russian state with the States of the Apennine Peninsula at the turn of XVII - XVIII centuries. The personal qualities of the first Russian Ambassador to the court of the Pope are evaluated. Particular attention is paid to the tasks and negotiations held by Kurakin during the execution of his instructions. The description of court ceremonial, diplomatic traditions of Rome is investigated. For a better understanding of the personality, mentality of Kurakin, the article considers the attitude of the Ambassador to the religious holidays of the Catholic state, the everyday life of the population, the ways of spending leisure time by the representatives of the Italian aristocracy. The interest of the Russian diplomat to the historical monuments of Rome, as well as other attractions is noted. The author comes to the conclusion that the trip to the Pope had a contradictory result. Because of the difficult international situation Kurakin failed to achieve support from the Holy see. On the other hand, the information he received enriched domestic diplomacy with valuable experience of relations with a foreign state, and the Russian society with knowledge of traditions and customs of one of the European countries.

The paper deals with gravestone inscriptions of Armenian and Greek merchants from the Dominican church in Split. The Armenian inscriptions, along with a Greek one from 1637 from the tomb for foreigners, are respectively dated to 1624 and 1678. The inscriptions, recorded in the 19th century by Francesco Carrara and Mijat Sabljar, are an interesting testimony to the lively trade that took place via the Lazaretto in Split. They tell of the fates of Christian merchants and their forgotten role in Levantine trade. The names of Philipos, son of Mkrtich, Grigor, son of Karapet, and Giannoulis, a merchant from Pogoniani, have all been brought to light. In the case of Armenian and Greek inscriptions from Split, the phenomena of marginality in art, first systematically dealt with in Croatian art history by Ljubo Karaman, confirm the multiculturalism of Split's heritage and specifically pave the way for the idea of memento mori - an after-life of the Baroque period. The article discusses the little-known (in historiography) history ofdiplomatic relations between Christian Europe and Uzun Hassan (1423–1478), the ruler of Persia. The capital of the country was located in Tabriz, currently in north-western Iran. Uzun Hassan provided military support to Ottoman Turkey’s enemies and sought to establish diplomatic relations with Christian states. The author briefly describes the history of Persia’s diplomatic missions, which were usually aimed at Venice and Rome. In 1472, one of them also visited Krakow, the capital of the Kingdom of Poland. Aside from brief references in contemporary chronicles and diplomatic and diplomatic documents, we know little about details of those first political contacts with Persia. The main part of the article refers to an exceptionally well-documented, in terms of sources, journey of Venetian envoy Ambrogio Contarini to Uzun Hassan’s court in Tabriz. He embarked on the diplomatic mission from Venice in February 1474. As Turks at that time were blocking the crossing from Cyprus to Asia Minor, the Venetian envoy decided to travel by land across Germany, the Kingdom of Poland and Ruthenia. His descriptions of obscure regions at Dnieper, including in Kiev itself, are extremely valuable. He also gave a detailed account of his adventurous journey to Caffa on the shore of the Dead Sea. From there, bypassing the Turkish territory and the mountains of the Caucasus, avoiding many dangers, Contarini made it to Persia.

The Lazaretto, an institution where travelers and goods were accommodated for protection against infectious diseases, played an important role for the Dalmatian cities of Dubrovnik and Split in the Early Modern Period. The primary function of the Lazaretto was health, but the secondary, trading function was equally important. The first chapter of the paper focuses on the background that led to the creation of the Lazaretto, that is the appearance of the plague epidemic, and the characteristics of the Lazaretto in the European context. The next part of the paper focuses on Dubrovnik, which, in order to protect itself from the epidemic and enable further commercial development, was the first to establish quarantine in 1377. It shows the establishment of the Lazaretto, life inside the Lazaretto at Ploče, the services that were responsible for a successful trade and the fight against epidemics, and finally a brief overview of the situation from the fall of the Republic of Dubrovnik to present day. The next part of the paper deals with the description of the Split Lazaretto, which became the main Venetian point for trade with the Ottoman Empire. It describes its establishment, appearance and functioning, important services, and finally the repurposing of the role and the demolition of the Lazaretto. With the establishment of the Lazaretto, Split experienced rapid development, but it also became a major competitor to the Dubrovnik Lazaretto, which led to conflicts between the Venetians and the Ragusans for supremacy over trade, and their relations are the subject of the last part of this paper.

The article is devoted to highlighting the processes of formation, as well as clarifying and comparing the characteristic features of the complex of legal norms that determined crimes and punishments in the communities of the cities of Budva, located on the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea, and Kafa (modern Feodosia) on the northern coast of the Black Sea. In the period under consideration, both cities were under the control of the Italian trading republics (Venice and Genoa), which was reflected in the content of local legal monuments and prompts researchers to compare and compare their legal systems. It is shown that already in the 12th–13th centuries in the coastal cities located on the territory of the Northern Black Sea and the eastern coast of the Adriatic, separate elements of medieval criminal law were gradually formed, which were partly formed on a local basis, and partly brought here from the legal systems of Genoese and Republic of Venice. The Statute of Budva and the Statute of the Genoese colonies on the Black Sea are valuable sources that allow us to get an idea of the main features of the local criminal law of that time. The first of them was developed earlier, but was influenced by Venetian law after 1443, the second (in the last version) was approved by the government of Genoa on February 28, 1449. From the texts of the statutes, it is clear that both in Kafa and Budva, a clear definition of the crime was never developed (and, ultimately, it could not be), but its general understanding covered actions that harmed the state, the urban community, or a specific private person The damage could be physical, moral or material. At the same time, it is worth noting that the legal opinion of the time did not yet draw a clear line between the concepts of "crime" and "offence". In practice, they often coincided. Memoranda of law in a number of cases determined the circumstances aggravating the guilt of the criminal. There was a concept of a multiple crime, that is, the concept of a person committing two or more criminal acts, each of which had the characteristics of an independent crime. Already in those days, the perpetration of not one, but two or more criminal acts by a person was considered evidence of the greater danger of criminal activity and resulted in a more severe punishment. It is noted that the statutes contain references to several categories of criminal acts. Among them are state (against the urban community) and official crimes, crimes against justice, in the economic sphere, criminal acts directed against the person, against property (property crimes), against religion, against the family and morality. The fact that a whole series of crimes, which were undoubtedly committed at that time, were not provided for by the norms included in the statutes, draws attention. It was concluded that over time, criminal law, both in Kafa and Budva, acquires more and more distinct specific features inherent in the local legal system, and becomes noticeably more complex.,

U doba mletačke uprave nad triljskim područjem dolazi do poboljšanja trgovine i poljoprivrede, no uzlet je uvelike usporila pojava kuge, koja je harala Dalmacijom i Hercegovinom u nekoliko navrata, This paper presents the history of the region of Trilj in the period of the early modern age, actually the period from the end of the Middle Ages, the Ottoman era and the period of Venetian rule in these areas. In the first part of the paper, a brief history of the Trilj region is presented, and a detailed description of historical events begins with the reign of the Dražojević princes. . With the fall of Herzegovina to the Turks, the door to the Cetinje region was open, so the important Trillian fortress of Čačvina fell under Ottoman rule as early as 1513, thus beginning the Ottoman administration of this area. In the midst of the VenetianTurkish wars, Christians from Herzegovina and Poljica began to immigrate to the Trilj area, and the period after 1690 until the Little or Sinj War is taken as the key period of migration. During the period of Venetian administration over the Trilj area, trade and agriculture improved, but the rise was greatly slowed down by the appearance of the plague, which ravaged Dalmatia and Herzegovina on several occasion.

Between the 15th and 18th centuries, Zadar was a city under Venetian administration with lively construction activity. Based on historiography and published sources, 195 projects of various purposes whose contractors are known were mapped. Statistically, it has been shown that the 15th and 18th centuries are the most scientifically researched periods and that amplitudes can be seen in architectural activities, the reasons for which are the historical circumstances of the wider region. Changes in the professional nomenclature of architects and builders used in documents were also distinguished; while in the 15th and 16th centuries marangoni (carpenters, builders) predominate, in the 17th and 18th centuries, engineers were the most numerous. An interactive map was also created, which connects the data with the city area.

This paper contributes to the study of the accounting and legal practice existing in the Venetian Republic in the late Middle Ages. The author examines two account books created by the Soranzo fraterna, a trading firm organized as a family partnership and operating in the first half of the 15th century. The larger of the surviving ledgers, known as the libro real novo, is generally considered to be the earliest extant Venetian example of doubleentry bookkeeping. New sources discovered by the author in the State Archives of Venice confirm that the libro real novo represents a compilation of accounts (a so-called estratto) prepared in view of a complicated litigation at the giudici di petizion court. The detailed examination of the judicial conflict in question reveals the purposes behind the composition of this book and the impact that the circumstances of its creation had on the accounting techniques used. 1848 in Venice was one of the most important experiences of the two revolutionary years (1848-1849) in Italy and Europe. However, in the following decades, the narration of the events didn’t valorize its revolutionary character and its democratic heritage. The comparison with the Roman Republic of 1849, which had great importance in the French political debate over the events, was one of the fundamental aspects of these re-readings, which in some cases led to represent the Government of Daniele Manin as the rightful restoration of former Republic of San Marco. If during the third Austrian rule (1849-1866) the last revolutionary experience was represented as the result of a meeting of criminals who had enlisted the Venetian people, during the Liberal era, public use of history was adapted alternately by the dominant forces: the moderates who led the city of Venice, the alliance between conservative clerics and then the “Adriatic nationalism”.

U radu se, tragom oporučnih spisa hrvatskih iseljenika (uključivo i duhovne osobe iz Kotora) razmatra vremenski okvir njihova djelovanja, mjesta stanovanja i djelovanja (župe) te posebice njihova uključenost u nekoć brojnu i društveno važnu hrvatsku zajednicu u Mlecima., The central topic of this article is persons from Kotor (Cattaro) who lived and worked in Venice. The author used all the relevant historiographical literature regarding emigrants from Kotor in Venice, as well as the archival sources – especially notarial testaments of people from Kotor and other Eastern-Adriatic communities, which are kept in the State Archives in Venice. On the basis of the archival sources, the author analyzes the time frame when the spiritual persons from Kotor were noted in the preserved Venetian sources, what titles they had, where did they live and what were their activities in Venice. The author has analyzed in detail the last wills of clergymen from Kotor, as well testaments of other emigrants from Kotor in which priests and monks from Kotor are mentioned. In the end, the author concludes that community of emigrants from Kotor in Venice played an important role regarding the history of Croatians in Venice, and within this history spiritual persons from Kotor had a special place.

The paper discusses the tradition of vendetta and the peace-making process that were a part of a customary legal tradition of rural kinship communities in Montenegro and Albania.
