2. Living on the edge: Plant diversity in the Iberian chionophilous vegetation

Abstract: Aims: Chionophilous vegetation (i.e. snowbed vegetation and chionophilous grasslands) hosts relict arctic-alpine species, among which snowbed specialists, that find their southernmost limit in the Iberian Peninsula, where they are especially threatened by climate change. Our aims were to identify the main Iberian chionophilous vegetation groups, and analyse their plant diversity patterns and their role as refugia for snowbed glacial relicts, as well as that of Iberian high-mountain regions. Location: Iberian high mountains. Methods: We used the beta-flexible clustering method to classify 1002 vegetation relevés of Iberian chionophilous vegetation, and computed species Indicator Values and frequencies for the resulting groups. We performed a Detrended Correspondence Analysis (DCA) ordination of the relevés, and fitted six climatic variables to reveal the main ecological gradients. We constructed rarefaction curves to compare species richness between vegetation groups and between mountain regions. Results: We obtained eight vegetation groups, four consisting of snowbed vegetation and four of chionophilous grasslands. All but one group were present in the Pyrenees, where snowbed specialist richness was the highest. In southern and central Iberian ranges, snowbed vegetation was extremely scarce, and the main vegetation group corresponded to cryoromediterranean grasslands, where both species and specialist richness were the lowest. Snowbed and northern Iberian grassland groups accounted for similar high specialist richness, although specialists were infrequent and scarce at relevé level in these grasslands. Conclusions: Despite the set of specialised species that thrive in snowbeds, many of them are also present but scarce in northern Iberian chionophilous grasslands. In a future scenario with a high reduction of snow cover duration, which may entail the disappearance of many snowbed vegetation patches, northern Iberian chionophilous grasslands may act as terminal refugia for snowbed specialists. Nevertheless, specialists are very threatened in central and southern Iberian ranges, where snowbed vegetation is infrequent and chionophilous grasslands provide almost no shelter to them.

Abstract: © 2021 The Authors., Aims: Understanding fine-grain diversity patterns across large spatial extents is fundamental for macroecological research and biodiversity conservation. Using the GrassPlot database, we provide benchmarks of fine-grain richness values of Palaearctic open habitats for vascular plants, bryophytes, lichens and complete vegetation (i.e., the sum of the former three groups). Location: Palaearctic biogeographic realm. Methods: We used 126,524 plots of eight standard grain sizes from the GrassPlot database: 0.0001, 0.001, 0.01, 0.1, 1, 10, 100 and 1,000 m and calculated the mean richness and standard deviations, as well as maximum, minimum, median, and first and third quartiles for each combination of grain size, taxonomic group, biome, region, vegetation type and phytosociological class. Results: Patterns of plant diversity in vegetation types and biomes differ across grain sizes and taxonomic groups. Overall, secondary (mostly semi-natural) grasslands and natural grasslands are the richest vegetation type. The open-access file ”GrassPlot Diversity Benchmarks” and the web tool “GrassPlot Diversity Explorer” are now available online (https://edgg.org/databases/GrasslandDiversityExplorer) and provide more insights into species richness patterns in the Palaearctic open habitats. Conclusions: The GrassPlot Diversity Benchmarks provide high-quality data on species richness in open habitat types across the Palaearctic. These benchmark data can be used in vegetation ecology, macroecology, biodiversity conservation and data quality checking. Abstract: Aim The EUNIS Habitat Classification is a widely used reference framework for European habitat types (habitats), but it lacks formal definitions of individual habitats that would enable their unequivocal identification. Our goal was to develop a tool for assigning vegetation-plot records to the habitats of the EUNIS system, use it to classify a European vegetation-plot database, and compile statistically-derived characteristic species combinations and distribution maps for these habitats. Location Europe. Methods We developed the classification expert system EUNIS-ESy, which contains definitions of individual EUNIS habitats based on their species composition and geographic location. Each habitat was formally defined as a formula in a computer language combining algebraic and set-theoretic concepts with formal logical operators. We applied this expert system to classify 1,261,373 vegetation plots from the European Vegetation Archive (EVA) and other databases. Then we determined diagnostic, constant and dominant species for each habitat by calculating species-to-habitat fidelity and constancy (occurrence frequency) in the classified data set. Finally, we mapped the plot locations for each habitat. Results Formal definitions were developed for 199 habitats at Level 3 of the EUNIS hierarchy, including 25 coastal, 18 wetland, 55 grassland, 43 shrubland, 46 forest and 12 man-made habitats. The expert system classified 1,125,121 vegetation plots to these habitat groups and 73,188 to other habitats, while 63,064 plots remained unclassified or were classified to more than one habitat. Data on each habitat were summarized in factsheets containing habitat description, distribution map, corresponding syntaxa and characteristic species combination. Conclusions EUNIS habitats were characterized for the first time in terms of their species composition and distribution, based on a classification of a European database of vegetation plots using the newly developed electronic expert system EUNIS-ESy. The data provided and the expert system have considerable potential for future use in European nature conservation planning, monitoring and assessment. 7. Hydrological heterogeneity rather than water chemistry explains the high plant diversity and uniqueness of a Pyrenean mixed mire

Abstract: Este artículo contiene 18 páginas, 4 figuras, 4 tablas, 3 apéndices., In the Alpine mountains, mire systems are found in the form of small, scattered landscape units. Nevertheless, they maintain noticeably high diversity in terms of plant specialists and community types. A unique, species-rich example in the central Pyrenees, Bassa Nera, is analysed here by describing the major gradients that drive species composition and their relationship with abiotic drivers. We studied the specific vegetation composition, water chemistry and seasonal dynamics of the water table at 35 sampling points. The floristic data confirmed the uniqueness of Bassa Nera in relation to similar Pyrenean mire systems, both in terms of total species richness and regionally rare mire specialists. We distinguished seven plant community types and identified the depth to the water table as the principal driver of the variation in species composition. The water chemistry determined smaller composition shifts, since variations in pH and cationic contents were moderate. Flooded areas were species poor whereas soligenous sub-alkaline fens supported the highest numbers of species. However, the harshest mire habitats (floating Sphagnum carpets and Sphagnum hummocks) stood out as they included the highest number of rare plants within relatively species-poor assemblages. Therefore, the high species richness and uniqueness of the Bassa Nera system mirrors a combination of a wide range of hydrological conditions and a moderate variation in water chemistry. This case study reveals how a few mire systems stand out as exceptional sites. Abstract: Aim Biodiversity databases are valuable resources for understanding plant species distributions and dynamics, but they may insufficiently represent the actual geographic distribution and climatic niches of species. Here we propose and test a method to assess sampling coverage of species distribution in biodiversity databases in geographic and climatic space. Location Europe. Methods Using a test selection of 808,794 vegetation plots from the European Vegetation Archive (EVA), we assessed the sampling coverage of 564 European vascular plant species across both their geographic ranges and realized climatic niches. Range maps from the Chorological Database Halle (CDH) were used as background reference data to capture species geographic ranges and to derive species climatic niches. To quantify sampling coverage, we developed a box-counting method, the Dynamic Match Coefficient (DMC), which quantifies how much a set of occurrences of a given species matches with its geographic range or climatic niche. DMC is the area under the curve measuring the match between occurrence data and background reference (geographic range or climatic niche) across grids with variable resolution. High DMC values indicate good sampling coverage. We applied null models to compare observed DMC values with expectations from random distributions across species ranges and niches. Results Comparisons with null models showed that, for most species, actual distributions within EVA are deviating from null model expectations and are more clumped than expected in both geographic and climatic space. Despite high interspecific variation, we found a positive relationship in DMC values between geographic and climatic space, but sampling coverage was in general more random across geographic space. Conclusion Because DMC values are species-specific and most biodiversity databases are clearly biased in terms of sampling coverage of species occurrences, we recommend using DMC values as covariates in macroecological models that use species as the observation unit. Abstract: International audience; Plant functional traits directly affect ecosystem functions. At the species level, trait combinations depend on trade-offs representing different ecological strategies, but at the community level trait combinations are expected to be decoupled from these trade-offs because different strategies can facilitate co-existence within communities. A key question is to what extent community-level trait composition is globally filtered and how well it is related to global versus local environmental drivers. Here, we perform a global, plot-level analysis of trait-environment relationships, using a database with more than 1.1 million vegetation plots and 26,632 plant species with trait information. Although we found a strong filtering of 17 functional traits, similar climate and soil conditions support communities differing greatly in mean trait values. The two main community trait axes that capture half of the global trait variation (plant stature and resource acquisitiveness) reflect the trade-offs at the species level but are weakly associated with climate and soil conditions at the global scale. Similarly, within-plot trait variation does not vary systematically with macro-environment. Our results indicate that, at fine spatial grain, macro-environmental drivers are much less important for functional trait composition than has been assumed from floristic analyses restricted to co-occurrence in large grid cells. Instead, trait combinations seem to be predominantly filtered by local-scale factors such as disturbance, fine-scale soil conditions, niche partitioning and biotic interactions.

It has been in development since 2012 and first made available for use in research projects in 2014. It stores copies of national and regional vegetation-plot databases on a single software platform. Data storage in EVA does not affect on-going independent development of the contributing databases, which remain the property of the data contributors. EVA uses a prototype of the database management software TURBOVEG 3 developed for joint management of multiple databases that use different species lists. This is facilitated by the SynBioSys Taxon Database, a system of taxon names and concepts used in the individual European databases and their corresponding names on a unified list of European flora. TURBOVEG 3 also includes procedures for handling data requests, selections and provisions according to the approved EVA Data Property and Governance Rules. By 30 June 2015, 61 databases from all European regions have joined EVA, contributing in total 1 027 376 vegetation plots, 82% of them with geographic coordinates, from 57 countries. EVA provides a unique data source for large-scale analyses of European vegetation diversity both for fundamental research and nature conservation applications. Abstract: AimsPhytosociological classification of fen vegetation (Scheuchzerio palustris-Caricetea fuscae class) differs among European countries. Here we propose a unified vegetation classification of European fens at the alliance level, provide unequivocal assignment rules for individual vegetation plots, identify diagnostic species of fen alliances, and map their distribution.LocationEurope, western Siberia and SE Greenland.Methods29 049 vegetation-plot records of fens were selected from databases using a list of specialist fen species. Formal definitions of alliances were created using the presence, absence and abundance of Cocktail-based species groups and indicator species. DCA visualized the similarities among the alliances in an ordination space. The ISOPAM classification algorithm was applied to regional subsets with homogeneous plot size to check whether the classification based on formal definitions matches the results of unsupervised classifications.ResultsThe following alliances were defined: Caricion viridulo-trinervis (sub-halophytic Atlantic dune-slack fens), Caricion davallianae (temperate calcareous fens), Caricion atrofusco-saxatilis (arcto-alpine calcareous fens), Stygio-Caricion limosae (boreal topogenic brown-moss fens), Sphagno warnstorfii-Tomentypnion nitentis (Sphagnum-brown-moss rich fens), Saxifrago-Tomentypnion (continental to boreo-continental nitrogen-limited brown-moss rich fens), Narthecion scardici (alpine fens with Balkan endemics), Caricion stantis (arctic brown-moss rich fens), Anagallido tenellae-Juncion bulbosi (Ibero-Atlantic moderately rich fens), Drepanocladion exannulati (arcto-boreal-alpine non-calcareous fens), Caricion fuscae (temperate moderately rich fens), Sphagno-Caricion canescentis (poor fens) and Scheuchzerion palustris (dystrophic hollows). The main variation in the species composition of European fens reflected site chemistry (pH, mineral richness) and sorted the plots from calcareous and extremely rich fens, through rich and moderately rich fens, to poor fens and dystrophic hollows. ISOPAM classified regional subsets according to this gradient, supporting the ecological meaningfulness of this classification concept on both the regional and continental scale. Geographic/macroclimatic variation was reflected in the second most important gradient.ConclusionThe pan-European classification of fen vegetation was proposed and supported by the data for the first time. Formal definitions developed here allow consistent and unequivocal assignment of individual vegetation plots to fen alliances at the continental scale.

12. Diversity of Rich Fen Vegetation and Related Plant Specialists in Mountain Refugia of the Iberian Peninsula

Abstract: In temperate mountains, fens have been reported as relict habitats subject to geographical fragmentation and broad climatic gradients, but few studies have analyzed the influence of these factors on plant diversity. Here we investigate the effect of isolation on the vegetation diversity of rich fens (Caricion davallianae) in the mountains of the Iberian Peninsula, the distribution limit of these habitats in south-western Europe. We used plot-based vegetation data from the Pyrenees and the Cantabrian mountain range to evaluate their regional species-pool, occurrence of specialists, beta-diversity and the effect of geo-climatic variables on their species-richness and species-composition. We found a lower ratio of rare specialists in the Pyrenees than in the Cantabrian range, but similar estimates in the species pools, total species-richness per plot and beta-diversity. The isolation of the two mountain regions resulted in different species assemblages best predicted by summer precipitation and bedrock types, showing region-based differences in the response of vegetation and plant specialists to the environment. The tighter correlation between local climate and diversity estimates in the Cantabrian range suggests relict character of rich fens in that region, where climatic conditions have restricted local distribution of formerly more widely distributed specialists. Although there is no relevant evidence of vegetation impoverishment in that region, historical isolation has probably resulted in the existence of fragmentary plant communities. We conclude that fen vegetation may experience long-time persistence in climatically sub-optimal mountain refugia, but related plant specialists may be sensitive to climatic changes and subject to the extinction of local populations.

Abstract: [cat] Aquesta tesi tracta de la diversitat de la vegetació de les molleres i les torberes d’esfagnes, i de la seva distribució i arranjament al llarg de gradients ambientals a diferents escales. El marc geogràfic en el que es desenvolupa la nostra recerca és la península Ibèrica i els Pirineus francesos, i la Terra del Foc (Argentina). La vegetació de les molleres i de les torberes d’esfagnes és singular en tant que presenta múltiples espècies característiques, i és diversificada pel gran nombre de comunitats vegetals que s’hi han descrit. Especialment a les muntanyes alpines del sud d’Europa, aquests aiguamolls són sistemes fràgils i objectius prioritaris de conservació, ja que unit a la seva raresa natural, es veuen afectats per les activitats humanes. Els fonaments sobre l’organització i funcionament d’aquesta vegetació es basa en estudis realitzats en sistemes boreals i temperats freds. En canvi, a les muntanyes del sud d’Europa, el coneixement és insuficient. Aquí, a diferència de les extenses torberes boreals, aquests tipus de vegetació s’organitzen de forma complexa en mosaics intricats que ocupen petites superfícies en indrets topogràficament favorables. Per la seva banda, la Terra del Foc, conté extenses torberes insuficientment investigades. Per contribuir al coneixement d’aquests aiguamolls, vam mostrejar intensivament nombroses àrees pirinenques i la Terra del Foc, i vam analitzar la informació recollida en milers d’inventaris de vegetació per nombrosos autors al llarg dels segles XXè i XXIè. Vam posar l’èmfasi a mesurar les variacions de la posició de la capa freàtica i en recollir informació detallada dels briòfits, aspectes negligits en molts estudis previs. A partir de l’estudi detallat de vuit sistemes de molleres i de torberes d’esfagnes, cinc als Pirineus i tres a la Terra del Foc, vam relacionar les principals variables ambientals físico-químiques amb la variació florística. D’una banda, tant als Pirineus com a la Terra del Foc, la posició de la capa freàtica va ser la variable més important per explicar els patrons en vegetació a escala de detall. D’altra banda, en analitzar per separat l’arranjament dels briòfits, aquests van respondre més a la química de l’aigua (pH) que no pas a la posició de la capa freàtica. A més a més, vam poder explicar la singularitat florística a partir de la singularitat ecològica. Així, les rareses botàniques es van concentrar en sistemes humits que contenien hàbitats singulars, com les catifes d’esfagnes tremoloses i els bonys d’esfagnes. D’altra banda, a escala regional, la principal variació florística a la Terra del Foc va ser causada pel gradient latitudinal, molt correlacionat amb la variació de les variables climàtiques. Igualment, als Pirineus, l’estructura espacial va ser el principal rector de l’organització de la diversitat florística a les molleres i a les torberes d’esfagnes. D’aquesta manera, a escala regional, el conjunt d’espècies locals va resultar un element clau. Fruit de l’estudi d’uns 6.500 inventaris de vegetació de la península Ibèrica i dels Pirineus, vam obtenir que tota la vegetació higròfila de muntanya forma un sol i singular conjunt florístic, mostrant la importància de la humitat edàfica en l’organització de la flora i la vegetació de muntanya. A escala regional, els principals gradients ambientals que van regir l’arranjament de comunitats vegetals higròfiles són la fertilitat i el pH. La influència oceànica també va ser molt important i es va manifestar a escales de desenes o centenars de quilòmetres. Finalment, fruit de l’estudi detallat de les molleres de la Vall d’Aran, vam reconèixer-hi vint-i-dues associacions vegetals i en vam descriure dues de noves (Calliergo gigantei-Narthecietum ossifragi i Straminergo straminei-Caricetum curtae), [eng] This book focuses on mire ecology and biogeography. We studied the distribution and arrangement of plant assemblages along environmental gradients at different scales. We developed our research in the Iberian mountains and the Pyrenees, and in Tierra del Fuego (Argentina). Peatland and mire ecology has traditionally focused on boreal and cold temperate climatic zones in the Northern Hemisphere, and therefore we have very limited knowledge on the ecology and biogeography of mires in the alpine ranges of Central and Southern Europe. Similarly, the fens of Tierra del Fuego are poorly studied. In order to contribute to a better understanding of these wetlands, we sampled 15 mire systems in the Pyrenean range and 3 in Tierra del Fuego. Also, we analyzed thousands of floristic relevés of hygrophilous vegetation stored at the SIVIM database. We put a particular emphasis on both the measurement of the fluctuation of the depth to the water table and the gathering of the most detailed bryophyte information, because they were neglected in the previous published research. On the whole, at fine scale the most correlated variable to the variation of plant communities was the depth to the water table. However, the bryophyte assemblages were more sensitive to changes in the soil pH than to the water regime. Moreover, the concentration of botanical rarities on a few singular mire systems in the Pyrenees could be explained by the ecological diversification of habitats, driven mainly by the elongation of the water table gradient. At regional scale, on the one hand, bioclimatic variables, spatial structure of the vegetation and the local species pools have most likely played a major role on the diversification of the mire flora and vegetation. Further, fertility and pH gradients were the most influential among the soil and groundwater factors. Finally, we reported 22 plant associations from Vall d’Aran, two of which are newly described (Calliergo gigantei-Narthecietum ossifragi i Straminergo straminei-Caricetum curtae).

Abstract: A lack of paleobotanic studies with adequate resolution and multiproxy approaches has limited proper discussion of vegetation dynamics in Cantabria and of the role of fires in the configuration of the plant landscape during the Holocene in the northwest part of the Iberian peninsula. The pollen diagram of La Molina peat bog in Puente Viesgo (43°15′38″ N–3°58′37″ W; ETRS89), located at 484 m.a.s.l., and the study of its sedimentary charcoals allowed the acquisition of a continuous and thorough fire sequence for the last 6700 cal yr BP and an understanding of its relationship to the forest. The results show the importance of human influence on the incidence and characteristics of fire activity during the different phases studied: the Neolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Roman period, and Middle Ages. A synergy seems to exist between dry climate periods (especially during Bond events 3 and 4) and a greater presence of biomass. As the Holocene advances, vegetation coverage clearly tends to decrease. This study provides key elements for understanding the role of fire activity in the forest dynamics of deciduous and evergreen Quercus , Corylus , Pinus , Fagus , and Alnus and demonstrates the strongly artificialized character of the present landscape.

15. Floristic patterns and plant traits of Mediterranean communities in fragmented habitats

Abstract: Aim To contrast floristic spatial patterns and the importance of habitat fragmentation in two plant communities (grassland and scrubland) in the context of ecological succession. We ask whether plant assemblages are affected by habitat fragmentation and, if so, at what spatial scale? Does the relative importance of the niche differentiation and dispersal-limitation mechanisms change throughout secondary succession? Is the dispersal-limitation mechanism related to plant functional traits? Location A Mediterranean region, the massif of Albera (Spain). Methods Using a SPOT satellite image to describe the landscape, we tested the effect of habitat fragmentation on species composition, determining the spatial scale of the assemblage response. We then assessed the relative importance of dispersal-related factors (habitat fragmentation and geographical distance) and environmental constraints (climate-related variables) influencing species similarity. We tested the association between dispersal-related factors and plant traits (dispersal mode and life form). Results In both community types, plant composition was partially affected by the surrounding vegetation. In scrublands, animal-dispersed and woody plants were abundant in landscapes dominated by closed forests, whereas winddispersed annual herbs were poorly represented in those landscapes. Scrubby assemblages were more dependent on geographical distance, habitat fragmentation and climate conditions (temperature, rainfall and solar radiation); grasslands were described only by habitat fragmentation and rainfall. Plant traits did not explain variation in spatial structuring of assemblages. Main conclusions Plant establishment in early Mediterranean communities may be driven primarily by migration from neighbouring established communities, whereas the importance of habitat specialization and community drift increases over time. Plant life forms and dispersal modes did not explain the spatial variation of species distribution, but species richness within the community with differing plant traits was affected by habitat patchiness.

Cada fitxa presenta, de manera molt sintètica, les característiques més rellevants de l'hàbitat (aspecte, ecologia general, component biòtic, paràmetres d'interès de conservació...) i porta algunes figures il·lustratives i, en la majoria de casos, un petit mapa de distribució.
